Shockingly no Covid compliance at all. No masks, no signs, staff on phones uninterested and locals dogs running a riot jumping up customers not to mention scaring our little boy when literally ankle biting! Couldn’t wait to leave. Landlord in and out dropping off delivery brushing past chair, interacting with customers with no mask. No sign of track and trace at all. Matter of time before Covid rates increase in Combe Martin with this attitude.

The Pub may be 400 years old but it's been developed and knocked about by builders and occupiers over the years. There is no obvious sign any more of its history, nor that Ye Olde George and Dragon used to be pretty great, once. It had a lovely restaurant and kitchen, but when we popped in during January 2020: a man just said they didn't do food. Bizarre.

We recently visited Combe Martin and upon recommendation we visited the George and Dragon. We were not disappointed. The food was well presented and served by friendly staff. Our party ordered the Homity Pie, Sea Bass and Roast Pork. All meals were superb and we would definitely recommend this place again. It is a small family run business and the Chef (Amy or Emma not 100% sure of her name!) cooks everything from scratch which is quite a rare thing in these days of frozen chips from a bag!

We went for Sunday lunch hoping to enjoy a good meal how wrong we were. The food was of very poor standard and quantity. My sister and I ordered the Hommity Pie which consists of pastry, potatoes, leeks and a cheese sauce and a side dish of vegetables. The pastry was not cooked, potatoes were hard as were the vegetables, we not able to eat the meal. We complained about our meals as did others in our party, we did not even get an apology and the lady who completed the meals would not even speak to my sister or myself or even make eye contact with us. Liar. The fresh was 10mm thick and what was served was only 2mm thick, hunt the fish between the batter. No apology for the retuned under cooked pies or lying to me about serving frozen fish as fresh. The attire left a lot to be desired as it was stained and grubby.Asking for a discount met with a difensive attitude so none given. Please try elsewhere.

We passed through Combe Martin whilst walking the coast path, and stopped for dinner at this restaurant. It is a lovely space , with areas for free pool and darts, a bar area, and then the restaurant which opens out into the garden. The bar serves good draft beer. There was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at the bar from both staff and locals. There is table service in the restaurant, with polite attentive staff. We ate sea bass for main and crème brulé for dessert, both very nice quality and freshly cooked. We were very happy with our experience here.

We called in while on holiday in Combe Martin. I wasnt sure whether we should try it as most of the reviews were quite old and i think ownership had changed hands. The interior of the Bar/Restaurant was very pleasing and spacious. We ordered Potatoe skins for starters and when thet arrived they looked nice but unfortunately cold .we sent them back but when we received them they were still cool. For main courses I had sausage and mash and my wife sirloin steak. The sausage and mash looked nice with onion gravy and topped with bacon, it came in a bowl which made the food look cramped and a bigger dish would have been better. The sausages were cooked well but were more like the cheap sausages we had when i was a kid, i wish restaurants would spend more on their products. My wife really enjoyed her steak. The service was good and the young man who served us was very pleasant. I probably wouldnt go back.

I had a special of chicken and bacon topped with dauphonoise potatoes and cheese with sweet potatoto mash and my husband had sausages and mash with onion gravy topped with bacon, to follow was a smashing creme brulee and homemade mocha cake both equally delicious. The service was excellent. The restaurant and pub is light and modern with a great selection of beers and wines. On leaving we noticed a lunch menu that has proper sandwiches and ploughmans lunches, what a bonus, will definitely be back.

After passing the pub on a Monday lunchtime it looked like a lovely place to eat at. Unfortunately it was shut but we decided to give it a try later in the week. We went at about 6.30 on a Thursday evening. As soon as we walked in we were met by a small child sitting at the bar who immediately shouted at us asking if we were eating? After replying that we were we were shown into a brightly lit restaurant which was as empty as the bar areas and atmosphereless. There was another child in this room who again was shouting. My wife did not want to eat in an empty room so we went to an area adjacent to the bar. This room was completely the opposite to the restaurant in that it was very dark. There were not that many good places to sit and there was a scooter and helmet at different tables. Whilst perusing the menu very loud rock music was blaring out of another room and the children continued to be very vocal. My wife could not think so didn't even try the menu. I could not see any restaurant standard food on the menu with it appearing to be mostly pub grub. It was not a hard decision to not eat here but instead go to the more grown up Pack of Cards down the road. Whilst there a couple more people came in then left soon after, probably due to it being more like a youth club. This was not a good experience which we thought was a real shame. At £3.50 a pint, the cider was good value though.

