Lovely friendly staff, and welcoming for dogs. Been to this pub a few times of the last 30yrs, also stayed here. Very welcoming. However, on this occassion, with constructed criticism here-The meals on this particular day, at the high cost charged, with poor portions delivered. I ordered fish, chips and peas, and I'm sorry to say this, where was the homemade chips? as I got frozen deep fried, and I left them. There was just a tablespoon of mushy peas on the plate , fish was beautiful. Hubby had the steak pie and he gives it 7/10, as the pastry was hard and minimal gravy and dried out peas. I was going to speak to your member of staff, but, she had several waiting, and some leaving, and she avoided me. Wed, 28th Oct, lunch time. Hope to come here again, and I hope the food will be better next time. Thank you

Great menu and food was fantastic, real home cooked feel and very tasty. I had the Innkeepers Pie and my wife had the roast pork sandwich, good portion sizes, really good quality. Massive menu to choose from and nice dining area / restaurant side away from the main bar. Service let this place down, all OK until after the meal!! No checking during the meal, if we wanted any more drinks etc eg chance to make some more money!? Waited long time after meal, no one cleared plates away or asked if we wanted more drinks or desserts or the bill. Staff walked past several times delivering meals and drinks to other tables, saw our empty / finished plates but never came near us. This was at least half an hour or more from the main courses being finished. Ended up putting our coats on and paying at the bar- no tip for the service unfortunately. Great pub and amazing food, must have been short staffed as the service was poor. Would still return for the food as it was superb and hope the staff are better on the next visit. Great food, poor service improvements to be made. Well done kitchen staff and please take note serving staff.

This pub is beautiful, quirky and lovely. However massively let down by the owner Amanda. She is rude, un helpful and moody. She cannot run a pub to save her life The staff she employs are brilliant and will make up for her falls backs and flaws. She’s lucky to have them.

Came here for some dinner, we could not have found a better place!! There was a small wait on food (I think due to an illness of staff) but wow the food definitely made up for it! It was absolutely gorgeous. A warm and inviting country pub with a homely atmosphere. Would recommend the sauvignon blanc! Will definitely be coming back and would recommend everyone to come here!

Came here for dinner, wasn’t overly busy. Drinks service was really good. Food service was very slow. Took over an hour for food to come and it felt some people were being served quicker than others. We asked to upgrade the chips on our meal, this came out wrong (it was resolved). We also ordered some sauce which never came! We weren't in a rush but ended up eating after 8pm which he didn’t expect! Won’t be returning.

We chose the Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn because it had the most gluten free options we could find. Our son has celiacs and never really gets a choice if we eat out. When we walked in we immediately found a table even though there were enough people already eating. Atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. We all ordered something different from the menu. Each plate looked and tasted amazing. Proper home cooked food at a reasonable price. Than hand pull beers were good and there was plenty of choice. What a find. Would highly recommend.

A group of us came for our evening meal and unanimously enjoyed our food which was great value for money. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. We came back later in the evening for drinks and the bar was really busy but the young man behind the bar remained calm and friendly and served everyone as quickly as he could. There was a group of musicians playing in one corner, which was a real bonus and gave the pub a great atmosphere. But the stand out was our waitress, Mandy, who served us again later on and really went above and beyond! I hope the management appreciate her because she really is worth her weight in gold!

Booked a table on a sunday and so glad I did, as on the day there were fully booked. Staff were nice and friendly and directed us to our table. Inside its a walkers pub so practical floors and seating due to potential of muddy boots etc but thats fine with me.I ordered the suet pudding and it was delicious. If I could offer one improvement it would be the lighting which was very bright and stark so prevented it from feeling more cosy. Overall though would definitely recommend this place.

Normally when I’m up in the Peaks I’d have at least one meal here, sometimes 3 or 4 and even the odd afternoon pint when passing. I walked up to the pub just for a couple of beers and to check it out for an evening meal and came across the sign board outside. I know pubs and restaurants have to do there thing but when there are other pubs in walking or a short drive distance away where you feel (normal) and relaxed I know where I’d take my money. Sorry but your sign totally put me off.

I booked a table for lunch here to coincide with a walk I was doing in the Peak District and I was not disappointed! The service upon walking in was fantastic and there were plenty of facilities for sanitising etc. in these covid times. We were placed on a small table in a corner which was very cosy and it appeared that the pub was following social distancing guidelines well as the tables next to us were a comfortable distance away. The food is classic British pub food that goes down a treat after a long slog in the Peaks, it's even better with a pint of ale from one of the local breweries! The all round experience was great and I will definitely visit again in the future!

