Xich Lo in Havering

An authentic vietnamese cafe in the heart of Hornchurch! No frills, but the food is fantastic and the staff are so friendly and enthusiastic and very welcoming. It offers a refreshingly simple dining experience with dishes that are healthy, beautifully presented and very very tasty. If you fancy something a little different that will tickle the taste buds and give you something to talk about, then I would definitely recommend it. We really enjoyed it and we will definitely come again. 😀

A different experience, never had Vietnamese food before but really enjoyed it. There were 5 of us, 1 vegan, 1 vegetarian, 1 ceoliac ( gluten allergy ) and the extremely helpful staff member explained everything on the menu to us and helped us choose what to eat and drink. Everyone was delighted with what they had to eat and drink and it was all very tasty. The portions were large so some of us couldn't eat it all on the night so they provided take away containers for what we couldn't eat. The whole evening was a pleasure and the friendly, helpful staff added to that greatly.

Really enjoyed our evening of good quality, healthy delicious food. The desserts are 5 stars!! Staff were very helpful and friendly, well worth a visit.

This restaurant reopened last night after a refurbishment. The food was top notch and really delicious and fresh. Also reasonably priced Really recommend. There were three of us and for starters we had spring rolls, summer rolls and chicken skewers. For mains we had Vietnamese curry, beef pho and bun thit nuong

This is a lovely family run restaurant. It is rustic and basic, but the service is good and really friendly. It serves good wholesome honest and authentic food at a reasonable price and it looks and tastes great! They do great bubble teas too and their coffees are really good. They don’t serve alcohol though, but I think you can bring your own.

This restaurant is a family run business. It is quite simple and there is not enough staff to provide a great service, at least not on this Sunday, may be different during the week! So why did I give it 5 stars? Well what can I say, the food was so authentic and nicely presented, it was colourful, tasty and healthy too. The drip coffee was really tasty too. The waiter was very nice, and always had a smile on his face and to be honest I really enjoyed the whole experience. I will definitely visit again.

The sandwich was delicious. Will highly recommend it. The prawns were flavoursome and succulent topped with fresh coriander and chillies, yummy

This is a fantastic restaurant in the middle of the nightlife of Hornchurch. Great and different food plus you can bring your own drink! What's not to like? It should be packed but it's only a quarter full. Come on Hornchurch people give it a try. All diets catered for (great vegan food) and it's so inexpensive. If you like quality, this special restaurant is a must, a little Vietnamese oasis amid the chain restaurants and overpriced eating troughs of Hornchurch Town centre.

First time visited and was absolutely delicious. Bao buns were great. Great vegan options and the set menus are excellent value. Would highly recommend! Owner was also lovely.

We have been visiting this place for around 5 years and the food never disappoints. Consistently fresh and fill of fresh ingredients. The menu is changed regularly and I am always willing to try something new. Current the boa buns are great, the next big question is crispy pork or crispy duck.

Had a wonderful evening and meal at Xich Lo, great three courses and allowed to bring our own wine. I would recommend that you give this place a try. I am really looking forward to when they bring back their taster evenings again.

I don’t usually leave review on trip advisor but I felt so bad about takeaway I had. ordered baguette with 5.90£ and so disappointed that bread was cheap one and soggy, filling was not enough with hair inside. really disappointed, never will visit there again.

Food ok a little cold though, table sticky! Didn’t any cleaning between guests, no track and trace in place, won’t be going back

It was good to support another local restaurant today with a long overdue return to Xichlo for some fabulous Vietnamese food. Xichlo is a lovely friendly little cafe in the heart of Hornchurch town centre. We decided to visit on sunday and received a nice friendly welcome on arrival before being seated. We then looked at the menu to see they serve a nice variety of Vietnamese cuisine from starters , salads , baguettes , noodles , rice , curry & soups. We decided to order as we went along and started with the Taster Starter Meat Platter of grilled pork summer rolls , pork & prawn spring roll & chicken skewers accompanied by three dipping sauces. Each item was delicious and a great way to start. At this time we also ordered a Jasmine Tea and an Apple Bubble Tea which I absolutely loved. We then looked at the menu again and ordered a Crispy Pork Vietnamese Baguette along with a Chicken Green Papaya Salad and some spicy prawn crackers. We were then nicely offered a complimentary coffee so I had an Iced Coffee which was an absolute delight and a Vietnamese Filter Coffee. We next moved on to our main course where we chose a Chicken & Prawn Vietnamese Curry with sweet potatoes , lemongrass & coconut milk. Our other choice was the Pho Tai a Vietnamese Noodle Soup with thinly sliced rare beef steaks , clear rice noodles , fresh herbs and flavoured with a beef broth. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. As they don't serve desserts this rounded off a fabulous lunch. Next time your in town I would highly recommend a visit for either a quick snack or a nice lunch. The food here is amazing with every dish bursting with fantastic Vietnamese flavours and spices. I for one won't be leaving it to long before I return.