This place could be fantastic with another talented chef and a Fine Dining menu. Fair is fair, must recommend Ye Olde George and Dragon Combe Martin. Would rate this as Fine Dining and fail to comprehend why it wasn't busy. Took the family on holiday but we noted that lone diners are welcomed too. Not busy for a Sunday but that means nothing at all. Beautifully furnished restaurant. Immediately greeted by an efficient young lady and shown to a table. The carvery was very, very good, meat covered, all food hot. Very tasty and plentiful. Chef (we assume) was most charming and she even checked we were all okay. We visited the George and Dragon on the recommendation of a taxi driver and we owe him a big thank you. Four of us went there last Saturday evening. We received a very warm welcome from the landlady, who is also the chef, and from the lady behind the bar. We made our choices from the superb menu. It was particularly nice for myself to have several vegetarian choices on both the starter and mains, All the food is cooked to order and tastes so wonderfully fresh. Two of us had the onion soup to start and we both agreed it was sensational, the very best onion soup we'd ever had. My friend had a very retro prawn cocktail and my husband had the whitebait. Both of these dishes were pronounced amazing. For main course our two friends had a chicken dish (sorry I can't remember what it was called), my husband had chicken cacciatore and I had the vegetarian cacciatore. All the food arrived at the table piping hot and beautifully presented. The depth of flavour was out of this world. We had two bottles of extremely good Sauvignon Blanc, served nice and chilled, The portions were very generous. The restaurant at the back of the pub overlooks the countryside so it is a lovely place to have a meal. The bill was very reasonable and I would recommend anyone staying in Coombe Martin to have a meal here; it was easily the best meal we had during our stay. The locals are lucky to have such a wonderful restaurant on their doorstep.

We visited Saturday 27th May, bank holiday weekend with my inlaws. We had such an amazing carvery when we visited last August bank holiday that we decided to re visit again this time whilst staying in Combe Martin. We pre booked the table the evening before as thought it would be busy on a Saturday night. Alarm bells should have set in when they said it was quiet! When we arrived we realised it wasn't the same owners, but it looked the same and sure thought it would be ok, it was quiet with only one table occupied (around 8 people). We were greeted by a nice lady ordered a drink and showed to our table, we ordered our food (great menu, very varied) and enjoyed a drink, whilst a couple then came in and a party of 12 or so with a newborn baby around 30 min later. After an hour or so we saw the couple had been given their meal but up and left quickly after only eating couple mouthfuls, a young waitress then asked "have u ordered"? We replied yes over an hour a go" this is not acceptable as it was quiet, we were told it was in its way! Ten more minutes passed and the party next to us decided they were not waiting for an hour for their food and left, we too decided to do the same. So disappointed :( We all upand left and went over the road to the chippy, not quite what I was expecting on a weekend away with my inlaws. We will not be re visiting and they need to up there game before the summer season because clearly they can't cope now.

Prime time on a Saturday night and the restaurant was totally empty. A young child enquired if we were there to eat as if it was an event. Our group knew immediately that things were not quite right and we should have left then and there. However we were out for a meal and our options were limited as The Pack of Cards just down the road was fully booked. We skipped any thoughts of a starter and just ordered a main course. It took ages to come and when it arrived it was hopelessly overcooked. The tuna steak was very dry and the strips of steak were extremely tough and almost inedible. Even the potatoes were a disaster. We drowned our sorrows in a couple of bottles of wine. We will never go back.

After spending the day down the beach and having 3 children desperately wanting a hot dinner, we were looking for a place that were still serving a carvery at 5pm on a Sunday, we searched on trip advisor and found this place. We called ahead of time to be told by Tanya (owner) that we were welcome. We arrived to a table set up for us, all ready with a highchair in place for my granddaughter.Well I must say that we've never felt more welcome in any establishment as we did here. Our young children, 12 (mental age of 5), 9 and 1, were free to be themselves and weren't expected to just sit quietly, Tanya interacted with them all, as well as us. And on top of this, made sure we had a good fill of delicious carvery food! The barmaid (sorry didn't catch your name) was extremely attentive too. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the fact they are 4 hours drive from where we live, which means this place can't be my local! However, after having a lovely long weekend in Devon, we can't wait to return, and we will 100% be returning to Ye Olde George and Dragon.Well done guys on not only the delicious food...but for being such awesome people. This establishment has been known locally as "The Bottom George" for as long as I can remember. Last time we went, in late 2015 I think, it served the finest Sunday lunches in Ilfracombe or Barnstaple, with a professional catering team and good food. People raved about it & its only local rival, the Pack O' Cards, had some real competition. The Old George has since changed hands, so maybe time for a review from an old experienced hand. First, do they have a professional chef, hungry to make their name? Not obviously. We had a very generous Sunday lunch which was just okay; cost: around a tenner plus drinks. The food could (must) be kept hotter, served hot and replenished regularly. These are basics that a Commis or a waitress would know.Hobbying is now the norm, in North Devon's DIY amateur kitchens and Cafes and the region's food is poorer for it. Prices are rising; VFM and service standards continue to fall. Get it right professionally, serve great food, and the business will thrive. They made a few changes at "The George"but it's still the same layout. This is still a great looking pub, well appointed and well decorated. We should give newcomers a chance and see how they develop, they might prove us wrong.

