A beautiful location with great food and service. We sat outside with a fantastic sea view. I had the crab sandwich, unlike a previous reviewer I think it was the best Ive ever had. Enormous and stuffed with extremly tasty crab served with a garnish, my husband had an excellent baked potatoe with prawns. Well cooked and plenty of prawns. Its the 2nd time weve been here and will return when next in this beautiful area.

Enjoyed a rainy afternoon at the Wreckers Retreat as we finished at Welcombe Bay (definitely somewhere to visit) and were looking for somewhere to enjoy a relax and some comforting food. We were apprehensive as we first walked in but quickly relaxed as the staff were super friendly and the food was exactly what we were looking for. Would definitely recommend if you are close by. I would also recommend booking a table. We arrived in the afternoon and got a table straight away but almost all tables were booked from 6pm and some people even turned away!

Nice spot and friendly staff but very disappointing meal - the crab sandwich I'd been looking forward to was made with a jar of crab paste and was not the hand picked white crab I had been dreaming of (wish they'd said on the menu and I'd have ordered something else) and the reheated pasty was a very poor imitation of one we had had the day before from a bakers in Bude.

Unsurprisingly, it was a rainy day, so had walked to The Wreckers for drinks and hopefully some food. The bar still retains its COVID year check-in desk, so politely asked bar man if they had room for five. He said he could sort something out (the bar was less than half full) and advised me about coat hooks in the porch (just the two, the larger coat rack disappeared a few years ago). However, the bar manager had other ideas, gave me a withering look and said "not on my fabric chairs". I have never felt so unwelcome in a pub in Britain. I have spent good money here every summer for 17 years, but never again.

We had a lovely pub dinner in this hotel on the beautiful Hartford Quay. What a spot! The menu has all the usual pub favourites and it’s all freshly cooked and done with real care. We stopped off here for a "pub grub" lunch as we feel compelled to support any establishment that accommodates dog-owning vegans! We had yomped, en famille, from our accommodation at Lovelands Farm across the available footpaths and rights of way, through Stoke, and down to the Quay on a surprisingly bright and sunny October day; arriving just about perfectly for said lunch. We had Rambler's hunger and my wife, and I, convinced ourselves we had "earn't" a pint of St. Austell to boot.We were surprised at the number of cars in the car park and this was reflected in our naivety in expecting there to be loads of free tables. Because of Covid and the prevailing winds they weren't servicing the tables outside [of which there were oodles] and you had to book. Unfortunately we had not!Conversely we were fitted in, post arrival and enquiry, within about ten minutes; conveniently just long enough to wander down to the lookout point, snaps on the phone and return.Covid aware routines were in place and well marshalled. They could not have been more welcoming to both ourselves and the Hounds; they were replete with about five other dog owners at that same time! The beers were well kept and despatched with some gusto by the parents; Tribute for MrsC and Proper Job for me.The lunchtime menu is quite limited but we were thankful that there were Vegan options; especially when you consider the location and accessibility. We were matched in our tastes; the parents both settling on the Vegan Pasty and Chips whilst both girls settled on a basket meal of Vegan Nuggets and chips [The nuggets being voted some of the best they'd had no less].The Hounds were kindly served their own dog treats for [presumably] being on good behaviour; which was a nice touch. The food was simple but filling and the rating reflects these walker's thanks that they remain able to serve and provide during these trying times.Service was warm and effusive throughout and they managed a motley mix of customers [none more so than the vegans with Hounds!!] with aplomb; all within a Covid safe environment and routine.Hope we'll be able to return next Summer to enjoy another round!May need to revisit the Bar name and consider a change to "Walkers Retreat"?

This pub is better than the rating I gave, but we came during Covid and the menu was limited... and no desserts! They take the social distancing rules very seriously here and I felt safe during my visit. I had quiche which was very dry and salad which was undressed. The prices are modest and the setting is amazing - it's worth going just for that. I would like to return here once social distancing is over and really experience the full menu and ambience.

