The Crown Inn in North Devon

What a lovely find. Had a puncture and the landlady could not have been more helpful, even calling the local store to get me a repair kit! Plus, great beer which was excellent value. Thank you so much. I will be back with my friends later in the year.

Had a really lovely meal today with my family. Child and dog friendly and great food. Shame about the weather outside! Lovely semi rural pub within a few miles of Woolacombe. Highly recommend for Sunday lunch also

Superbly renovated Devon inn at the heart of West Down village, near Ilfracombe, that played host to the three of us. Excellent accomodation that is both very comfortable & ultra quiet. First class food, great range of local beers & a pool table that was in constant use by us.

Great place , six of us went for a meal unfortunately they got one meal wrong ordered two gammon and one scampi and got one gammon and two scampi but deducted the scampi so can't complain, the other two meals were as ordered. Staff very friendly and food was good, would return if we were in the area again.

Came here for Valentines Day for the first time since the new owners took over and I’ve got to say I was well impressed with the food and the service from start to finish. Will definitely be back! Great menu choices that were reasonably priced, lovely atmosphere and the food was absolutely sublime. It was clear to see that the staff would go above and beyond. If you’re a looking for a new pub to try for some grub or if you’re on holiday and looking for somewhere nice to go that will accept dogs then this is your place to go!!

They hosted our riding club for a charity quiz tonight (North Devon Riding Club). The staff were all lovely, full of smiles and extremely busy! The food (curry night) was absolutely delicious with big hearty portions. Massive thanks for hosting us tonight, our club had a fantastic time. We would love it if there were a couple of tie rings for our horses so we can come past for a pint or two in the daytime!!

Good to see its open again after so long. Nice Dec although strange inconsistencies. Locals sit around the bar and don't move. This makes it very difficult to get to the bar and choose a beer. Not a great beer selection.

We have just returned home after two nights in the pub. It is a warm, welcoming, family pub, run by Sue, Mark and Georgia. Food was wonderful, and there was a great choice of drinks! We will definitely be back, if just for the gorgeous welcome and the fried bread!

Great looking pub the waitresses were lovely. The meal was nice but the beef was very tough and those that had it took most of it home for their dog. We did have a problem with the menu and unfortunately this was not dealt with as we would have liked which did ruin the evening a little. Could have been more helpful.

Hadn’t been to this venue since new owners took over and pleased to say we will definitely be going again. Lovely helpful staff, very good food and wonderful atmosphere. We went on a Wednesday which was steak night, steaks were perfectly cooked and our two dogs were comfortably curled up in front of the fire

Superb traditional village based Devon inn that has been very well renovated including excellent accommodation plus first class food, great range of local beers & hosts that play cribbage. What more is there? Going back.

Absolutely lovely pub dinner. My dad and I came for fish and chips on a Monday night. Really friendly welcome, great Guinness and beautiful fish, chips, peas and onion rings. Lovely light batter and gorgeous fish. Really tasty ice cream for dessert. Super friendly couple running a proper village pub.

8 of us enjoyed Sunday lunch there this week. A nice drink in the garden was followed by a very tasty Sunday roast. Absolutely charming staff who could not have been nicer. definitely worth a visit.

I visited this evening with some friends for a long overdue catch up. Staff were very welcoming, lovely atmosphere. Very friendly locals. The food was really good, 8 guys all ate well and everyone enjoyed their meals. Clearly, thought has been given to using local suppliers and the menu offered a good selection so everyone was happy. Good selection of beers on tap including the local ale brewed in Ilfracombe Beach Blond. I was offered a sample and over the evening enjoyed a few. So pleased not to be the designated driver. Will definitely be returning soon and happy to recommend to all.

Great food, drinks, hospitality and the Devon welcome that’s hard to describe. Had an amazing Sunday lunch for 8 plus 2 children. We were celebrating our sons birthday. It was perfect!

Whilst staying in west down for 10 days we we lucky enough to be located close to this wonderful village inn. Sue, mark and team (who have only recently taken over) make patrons feel very welcome, whether you are a regular or visitor you are made to feel you belong. Mark cooks wonderful meals with quality local produce, & a well thought out daily menu to compliment this. Booking is advised as it gets very busy!! Great news for the pub industry. With a well stocked bar, friendly faces and beautiful food what’s not to love??

Really enjoyed our "spur of the minute" visit to the Crown. Easily found on the village square, we felt welcome from the minute we arrived. Liver and bacon is an old favourite and did not disappoint. The Eton Mess which followed was scrummy too. Plenty of ambience and we will definitely go back

Great evening with friends. Lovely table in the window in the clean and quaint pub. Amazing range of drinks and really strong vegeterian choices. Warm and friendly atmosphere. Made us feel very welcome. Will definately return.

