A cosy, traditional Devon country pub serving a good Sunday lunch. The staff were very welcoming and the locals charming to chat with. We enjoyed a roast beef lunch with the trimmings, and a delicious bowl of bread pudding and custard. Good value at under £20 each and a lovely place to be on a rainy winters day. Car park just across the road on the A386, don't drive by, stop and decide what you think.

Just had the worst lunch ever at The Malt Scoop Inn in Merton, absolutely gutted as it was a luxury treat to eat out as a family and it was the worst food we've ever eaten, I've had better £1 microwave meals...so disappointed...it was too late to walk away as they only accepted payment on order and we just wanted to enjoy a lunch together with no trouble...it took 45 minutes to serve and we were the only ones eating... I hoped this meant they were cooking some good food... Hard earned money down the drain and now feel sick 🤢 from making ourselves eat it...the lady that served the food wasn't exactly customer friendly and we didn't want to cause a scene as it was full of locals drinking... Gutted 😞 as we were so looking forward to a nice pub lunch as a family, time which we rarely get and when we do, we cherish it, but today we were better off getting a Supermarket Meal Deal... Never again 😞

Driving from Illfracomb to Okehampton decided we needed something to eat, most places that popped up on google didn't fit the bill, however, as we continued saw the sign outside The Malt Scoop. A quick check within, Sunday lunch on and dog friendly. The staff very friendly and the food like mum to to cook. I really can't fault. One of the best Sunday lunches, good beer in a pub that was built when thatch was fashionable. Also on Britstop

Have just been in for Sunday lunch and we had one of the best roast dinners that we’ve had for a while. Choice was limited to pork or lamb but it was beautifully cooked and presented. My partner and I were in the area visiting relatives and stayed 5 nights with our two Labradoodles. We ate there each day including a delicious Sunday roast lunch. The food was great and too much at times. I asked for half the scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast for breakfast after the first morning. Becky the landlady was funny and so helpful and we fell in love with her gorgeous dog Devon - such a character. We sat in the snug off the main bar in the evenings and chatted happily with the locals who were all so welcoming. Only downside were the steep steps to the room which might prove challenging to some guests but overall I would rate the place 11/10 and will certainly return. I have already recommended the place to friends.

There were a few things that weren't great about our stay. The first reason is there was no door to the bathroom, meaning there was no privacy when going to the toilet. I asked if there was a vegetarian full English and the owner replied in a rude tone " yes it's the full English but without any meat " and also the owner of the hotel / pub was banging on the other door down the hallway shouting hello to the other guests to get their attention and finally we were 30 minutes early to breakfast but the owner said we we had to wait for 30 minutes before she would serve us , even though there were only 2 other people In the whole place that were eating. The owner over all was really rude and is the downfall of our stay.

I had the pleasure of staying here whilst spending the week working in the surrounding area and beyond. Becky is a great host. Nothing was too much trouble even during the unfortunate circumstances we find ourselves in with Covid 19. And Devon, her dog is great fun to be around if you’re a dog lover. Food is great, the pub itself is quaint and welcoming with a great garden area to relax in after a hard days work. The room was very clean and spacious with no signs of dog hair as opposed to previous reviews. The fact that Devon is a non moulting breed and is not allowed near the guest rooms would lead me to believe the client had an issue Will definitely be booking back in when down in the area again whether that be for business or pleasure.

After booking and paying in full for 2 rooms I recieved a call from this person who claimed to be the owner. She was very abrubt and really quite rude from the outset of the conversation, and after a short conversation about not eating in her rooms (to which I tried to explain that we would not eat in her rooms, but we just wanted to observe social distancing and did not want to sit in any communal spaces to eat, and that we just needed the rooms as we are key workers working on critical 5G infrastructure in the area). I also said that we wouldnt need any breakfast as we would be up and out early. She then accused me of being argumentative, told me she was cancelling the rooms and she hung the phone up on me. I can honestly say that I have never been spoken to that way by anyone in the so-called hospitality industry, and I have never had to make a complaint before, this is the 1st time I have every written a review but I felt so offended by the way I have just been treated that I had to write this negative review. This woman was completley unreasonable and very unfair and the way she spoke to me as a paying customer was completly unacceptilbe. I then just recieved a call from booking.com stating that the accomodation is not available due to building works and a leaking roof in the room, which is total nonesence, so she is a bare faced liar as well as a very rude person. Avoid at all costs.Very unhappy!

