Poor service the moment we arrived. Had a table booked, we arrived 15 minutes before and was seated straight away. No menus were given. Waitress came over to take our order and realised we had none. 4 things were off the menu so we didn’t really have much choice (completely different menu to on Facebook aswell). A steak was ordered, asked if we could have peppercorn sauce, to which we were told “not sure if we do that, I’ll go ask and let you know” - to which we were never told. No steak knife was given, the steak was cold, and tasted very vinegary. The castle burger was also ordered, very burnt, dry and no sauce which it stated in the menu. The only thing warm on both our plates were the chips. Wasn’t even asked if our food was ok. Was meals that we could have quite easily cooked at home and saved money on. Overall, a bad experience and defiantly not worth £24 for the steak and £14 for the burger.

We've just returned from a lovely stay at the Castle Inn. The landlady and staff were all super friendly and we felt very welcome. We stayed the night and the room was lovely. Very clean with an incredibly comfy bed and the bathroom was very modern and spotless. We had breakfast which was delicious and would definitely recommend this place. We took our dog who was made very welcome too. Will definitely stay here again if we're in this area.

We only stayed for one night but we loved this place! Rachel (I am so sorry if I've got it wrong my lovely) was most welcoming and friendly. Her customer service was excellent. Amanda is a great landlady as well as a great cook! Super friendly and has time to have a chat with customers. Dinner was freshly cooked and delicious. For breakfast there was fruits, cereals and a cooked breakfast made to order. Both meals were lovely. Our room was outstanding! Very clean, the bed was REALLY comfortable and the shower was to die for! Over all, I can highly recommend this place if you are a proper, down to earth person who enjoys a proper, down to earth pub. Because, that is what this is.

We were staying up the road in the Woodland Retreats & wondered down to have a mid walk drink here & so glad we did. It's a great little pub with a pool table, dart board, little resturant & the rooms above for overnight looked amazing. Dog friendly & the bar staff were AMAZING. If we didn't have plans we likely would have eaten here that evening & continued the flowing drinks. Worth a stop.

Nice place, could have been a good experience but the food was no better and probably worse than some frozen burger & chips meal you could have bunged in the oven at home. Absolutely no sign that any effort was taken to make it any better than that and the empty seating around the place told you the impression wasn't wrong. I only write this to save others the disappointment we felt.

This is a nice looking pub in a good location with a small sunny, fully paved beer garden. It could be a lovely place to sit however there was dog poo everywhere at one end! This is the second time we have visited, hoping that the first was a one-off but no, it seems this shared area is the dog toilet…and the volume was clearly from over a period of days. Drinks were even served outside with staff oblivious - incredible. A health hazard, particularly if you have children. Disgusting!

After encountering a road closure on our expected route across Devon from Tavistock to this village, and hence an unsigned diversion along some of the county's most minor roads (single track, lush spring growth billowing out from the sides, hiding goodness knows what in the way of stones or ruts) we were somewhat frazzled on arrival. The warm welcome and obviously peaceful village environment soon enabled that to be forgotten, so after a short time in our room we went back down for an evening meal. My partner chose the Hunter's Chicken, whilst I went for the Venison Sausage Casserole. Both were very enjoyable, and were also pretty large portions. My pint of Butcombe bitter was good too, whilst my partner partook of a large glass of Merlot. We were staying at this pub for two nights; the room was large with a view of the main village street, the church behind houses across the road, and the rolling green hills beyond. George Nympton is a very small village, so there was little traffic to disturb the overall quietness. The bed was quite high but comfortable, and the room contained an interesting mixture of old and new features and furniture, not to mention a good choice of teas and coffees including a pod-type coffee machine. On the first morning we were one of only two couples taking breakfast, whilst on the second there was just us. The service was very friendly, with a good choice of items; on day one I had excellent scrambled egg and my partner chose poached, then on day two I enjoyed a 'full English' whilst she had a more modest combination of bacon and tomato.

We visited this restaurant some two years ago and had a really lovely Sunday roast. We returned this year 2022 and made a point of booking a table only to be very upset. Nothing like our first visit must have changed management. Who has a Sunday roast without Yorkshire pudding? Only four selections to choose from.

This place should have it all. A lovely old pub in a picturesque North Devon village with a lovely, smiley, hard working front of house crew. Great beer and generously proportioned wine servings. Sadly that’s about it on the plus side. The major problem is with the menu. It bears no relation to the extensive and appetising “Sample Menu” on their website. A few basic dishes scribbled on a blackboard is the reality, with several of those “sold out” when we visited on a Saturday night at the peak of the August tourist season. Soggy chips, gristly steak and vegetables served 10 minutes after our companions had finished their main course give the impression of a bunch of well intentioned amateurs who are seriously out of their depth. So if you just want a drink, served by nice people, and aren’t too bothered about food then fine, just don’t believe what you read online.