Cosy pub with very friendly staff. The food on offer was for example, scampi and chips, fish and chips burger and chips, sausage and mash. Most items came with “chunky chips”.There was much not on offer, in the way of home-made food. It would have been nice to see a nice home-made pie, chilli etc on the menu, Given the name of the pub some food with Cheshire cheese?I got the feeling most of it was bought in from a catering supplier. We opted for tempura prawns as a starter but in truth they were no different to the ones you get in Tesco’s at Christmas and clearly bought in.Don’t get me wrong the food was “okay” but if you’re looking for something a bit more Gastro/homemade this isn’t the place. My rating of average is based on the quality of food that we had and watched being served to other people.

We went for a long walk in the peaks and ended in Castleton, we had heard the name “Ye olde Cheshire cheese” on a walking website and it had been recommended. I would go to this pub for drinks only in the future, large selection of ales and I also had a fruit cider and they put fresh berries in the glass which was nice. I ordered a pizza and it was very average if not worse. Base was hard, sauce was tomato purée watered down and it was so thick with cheese, I only ate some of it because I was so hungry. My husband had a chicken and bacon sandwich, it was just that, no sauce, very dry. It had an ok salad on the side but overall very poor standard food. The pub is very old and I liked the history and the names of all the past inn keepers on the beams is a very nice touch, but I think popping in for a drink is all I would do and would definitely avoid the food. Also the bar man was very loud, sweared a lot e.g one man came in and asked to be served and he was told it’s table service, he said he was sat outside and the bar man said someone would be out soon, about 15 minutes later he went outside and the man had gone, the bar man came back in loudly swearing about the customer leaving so everyone in the bar knew. We were also sat near the kitchen and the waitress kept talking so loudly with the staff in the kitchen we could all hear every word. It wasn’t too bad for me but I wouldn’t take kids in or expect great customer service. I think this pub needs to keep its historic charm but update it’s food offerings and customer service. Also the toilets have carpet in and really need an overhaul. When we left we past a lot of pubs which looked better and had lovely beer gardens which would go to instead next time.

Having pre-booked, we were directed to our table (it had our name on it). There was a blackboard behind our table, with a menu on it. The waiter arrived and said are you ready to order, we asked for a few more minutes. He came back, and we ordered. I asked him if the pies were puff pastry, when he said they were, I ordered Hunters Chicken.During our meal, we noticed another table had the pie (with short crust pastry), and a Chicken Burger that was not on the blackboard that we ordered from. Upon paying, I went to the bar and saw another menu obscured from our view by an open door. It stated 'take a photo of the menu, table service is in operation, the waiter will take your order'. But until we paid, this menu was not visible to us. On the way out, we noticed this same notice on the outside of the pub, but as we had a table booked we went straight to our table (as directed). The waiter didn't ask if we'd seen the menu, and he stated that the pies were puff pastry when they were in fact short crust. My wife and daughter had scampi, I ordered the hunters chicken. The food arrived in an average time, and was hot, staff were courteous. But, it was all quite average. Nothing wrong with our food, but it was just very average. It was a very hot day, and the pub was very stuffy.

Free parking available opposite the pub (we missed this originally). In the same way others have noted in their reviews, the room was very cold on entering but was soon remedied by turning up the radiator. Comfortable bed with nice bed linen. A stained towel was replaced without any fuss. Tray for muddy boots was a good idea! Our room (10) was situated at the back of the pub on the ground floor - very quiet. Had dinner in the pub that night - can recommend the Innkeepers plate pie - large portions, very tasty food. Good range of beers on tap. Took a friend to Castleton and parked in the Cheshire Cheese car park. Went in and ordered coffee each. Whilst having the coffee we decided to look at the menu. This is comprehensive and something available for all tastes. We had our orders taken at the table and advised to move to a larger table to ensure sufficient space for the plates. We waited and saw other meals being taken out. All looked extremely nice and when our meals arrived they were well worth the wait. A check for satisfaction was made towards the middle of the meal. My friend was full having eaten sone of his rib eye steak. He put his plate to one side and was asked if he would like a doggy bag for the rest of his meal. This offer was declined but highly appreciated. The steak was cooked fully as requested well done and the scampi dinner was excellent. More peas and chips than I could manage. The side salad was beautifully fresh, tasty and crisp. We were asked if we required any desserts but had to decline as we were so full.

The Cheshire Cheese is a favourite haunt of mine in Castleton, although I usually just have a pint or two or their excellent, locally-brewed, real ale before getting the bus back to Sheffield. However. I had the opportunity to sample the food on this occasion and am happy to say that it was excellent. Plus the staff were warm and friendly as well. Have visited the Cheshire Cheese times in the past, and will undoubtedly do so many times in the future.

There are no table reservations in the bar, but we had booked in the restaurant side. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The menu has plenty of standards, including burgers, veggie chilli, fish and chips, pizzas along with poached salmon or Hunters' Chicken. The food was enjoyable, with the simplest being the most successful. The prices are very reasonable, with most bunched around £10/£11. The Barnsley bitter was well kept and very enjoyable.