Hubby booked a room for 1 night. We were visiting rhs Rosemoor and wanted a local pub to stay, we thought it would be lovely to have a drink in the bar and then some good pub food without then having to drive to a Hotel. 2 days beforehand we had phone call from the landlady to tell us the pub was closed Wednesdays and there would be neither food nor drink available. Deeply disappointed, we nevertheless decided to make the best of it and take a taxi to another local pub to eat. However, when we arrived at the Malt Scoop Inn I found our room completely inaccessible, due to recent knee replacement surgery. There were steep steps to get to our room, and within our room, to get to the bathroom. Not only steep steps, but absolutely nothing to hold onto, no handrails at all. There was no separate shower, just a bathtub, again not accessible for me.We went to speak to the landlady to explain that not only were we disappointed with the lack of pub facilities and food, the room and bathroom were just not suitable. We asked for a refund so that we could try to find another room locally, but she refused. Her only compromise was to offer to warm us up some lasagne from her freezer - presumably to sit by ourselves in a cold, empty pub!In the end it was so depressing and upsetting that we decided to leave and find somewhere else, despite not getting any refund.Other things to note - no door on the bathroom, just a curtain! Also the bar area was full of flies! So be warned, if you find steps even slightly difficult, this accommodation is not for you.Note - just down the road at the Ram's Head Inn we found a lovely cosy room with a wonderful comfortable bed and a cosy bar with amazing food for just £15 more then the Malt Scoop Inn. We had a lovely evening and were so glad we moved.

I checked the booking web site and found no trace of that info. Manageress was adamant she had seen it but when I asked her to find it on my smartphone she said she had other things to do. She was very verbally aggressive and I would suggest she needs professional help.

For many a visit to the Malt Scoop will not be a pleasant experience! It’s no modern hotel, has only two bedrooms, no facilities, very limited food offer and a somewhat “alternative” service offer! However if you want quirky and a very personal experience you may be happy to overlook its failings. The bedroom is spacious, well equipped, and has nice little touches like filter coffee. As the Inn appears to have only one member of staff the food offering is very limited and cooked by the owner/ barman etc....Food was basic but tasty. If you just want an over night stay and like quirky , the Malt Scoop might be for you!

B&B - excellent, large room facing the fields out the back, en suite and all that I could want and pre-ordered breakfast ready on time. All for £55 per night in August! Pub - I drink Ale and it hardly touched the sides, perfect temperature and very fresh. Beer garden - lovely views and big - I spent a lot of time out there. Food - I was completely satisfied every night and some things I found really delicious - the portion sizes are spot on, I couldn't finish a single plate, but someone else probably would. The Building - it's a very interesting building.Merton - why not? It's a very good base camp to explore a wide area and be back in time for dinner and drinks. And there are lots of things you can do or just look at nearby, including in Merton itself.

...so our campervan broke down literally on the doorstep of The Malt Scoop yesterday evening. During an extended wait for our breakdown service, the pub opened at 6pm and we couldn’t resist venturing in. The landlady ( sorry I didn’t catch your name) and Jordan were very friendly and welcoming, and offered the use of the pub phone as we had poor signal on our mobiles.Thankyou to one of the locals ( you know who you are!) who took a look at the engine and quickly diagnosed a snapped fan belt due to a seized alternator. We updated the breakdown service but it soon became clear that we would have plenty of time for dinner so we ordered lasagne and a steak and kidney pot pie- both piping hot and delicious. We had time to relax in the comfortable lounge by the bar until we were eventually rescued. So thank you to the staff for making our breakdown into a lovely dinner for two!.