If you are in the area this place is definitely worth a visit. We had our son's birthday meal there while staying in Ilfracombe. It was delicious, all of us enjoyed the meal and puds. The staff could not do enough, they were kind and even put out the bunting for the birthday boy! (you don't get that kind of attention where we live). Cannot speak highly enough of this Inn.

We visited while stay at Pipcott Fields campsite next door. The menu is varied and has something for all tastes,best described as traditional pub food cook very well ,with something a bit different on the specials board. The Crown is immaculate throughout and the staff warm and friendly. It is best to book ad they get busy.

This is a great country pub with a good menu of home cooked food at reasonable prices. The specials were particularly tempting with a couple of options I could have gone for. Interesting real ales on tap too

Visited this establishment on 16/09/22 had a beautiful steak dinner and delicious dessert. Booked for the following evening and our preferred meal of liver and bacon was off the menu so opted for the Steak and ale pie -BIG MISTAKE - pastry so thin and over cooked disappeared on touching, the meat, in large chunks, was recycled and very dry, Vegetables hard as nails. SO disappointed. Both meals were returned almost untouched. Told the waitress who discounted the price of our drinks. Decided on apple and blackberry crumble which, when it arrived , was virtually inedible, the lumps of apple still had the skins and core visible, the ‘crumble ‘ was overcooked and resulted in a mush in the dish. A Very disappointing meal. We will not be returning !

Would highly recommend The Crown in West Down. We were a party of 6 adults and two kids and received a very warm welcome from lovely and efficient staff for an early dinner. Menu was simple and very delicious with some lovely specials on offer. Decor inside is stylish, relaxing and cosy.

My arancini (rice balls in spicy tomato sauce) was disappointing as the rice was boring and the sauce seemingly mainly tinned tomatoes; my partners shallot "tart" was simply a pastry base with caramelised onions placed on top - clearly not a tart !Mains of beef lasagne and scampi were good though the scampi were described as "wholetail scampi" which I assume means "small". Staff were very friendly.

Lovely country pub near all the main areas and beaches and in a quiet little village. We stayed for five nights with breakfast. Excellent service and food. Gets booked up for evening meals so book early. Owners are very helpful and attentive. The room has all the usual amenities and has a great shower too. Fish and chip van visits on a Monday near the inn. Would definitely recommend to stay and we would stay again.

We had a meal there for our31st wedding anniversary, wife had a lasagna and it was burnt to the bottom of the dish , after complaining we were told it was normal because the oven was very hot. Their attitude changed after that to being obnoxious. I suggest people stay clear of the place.

We visited as a family, the meal was a let down unfortunately due to a £22 steak which was pretty much inedible, very very chewy. We mentioned twice to the two different servers but nothing was said other than they’d pass it on. Other than this the meals were nice. £10 build a burger would have been a better option.

We just had the most wonderful dinner here, 2 adults, 15 years, 11 years and 18 months. The staff could not have been more polite and attentive. Great selection of food, including a ‘build a burger’ and specials board. The food was home cooked and fresh, very tasty, good portions but not too much. The puddings were fabulous, large portions.Good selection of local beers and some local guns.Couldn’t fault it, if we’re ever back in the area again we will definitely eat here again!!

Lovely roast dinner, everything was great even a proper gravy, the exception was the broccoli too hard to get your knife through almost rawn and one double meat order missing half the meat. However compliments to the serving female staff very attentive and quick to get condiments and an order of extra roast potatoes. Would recommend their Sunday roast, delicious, decent, roast potatoes perfectly cooked roast meats and a proper gravy. Great desserts worth every penny.We did order 2 tap waters after dessert and it’s was a funny colour and tasted different I think it gave us a bit of a funny tummy as not used to it… so maybe avoid tap water if not local.

Gorgeous little village pub tucked away in the countryside. Very Covid-sensible, staff in masks, tables well spaced out. Immense burgers and great beer choices. Staff were lovely throughout.

Found this excellent Inn on The Devon app. They managed to find us a table eating very early. We were impressed with their menu. It's very good value supported by good service & staff.

Had a friend recommend this establishment, and it didn't disappoint. With only two young ladies serving and running the place. They gave us a lovely welcome, and the service throughout our stay was brilliant.Food was lovely, I had steak my wife had the special of liver. Sadly as being so popular, they had run out of two of the puddings. Great place would certainly recommend.

The Crown Inn does not disappoint. It excels as a B&B and pub restaurant. Our room was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. We stayed for 4 nights and decided to take our evening meals at the Crown because the food was consistently good. The service and help from Abby, James, Georgia and Rachel was excellent. All covid regulatory requirements were fastidiously followed by the staff.