We were staying in the Hartland Quay hotel which includes this bar and restaurant. What a pleasure. Smiling and unmasked young staff well marshalled by the impressive Steve. The food was certainly a couple of notches up from earlier visits several years ago but inevitably the menu was a little restricted on account of social distancing in the kitchen. All orders were taken and served at the socially distanced tables but the overall feeling was of conviviality and friendliness between customers and staff alike.

The food here was okay but nothing special. The social distancing seemed to me to be a bit over the top with the tables so far apart there was no atmosphere. Sort of averagely ok - staff not over friendly - food ok but nothing special - seemed to be all bought in pub grub - pleasant atmosphere in the pub. We ate here early evening after trying for a table 3 times previously - the staff seemed to be very pleased to turn us away telling us that they were fully booked with no attempt to offer us alternative days or times. We assume that they are so busy because its a destination pub - nothing else would seem to be in its favour. We were in the area for 3 weeks & only ate there the one time - much better alternatives were available within 2 or 3 miles.

My husband and I come here once a year when we stay at Stoke Barton Farm just up the hill. I've always thought the pub is a little odd, they are always extremely busy, but staff move like it's very quiet. This year was no different (although obviously very different in other ways post lockdown). There was 1 person serving behind the bar, very slowly, and plenty of other floor staff, again, serving very slowly. Food is just your standard pub grub. The location is obviously amazing, and most likely the main reason we return every year. It's conviently within walking distance of our little campsite. A good stop off for a drink.

I had the lamb and chorizo pie. I asked about it prior to ordering and the owner was honest and said it was not homemade and was bought in. Despite that I really enjoyed it. I mentioned that the mash could have done with more seasoning but I felt like I wasn't taken seriously. Unfortunately other meals ordered were not up to much. Madras curry was bland. My son complained of ill effects the next day after having the Pasta bake. When we came to order our mains and later the desert, our server on both occasions implied there was some doubt whether the kitchen was still open. The fact of the matter was that we telephoned at 6.30 to make a reservation. We were told we could have a table at 8.30. We arrived at 8.30 but were only served drinks and it was 9.00 before our food order was taken. I raised this during the visit but again it didn't seem to be taken seriously. It's not our first visit here and it's a shame because in addition to the great location on which they obviously rely, there are aspects to this place which are good.

Booked for dinner this week with three friends and honestly wished I hadn't.I ordered the steak pie which I thought would be home made with a selection of fresh veggies and maybe a jacket spud. No such thing and the dry shop bought/frozen thing arrived plated up with a copious amount of chips to fill the plate space and frozen peas. Not even a jug of gravy on the side.It instantly reminded me of an inferior truck stop meal from the 1970's.The two scampi meals together with so called Madras curry were not enjoyed by my friends and the Madras Curry was pathetic with no complimentary side dips. You definitely need to think twice before booking to eat here. The service was good however from the friendly young lad assigned to our table. That is the only aspect I can recommend about our visit and needless to say, we won't be booking again.

It took nearly 3 hours of cliff top walking from Hartland Point before we reached the Wrecker’s Retreat – the public house which was part of the Hartland Quay Hotel. There was still and hour left of lunch service which ends at 2.30 pm. We found a bench in the shade with a view across the bay – it was a very attractive scene. The menu was simple pub food – I ordered the chicken tikka and my wife had a whitebait starter. The food came up in timely fashion and was served on very hot plates. Portion size was quite sufficient and felt replete ready for the return leg of our walk. We still had room for dessert – we both had white chocolate roulade with raspberry ice cream. We were presented with a huge slab of the stuff topped with clotted cream – watch out arteries! I really enjoyed my pint of Cornish cider which really hit the spot on such a sunny day. The meal represented very good value for money.