Lovely, friendly staff. Very welcoming. Clean, modern en suite rooms. Huge comfy bed, makes for a good night's sleep. (I'm a person who normally has problems sleeping anywhere other than my own bed) Luxurious shower room with quality towels and bathrobes provided. Tea tray well stocked and fresh milk provided instead of horrible little uht pots. Breakfast and evening meals are brilliant. Good variety of meals (rump steak was cooked to perfection as I'd requested). Dog friendly too, so furry friends can join you on your breaks! A real comforting home from home feel.

We booked a room here on the strength of a previous visit when we had some wonderful food. The website is from the previous owner and does not tell you that the pub has changed hands over the last few months. I agree with the previous reviews regarding the locals and the rowdy behaviour.. the beer garden out back was full of locals who were loud and had preferrential service..it was loud until late into the night..and service in the pub was not good.. I was surprised when i asked to see a menu and there was no allergen information against any of the food advertised..as by law it should be available.. I have several allergies and felt very unsure of what i would be getting to eat.. The owner did try to advise but she clearly had no idea what was in any of the food...Main course was acceptable but the desert was very poor and i was unable to eat it due to poor quality which i pointed out to the owner.. Breakfast was acceptable thankfully but we would not return to this pub/B & B its sadly not a patch on the previous owners ..

The absolute worst place we have ever been to eat!! I am not very picky at all and never thought myself to be someone writing a bad review.. but me, my 3 year old and 1 year old are SICK because of the food we ate here not even an hour ago... I can't quite believe how bad it was. We had the 'vegetarian nut roast' my partner had roast beef, every item of food on our plates was clearly frozen. When the food arrived my plate was forgotten about so they said they were starting it now and it shouldn't be long.. 3 minutes later my plate arrives, parts of it were steaming hot and parts of it were cold, all of it clearly chucked in the microwave. I'm so disappointed this trip has ruined our day and made us sick. Not worth risking your money or your health.

We thought we would give the Castle the benefit of the doubt after a previously awful visit which a rowdy bunch of locals spoiled our dinner. However, we will not be returning. The food was bland and the vegetables tasted tinned! Pre and during our meal there was a group of locals sitting around the bar area with one ignorant individual watching live horse racing on his phone! Dreadful experience once again. We will certainly not be returning and will be taking the venue off our guests recommended list.

We had dinner here one evening back in September with our toddler. We booked a table which was necessary as it was very busy. We had the chicken and beef pies, children's lasagne with potatoes, followed by lime cheesecake and white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. The mains were excellent and it would be hard to have made them better. The desserts were very good but not quite to the same standard as the mains were. We'd happy eat here again if we were in the area.

Great food in friendly village pub. Good sized portions at reasonable prices. Superb range of desserts all home made. Little off beaten track but is well worth finding

Having stayed at the Castle Inn on two separate occasions recently we can honestly say that the food (evening & breakfast) rooms & hosts are all brilliant, and we would highly recommend it to all. Craig & Pam Davies

Have lived locally for a while but never visited. Decided to do so on a friends recommendation and so went with some friends who were visiting for the weekend. The staff couldn't do enough to make the visit an enjoyable experience. The food was very good and the service was equally good. It was also very good value. Will visit again even if only for a lunchtime snack. Worth checking the opening times.

We had a really good lunch experience here recently. The staff were friendly and the food was very good. The best thing about this pub is that it is honest and refreshingly unpretentious. No food on “slates” here ! The desserts were amazing , the best in the area. Definitely the best pub food in the South Molton area.

Great pub in small village. Only a few rooms but ours was very good, large with all the modern facilities we come to expect. The meal in the pub was excellent and great value. A very good selection of beers and wine list offered reasonable prices. We enjoyed a very nice freshly cooked breakfast and our stay was most enjoyable, we shall come back again.

We ate at the Castle Inn on the first night of our recent half-term break to North Devon and enjoyed it so much we came back on the last night. Ian, the landlord is extremely friendly and made us feel really welcome - including our dog!

Stayed for 1 night on way up too the north coast of devon. Well presented in a gorgeous small quiet village. Stayed in superior king size room, spotlessly clean, very victorian ambience which i loved.Bed very comfy with lovely crisp clean white sheets, could not falter room. Had an evening meal and full cooked breakfast and have too say they were both fabulous, homemade and all local produce. Beautiful ! Will definitely recommend. Thank you.

Stayed here for a second time and it is excellent. The owners Ian and Debbie are just first class, the rooms are clean and well appointed and the food is excellent. We cannot fault it and will return very soon. Thank you both for your kindness, superb service and food.

Nice little back street locals pub on the outskirts of Braunton. We did not eat there, but we wish we had, the food looked amazing and smelled delicious. Good range of well-kept beers and ciders. Super friendly atmosphere, well worth the walk.

What a lovely friendly pub, we came for a weekend and visited twice, the pint system blowed me away, and lush to meet Winky and you, Rich & Wendy x

Lovely staff. Nice atmosphere nice log burner. Good music, games and interiors. Quite expensive for what it was. Good mains but chips were frozen fries and undercooked. When going to a pub you would expect home made chips apart from that was a lovely pub. For the pricing expected more home cooked food.