We had such an enjoyable evening: excellent food; great local produce and beers; fabulous relaxed atmosphere and genuine hospitality from the friendly owners. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for 2 days and had an amazing stay. James and Abby made us so welcome and could not do enough for us. The room was immaculate and the bed was so comfortable, with a large walk in shower. It is so quite and peaceful there to. The breakfast was lovely. We had a meal there at night and it was delicious.

We stayed for two nights and ate in the restaurant the second night. You need to book but it is excellent. The specials board had some great options. Breakfasts are large, with fantastic local produce. Would definitely recommend and would stay again if in the area.

Come down to West Down, North Devon, to see friends and have a holiday. Stayed at an excellent campsite opposite the pub (Pipcott) and went to the pub for a meal. Quaint, pretty looking pub from the outside and not disappointed on the inside with excellent decor. Had a fantastic meal, chosen from the specials menu. Can’t fault it at all. The land lord and land lady were really friendly. Felt for them as lots of bookings and failed to turn up. The pub was clean and set out allowing social distancing. Would definitely return.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the crown inn . Food was fab ,even if meal and breakfast very well presented and tasted great . Really nice meal here - just opened up again and was quiet but felt very COVID safe as a result. Staff attentive and pleasant and food excellent. Well worth a visit.

Because of lockdown The Crown had only just opened for business when we visited, and it was only possible to eat and drink outdoors. The pub has good gardens behind and we ate there. The staff were very attentive. There was only a limited menu on offer but we were happy with our choices which were well prepared and served especially the whitebait starter, scampi and fries and chicken with melted brie. We also enjoyed the good local ale and a lovely red wine. All in all we had a good meal at a very fair price.

This is our second time staying West Down in the same cottage. We came down in September and fell in love with the village, so much so we came back in Nov!The pub is great! Abbie really looked after us and was very attentive. The food was delicious and generous portions!We couldn't fault anything!Dog friendly as well is a massive bonus. So if you're on the area you will need to book a table but it's worth it. We ate in the pub 5 out of 7 nights. Very covid safe. Thank you Abbie!!Hopefully see you in January. Nearest pub to our holiday location at the West Down caravan club site. Found car park full but fortunately there is a public car park in the housing estate beyond the Crown a very short distance away. Old fashioned village pub, much to our taste. One way circuit in and out with their tables all properly spaced and table service only. Enjoyable meal - lamb shank and fish and chips. Pleasant serving team and reasonably priced.Would recommend.

We visited the pub for dinner one evening while staying at Little Comfort Farm. We walk up from the farm it’s quite a walk mostly up hill but so beautiful and means we are always ready for a nice meal by the time we gat to the pub. Puddings went down really well and gave us the energy for our walk back down to the farm! It was very well managed regarding social distancing/ covid procedures in place. Food was lovely and service good.

Came here for dinner with my daughter and as pub food goes, it’s at the upper end. We both had starters, mains and desserts and all six dishes were very good. The build a burger is a good idea rather than having a load of options on the menu and the whitebait starter / skate main that I had were both very well done. Would have preferred not to have been say so close to the door and the breeze when it’s left open is pretty cold but that minor moan aside, the food and service were both great. Recommended.

This must have been my 4th stay at the crown. Even when I don’t stay here I always go for at least one meal and drinks! The food is incredible, the staff are so welcoming which means a lot, especially when travelling alone! Abbi and James run the most incredible pub and accommodation is always clean and rooms are so comfortable. I couldn’t recommend this place any more highly! If you could give more than 5 stars I would!! They currently have very sensible Covid measures in place so felt totally at ease in these strange times!

A local pub with a good reputation which we felt was well organised as far as precautions against Covid 19 go. That is where my praise of the place stops. We went specifically to have steak but it was not available although still on the printed menu while another dish had been struck off. This at 6.30pm on a Wednesday (I could have understood if it was 9pm on a bank holiday Monday). Nothing left on the mains my husband wanted so he ordered whitebait as a main course, not well cooked, still slippery fish not nice and crispy. The side of chips were very mediocre as well. The skate dish which two of us had was OK but nothing special and the chicken was VERY spicy which rather spoilt it. Those who have given the place such good reviews obviously went when there was a qualified chef on duty or have low expectations. We like to support our local businesses but were not encouraged to return, despite voicing our displeasure to the waiter. All we got was "sorry there was no steak". We will not be going back. We managed two bottles of wine, the first was cold but the second could have been colder. There was one good bit of food, the bread.

This is a really cosy pub with fantastic rooms and great food. The service is excellent too. Can’t recommend it more, great value compared to some of the more expensive pretentious hotels in the area.