I was a bit disconcerted to hear that someone was complaining about the steak they had been served and, the waiting time. My steak was served to me within fifteen minutes, was cooked beautifully and, had obviously been rested properly because it was very tender. As I have been a chef for over eighteen years I believe that I do know what I'm on about, and as for the complaining man it was interesting to see that he had managed to clear his plate before he complained! We had reserved our table of eight some days before arriving in Combe Martin, glad we did as this restaurant is very popular with diners, the reputation for an excellent carvery is well justified. There were four meats on offer, the portions were large and the meat cooked to perfection. Equally, the large array of vegetables cooked perfectly. Unusually, chipolatas, stuffing balls were all included in the help yourself side of the carvery. The staff, from the genial lady carving the meats, barman (landlord?), to the waiting staff - all very friendly that helped make an enjoyable Sunday lunchtime meal. Three of the ladies in our party managed to find room for a dessert, all were impressed. The only slight disappointment on my part was the extremely limited choice of a decent ale, I'm afraid Doombar just doesn't do it for me, along with Worthington, oh dear! Guinness saved the day for me. That slight irritation for me cannot detract from an excellent carvery - do not hesitate to make a reservation if you are in the area.

Everything cooked fresh, staff welcoming and the landlord even lent us his darts - just a shame I wasn't good enough to win a game .

In Combe Martin for a weekend break, and after a Sunday morning walk a Carvery is just what we needed. The seating in the restaurant was full so the staff member suggested we sit anywhere else we pleased and brought cutlery to us very quickly. The food was of excellent quality and quantity and was enjoyed by all three of us. Very good value. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. A place to visit again when we are in the area.

The Sunday carvery had so much choice. Several types of meat, heaps of lovely veg, different potatoes, and even different stuffings!!We dropped in on a whim and the restaurant was fully booked but we were quickly told that we were more than welcome to sit on a table in the bar area to eat. Very quick service and lovely staff from the nice man behind the bar, the carvery staff and the lady who cleared our table. We would definitely come here again!!

We came to Combe Martin for the bank holiday weekend, however we had already decided before we arrived that we would book to come here after seeing the great reviews. Fortunately, we was not disappointed! We were pleasantly surprised with the way they worked the carvery, they invited tables up one by one instead of all at once so they could top up the food and keep it hot. The meat was cooked beautifully and the choice of vegetable and potatoes was more than any carvery I had ever been too, they even had sausages!Would absolutely go again and the price was also brilliant.Tip - Best to book as we wouldn't have got a table if we hadn't.

Lovely landlady and landlord, their friends and locals were very friendly too. Good choice of drinks and we danced and laughed the night away! We came to Combe Martin on a Monday and unfortunately only came across the Ye Olde George and Dragon on the Saturday when driving back from Illfracombe-as we saw it we said "that looks lovely" and made a pact to walk there later. To get there you have to keep walking from Combe Matin bay past the Pack O Cards and Castle Inn (20 mins from start). On arrival we were greeted warmly by who I'm assuming is the landlord and mused over the menu-we were immediately greeted by a member of the restaurant staff. We sat inside the restaurant and decided eventually on the Lamb chops and the Rib Eye Steak-both absolutely delicious, good portion size and great value for money; all the while being waited on hand and foot! We stayed after for a game of table tennis and a few beers and a lovely moment where we chatted to the head chef! The food was so nice that we booked for the Carvery the next day and WOW!! Not to be missed, the chef remembered us, so personable and attentive, which was nice but the food was amazing!! A must for anyone in the area!

We had found this pub in the trip advisor reviews as we were looking for a new venue for our evening meal.I had rang the owner to book and he had told me that as we had booked the week of the Combe Martin carnival parking would be very difficult and he was absolutely correct,, it was a nightmare. But having found a place to park up the hill that leads down to the pub we arrived and watched the carnival parade prior to eating, its very good and the locals make a lot of effort to put on a very good show. The pub is very well appointed with a lovely restaurant and exceptionally good staff, our waitress was super, a really nice lady. The food is great, well cooked and very well presented.I had the rib eye steak which was fantastic ,a great meal.We only had one issue which was that the piped music was being played in both the bar area and the restaurant, and it was quite loud, not my cup of tea at all but a quick word with the waitress and down went the volume , very responsive to their customers needs. We all had a great meal, costs were as you would expect for 5 people so great value for money. We shall return again . A real gem of a town centre pub.

We ate here one night, having been told to avoid the nearby Pack of Cards because the service there was very slow. That was ironic given we booked a table for 7:45 and ended up not getting our food served until 8:50. Had to chase to get a look at dessert menu after as well. 4 of the 5 main meals were very good quality the other, BBQ chicken, was dry with a paltry portion of BBQ sauce.

