A chaotic and appallingly managed experience at this famous pub well past its sell by date. Our lunchtime starters took an hour to arrive and our main courses over 90 mins. No explanation or apology. We abandoned our table before desert and left some 2 1/2 hours after arriving. Not recommended.

Had a great 3 night stay at the Wykeham Arms - great room, lovely meals (dinner and breakfasts) and looked after by very friendly, efficient staff. Would recommend this for anyone wanting a short break in Winchester, very central location and easy to get around the city on foot. Great selection of drinks in the bar - with some very well kept beers. Thank you to all the staff we met.

Visited today for lunch with friends. I hadn’t been for 5 years. I particularly commend the Chef and kitchen staff for a delicious Beetroot Starter with 3 types of Beetroot, some cooked al dente, others picked and a refreshing sorbet. Front of house staff friendly, helpful and professional.

We had the most wonderful dinner here last night, the mussels in chicken butter were out of this world, the fillet steak cooked to perfection and the lemon cremeux which was vegan was wonderful, I don’t usually have a dessert but that id happily devour many times over 😋 and not to mention the staff who were so accommodating, absolutely lovely and offered some of the best service I’ve had in a while 🙏 all in all a fantastic birthday celebration was had and we can’t wait to return 🤩 oh yes also super dog friendly 🐶

A lovely, memorable meal. The food was superb, we ate every mouthful slowly and happily as it was so delicious. We both had the pig cheek starter but the real highlight was the fillet and short rib. Beautiful steak, fabulous ‘jus’ and other little splashes of taste on the plate that complemented the meal perfectly. We matched the meal with some lovely Rioja and left with full tums and some delicious memories! We will return!

We held our daughter’s wedding reception here in December 2023 and we were over the moon with the amazing and tasty food, welcome and service. The staff went above and beyond to make the occasion a memorable and happy one. There was a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the room and the tables were set perfectly. We had a parking issue and the manager, sorted it for us. I can recommend The Wykeham Arms and Sian particularly for her patience with all our dietary needs and requests.

A very disappointing meal. Over priced for a very small portion of vegetarian pasta! I mentioned how small the portion was to the manager and all he said was he’d tell the chef! We left hungry and paid £70 for 2 with one drink🤦🏼♀️ We shall not return there again it’s a pleasant pub but prices ridiculous and food not worth it. We should have said how unhappy we were with the bill. Really worth no more than £40 tops!!!

An enjoyable 2 night stay between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, the perfect location while spending Christmas with family nearby. We stayed in the superior Post Box room, in the building directly opposite. The steep staircase wouldnt suit everyone, but the room itself was very nice. The staff were all polite, friendly and helpful, at an inevitably busy time on Christmas Eve afternoon when we checked in. The bar area was bustling throughout and friendly. We ate at the restaurant late on Christmas Eve and we both thoroughly enjoyed the chilli prawns (a substitution for the sold out mussels), Wyke pie and crumble, all ofvwhich were excellent. We struggled to understand the negative feedback from some recent reviewers about food quality and portion size. Yes the portions could be slightly bigger, but we were not left hungry. We would have no hesitation in staying and dining here again, on our next trip to Winchester.

Smashing old worldly pub with a wonderful vibe. The food is delicious with a small but varied menu. We both had the fish and chips and agreed it was the best we’d ever had. The puds were also superb - the panna cotta a revelation! Loved everything about this pub - plus the quirky toilets!

We live in london- wimbledon. Our local pub serves excellent sandwiches Here we ordered a beef sandwich with chips and it was £15. Wouldn’t have minded if there had been a choice of bread (white only it seems or if there was a choice nobody asked) Doorsteps of stale bread with 2 pieces of beef and a lot of grainy mustard. Chips were OK. I did complain and they said “maybe the chef toasted it” Really? On both sides? Very poor value. The pub itself is very quaint and was surprisingly busy.

I have always loved the Wykeham Arms as a pub and it's always my first choice when taking associates out to dinner in Winchester. The walk through the cathedral to the pub sets the tone beautifully, leaving your guests feeling like they are in "proper" England, being treated to a very special experience. Upon entering the pub you are met by a lovely old bar, gentle hater and an eclectic mix of historic pictures and artefacts on the walls that stimulate conversation. I have eaten at the Wykeham Arms on many occasions over the years and have always felt that it delivers great food and very efficient, friendly service. That was until my recent visit where the service let down the whole experience and has prompted me to write this review. Once seated we were handed menus and left to browse before the waitress returned to take our drinks order. After 10 minutes I could see that my associates (from overseas) were getting thirsty and probably starting to wonder if this was the normal kind of service to expect, so I went to find a member of staff to see if we had been forgotten. The maitre d' eventually appeared from the kitchen to ask if i was ok? When I politely enquired as to when our drinks would arrive I was told, somewhat aggressively, that "this isn't the kind of establishment where drinks come out quickly, you need to relax and wait at your table". Not a great start to the evening. The drinks were eventually brought out and served by a rather charming waitress who then took our food order, by which time we were all rather peckish and looking forward to some good food. The food came and was fine but sadly not as memorable as previous visits. We decided to have a dessert but after 15 minutes of waiting for some icecream we were regretting our decision. I must stress that this was on a Thursday evening and the place was not busy. Would I return to the Wykeham Arms - Yes, but probably not with work associates as the attentiveness and speed of service is way off the pace. Fine if you're after a long, boozy lunch!