We booked a late table, 4pm, the latest we could as we had a busy morning. Then started having second thoughts, end of service, would there be very little left, would it be hot, etc etc,Well, we needn’t have worried. Charming pub, welcomed by the resident pooch Devon, labradoodle I think. Our table was ready, there were still quite a few people there, mostly by the bar now. Huge choice of food, extras as it was Easter! We chose the beef, lamb and pork and have to say it was all superb. And then the veg started to come out, then more, and more! We have never been offered so much veg anywhere else and it was all piping hot and fresh. Sadly we couldn’t do it justice but we ate as much as was humanly possible . The staff were very attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed and that everything was to,our satisfaction. Sadly we didn’t have room for a proper pud, I was so temped by the sticky toffee pudding, my favourite, but just couldn’t manage it. We did have ice cream which was also lovely, creamy and very chocolately.A cosy pub, with a welcoming and cosy ambiance, great food and great staff. Some of the negative reviews must have visited on a bad day or they may be extra critical! Not everyone likes the same things! Will we go back.....ABSOLUTELY, there is a great menu to be worked through and I will update further.note: rating below for service, value and food is not allowing me to select so I’m giving 5* for them all

I wish I had read the reviews on here before going!! Everything is deep fried and burnt, even the buns my children's burgers came in. They wanted £8 for a kids burger and chips, that arrived burnt and were the cheapest frozen burgers you could find. My 'homemade' fishcakes and salad were far from homemade, but actually the only edible thing we were served. The onion rings were completely burnt and the batter was falling off, like they'd forgotten the egg in the batter. Then to top it all off my husband had the 9oz beefburger. He took a bite and boiling hot oil came flying out, burnt all up his arm and face and has left him with blisters on his gums and lips!!! We complained straight away, it's a husband and wife team, wife is front of house and husband cooking. The man was extremely apologetic and totally embarrassed, he clearly knew his food is crap. The wife started to argue with us trying to claim we were just after free food!! We had had 1 bite each. She was extremely rude trying to make excuses for the food and shouting in front of our children... perhaps the fact that we were the only customers in the pub should have told us every thing. Would never in a million years go there again. Shame as it sounds like it was nice before the new owners took over. Please take my word and avoid, you will be disappointed I promise. If I could give zero stars I would

Such a lovely, well decorated and furnished place that showed huge potential. It was a huge shame that it went so downhill from there. The barman was friendly but didn't really give us much of a clue as to where to go or sit so nothing quite like an awkward wonder in a small "local" pub to go and find your table. We ordered the vegetable sizzler with mushrooms and a 12oz med/rare rump steak. The vegetable sizzler was tasty enough although lacked one fairly vital part . . . The mushrooms! Not a single one to be found. Next, the steak. I ordered medium rare and I received very well done. It also certainly not 12oz of rump. After being asked if everything was ok and we had explained to the waitress the above the chef came out to "explain". Patronising isn't the word. To be sat there and preached to about regulations and temperatures of the centre of steaks without so much of an apology but an acceptance of the fact the steak was over cooked is not what I call a resolution or a good service. Lack of mushrooms on the vegetable sizzler with mushrooms simply had no answer.

A nice little pub. They had a fantastically varied menu - loads of choice and all sounding delicious. In the end both myself and my dining partner went for crab cakes on a glass noodle salad, which was nice but we were glad of the vegetable side. Prices very reasonable - generally less than£10 per main. Watching other dishes going out, the rarebit looked very good. Only comment is that the poor lady on the bar was also serving and front of house and rushed off her feet. And kitchen service was quite slow.

Such a shame and I'm sorry to have to write this but, service was slow, landlady didn't seem to know what was on her own menu (they have been there since beginning of June we are now mid August) had to wait for a table, I thought this was due to them being busy, we said it wasn't a problem anyway but when we were shown to the dining room we found there was only one other table of 4 in there! The table next to us had steaks, they were promptly returned to the kitchen as they weren't cooked to their specification. The cook brought some more out, stood there apologetic and banging on about how he had to make sure food was cooked properly as his EHO would knock his rating down if he didn't and how much of a risk he was taking giving them medium/rare steaks.Anyway, after a very long wait our food came out, mine was promptly returned to the kitchen as well... I had to laugh, it was still frozen in the middle! Chips were tepid and I was missing the homemade tartare sauce that goes with the dish, I asked where the sauce was and they brought a pot out that must of contained a small teaspoon of it, it was like water and I wished I hadn't bothered asking for it! I had waited so long for the second lot of properly cooked food to come out my partner had finished his long before mine had even come out. Thought we would of at least been offered a drink on the house for their cock up but sadly no, we won't be returning or giving any second chances. They appear clueless about good customer relations, details regarding their own pub and even how to cook or the basic concept of food science! There were only 6 people eating inc. us, dread to think of the service if it was busy!