Just popped in for a drink but decided to have lunch and more than happy we did.there was a small hiccup which was possibly my fault but was sorted out in jig time.i ordered garden peas instead of mushy and got garden as a side dish as well as the mushy.the pie was served with gravy which I never knew was the norm and didn’t want,so my fault there, but the waitress sorted it all out immediately and without fuss,so full brownie points for her.all in all,a really friendly place to eat and drink.would well recommend it.

Stayed in Castleton for four days and used thus pub twice. Great beer, food and service. In addition, the place looks great from the outside with hanging baskets etc. Everything good here and would highly recommend.

My husband, daughter, dog and I have just visited the pub for a meal after completing one of the many walks around Castleton. The food was of a very high standard & plenty. They even catered for the dog, 2 sausages to keep him quiet. I would definitely recommend this pub if you visit Castleton.

Lovely dog friendly pub. wasn't too busy around tea time. There seemed a good food selection to choose from and we had a Ploughmans and a Cheese and Bacon Salad. We also had a side order of chips. The food was really nice and plentiful. We both had upset stomachs that night and as put it down to either the salad leaves that both meals came with or the chips which were slightly on the "fatty" side. I thought hard about writing this review but thought I'd share it if anyone else has the same issue after eating there

Our group of 6 hikers were made to feel very welcome during our 3 nights stay. The staff are friendly and were always helpful such as early access to some rooms, early departure for one of us and running bar tabs etc.

Stayed here for 2 nights in June 2019. Absolutely fantastic village pub / hotel with loads of history. Free parking across the road. Staff were really friendly and welcoming, especially Amanda the manager and Jane who looked after us so well at breakfast time. (The breakfasts are fantastic). The room was comfortable and adequate for our stay. The bed was very good.

Not a good experience. Went in to the Pub for a drink and some food with two friends. Found a table, ordered drinks, got menus. Had a chat, decided on food, friend went to bar to get more drinks and order food. Friend came back pretty annoyed, by all accounts the bar lady advised in a terse and unwelcoming manner that they were not taking food orders for 20 minutes as a large order had just gone out. What does that mean what effect does that have on our food order.

We popped in to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for dinner after a long drive to the Peak District, but it was quite late and they'd stopped serving food. Nonetheless, we chose to stay for the quiz and joined teams with some friendly locals, which was really good fun! The landlady even made us some food as we were staying for the quiz, which was so nice. Their kindness and hospitality really made our night, and it was such a lovely atmospheric place to spend an evening ❤️

We were drenched after getting caught in the showers. We were greeted warmly and served quickly. We both ordered pie and chips and were served a hearty portion, on very hot plates. The pie was delicious with lots of meat in the filling. The staff are warm and we felt genuinely welcomed. We were given a free crunchie bar each after I mistakenly tried to purchase the bar mans lunch! These items were not for sale but the bar staff took pity on me. Made my day. We will defintiely be back very soon

After a walk in the pelting rain this place was the best antidote - a friendly welcome, wonderfully tasty food (the Innkeeper's Pie was just the best home-cooked food I've had in ages), and a fabulous beer in Bradfield Brewery's Brown Cow (other beers were available!) Will definitely want to come here again!

A reasonable pub with accommodation. Dinner menu standard pub grub, but well done. Good selection of real ales. Very good breakfast with a friendly cheerful server. Stayed three nights, and can only talk about room 7. A lovely room, but the location was poor. Right on the street, with only one window it was a dark room, and the traffic noise was intrusive. There was also noise from bins going out and beer coming in. It was a bit on the expensive side for what it was. Best avoided if you want a peaceful stay.

In Castleton for a few days walking and called in at this pub for an early evening meal and a couple of beers. Although not busy when I arrived most tables were reserved but staff managed to find me one . All staff very friendly and helpful, as a solo traveller much appreciated . Had a very tasty burger with added stilton cheese , and a couple of pints of an excellent Black Sheep bitter . Well recommended , but very popular so best to reserve a table . Will be back next time in Castleton .

Great old, historical hotel, in the perfect location. Our room had views over the park gardens too. Staff are friendly & hard working. Great breakfast in the mornings. Perfect for the opera house if you're visiting for a show or just exploring the peaks. Some parking available- £6 for 24 hrs, obtain ticket from hotel. We'll definitely be back, many thanks !

set on a quiet and scenic road not far from the centre of hope, you'll be met by friendly staff and i have to admit my black pudding in chicken, new potatoes, cabbage and sauce melted, throw in a decent choice of starters and desserts not to mention a good choice of alcoholic beverages and your in for a nice dining experience.