This was my first time at this restaurant. Staff were friendly and restaurant was clean. It was not very busy for a Saturday evening. We ordered the meat sharing platter to start with, which was nice, even though the spring rolls were hard and very hot filling in the middle, the chicken on the platter was very dry and rubbery.I then had the chicken curry, which was ok, the curry was very hot, but the rice was warm, not sure about the sweet potato in the chicken curry and it could have done with more mushrooms. Good portion sizes, but as the restaurant was quiet the bing from the microwave is not a good sound, as I guess this how they warm up the food, so not freshly cooked.

We were looking forward to out first Vietnamese meal. Ultimately, came out feeling like we were served something a POW from the war would have claimed went against the Geneva Convention.The excellent Sukothai across the road was not open so we thought to get a fix from a Vietnamese meal. Afterall, how truly different can they be? Well, the answer is light years apart. We went to order and had a vegetable curry and trying a vegetable noodles and vegetable spring rolls.The spring roll was hot and really stood out as being the only dish that was. Other than that, barely any filling and served with a rice vinegar as a dipping sauce (which I will overlook as may be the tradition).The noodles in the curry were luke warm (perhaps they weren't microwaved for long enough!) as was the actual vegetable curry. This was an abomination of a thing, something like a love child between a value brand curry sauce and some sweet potatoes, very dry tofu (possibly deep fried and like 5 day old bread chunks) with two (yes 2) button mushrooms, 2 slices of red pepper and two little chunks of onion making up the vegetable part. Additionally there was not enough curry for the noodles which on hindsight was no bad thing as it was barely warm, completely tasteless (unless the colour yellow has a taste) and probably abused my human rights.The vegetable noodles were again under microwaved, came with the same 5 day old bread pieces passed off as Tofu and a salad on the side which to it's credit was fresh.The waitress was apologetic and offered to give me more curry sauce which I foolishly accepted as ultimately I didn't bother eating it as it didn't really address the actual issue of being barely warm, tasteless and almost devoid of actual vegetables.We were sorely disappointed and would never return and highly recommend that no one else throws good money away which is what you will do if you order there. On the subject of money, value was very poor as the portions were not generous at all. Even if we had eaten everything, we would have come out hungry and the prices of almost £8 for the curry was double what it should have been bearing in mind the portion size, even if it had been edible.If you feel I have been unduly harsh, feel free to check out my other reviews for balance.

We went to the taster evening last night. The food was delicious, lovely flavour, service was great, the host was really welcoming. I would suggest maybe some music to create more ambience, but it was still a perfect evening. Thank you Xich Lo

Been to this restaurant a few times however the first time we attended the tasting evening. Food was amazing. Nice to sample food not usually in the menu. Great price at £20 each. Didn’t bring alcohol but would do next time. Husband and son both had apple bubble tea.

I went to this lovely little restaurant today. The food and service were excellent. The man serving was just so lovely and happy. Had a fabulous prawn curry and a grape bubble tea. I’m definitely going back to try the evening tasting menu. You can even take your own wine and a bargain at £20. Highly recommended.

Nice vietnamese flavours rekindle my memories of vietnam travel. Nice little restaurant, good food, lovely staff. Atmosphere is a bit lacking though and would be 100% better if there was some nice claming background vietnamese music.

We visited this Vietnamese restaurant on Saturday. Lovely food, fantastic drip coffee with great customer service in a clean environment. We had spring rolls, summer rolls, curry and noodles. It was all very nice. I need to book one of their taster nights next!

We waited for an hour for our soup which consisted beef, broth and noodles (we ordered the special 3 beef noodles but was presented with one type of beef). And rice with chicken on a plate. Simple as it sounds. Worst service and meal ever. No real apologies or consideration. Very disappointing.

Full Gluten Free cafe with a small selection on offer. Food is cooked to order, and was very tasty. Prices very reasonable

I am occasionally in Hornchurch and always stop here for some of their wonderful food. The noodles are perfect, the salads fresh and crisp and the meats almost perfectly cooked, particularly the crispy pork. Try the summer rolls for something a little different, and the lemon tea served hot with ginger is amazingly tasty and refreshing. Do yourself a favour and try this if you're in town.

