This was a return visit for five hungry fisherman staying locally at Stafford Moor. We enjoyed the steak so much last year we decided to return. The food was delicious and four of us tucked into puddings. All the food was served by Di who we’ve taken a shine to. There’s three real ales to choose from; an angler’s paradise and a well run establishment. Taking nothing away from this some of the locals didn’t appreciate being moved so we could occupy the table reserved for us. While we didn’t feel especially uncomfortable the more fragile may have done, one individual was particularly unhappy and spent most of the time glaring at us. We’ll be back in a year which should give him time to improve his manners.

Great find in Dolton. Warm welcome from Andrew and his staff and a friendly environment within the pub. The Sunday roast was mahoosive, you won't come away hungry. Loads of tasty veg. Di's homemade desserts were simply delicious. My husband says that Andy pulls a mean pint of Guinness!!

It is a shame that all pubs etc have to charge so much for drinks and food but when it comes to quality occasionally you do not mind. This place does have free parking and is spacious but because of the government Bs on taxes etc you will notice it is not as packed out as it used to be many decades ago. There is a new landlord they do supply top quality meals and has kept this pub on form. I am sure if everybody had more money this place would be packed out everyday. People do come from miles around to this venue and every one seems happy and friendly. I hope the next general election brings in a government that can create that wealth for its citizenship so that these types of venues can survive as the Royal oak deserves a vibrant future

This was the last night of our fishing holiday at the nearby Stafford Moor. As a group of 4 blokes who travel and eat out lots we unanimously agreed this was one of the best fillet steaks we’d eaten. Honestly, the local beef was superbly cooked and delicious with the usual trimmings. We drank Bays Real Ale and Guinness. Service was excellent and we passed on our compliments to the Chef. Excellent beer, top quality steak in a traditional Devon pub - what’s not to like? Highly recommended by all four of us.

We ate here with two friends on the pub’s curry night. Have to say the chef had made a lot of effort with four or five interesting dishes on offer with rice, poppodums, naan bread, raita and pickles plus a kind of bhaji. My wife and I were on holiday in the village of Dolton, so we decided to try the local pub for a drink and some food. It was noisy, all the tables were taken with drunken louts cackling away, many seemed to be staring at us and making us feel uncomfortable. Bar staff ignored us completely and continued serving other people. The whole place gave off a very negative vibe, so after constantly being ignored we left. Luckily the pub down the road, The Rams Head is much more friendly and managed to fit us in.

I have to be honest, i cannot understand the reviews on Trip Advisor or Google For this pub. The odour on entry was immediately off putting - and whilst this could be subjective my family were surprised that something rated so high could smell so bad. My wine was off - and whilst instantly replaced by the very helpful barman - it was replaced with something also undrinkable. I would question the cleanliness of the pub and did not hang around to eat. Sorry i cannot be more positive.

Great place for a couple of drinks, especially after one of the 'Dolton' walks - as advertised in the brochure left in the bar or in the campsite. Beer really well kept and great value. Well done to the landlord. However, curry night wasn't at the same standard unfortunately. We were given a table in the empty restaurant - the bar, which seemed very friendly, had a couple of tables but we presumed these must be for locals. The curries we ordered were very bland and very ordinary. The service was good but it didn't make up for the lack lustre food. I would return - and did for the beer - but not on curry night.

The Royal Oak in Dolton is a tradition, old country pub set in the village square. It is a fascinating building with so much history and we were pleased to see it. We were, however, very disappointed with our lunch - perhaps we just chose the wrong thing. Being in the middle of the Devonshire countryside we were expecting a cheese ploughman's to be wonderful, but it consisted of one variety of not very tasty cheese, a small piece of bread (part of a white baguette), small amounts of apple and pickle with a bit of lettuce and slice of tomato. We have had many far more exciting cheese ploughman's elsewhere. Service was perfectly welcoming and friendly but sadly we wouldn't rush back for food.

We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.