Staying locally at deer park and was recommended this pub by our host. So glad we visited, twice in the weeks holiday. We were not disappointed. Owners are new to the pub but made us feel very welcome, Chatting to us and the children. Food was fresh, cooked to order and piping hot on arrival. Just what you would expect from a country pub, and not microwaved like lots of meals are in other establishments. Lots of choice and very reasonable. There was a bit of wait on food but we were told of the wait when ordered. And you can expect that when food is freshly cooked and not microwaved rubbish. This is more than likely to improve with experience over time, after all everyone has teething problems and owners are new to the pub. Thanks for making us welcome and your hospitality. We had a brilliant evening in a friendly local pub. Hope to visit again when were back in the area. Good luck to owners. Your doing fantastic.

This was our fourth visit in 4 summers staying at Smytham Manor and by far the least enjoyable. Then owners are very eager to please but the food was quite a few notches down where it used to be and took an age to come out. Yes, it was busy but I think 40 minutes for a starter is too much and it would have been better if we'd been told in advance. Restaurant aside, there didn't appear to be many in and the atmosphere wasn't what it was in previous years. Here's hoping it's just teething problems and the new owners get up to speed because at the moment it's trading on past reputation.

Lovely coffe but the visit was spoiled by the landlord's over-amerous dog's unwanted attention to my (male) dog! He could have done more to control it. Shame.

Scoured TA for the best place to go for Sunday lunch in north Devon and decided to try The Malt Scoop - and we weren't disappointed. Great, friendly welcome, no problem with the dog coming into the dining room and brilliantly prompt service/waitressing. My husband and I chose the slow-cooked beef brisket, 9 year old daughter had roast turkey - but child-size portion.Veggies arrived within 5-10 minutes and it wasn't until we were driving home that we realised just how many vegetables we'd been presented with... perfectly cooked carrot batons, peas and fine green beans; incredible roast potatoes, red cabbage, creamed, green cabbage; mashed sweet potato, mashed swede and lastly, the most delicious broccoli and cauliflower cheese. The roasts were all presented in oversized Yorkshire puddings, another - generous boat of gravy was provided - and sauces were also offered. Well, it was tough, but we got there in the end. We smiled at another diner's response to the waitress' asking 'Can I bring you anything else?' - 'No, please don't' - and disgustingly, made space for some puddings. Two gorgeous scoops of ice cream for daughter (flavours were inspired), spotted dick and custard for husband and a lemon and ginger cheesecake for me. All puds were fabulous.7 hours later, we've yet to eat again - seems that Sunday lunch at The Malt Scoop does that to you. Great food, unpretentious place, super-warm welcome and exceptionally well-priced, too.

This was our first visit to the Malt Scoop having driven past it many times. It's a small and quirky building with a typical village pub atmosphere. Friendly welcome. Limited choice but our roast lunch was very nice indeed. Both the braised brisket and slow cooked lamb were excellent. Plenty of vegetables, seven types in all and cooked properly (al dente). Service was efficient and the meal was value for money. Definitely worth a visit.

Finally visited here after driving past it since we moved to the area last year, we want for Sunday lunch with friends, really welcoming pub on arrival and the food was so good, best Sunday lunch i have had out, not only on quality but quantity too, and the crackling with the pork was perfect! Lots of choice on desserts too and they were scrummy as well. we all enjoyed our meal, really good value and the service was excellent, we will visit again very soon, they have an extensive daily menu so we need to sample some of those too, fabulous pub.

Never been before (despite living only 20 mins away), but was attracted by T/A reviews. And they were right - charming pub, good food, perfect price point, three ales well kept and, most of all, such a welcoming atmosphere - both from landlord (sorry no name) and Louise from the kitchen. Thank you. Will certainly return.