Visited Saturday as a family and had the three course taster menu which they produce with special items that are not on the menu.

Great food, awesome staff, it's a pleasure to eat here. We always feel welcomed, the noodles are delicious, the ingredients taste really fresh and it's great value for money. Oh, and please try the coffee!

I have been here many times, and every time the food has been delicious. Cooked almost in front of you, it's fresh and flavoursome. Their coffee is to die for.

My wife at a whim decided to stop here for bubble tea, and had the mango , whilst its no my ''cup of tea'' , she loved it.

I popped in with my partner for lunch at the weekend. The place was very quiet but before we went in I checked the reviews on trip advisor and they were all very good.

I know everyone has an opinion and all opinions are relative to the individual but I honestly can't see how anyone can say this place is terrible.

I pop in two to three times a week, my favourite is the pork soup, it comes with noodles, Vietnamese herbs and spices (separately in an salad) prawns, quails egg and slices of specially cooked pork. I have been eating this on a weekly basis for over a year and I am still not bored of it. The staff are so helpful and friendly and the coffee puts Starbucks, Costa and the other to shame big time. 10/10 on everything!

I came in for lunch today with my partner and was greeted by a young boy and girl, they were very welcoming and made the restraunt atmosphere a lot happier. The food was cooked very fast and tasted delicious! Would definitely recommend to friends/family!

I came in yesterday for lunch with a couple of friends. We got served by a young boy who threw menus at us and didn’t even give a welcoming service. He looked uninterested and didn’t make the restaurant reach the potential. Understandable people have bad days but you should put it aside whilst at work. And atleast attempt to make it enjoyable for paying customers!! I’ve been in previously and had amazing food, amazing service over heard 2 female staff members having a laugh which made the atmosphere great and kept their service up, yesterday was just a let down.

The staff are very friendly and very helpful. The Vietnamese food is wonderful and the service is brilliant. Good prices, delicious drip coffee with no hustle and bustle of some coffee shops that are very cramped and noisy. I come here as often as I can and always recommend it to everyone I meet.

What a terrible experience. Front of house staff had no personality. Starter and main brought out together. Food served on cold plates. Beansprouts so cold they must have come straight out of the freezer. Pho very bland. Prawn curry tasted like a chip shop curry sauce. When we mentioned a couple of these items we were told "Well this is a cafe not a restaurant". I will never return here.

The staff were really friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, served quickly. Very well proced too. Will definitely be going there again!

The restaurant was virtually empty when we arrived with three tables of diners; a guy on his own, a party of four and a mother and baby. The table of four were complaining about the lack of service, no napkins and that the waitress kept vanishing, the mother and child left and didn't look too happy either.

I love this place. One of very few places in Hornchurch which actually offers authentic, freshly made and delicious food. The decor is original, and staff always make you feel welcome. A small thing, but I do feel some background music would be nice.

I'd only intended popping in for a coffee out of curiosity, but ended up ordering a 'Grab & Go' box and ate in. Couldn't fault the food at all, it was really well cooked. I had the grilled pork and noodles. Definitely order the Vietnamese spring rolls as they are really good. Nice décor inside too, but quite warm. I'd visit again for sure.

Never tried Vietnamese food before, so visited Xich Lo for lunch. Wonderful fresh food, crispy pork was the best. Lovely attentive staff who explained the different dishes on the menu. We tried the drip coffee, gorgeous. We will be coming back for more.

The food here was very good and very reasonably priced. It is much for of a lunch time venue that for dinner.

My colleagues came into work with crispy pork baguettes from here and from just the smell... I had to try one. I went in, the service was efficient and friendly and the baguette was everything I'd hoped for... phenomenal. Also got 10% off for having it take away, bonus! Keep up the good work, I can't wait to come back!

First time that I had visited this restaurant and went on a Saturday evening. This is really a daytime restaurant as it closes at 9pm and when we started our meal at 8pm there was no one else in the restaurant. Sat outside and nice to have choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Really friendly staff and the sharing platter excellent. For mains had the prawns and rice and all very fresh and tasty. Had the set menu for two and very reasonable. I would imagine more atmosphere during the day when busy.

Reading the positive reviews i thought we were in for a treat to find an authentic vietnamese restaurant in closeby Hornchurch and I truly wonder if the previous reviews have really visited an authentic vietnamese restuarant or went somewhere else?

I love taking the kids for a quick lunch at Xich Lo, the soups are wonderfully filling and full of noodle, vegetable and chicken goodness. Kids love it!

