My wife and I called in for Dinner my first impression was that it was very quiet, however the locals and the staff were very friendly and quite happy to chat. We decided to try the steak I had a ribeye and she who shall be obeyed had the sirloin. The chief a South African chap came out and had a chat he took our order and he could not have done it better the food was excellent made fresh to order. If you are in Combe Martin don't be put off with the negative ninny reviews, or that its a bit shabby sheik its a nice place and you should try it I will definitely be back next time I am in Combe Martin.

One of the best pubs ever, have 2 beautiful dogs that fell asleep on my lap, and were very well behaved. Food was cheap and absolutely beautiful. Chef was extremely friendly and kept us updated on our food and brought us some amazing home-made sauces. One little dog was so friendly, and jumped up on a chair if anyone stood up, and rested their head on my leg while eating which I didn't mind, but he would move if asked and would sit behind the bar. So sad I had to leave him! The staff were so wonderful and friendly and If I wasn't here on holiday I would be a regular. Absolutely loved it, keep it up guys ♡ Beautiful atmosphere and wonderful decorations with a loverly stone wall throughout. Couldn't have been better, highlight of my holiday, 10/10 recommended.

The only pub in combe Martin that is reasonably priced. Owners are great company and very friendly. This is a pub that welcomes dogs and they have 3 beautiful ones of there own and are well behaved. New chef has just started here and can not fault his food. The menu sounds a little dull but the result is spectacular in taste. The menu does not do him justice but his cooking skills are second to none. Really felt welcome here. Can not express this enough. So much so that I had to drink more than usual 🤣 Thank you all so much. Looking forward to returning and please say Hi to Taff for us. His mac and cheese is now in the oven 😋

Deceptively big sports bar with a great selection of drinks and cracking food, especially the venison burgers! We came through on a Sunday evening after a long day walking on the South West Coast Path, almost nowhere in Combe Martin was open and serving food, but the landlord here sorted us out with fantastic and very reasonably priced dinner and drinks as well as lots of friendly chat and banter. Thank you!

Shockingly no Covid compliance at all. No masks, no signs, staff on phones uninterested and locals dogs running a riot jumping up customers not to mention scaring our little boy when literally ankle biting! Couldn’t wait to leave. Landlord in and out dropping off delivery brushing past chair, interacting with customers with no mask. No sign of track and trace at all. The Pub may be 400 years old but it's been developed and knocked about by builders and occupiers over the years. There is no obvious sign any more of its history, nor that Ye Olde George and Dragon used to be pretty great, once. It had a lovely restaurant and kitchen, but when we popped in during January 2020: a man just said they didn't do food. Bizarre.

Our party ordered the Homity Pie, Sea Bass and Roast Pork. All meals were superb and we would definitely recommend this place again. It is a small family run business and the Chef (Amy or Emma not 100% sure of her name!) cooks everything from scratch which is quite a rare thing in these days of frozen chips from a bag!

We went for Sunday lunch hoping to enjoy a good meal how wrong we were. The food was of very poor standard and quantity. My sister and I ordered the Hommity Pie which consists of pastry, potatoes, leeks and a cheese sauce and a side dish of vegetables. The pastry was not cooked, potatoes were hard as were the vegetables, we not able to eat the meal. We complained about our meals as did others in our party, we did not even get an apology and the lady who completed the meals would not even speak to my sister or myself or even make eye contact with us. Sunday lunch time. Absolutely awful place to eat. When we arrived the place was empty. This should of told us all we needed to know. Ordered the catch of the day but was offered battered or plain. When the battered came out it was around 2mm thick ( hunt the fish within the batter ). Our friend ordered the plain cod which came out around 10 mm thick as in fresh cod. The two other pies ordered were not cooked, the pastry was still like a mush and not cooked. When questioned about the fish I was given there was no apology, the ( chef ) using the term very loosely went to the kitchen to produce a box of fresh fish which she insisted was what was cook for me.liar. The difference was night and day. We had no apologies just very diffenceive insisted we pay the full price for farm foods frozen fish and two under cook pies sent back whole. Even the clothing worn was grubby and dirty. Please give this place a wide birth, just not worth it, bad food with attitude. We then went to the pack of cards, well what a difference. We called in while on holiday in Combe Martin. I wasnt sure whether we should try it as most of the reviews were quite old and i think ownership had changed hands. The interior of the Bar/Restaurant was very pleasing and spacious. We ordered Potatoe skins for starters and when thet arrived they looked nice but unfortunately cold .we sent them back but when we received them they were still cool. For main courses I had sausage and mash and my wife sirloin steak. The sausage and mash looked nice with onion gravy and topped with bacon, it came in a bowl which made the food look cramped and a bigger dish would have been better. The sausages were cooked well but were more like the cheap sausages we had when i was a kid, i wish restaurants would spend more on their products. My wife really enjoyed her steak. The service was good and the young man who served us was very pleasant. I probably wouldnt go back.