We were a party of four, camping nearby, we walked down to the pub looking forward to a good meal. Sadly, the meal was a terrible disappointment the sea bass while reasonably cooked had an unpleasant soggy skin, not the crisp tasty skin expected. The vegetables, sliced runner beans and sweetcorn, were an inedible mush and completely flavourless respectively. Both probably from big bags of cheap frozen vegetables. The fish and chips was poor to average as was the curry.

We have dined at the Wreckers Retreat on and off for about sixteen years, and have enjoyed good pub food there until it changed hands - maybe two or three years back. Since then we have visited twice more, most recently at Easter 2019. The first visit, I ordered Chicken Tikka, but, although nicely flavoured, the chicken was tough and fibrous. Really chewy. Then, this last visit, I ordered "Curry of the day". What turned up was chunks of some kind of meat, with rice and naan bread, but I could detect not the slightest hint of curry flavour, and some pieces of the meat actually tasted as if they had been allowed to go bad before being cooked. Ugh! My son, who dined with us, had a lasagne which he described as "not very good". My wife had scampi and chips which she said was OK. What a pity. This place needs a new chef. The food does not do justice to the hard working and helpful staff, nor to the beautiful surroundings.

We are regulars at Hartland Quay and we always stop for a meal at the Wreckers Retreat. This is really a lovely example of a country pub, and it is in a beautiful location. The bar is deliberately Olde Worlde and rustic. Long may it remain so. The staff are friendly and efficient and this place seems to attract nice customers as we always end up having a chat with strangers, something I normally find difficult. The food; every meal we have had has been excellent. The portions are generous and the prices are not excessive. When we visited last week there was a folk band playing. I say "band" but I suspect they were a group of mates enjoying themselves. They were very good, actually and while I am not a folk fan I really enjoyed the music. In summation I would recommend this place. Very good food and very good company.

We sat outside overlooking the stunning quay and it was such a relief not to be plagued by seagulls - this has got to be partly down to the brilliant staff who are constantly clearly away plates from empty tables. Great service, very reasonably priced and the location is second to none.

Great spot on the Quay for traditional seaside pub classics. Quick service, reasonable prices and good quality.

Food was below average for quality and taste. I ordered a prawn, squid and mussel risotto which consisted of 2 chewy overcooked prawns and a handful of tiny bits of squid and loads of stringy mussels in what seemed like quick cook rice with no flavour to it. I kind of expected good seafood as it was a seafront restaraunt but was very wrong.the table we sat at felt tacky like it needed a good clean. The outside ladies toilet was dirty and the door into the ladies was grimey.

Good old fashioned pub grub. Good, friendly atmosphere in this close to the elements pub. The end of the long road down - brings you to an amazing courtyard and pub leading on to some dynamic scenery and a good pint!

Great staff were helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and the service surprisingly quick as this was on a very busy Saturday night. The location of Wreckers Retreat is nothing but stunning a great place to eat.

As a local family we have returned to the wreckers bar for food many times and have always been disappointed by the substandard food. This time it will be the last time we come down for food. Firstly our order came out in dribs and drabs even though we had all ordered under the same table number, with some of us finishing our meals before the rest had arrived. The children's meals were also incorrect, having asked for chicken goujons and receiving fish fingers. Finally, when the rest of the food arrived, those of us who had cod and chips were in for a nasty shock as all our fish was off and smelling of ammonia. The lovely waitress took it back to the kitchen for us and the manager came to apologise and gave us a refund. We were asked if we wanted anything else's but quite frankly if the cooks cannot smell the ammonia coming from three pieces of off fish we really didn't want to eat anything served to us from that kitchen. We are all incredibly disappointed by the substandard food and our family will not be returning, such a shame as we really want to support our local businesses.

This Hotel and bar is in the most stunning location with jaw dropping cliffs and rocks . A truly wonderful location and well worth a visit. Be sure to bring I phone or camera for pictures. There is a very welcoming bar with snacks and pub grub, with pleasant and helpful staff.

