We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.

Further to my less-positive review during the summer, I am so relived that this lovely place to eat has found its way again. Good food, much of it home-grown, and a decent selection of non-meat options for the environmentally conscious. Thank you, Rosemoor.

Brilliant. We are so pleased that this restaurant has found its way again after a spell in the wilderness earlier this year. Once again it is offering seasonal food, much of it sourced from the garden, which is just as it should be in a location like this. And there are really good plant-based options, which are much appreciated. Thank you to the chef and friendly staff for resurrecting the standards that your regulars had come to expect - and which we missed earlier in the summer!

Last time we went to Rosemoor for lunch I had the small roast chicken. It came with stuffing, and leek and broccoli in a cheese sauce. Today, no stuffing, a tiny piece of leek a carrot and two bits of broccoli, no cheese. Roast potatoes ok. Many older people prefer smaller portions, but it's as if we're being punished for this - by shrinkflation. Honestly, is it acceptable to serve roast chicken with no stuffing - in England at any rate? - so cheap and easy to make. The puddings and coffees were good, the staff as always, prompt and helpful. As locals we do love Rosemoor, but be warned, there's a pub not far away that does delicious small roasts for the same money, and a regular size for far less!! Why not introduce booking if it would help...

As long term RHS members and living relatively locally we visit Rosemoor Gardens fairly often. Lunch in the previously laid out Garden Restaurant was always the right choice to complement our visit. Not so any more with the new style table service and limited choice menu. We’ve tried it twice in the last few weeks, thinking that our first disappointing visit might have been a ‘one off’. Not so it seems, as this latest visit was equally disappointing. A strange, very limited choice menu and not improved by the “special” - a very bland pulled beef concoction. All four of us had similarly mediocre meals. And at £22 for two courses it is not cheap. Come on RHS, this is not to the high standards we had previously come to expect. The previous restaurant arrangement and choices were preferable. We didn’t mind queuing! Please be aware this criticism is not a reflection of the staff who try their best but are not backed up with a quality menu. We will eat elsewhere on our next visit to these otherwise outstanding gardens which never disappoint.

We took my elderly mother to Rosemoor gardens and decided to treat her to lunch in the Rosemoor restaurant. To be honest, I wish we hadn't bothered as the menu choice was limited and the chicken dish we all chose was tough & uninspiring. We didn't bother with dessert. I expected better. The staff were busy but friendly enough and the gardens themselves were lovely so Mum enjoyed her afternoon out but I doubt we'll eat there again with better options available locally.

This used to be a brilliant restaurant, when the chef liaised with the garden to cook seasonal food. Now the vegetarian options are stuck in the last century - for a 'proper' Sunday lunch we were offered a plate of veg and gravy. You couldn't make it up. Just dreadful. So lazy, so old-fashioned, where has the creativity and imagination gone? We heard other tables trying to find a decent vegetarian option too, and the poor woman at the next table who was dairy intolerant really struggled to get broccoli not smothered in cheese. We have been visiting for years, often staying at Rosemoor House, and this plummet in restaurant standards is staggeringly disappointing. Please, please, bring back the contemporary, seasonal food that you used to do so well. We are back in October, meeting friends for a meal - I sincerely hope things have improved by then. We heard someone ask if the chef had changed recently, and they were told that s/he had. I think you need to change again!

A wonderful experience. Two of our party had Coeliac Disease, and one of these was also lactose intolerant and could not eat onions, so we were a tricky group for which to cater. I phoned the restaurant to find out what was available, and spoke to the extremely helpful Food and Beverage Operations Manager who then emailed me with a menu which the Head Chef would be able to produce. It was an excellent meal in every respect, with great service, in a beautiful setting. We were amazed by the consideration we received, and would highly recommend Rosemoor to anyone.

Rather than eat in Barnstaple where we’d been for a hospital appointment, we came back to Rosemoor as the lunch has always been superb. Not today though! The usual choice of hot food was not on the menu - it had been replaced with rustic plates. The food was disappointing, dull and very expensive for what we had. Rosemoor has always been a firm favourite for us, particularly for Sunday lunch, but sadly we won’t be visiting the restaurant again until we hear that the full menu is reinstated. Such a shame. The staff were lovely though.

