Pre booked a table for 5 on a Saturday lunchtime in York (we were recommended by a friend). The welcome from the man at the bar was really personal and the lady that served our food was great too. We all ordered food, it all arrived together piping hot and was very tasty-excellent value for money-5 empty plates. The place was really busy and had a great atmosphere. I might suggest more staff as the ones there, were really busy all the time (but they still managed to provide great customer service). We would definitely go back and recommend to others

7 minutes ago New You cannot come to York without visiting this pub. Cosy atmosphere, expansive drink selection, great home cooked food, and friendly staff. Maddie, Lucy, and George looked after us this evening and were very welcoming; although they were busy, they made sure that every person was dealt with and did it with a smile. Make sure if you’re visiting York, spooky reasons or not, that you add the Punchbowl to your places to go to

Although the staff were nice, the food was very underwhelming. The quality was poor for the high price, as the food was served lukewarm and with items missing. The selection of beers was limited and there was drink menu items unavailable, which the bartender wasn’t aware of. The atmosphere was nice for a drink, but I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant.

2 adults, 11yr old, 9yr old and 2 Yr old. Lovely old fashioned pub. Comfortable seating and high chairs and free WiFi. The pies are 10/10. Kids only had fries or chunky chips due to lack of kids menu (they literally just need to add some chicken nuggets and they've nailed it). They have lots of local ales and you can get 1/3 ale flights to experience more

I have Been frequenting the punch bowl for many years, we decided to stop for some lunch on Saturday with our grandson, my grandson wanted sausage and mash they didn’t have it on the children’s menu, so I paid the main menu price. When the meal arrived it had the gravy Already on the meal, my grandson became upset as he didn't want gravy on his mash just sausage, I asked the waitress if she could take it away and have some mash without the gravy on as we assumed the gravy would be in a boat or jug. We pacified our grand son, when a female member of staff informed me that I would have to order some thing else off the children’s menu and would have to pay extra, I informed the lady that I had just spent over £50 and we only wanted the gravy removing off the mash. Shock and gobsmacked at her attitude We left and will not be back. I think Nicklesons needs to look at training staff in good customer service.

Went to York for the day and once arrived around midday we sourced a pub. Came to the Punch Bowl, in the city centre and went in. Very olde worlde lots of little rooms and dark wood, superb atmosphere and good selection of local beers and gins. Didn't try the food but it was being served to other guests and looked delicious.

Now this is just my opinion: The pouring of the pints and the temperature of the beer was not the best - ale was kept way too cold, so what head there was disappeared very quickly. The famous pies were famously lacking in filling. Atmosphere wasn't bad - made better by the one waitress/hostess who didn't lack the banter or a smile

Really old type pub inside with wooden panelling and floors. Usual tap beers and a few real ales. Camra discount on showing your card. Divided into small rooms. Lights are very dull which adds to the atmosphere. Staff were friendly and polite. Beer was good. I love this place. I had looked for it specifically, I was there last year and the food was great. This year was the same - the food is AMAZING. The fishcakes are the best I have ever had. And for £11 - an absolute bargain! Others on our table had fish pie and a burger. Service was excellent. The ONLY thing that lets this place down is the toilets. I can't comment on the fellas, but the ladies was pretty grim. It looked like one of the toilets had just developed a leak, another was smeared in the brown stuff.... if I had seen the toilets before ordering food, I probably wouldn't have bothered to be honest! Hopefully they take this only criticism on board and do something about it. A few other pubs were similarly let down... great food but shocking toilets. It is a busy little pub, but please, check in the toilets a bit more regularly! It was very busy, lunchtime Saturday, no excuse though. Otherwise I would have gladly given a 5 star review.

Dire food and beer! My beer was plainly off but they said it was just “settling”. I took a couple of gulps and took it back. No apology. The food was equally as bad. My ham and mature cheddar toastie consisted of what looked like supermarket ham and a Kraft cheese slice! The Blt my partner had was left half eaten and ranked poor. Never again!

Having heard a lot about this place, we went to try it out, and it was still pretty packed despite being a Monday afternoon! Rooted in the history of York and infamous for being haunted, the pub in itself was cosy, aesthetic and warm. We had the Lamb Shepherds Pie which was the best I’ve had, Chicken Schnitzel, which was a bit oily for my liking, and Apply and Bramble Crumble which was great with custard, though a bit too tart. Overall we really liked pure experience and would come back. The service was prompt and both all the servers were really kind :)

Fabulous medieval bar , restaurant. Staff really accommodating and friendly. We ended up staying most of our afternoon in the snug which has to be visited to be appreciated. It’s full of history and atmosphere we never wanted to leave. We ordered food which was from a reduced menu as the grill was out of action, so we decided to go for the pie selection. We can recommend the steak and ale pie which came with perfectly roasted carrots chips or mash and a gravy boat. Also the puy lentil shepherds pie with again perfect carrots and broccoli, boat of vegetable gravy. If visiting York the shambles shopping street is a must , this is where you will find The Punch Bowl , good look getting any further. Might see us we intend going back as soon as we get chance . Really enjoyed the experience.

We went just before lunch and the food was good. My dear old ma said that the beef brisket burger was AMAZING (she didn't have the bun because she's coeliac and the kitchen was good in taking that into consideration). I had the Pork and chorizo pie and it was divine! Hotter than I gave it credit for! but the gravy and mash were great; almost creamed potato rather than mashed! Casey saw my mum was getting on in years and, because the bar was quiet, actually delivered her second coffee to the table. What a sweetheart I know the other staff might be just as good but Casey took note of my mum's gluten problems and was very attentive; I hope you get her serving you; the best!

Great looking pub this. Staff are very friendly, We didn’t eat so can’t comment on the food. The beer and wine selection was great. Unfortunately the TV was on showing the news. The music leaves a lot to be desired too. We left when ‘Boyzone’ came on shortly after Britney Spears! The average age of the people in the bar at the time must have been 50+ Not much thought has gone into keeping punters entertained in my opinion. Maybe Turn the tele off (people can watch the depressing news at home) and play music to your audiences age perhaps? I accept you can’t please everyone but your TV/Music made us leave. Update: Thanks for your reply. It matters that you make the effort.

Noticed this pub was completely empty as we were passing so thought we'd help boost their sales. We soon realised why it's empty. They were unwelcoming and awkward about my friend's assistance dog and said the dog wasn't allowed. We had to explain what an assistance dog was and my friend is registered disabled (not a great , welcoming start). The barmaid put her glasses on and leaned over the bar to inspect his harness before we were allowed to order a drink..... I asked what white wine they had and they only had one. I asked if I could try a tiny taste to make sure I liked it - no that's not allowed either. We promptly left before any more rules could be forced upon us and headed down the road where our custom was more welcome.