Good service, nice decor and perfectly good food. Rather quite for a Friday night, perhaps resulting in the lack of call for a Specials Board. The restaurant (Quackers) is a separated room at the pack of the pub.Be aware that Combe Martin has a very long high street, so though difficult to judge on the map, this is a half hour walk from the beach. Next time I would drive!

We were passing through Combe Martin and decided to stop for a for a drink and a bite to eat, and we stumbled across the George and dragon. You enter what you think is an olde worlde pub and then you find yourself in a pub restaurant that you would expect in the West end of london. We opted to sit in the sun trap of a garden with the Cheese and Wine board, which i must say was a very generous portion. The rest of the food that was being served looked to a very high standard and will definitely be going back to sample some of the fine food Lynne and her staff are serving.

A welcome return to this pub/restaurant. Great food, a good range. You would struggle not to find something for all tastes. The portions are generous, the wine list, though short in numbers, is imaginative and of good quality at a reasonable price. I recommend this establishment.

After reading a review in the guest book where we staying, we decided to try it. The restaurant is lovely inside, although small, but luckily not busy. Unfortunately they didn't have any chicken, which could have been advised when we were given the menus. Once the food came it was lovely. For the lack of choice they didn't charge us for our first round of drinks which made up for it. Lovely meal and lovely staff.

We got in for an early sitting, the 4 yr old being particular about when he eats, and were the only ones there initially. Soon to be joined by two other families with a small child each, but all well behaved and enjoyed the food as much as we did! I had lamb cutlets cooked to perfection, along with the ribeye that my partner had. Whitebait for starters were cooked in a delightfully light batter. Great service, very friendly, but also a very modern restaurant that is a little gem within its surroundings.

This was closely followed up by one of the waitresses with the menu and took our order. When the food came out it was pipping hot and a good portion as well, The desserts were just as good as the mains.Over the two weeks we stayed in the area we visited the pub several time and the foodservice and hospitality never went down. The next time we are in Combe Martin we definitely go back even just to have the cheese and wine.

Just home from a lovely break in Combe Martin with a group of ladies. We walked past the George & Dragon, and enquired with the lady outside about the Sunday Carvery there. She invited in to look at the Carvery food, and explained it would all be freshly cooked again for the evening, so we booked a table. Coming back in the evening, we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Meats and veg all cooked to perfection! I'm not usually keen on Carvery food, but this was of excellent quality. Along with the great food came excellent, and friendly staff. We played pool, and had a few drinks afterwards. Craig, Lynne and the staff were all so friendly, and made us laugh and have a fun night! We went to this restaurant for the last night of our short break in Combe Martin expecting pub sort of grub. We had to book but that was fair enough. When we got in there the whole place has had a massive overhaul from the last time I was in Combe Martin which, to be fair, was some years ago. The restaurant is comfortable and the food was amazing. Instead of sitting in a pub having pub grub we had a proper three course meal which was beautifully cooked and we literally sat and ate for most of the evening without feeling rushed away. A very comfortable and pleasant evening with great food.

We managed to get booked in at late notice thanks to the kindness of the lady who squeezed us in. As a table of 6 in an already busy restaurant, it can't have been easy, especially for the poor young waitress who was on here own serving us all. She was however, superb, very professional and kept a smile all evening. On top of this, the food was excellent, my wife and I shared some mushrooms in mozzarella and pancetta, which I would have gladly eaten as my main course it was so delicious! My main was chicken in a creamy sauce which was so moreish, especially with the Roquefort sauce I had to one side for my chips, I was in heaven! My son had what he called the best burger he has had in a restaurant. I could go on.We were also surprised at how reasonable the whole meal was. Overall, great service, exceptional food and great value.Well worth a visit.

My wife and I visited Combe Martin for the first time in September and decided to go out for something to eat having read about this place online. We were not disappointed. The whole interior of the place has clearly been totally renovated and made to feel really welcoming and inviting, with really good use made of the space with vaulted ceilings in the separate restaurant area. By the way the restaurant is called Quackers and several puns are made of this name on items on display in there, which tickled us. The food we had was freshly prepared and served in good time with the minimum of fuss, despite the place being very busy (it was a Friday night). All the staff were extremely polite, knowledgeable and attentive and the overall dining experience for us was very enjoyable. It is well worth a visit.

Ate twice here. Expected it to be a run of the mill pizza and burger joint, but not at all. Fine dining. On first night we had scallops followed by beef Wellington, both superbly cooked to order. The prices of both food and wine are very reasonable. The restaurant is modern and well designed. Our Second visit was on Saturday night. Surprised that there were only 3 or 4 tables occupied. According to a local the restaurant suffers from being a mile inland without a car park. However if you are in the area make a special effort to eat her. You won't be disappointed. Cooking like this deserves to succeed.