Such a shame. I’ve loved the new style restaurant with the lunchtime choice of meals. They have changed to something called rustic plates. What a disappointment. I had the pulled pork and apple sauce in a ciabatta with rosemary potatoes and salad. It was nice enough although the potatoes were cold just not the excellent meals I’ve been used to and expecting. Service is excellent however and the staff very pleasant

We'd pre-ordered the one course meal. What a let down after the marvellous Glow. We had booked separately to a friend who was with us but the greeter was surly about seating us together and implied she could only just fit us in sitting together - perhaps understandable if the cafe had been full but it was two thirds empty. Poor hospitality skills on show. We had booked for 6.30pm and arrived promptly so we were surprised that it took 20+ minutes for our food to arrive. Perhaps it had been sitting on a servery waiting for someone to bring it to us as the beef in a bun and the chips were stone cold. The portion of coleslaw was diminutive so all in all very poor value for £14. You are letting yourselves down with this.

My husband and I enjoyed a two course set meal for just under £20 per head. The food was delicious and well presented, showcasing the seasonal vegetables grown on site. Once sat down the set meal had a couple more main meal choices than are advertised on their website. We enjoyed the Salmon, chestnut mushroom and squash pie, ginger sponge and custard and apple panna cotta. The quality of the food, especially the main course was superb.

We visited RHS Rosemoor and had lunch in the restaurant; excellent, a far cry from the horrors of catering at Wisley. I had parsnip soup with stuff floating around in it (cabbage leaf, watercress, pine nuts) with a baguette and local Brie. The salad that came with my husband's baguette was very good. It was table service, which was unexpected but welcome, and the staff were pleasant and friendly.

We were enjoying a day out at Rosemoor and decided to treat ourselves to lunch from the set two-course menu. This cost around £20 which is roughly what you'd pay for decent pub grub, but was so much nicer. Food was well presented, extremely tasty and portion size was good. The only issue was the service. Unusually for table service, you pay when ordering but that was fine. Our first course arrived reasonably quickly and, having finished, we waited patiently for our plates to be cleared and our desserts to turn up. After about half an hour our patience was pretty much exhausted so we had to ask a different waitress to help out. She was back in five minutes with the desserts. I thought this was a one-off case of the original waitress just forgetting us but, looking at other reviews, perhaps there's a training issue here. Still, we weren't in a rush, and the food was delicious, so no real harm done.

We have been RHS members forever, have visited Rosemoor since its inception and now use it regularly for just a lovely walk around the garden or to meet friends for lunch. The recent refit of the Garden Kitchen had taken a very long time, longer than predicted but finally, today we met up with old neighbours. The restaurant space is very pleasant and obviously can seat more people than the old layout. However…….. Our staple of homemade soup using produce from the kitchen garden, roll and Devon cheese is gone as are the wonderfully presented and dressed jacket potatoes. (You can have a half jacket if you are a child). Unless you want the special set menu which is now quite expensive your only choices are a ploughmans’ for £12.50 or ciabattas for £10.50. You can sit and have only coffee or tea but if you really just want a light lunch, a sandwich or a pasty for instance, you are now relegated to the cafe………… So sad.

Our second visit to Rosemoor, but our first to the newly renovated Garden Restaurant. We opted for the set price menu of around £18 for 2 courses, and we definitely were not disappointed- the food was delicious. Service, although friendly and helpful, needs to be more organised. It seemed completely haphazard - we never saw the same person twice - and consequently it was very inefficient, with some tables left waiting for quite some time. I am sure that these were ‘teething issues’ for the new summer season, and that it will soon match the standard of the fabulous food.

During our visit to Rosemoor we decided to eat lunch there, which was a good choice. Initially I found the kitchen to be surprisingly expensive as we just wanted a bite to eat, but when bought our cold lunch we were pleasantly surprised. We then understood why the restaurant was so busy on a Wednesday afternoon! The coronation chicken sandwich was divine, so I would definitely recommend it. However, to no fault of their own, the very young wait staff seemed stressed and overworked as there were so many people- filling every seat in the restaurant. I wonder if this was a one-off or whether this is a regular occurrence. Overall, a good lunch and would visit again.

