THE Black horse in North Devon

Stopped in for a couple of pints after finishing a leg of the South West Coast Path. Liked the look of a traditional pub. Stayed for dinner and weren’t disappointed. Very tasty mains and starters. Well worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Excellent friendly and helpful service. Good menu and great food.

Absolutely amazing food . Tasty . Presented well and served with a smile . We all had the Sunday roast and every dish was full of flavour and the meat was tender . Followed by delicious pudding. Will definitely be going back

I ate with a friend tonight - I had lamb starter and mussels main and it was beautiful. Friend had chicken starter and lamb shank main and said the same. Service was excellent and I hope it gets the atmosphere back- it deserves it. A good night.

Great cosy pub probably the best food in Braunton when writing this

Wow! Received a very warm welcome when we arrived, ordered drinks and were shown to our seats. Amazing food - beyond our expectations and will definitely return (we need to, to work our way through the menu. We both ordered lamb rump and were both shocked with the amount of meat that was on our plates which was cooked to perfection. Pub had such a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere

This is exactly what a pub should be. Great food, reasonably priced; a good selection of ales and gin, great atmosphere, friendly locals and a landlord who is as friendly and funny as he is efficient. The only downside is that being 150 miles away from home it cant be my local!

What a surprise to find such good quality food in a pub in Braunton at last and even more for such a reasonable price. The menu is fairly short but beautifully balanced. a choice of several starters, five mains and a few sweets. Only the two of us and we both had the chicken chorizo which was exquisite. The chef, Dan, knows how to cook. Other things which we hope to see when next in Braunton are the arancini which we saw and also heard lovely comments about from the next table and the sticky pork. A nice selection of wines, beer straight from the barrel in perfect condition and the prompt service by the landlord, Grant, was friendly, funny and most welcoming. What a gem to find which we are going to visit again when next in the area.

Lovely pub, great atmosphere for a cosy drink. Didn't eat but menu looked great and food coming out matched that. Only downside was not much space for drinkers if they'd like a seat but definitely worth going

Hidden away in the old part of braunton has a lovely welcoming feel to the place and away from the crowds.Great meal in a lovely pub feel . Had tuna which was amazing but all the dishes in a group of 8 of us were fantastic. gastro pub style but reasonably priced . Had a lovely pint of ale and will definitely be red. Didn’t want to write a review to share as it will get busy but that’s not fair on the business

Good Food, good service, great visit

Good quality restaurant that is now probably the best restaurant in Braunton. The Black Horse is primarily a pub but its restaurant serves top quality restaurant food. And there is still a great range of real ales.

Had an excellent meal , food was very well presented , especially the deserts. Wine prices very reasonable . Great service nothing too much trouble. I will definitely be recommending .

Excellent, quality, expertly cooked food. We have been three times, good choice of freshly cooked food. Plus point was that half of the menu was gluten free but still delicious. Grant is really helpful. Looking forward to seeing the new menu next week. Prices reasonable. If you don't want to eat you can enjoy a drink in a real "pub" inside or at one of the tables out in the fresh air.

We’ve visited this pub frequently over the years and it’s had many different owners. Thought we’d pop by yesterday and we were really pleased to see what the new owner had done. Great friendly service, really lovely food and a good atmosphere. It’s only about 5 min walk out of the main drag of braunton and it’s well worth seeking out. We’ll definitely return when we next visit the area in a couple of months.

We've been coming to Braunton for 3 years now and found the Black Horse this year.What a find for the 4 of us! Food was excellent, service was superb and the drinks menu was varied and really good. Lovely convivial atmosphere blending a locals vibe as well as attractive to outside guests such as us. Hats off to the landlord/owner, who has clearly put a lot of work and effort into developing the pub restaurant itself as well as the astute recruitment of chef(s) and staff. Congratulations to you all but particularly to the owner/landlord. Your experience and knowledge of the hospitality game are very obvious. Your time in Yorkshire has served you well! Keep doing what you are doing and good luck for the future.

Another great meal - the sea bass with Asian noodles was superb. All served in a relaxed atmosphere with great hosting. Would be better to have a wine list rather than just listing off types as didn’t feel I could ask questions eg like Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand but not from chile

Visited on a Saturday evening, the staff were absolutely brilliant and really attentive. The food was excellent and great quality with large portions. However, it was let down by the acoustics as it was so noisy, I could hardly hear anything. As well there were strong wafts of cigarette smoke from time to time noticeable throughout the visit, that were unpleasant. This sadly ruined the evening for me.

Crap. Waited at the bar for 15 minutes, no service,no staff. Left.I guess if you're not a 'local' they aren't interested. I live locally and won't be returning.