Have written previous review on Xich Lo...this one was just to say I had the chicken curry the other day which is a new addition to the menu, and I wanted to say it was fabulous, tasty and good portion size too. Keep up the good work guys.

I Went hear on the 1st March with my toddler, I ordered a light snack, which was the summer and spring rolls, absolutely delicious! My son devoured the summer rolls! The two gentlemen staff where friendly and helpful. Will definitely be coming back to try some more of their dishes. Oh and the coffee is very nice too!

Looking for an independent coffee shop on our day-trip to Hornchurch we came upon this unpretentious but very friendly cafe / restaurant and thought that we would give it a go. We were delighted: the vegetarian spring rolls were light and tasty and the Pho beautiful substantial but light and full of natural flavours, both the vegetarian and the beef versions. The coffee was good as well. Such excellent value - the folk of Hornchurch are very, very lucky.

This is a quiet place, with a relaxed atmosphere. The food is sensational. I had the Xich Lo mixed noodles, which are superb. They make their own spring rolls which are delicious! Worth every penny!

We love it here as it brings back tastes of Vietnam. Rustic inside and initially the staff hadn't quite got the service right as it was really slow and not a good atmosphere but they were happy to take on board comments from customers and now it is perfect. They put little tasters of their menu on Facebook and respond to any queries. The good is absolutely fab and the dripping coffee a must.

Popped in for a warm drink on a cold day. Tea was lovely, and my other half tried the drip coffee, which he said was really nice. Such friendly people, took the time to explain the coffee, and introduced us to the new menu that is about to be launched. We will definitely be back - support small businesses

So there we are getting last minute shopping in readiness for a trip and I get starving Marvin and was in need of a warm drink. Just for a change i fancied something different from the 5 or so Costa Starbucks Neros sort of offerings. In we ventured to start this small cafes offerings.

I noticed this coffee shop last year, and although I thought it looked nice from the exterior, never visited as I was unsure about Vietnamese cuisine.

Lovely service, beautiful food! Portion sizes are generous and it's not too expensive. I'd recommend for somewhere different to eat.

Never tried Viet food before and I'm so glad we ate here. Beautiful and interesting decor, fantastic fresh food, friendly and informative service and the loo was spotless. We started with Spring & Summer rolls - hot and cold - delicious - followed by chicken and noodles. Again, very tasty. I was envious of our neighbour's pho dish which I'll definitely try next time. A thoroughly enjoyable experience and one I can't wait to try again. The coffee with condensed milk sounded a bit strange but was superb. I wanted more.

Really enjoyed our lunch and coffee at Xich Lo. We spent some time travelling in Vietnam earlier this year and were really happy to taste some authentic cuisine in the UK, and we just love Vietnamese coffee so it really hit the spot.

Popped in here with my partner as we could smell it from around the corner. Lovely quirky decor with an amazing bathroom sink! Ended up spending £50 for lunch as we couldn't stop ordering all the wonderful options on the menu. A lot of people were in and out getting takeaway lunches. So fresh so healthy and the staff explain all the different dishes and have a good old chat.

My daughter and I visited this restaurant for the first time and will definitely be returning. We shared a pork noodle dish which was fresh tasting and full of flavour. We had the coffee which was delicious. Can't wait to go back.

Have been meaning to try this place for a while and finally got the chance this evening. The food was fantastic, you could taste how fresh all the ingredients were, and everyone really enjoyed their meals.

The food is so tasty and rich. Service is fast and great. Menu not huge but there's something for everybody.

Visited with family for the first time. Upon arrival we were greeted by a member of staff and sat down. The menu was explained to us and we proceeded to order. The summer rolls were nice and the mains we ordered good too.

We were welcomed in with friendliness and warmth. We were delighted to have the whole concept of Vietnamese Cuisine explained and quickly made a choice from a small but interesting menu. Being very familiar with street food in Thailand on many visits we awaited the arrival of the food with interest. We were not disappointed - it was delicious. Different from Thai, although similar, we immediately knew we were onto a winner.

Coffee is delicious, full flavoured and rich. Food was fresh, tasty and at a decent price. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and gave free samples of food to our little girl, which was very kind. Well worth a visit, immeasurably better than the coffee chains dotted all over the town.