I had a special of chicken and bacon topped with dauphonoise potatoes and cheese with sweet potatoto mash and my husband had sausages and mash with onion gravy topped with bacon, to follow was a smashing creme brulee and homemade mocha cake both equally delicious. After passing the pub on a Monday lunchtime it looked like a lovely place to eat at. Unfortunately it was shut but we decided to give it a try later in the week. We went at about 6.30 on a Thursday evening. As soon as we walked in we were met by a small child sitting at the bar who immediately shouted at us asking if we were eating? After replying that we were we were shown into a brightly lit restaurant which was as empty as the bar areas and atmosphereless. There was another child in this room who again was shouting. My wife did not want to eat in an empty room so we went to an area adjacent to the bar. This room was completely the opposite to the restaurant in that it was very dark. There were not that many good places to sit and there was a scooter and helmet at different tables. Whilst perusing the menu very loud rock music was blaring out of another room and the children continued to be very vocal. My wife could not think so didn't even try the menu. I could not see any restaurant standard food on the menu with it appearing to be mostly pub grub. It was not a hard decision to not eat here but instead go to the more grown up Pack of Cards down the road. Whilst there a couple more people came in then left soon after, probably due to it being more like a youth club. This was not a good experience which we thought was a real shame. At £3.50 a pint, the cider was good value though.

Would rate this as Fine Dining and fail to comprehend why it wasn't busy. Took the family on holiday but we noted that lone diners are welcomed too. Not busy for a Sunday but that means nothing at all. Beautifully furnished restaurant. Immediately greeted by an efficient young lady and shown to a table. The carvery was very, very good, meat covered, all food hot. Very tasty and plentiful. Chef (we assume) was most charming and she even checked we were all okay. We visited the George and Dragon on the recommendation of a taxi driver and we owe him a big thank you. Four of us went there last Saturday evening. We received a very warm welcome from the landlady, who is also the chef, and from the lady behind the bar. We made our choices from the superb menu. It was particularly nice for myself to have several vegetarian choices on both the starter and mains, All the food is cooked to order and tastes so wonderfully fresh. Two of us had the onion soup to start and we both agreed it was sensational, the very best onion soup we'd ever had. My friend had a very retro prawn cocktail and my husband had the whitebait. Both of these dishes were pronounced amazing. For main course our two friends had a chicken dish (sorry I can't remember what it was called), my husband had chicken cacciatore and I had the vegetarian cacciatore. All the food arrived at the table piping hot and beautifully presented. The depth of flavour was out of this world. We had two bottles of extremely good Sauvignon Blanc, served nice and chilled, The portions were very generous. The restaurant at the back of the pub overlooks the countryside so it is a lovely place to have a meal. The bill was very reasonable and I would recommend anyone staying in Coombe Martin to have a meal here; it was easily the best meal we had during our stay. We visited Saturday 27th May, bank holiday weekend with my inlaws. We had such an amazing carvery when we visited last August bank holiday that we decided to re visit again this time whilst staying in Combe Martin. We pre booked the table the evening before as thought it would be busy on a Saturday night. Alarm bells should have set in when they said it was quiet! When we arrived we realised it wasn't the same owners, but it looked the same and sure thought it would be ok, it was quiet with only one table occupied (around 8 people). We were greeted by a nice lady ordered a drink and showed to our table, we ordered our food (great menu, very varied) and enjoyed a drink, whilst a couple then came in and a party of 12 or so with a newborn baby around 30 min later. After an hour or so we saw the couple had been given their meal but up and left quickly after only eating couple mouthfuls, a young waitress then asked "have u ordered"? We replied yes over an hour a go" this is not acceptable as it was quiet, we were told it was in its way! Ten more minutes passed and the party next to us decided they were not waiting for an hour for their food and left, we too decided to do the same. So disappointed :( We all upand left and went over the road to the chippy, not quite what I was expecting on a weekend away with my inlaws. We will not be re visiting and they need to up there game before the summer season because clearly they can't cope now.

Prime time on a Saturday night and the restaurant was totally empty. A young child enquired if we were there to eat as if it was an event. Our group knew immediately that things were not quite right and we should have left then and there. However we were out for a meal and our options were limited as The Pack of Cards just down the road was fully booked. We skipped any thoughts of a starter and just ordered a main course. It took ages to come and when it arrived it was hopelessly overcooked. The tuna steak was very dry and the strips of steak were extremely tough and almost inedible. Even the potatoes were a disaster. We drowned our sorrows in a couple of bottles of wine. We will never go back.