STOP PRESS ! ! This great pub is now under new management, and a very experienced management too !! Welcome to Grant and Dan two top blokes who are passionate about the Black Horse and bringing back the feeling of a lovely old world pub, warm, good beer and excellent quality food. Last night we met friends and after a nice chat with Grant decided to have a meal. For starters we chose crispy king prawns , Arancini , baked goats cheese and chicken liver pâté. Mains were 3x crispy sticky pork, and chicken and chorizo. The food and service was amazing and so looking forward to doing it again :) Please call in and say hello and you will be given a warm welcome, also, don’t be afraid to talk to the locals, they can be seen in the corner on the left, opposite the bar. Try the Real ales as well 👍

On Wednesday, last 10 of us decided to partake in the evening menu of the Black Horse, there was a reasonable selection on the menu, and the consensus of opinion, at the end of the night was, it was excellent, Dan did an excellent job as chef while his side kick Grant was an excellent waiter 🤣🤣 We also really enjoyed it. I will be using you both again. Thanks very much.

New Landlords, We called in March 1st,2nd, for drinks, Very friendly and welcoming, tried to get in on friday 3rd but was packed, Returned on Saturday 4th for dinner, Couldn't fault the food, So tasty, great service And good value, definitely will return on our next visit.

We've always enjoyed this pub for its friendly traditional atmosphere. So it's lovely to have a new permanent landlord at the Black Horse. Grant has introduced a really delicious new menu, sticky pork was a favourite. We were really looked after us recently, we had friends from all over in the pub after my mum's funeral, and despite it being the same night as launching their new menu, Grant and Dan adjusted things to suit us, and couldn't have been more accommodating. Looking forward to bringing the kids for Sunday lunch soon.

Came here for Sunday dinner. Gorgeous food and all homemade. It was one of the best Sunday dinners I have had out. Friendly staff and all the meat is locally sourced. I would definitely recommend.

Great little local pub. The staff are mega friendly, very reasonable prices on drinks, with some lovely ales on cask. Curry night is a must! The Indian food served here is simply amazing! I've never had such tasty Indian food from a pub. Turns out the Chef is a Indian native cooking up a storm of amazing authentic dishes. 10/10 would recommend this place.

Stumbled across this place, which was down the road from our holiday accommodation. Popped in for a drink initially, then found out they did a £10, curry and a pint night, so went back for that. Glad we did as it was excellent. Lovely, helpful and attentive staff and the food was excellent. A little bit of a wait, but given we were a party of 8 who all ordered something different off the extensive menu, we didn't mind and it was worth it. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and gave a round of applause the the Chef when he had finished in the kitchen. We would definately recommend and would certainly go back, if we we visited Braunton again.

This is a delightful pub off the main drag of Braunton that serves great Indian food. We visited on a busy Thursday evening. Service was a bit slow but that was probably because the kitchen may have been overwhelmed. The waiting staff and owner were all very attentive and friendly. The starters were great and very generous so make sure you leave room for the main course. The main courses are served in a novel way with the curry served on the dinner plate you'll eat from instead of from a serving bowl. This is a shame as it discourages people to share and taste each others food. Apart from that I would recommend this place if you want a reasonably priced and tasty curry when you are in the area.

Got an Indian takeaway from here, was lovely food but they missed part of the order and whilst I was picking up the order the manager interrupted the staff handing it to me which was rude.

What a great little traditional pub! Always been sceptical of pubs that sell Indian food but it truly is delicious. We visited last week to see family, the staff and locals are a very friendly bunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and drinks.

Excellent friendly staff frequented by many local people as their choice to enjoy real ale and special Indian food. Popular for takeaway which can impact on service for diners.

Went for our third Indian take away since lockdown started all of which have been just amazing. Parking can be a bit of a challenge so if you have to drive allow extra time and if your early take the opportunity to try one of their real ales or walk of course which is what we do.

Excellent service from a small, attentive team even when the place was really busy. Food is is outstanding although be warned, it is a little spicy by English standards! Even the korma we ordered for the kids was a bit warm! Thoroughly recommended

Honest rating, ordered food, got given a time slot, arrived to be told they moved my timeslot 30 mins which was fine, went back in 30 mins but still had to wait a further 30 mins. Got back home to find half the order was not forfilled, rang them and they agreed to bring the missing items plus some free starters, when they eventually arrived all they actually provided was the free starters and not the missing dishes, at this point I just gave up as I was too embarrassed to call again.

Friendly atmosphere, very welcoming

Nice Traditional Pub with a friendly welcome. No longer serves food ad-hoc but will provide with advance notice. Old favourite ales on tap Doom Bar and a guest ale and the Landlords favourite Bank's Mild. Well worth a visit.

Just had a brilliant night at the Quiz that is held there every Wednesday night. We went early and had a lovely meal beforehand. Also the manager Neil who we found out was from our neck of the woods in Birmingham made the night great. His friendly nature combined with the regulars who were in there really made us welcome, even when we actually won the quiz. All in all it was a really good night. Will definitely go there again. We visited The Black Horse on the 24th August. It's a lovely little pub with very welcoming owners. The menu is traditional pub grub which is very reasonably priced. The four of us all finished our food and thoroughly enjoyed it. The burger's and lasagna were tasty with good quality meat! We will definitely be back. Thank you.

The only real "locals" pub in the village. It's small but the place is warm in winter and there are good beers on tap.

Over the years this pub has been up and down. I've just spent two weeks in Braunton. The relatively new land lord and lady have got it buzzing. Good food and great beer. Where else could you get a perfect pint of Bank's mild in Devon? Don't miss it. Its the best local in town