The staff is great and friendly, the food is good without being fantastic but what makes the Wreckers Retreat so amazing is the location just beside the sea cliff in Hartland Quay. Unforgettable!

Spent two nights in the hotel: the bar & restaurant has good local food at reasonable prices. It has a cosy atmosphere and the staff are efficient, friendly and helpful. We had three meals and all were fine.

Stayed at the Hartland quay hotel in April and used the pub for lunch snacks, evening meals and some nice relaxing down time. The bar is of a good size with plenty of seating and when we went we managed to find a perch each night. That said I should imagine it would get very busy in the high season as it's quite popular with both hotel guests, walkers on the coast route and day visitors.

A first visit at lunchtime and in need of refreshment. Excellent atmosphere and a good pint. Food was very good and at a reasonable price, with quick and friendly service too. Just what we needed.

Given its location the interior of this pub displays scant attention to its history. The decor could be any 70s town centre bar. It really does need a complete refurb and done in a style that relates to the history and location. It may then be a place to linger over a pint or two. Given its proximity to the sea the menu should have been dominated by lovely Devon fish dishes.....but sadly it was not. I gather there may be new owners(?) i wish you well.

Friendly enough, and nice beer and crisps. Those were fab. We ordered food though and that was a shocker. I mean, really, how hard is a cheeseburger and chips? Burger was a plain bap, untoasted containing a hockey-puck burger and unmelted grated cheese AND THAT'S IT. All a bit "We are from the 70s - what is this 'burger' of which you speak?" No lettuce, no relish, not fresh mince, no pickle, no cheeky strip of bacon. No effort, no love, no chance of a return visit.

Great food served piping hot from friendly smiley staff, what more do you want?? Well worth a visit. The ham/leak pie with mash and peas is a winner. The Steak and ale pie is also very nice.

The Wrecker's Retreat is right on the rocky north Devon coast, with crashing waves all around. That's reason alone to visit this place. The beer is good and they serve huge baskets of chips (with cheese if you want) - a great post-walk snack. We chose pasta and cauliflower bake - the only veggie choice on the main dinner menu, although there was a veggie chilli on the specials board. The pasta bake could have been so much better. As it was plain pasta and cauliflower had been topped with a thick cheesy sauce and heated up. As a result, the top was OK, but the bottom of the dish was boring plain unsauced pasta and cauliflower. I would always go back to the Wrecker's Retreat, because of where it is and because the pub is characterful (refurb has not taken any of the character away, thankfully) and the staff friendly. But I won't have the pasta bake again.

My wife and I parked at Hartland Quay and walked down the coast path to Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall (a great walk). We then dropped in for a drink and some lunch. The location is amazing and the cosy, welcoming atmosphere of the pub made us want to stay all afternoon, especially on a cold winters day! The staff were so friendly and welcoming, making us feel very at home with our 8 week old son too. The food was good pub grub and just what we needed. We will certainly drop in again next time we are down that way.

Fantastic food and service! Hidden gem of a pub which I know the locals won’t want anyone knowing! Best burger I’ve had in a long long time :)

We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.

The van runs a generator all day to power the van, noisy and polluting. must be a greener way to run a business.

Ate here twice. Food is reasonably priced. However, no fish in the fish pie and I am 100% sure that our fish n chips came from the local chippy. No way was this cooked on site. Another meal had totally different chips served. And I definitely wouldn’t order from whatever chippy it was! Staff v nice, service good and some music we heard was absolutely fantastic. We would return but will be selective in what we order.

A cosy, traditional Devon country pub serving a good Sunday lunch. The staff were very welcoming and the locals charming to chat with. We enjoyed a roast beef lunch with the trimmings, and a delicious bowl of bread pudding and custard. Good value at under £20 each and a lovely place to be on a rainy winters day. Car park just across the road on the A386, don't drive by, stop and decide what you think.