I have now used this café on three occasions for lunch. it has been outstanding on every occasion the staff are friendly, approachable and accommodating. And the food is amazing! Whilst I haven't eaten in yet I do fully intend to as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Walked past many times without going in as it doesn't look very appealing from outside. My mistake ! The food is sensational, no other word for it. Can't recommend the spring rolls enough. Mind you, the summer rolls are great as well. My wife had a soup and loved it, while the noodles, vegetables and seasoned chicken breast were lovely. Not greasy, clearly homemade food and full of fresh vegetables. Nice authentic music in the background as well. It's a bit odd that you need to go to the counter to order (and that should be made clearer) but I'll know for next time. Perhaps leave the menus on the table permanently and have it written at the top of the menu. The food was so good I've promised to take as many people as possible there over the summer. Prices are very reasonable and will definitely be going again....and again !!

I think I have been to Xich Lo about 8 times since it opened this year. I love this place. The food is fresh, and always delicious. I always try and have something different when I come but I think I know what my favourites are already...pretty much the whole menu. I still enjoy Chinese food but you certainly notice that this is a lot fresher and healthier, and not greasy. I find the staff always polite and helpful.

We were pleasantly surprised to discover a Vietnamese eatery in Hornchurch. The food was one of the best we've had, especially the summer spring rolls and the green papaya salad - not to mention the delicious coffee! The ambience was aesthetically pleasing and all the staff were genuinely friendly. They were also very patient and good-natured about the mess our babies made. We'd love to visit again and highly recommend it to anyone.

I work in the heart of Hornchurch and always find it hard to get something decent for lunch. As I only have 30 minutes to get the food and eat it, charging up the high street and queuing is not an option for me.

Really pleased to see a Vietnamese open up in the area. Food was fresh; healthy and tasty. Prices are reasonable. Nice decor -remember its a cafe not a restaurant but even so it has a nice ambience and very friendly proprietor/ staff members. I will be back -particuarly for take away as its so close by.

The food in this place is not and could never be described as mediocre Its q cafe style eatery so yes that's the style. The food in my honest opinion is superb. Some people are beyond pleasing on trip advisor

Thought we'd give this a try as read good reviews. On entering we sat at a table & observed there is nothing on the tables, no cutlery, glasses etc. Young guy came over & handed us an A4 paper menu & literally whispered hello under his breath (menu is very limited). To order you have to approach the counter. We ordered 2 cokes & was asked if we wanted a glass. The waiter returned with 2 glasses you would serve a cafe latte in! The meal arrived & we was given a plastic folk to eat with! There is no atmosphere whatsoever in the 'restaurant'. There was a woman in her twenties on another table dining alone but on her mobile the whole time we was there so with no music we heard all of her boring conversation. Another young girl was dining alone, she was from Singapore, we know this because the young waiter started a conversation with her that lasted the duration of our dining experience! He had his back constantly to us, not at any stage did he ask if we wanted anything, was the food ok etc. The food we mediocre & we couldn't wait to leave, no way was we staying for a coffee, we would have had to interrupt the waiters conversation if we wanted some anyway! This place won't last 6 months - guaranteed! Avoid, complete waste of time.

Pleased that Vietnamese restaurants are opening in the local area (there is one in Romford) . We have eaten here on several occasions and enjoyed the food immensely. The menu is quite small but what the do is done well. The pho is very good but it would me nice if some of the more traditional offal was included in the beef soup. The banh mi is also well worth trying and is very filling and tasty. Try the traditional dripped coffee both hot or iced.

Never had Vietnamese before but went with friends, one who has been Vietnam before so knew what to order. Was so impressed by the freshness and quality of the food! I had the crispy pork banh mi and prawn summer roll. Can't wait to go back and try other bits of the menu! Don't like coffee but the Vietnamese dripped coffee was really nice with the condensed milk. Ever since my first visit mid February, I have pretty much visited Xich Lo every other week and will continue to do so.

Finally got to try this restaurant last Saturday having watched them turn it in to a restaurant! What lovely food. It was fresh and very tasty. I had the pork with noodles and my husband had the crispy pork with noodles. We both loved it. Afterwards I had a coffee as I wanted to try Vietnamese coffee. It was one of the best coffees I have tasted. I preferred it without the condensed milk. I felt it made it too sweet for me and the coffee was so nice it didn't need milk. I ordered it with milk and then they brought me over a free one to try without the milk which I thought was really lovely of them. The staff are lovely - a family run business and genuinely want to ensure you are happy with your food. All the food is very reasonably priced. I will certainly be going back.

First visit to this newly opend cafe, first impression....the place is spotlessly clean, menu a little on the small side, however I have not visited Vietnam so dont know if this is true of all eateries.

Great little gem of a place. I tried a selection of dishes with my family including spring rolls, baguette special, pork and prawn noodle soup, and rice with grilled pork. Dishes were authentic and well priced. Cosy setting...oh, and Viet coffee is a must !!