After spending the day down the beach and having 3 children desperately wanting a hot dinner, we were looking for a place that were still serving a carvery at 5pm on a Sunday, we searched on trip advisor and found this place. We called ahead of time to be told by Tanya (owner) that we were welcome. We arrived to a table set up for us, all ready with a highchair in place for my granddaughter.Well I must say that we've never felt more welcome in any establishment as we did here. Our young children, 12 (mental age of 5), 9 and 1, were free to be themselves and weren't expected to just sit quietly, Tanya interacted with them all, as well as us. And on top of this, made sure we had a good fill of delicious carvery food! The barmaid (sorry didn't catch your name) was extremely attentive too. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the fact they are 4 hours drive from where we live, which means this place can't be my local! However, after having a lovely long weekend in Devon, we can't wait to return, and we will 100% be returning to Ye Olde George and Dragon.Well done guys on not only the delicious food...but for being such awesome people. After being there approximately an hour or so, I can honestly say...we won't forget you! With kind regards, Tracey (Nan), Sarah, Sharna, Lily and baby Amber x

This establishment has been known locally as "The Bottom George" for as long as I can remember. Last time we went, in late 2015 I think, it served the finest Sunday lunches in Ilfracombe or Barnstaple, with a professional catering team and good food. People raved about it & its only local rival, the Pack O' Cards, had some real competition. The Old George has since changed hands, so maybe time for a review from an old experienced hand. First, do they have a professional chef, hungry to make their name? Not obviously. We had a very generous Sunday lunch which was just okay; cost: around a tenner plus drinks. The food could (must) be kept hotter, served hot and replenished regularly. These are basics that a Commis or a waitress would know.Hobbying is now the norm, in North Devon's DIY amateur kitchens and Cafes and the region's food is poorer for it. Prices are rising; VFM and service standards continue to fall. Get it right professionally, serve great food, and the business will thrive. They made a few changes at "The George"but it's still the same layout. This is still a great looking pub, well appointed and well decorated. We should give newcomers a chance and see how they develop, they might prove us wrong.

Recently visited Ye Olde George and Dragon in Combe Martin, very relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and ordered a steak. I was a bit disconcerted to hear that someone was complaining about the steak they had been served and, the waiting time. My steak was served to me within fifteen minutes, was cooked beautifully and, had obviously been rested properly because it was very tender. As I have been a chef for over eighteen years I believe that I do know what I'm on about, and as for the complaining man it was interesting to see that he had managed to clear his plate before he complained! Maybe there is such a thing as a free lunch if you are enough of a t..t!

My partner and I fancied a bite to eat in the wonderfully decorated restaurant, with its' fantastic glass dome ceiling, and were really pleased with our meals. The restaurant, and pub, were lovely and warm and the owners, Tanya and Steve together with the staff, were very welcoming. The menu offers plenty of choice and everything was cooked fresh to order. We will be back to try the carvery another time and would highly recommend eating here any day of the week!

It seems that we had the complete opposite experience to everyone else who has posted a review here. I would liken it to the worst kind of Tinder dating. Full of promise and anticipation in that the place looks nice, but the food turns up an hour later after ordering and bears no resemblance to what's written on the menu.

Staying in Coombe Martin for half term also coincided with my wife's 50th birthday. I was looking for a pub in the town offering something other than Sunday Lunch. Although the George normally only offers this too, Tanya very kindly allowed me to book in advance from the main menu. Tanya and her staff were very attentive and the food was great. It made for a very special Sunday afternoon that we all enjoyed. Well done to everyone at the George and thank you.

We go to the George and dragon, ilfracombe, for pub bits but also for their fortnightly singalong accompanied by local folk with their instruments.

What a night at the George and Dragon!!My husband and I took my Nan and Grandad to the Night of Musicals and 3 course meal event. It was a fantastic evening all around. The Italian bases food was home cooked and of which we could have as much as we wanted was delicious!!Tanya then performed some classic hits from the West End and Broadway. Wow, what a Voice and talent to have in the village!!! She can seriously sing. Tanya has traveled all over the world and even performed two songs from a classical Opera at the end of the evening which were not n request and superb! Her husband ( Sorry I didn't catch your name! ) spent a long time chatting to us and promoting future events planned at the Bottom George! ... of which we as a family will definitely attend. So Thank you both for a lovely night! And any future events hosted I would definitely recommend you take a look and support them!

Both the landlord and his wife made us and our children very welcome. The homemade food (beef chilli and chicken in breadcrumbs) was delicious and excellent value for money. The free pool table was a hit with the kids.

Attentive staff and good food but with limited selection. Only 1x Plaice and 1x Lamb-shank. ☹️

Stunning food. Danny the chief (and waiter) makes virtually everything from scratch including his mouth watering slaw, fish gumbo source, sticky chicken wings. A real chief and NOT another “re heat pretender”. Everything food wise is stunning. This isn’t a poshed up bistro pub with fake interior, but a local pub that has swapped licensees a few times over the last couple of years (the current management are here to stay and returned after being here before) so the decor is a bit tired. But it is a REAL local Nth Devon Pub that serves stunning food. You’ll notice that good food in Devon, costs as much as the big cities (portion here are bigger), but blame the exchequer for that, quiet winters and expensive suppliers. It’s not a cheap meal, but when you want to eat something of much higher standard than you can cook at home, this is one of our go to places. Probably the best food in the whole area that has a mixed menu.