Of especial note was how friendly and efficient the staff were - a BIG plus! Minus points: the queue was long - I know this was a busy time of day but it seemed a little too long and would have hoped there had been a different arrangement; having picked up the hot food, queued for a hot drink, queued to pay, queued for water & cutlery by the time you got to your table the food was cold. But the food was excellent and reasonably priced.

Being a vegetarian, you can always count on Rosemoor to have suburb food for us. The puddings are great as well.

Called if for a cake and a coffee just to get a break from this amazing place there’s so much to see here and you could not get around it without taking a rest break. Some other visitors had taken a picnic and found a spot to enjoy it so they had obviously been before and taken advantage of a lovel spot to enjoy it in and there are many such spots around this place. Still this cafe has amazing choice of menus and you can easily go overboard.

Since we were visiting the excellent rose display in the gardens we decided to try the restaurant for the 4th time in the hope that service might have improved since our last visit. Unfortunately, once again we were disappointed.

3 of us had lunch today £10.95 or 2 courses for 13.95. I had one course which was there goats cheese, pea and walnuts cheese cake with beetroot chutney, my husband had chicken breast with this really nice relish. Our other family member had salmon, all the meals came with new potatoes, salad and assortments of coleslaw etc. I was told by my husband that his pudding of toffee apple trifle was wicked. Drinks was teas and latte, very reasonable for 3 people £43.00. Staff very friendly and attentive, very busy restaurant, seating inside and out

Wonderful facilities available to suit most taste. We were able to assuage our hunger and have a suitable beverage to wash it down, Grand place.

My wife and I revisited Rosemoor this holiday having enjoyed our last visit in 2017. Unfortunately when we got to the table my wife became ill and couldn't eat. The immediate attention of the staff was amazing and so caring. The head of the staff in the kitchen couldn't have been more caring and helpful. She actually stayed with us until my wife felt a little better. That is the standard of practical care given by a very efficient and loving staff...shown also in the way food is served!! I recommend this place with the highest of accolades.

I've had lunch and an evening meal here recently... both fabulous, filling and with lots of fresh-from-the-garden ingredients. Sandwiches you can barely bite into, they're so big... cake that's moist and full of flavour... desserts sweet and satisfying; I think this restaurant gives many of its regional competitors a real run for their money.

We often go to Harlow Carr and it was great to see RHS Rosemoor. Everything was so much further on being 300 miles further South. This is a fantastic place and so relaxing walking round. Great plants, lawns, wild flower meadows and walks in the woods. So fortunate we can see such wonderful places as part of our RHS membership.

Go Rosemoor to spend time walking and exploring these wonderful gardens. Take a pencil and paper with you so you can makes note about the many plants you would love to plant in your garden. Then treat yourself to lunch, especially Sundays. The roast is second to none.

The van runs a generator all day to power the van, noisy and polluting. must be a greener way to run a business.

Fantastic food and service! Hidden gem of a pub which I know the locals won’t want anyone knowing! Best burger I’ve had in a long long time :)

Ate here twice. Food is reasonably priced. However, no fish in the fish pie and I am 100% sure that our fish n chips came from the local chippy. No way was this cooked on site. Another meal had totally different chips served. And I definitely wouldn’t order from whatever chippy it was! Staff v nice, service good and some music we heard was absolutely fantastic. We would return but will be selective in what we order.

A cosy, traditional Devon country pub serving a good Sunday lunch. The staff were very welcoming and the locals charming to chat with. We enjoyed a roast beef lunch with the trimmings, and a delicious bowl of bread pudding and custard. Good value at under £20 each and a lovely place to be on a rainy winters day. Car park just across the road on the A386, don't drive by, stop and decide what you think.

2nd time I have ate in this place whilst staying at Premier Inn and bar closes at 930pm despite saying 11pm on website and didn’t even hear last orders called out - will stay elsewhere when next down