This is a lovely old pub tucked away behind the cathedral walls. Not quite the welcome of the previous charismatic publican, but that is a hard act to follow. We had the fish and chips cooked in a crispy batter which we shared and I enjoyed along with a couple of puddings, both delightful. But for all that it was pricey and surprisingly empty. I'm told that all changes at the weekends when they are full. Still worth as visit if only for the decor of the walls which are stuffed with interesting things.

Stayed for three nights and it was fantastic. Room was really spacious and lovely, ours was up two flights of step stairs if u have mobility issues ask for a ground floor room. Tiny little fridge on the wall, enough for water, milk and a bottle of wine. Bed was very comfy and a massive walk in shower in the bathroom. Location is perfect very close to the city area about a five minute walk. Breakfast was also fantastic, such a selection, as is the complimentary goodies in your room. Parking on site for all rooms. Wish all our UK accommodation was up to this standard. Well done to a great team.

My husband booked for a two night stay at the beginning of May for my birthday. We stayed in the Postbox room which was lovely and is across the street from the actual pub so was nice and quiet. The staff were very attentive and it was super busy due to the bank holiday weekend. The room was clean with tea, coffee and fresh milk (always a bonus for me) and a little fridge with water and a few beers. We had breakfast on the Monday morning which was very nice and a great choice and we ate in the pub on the Monday evening which was lovely. Breakfast on the Tuesday was slightly disappointing for me as they had run out of smoked salmon and muffins as I wanted to try the Eggs Royale, however what I did have was lovely. Really good value for money. A great location just a short stroll from the cathedral and the main High Street with some lovely river walks on the doorstep too. We would definitely return.

6 people went for lunch, the service was nearly commensurate to the charge. The roast lamb was really good, Generously proportioned but less so if you consider the £22 price per plate. The squash Wellington was a triumph and we will try and recreate this fantastic dish at home, albeit we won’t need to spend £19 on a few veg and pastry. The 3 burgers were £18.50 apiece and the boys were looking forward to what should have been one of the best burgers ever served. Nah didn’t happen. Under seasoned, cold, made worse by the near frozen lettuce and tomato which then proceeded to turn the bottom bun into mush. The bun itself was an unremarkable diminutive thing unworthy of its place on this plate, untoasted, lacking bacon, gherkins, relish or dressing of any kind. I would say it was dry, but it was wet ! Disappointed enough to have written here.

The Wykeham is a lovely pub but the food is very average and very expensive. We were there for Sunday lunch, with the prices ranging from £20 to £27 so at the top end of the scale. The food is, at best, average. If you paid £11.95 for it you wouldn't be unhappy. One of our group had trout which was tiny and cost £24 and an extra £5 for the tiniest portion of fries. The sides of veg for the other roasts were so small it was embarrassing trying to share. It's a real shame because the place has ambience and is the kind of place where you would expect to pay a bit more, but in return you are entitled to expect quality in return.

Visited on spec (good pub guide) and were very impressed. Atmosphere great. While he pub is clearly known for food, it also has retained a significant bar area ao felt like a pub for locals. Great character (and some Winchester eccentrics to boot) Fish specials...

I had the mackerel starter. It was disappointing. Mackerel is a very cheap fish but the portion was tiny. The beef skirt and mash was very good though.

Dropped in here for drinks before moving on for lunch somewhere else. The place was almost empty but did fill up very quickly. There were 4 of us and my companions all had various beers but I wanted a vodka and tonic as I don't...

My husband and I stopped here for drinks. Plenty of space in front part of pub (we could see some tables were reserved), when as we walked in we were then told to ‘stand here’ by a staff member who was very brash in manner....

This was my third visit, and will be my last. I was resident, and took dinner with one bottle of wine. Clearly, a supportive client. I then went to the bar and was refused service by the manageress. I was not intoxicated but wanted a...

We dined here on Friday evening, we really enjoyed the congenial traditional pub atmosphere and some stunning food. We had great, low key service. It was quite pricy - I think a little over the top considering what we had, hence 4 stars.

We went for lunch. There are lots of small interlinked rooms (the ventilation could be better), and we were lucky enough to get a table in an unstuffy room. There seemed to be only 2 waiters for the whole place, but they were so good...

Great location. If you are staying as a resident, they have a small Carpark. Ideal for exploring the Winchester cathedral. It is a very short walk. 3 mins away. The pub with rooms is a old house with very different rooms . The room was...

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