We stayed in a rented lodge close by and passed this pub by chance. We decided to stop for a roast Sunday Lunch as it was recommended in the lodge visitor's book we are both very glad we did. If you like good "home cooking" served by very friendly staff you will love it here. Probably one of the best Sunday roasts we have ever had (and we've had a few) and such excellent value at under £10 The selection of vegetables was amazing and could easily have fed at least another two people, we both wished we had room to try the home made puddings! We will go again if we are ever in that neck of the woods and cannot recommend it highly enough

The pub was recommended by the owner of our holiday let so we thought we would give it a try. We're so glad that we did. The owner was very welcoming and brought our greyhound a bowl of water as soon as we sat down. The food menu was amazing - so much choice. We didn't expect so much variety in what is quite a small village pub. Our waitress was charming and very attentive. The food was very tasty and of generous proportions so you would need a very big appetite to manage more than one dish. The choice of beers is good. I would certainly recommend this place.

Although we only stopped for a drink at lunchtime (and a packet of crisps -after the breakfast we had had nothing more was needed!) we were made very welcome by the barman and the locals in there! A lady was eating and her meal looked super! If we hadn't had good food where we stayed we would have certainly eaten there!Should we go back that way for a break we would certainly include The Malt Scoop as somewhere to eat!

We are a couple who enjoy the countryside, together with our dog we stayed at the Malt Scoop and had a really good time. The inn is in a great location for the Tarka Trail, Dartmoor and the North Devon coast Landlady Louise and her brother Ed and staff ensured that we were very welcome, well fed (fantastic food and very generous portions) and provided us with a clean and comfortable room. We were pleased to see that the pub is very well supported by the locals and there was a happy friendly atmosphere We thoroughly recommend this establishment, thanks from Sally Nigel & Stan

We stayed in a B&B just down the road from this pub and visited for an evening meal. It welcomes children and although there's no specific children's menu there were lighter bites and 'baskets' they could choose from. The food was tasty, nothing exceptional but just what we wanted after a long journey, the portions were rather large. The service was friendly and they were willing to make adjustments to the menu if requested. There was a great selection of flavours of ice cream. The toilets are accessed by going outside which our boys thought was cool.

Huge portions, cozy and interesting rooms. Made very welcome when we arrived 15 minutes before opening, a relief with two hungry kids! Really friendly and accommodating owners, flexible about us eating on sofas and changes to kids meals. Really good and would not hesitate to recommend to all, quiet couples drink, single visitors and families.

There were a number of positives of my stay in the Malt Scoop Inn, not least the delicious food which I had on my final night, the warm welcome and the proprietor going out of her way to provide breakfast for me very early in the morning. There were a couple of opportunities for the inn to improve which would make staying there more attractive. Firstly, the room had an extremely strong smell of air freshener which usually means something is trying to be covered. When I switched it off (I get headaches) there was indeed an odd smell in the room. The key thing, however, is the noise. On both nights of my stay there were drunken men in the bar immediately below the room shouting until midnight, meaning I hardly slept. If you are going to drink until 12am then go to bed, then this is fine for you. However, if you are in the area on business or want to sleep before 12, I wouldn't recommend them for a stay. Personally I wouldn't go back except for food.

Called into this pub for lunch after a walk in the country. The pub car park is on the opposite side of the road in case you are confused about where to park.It is fair to say that this pub has 'grown' over the centuries (and not plonked there by some corporate space-ship). It has very low ceilings and seating areas tucked out of the way in various places which frankly is fantastic! When we arrived we found the locals around the small main bar area and ascertained whether we could bring our dog in - thankfully yes, so a big tick there from the off. We sat in the next room and were brought the menu and told that there was both a specials board and a sizzlers board in the bar. So in effect three menus - and what a great choice too. In addition to this there was a good selection of local beers and ciders. The service was great and the staff very friendly. The food was also of an excellent quality - what more do you want?

My partner and I popped in for a quick lunch with our newborn.Staff were all so friendly sitting around the bar themselves even though they weren't on shift- you could see they just enjoyed being there and each other's company. They welcomed us in and cooed appropriately over our bundle of joy which was nice.We sat at the quaint bar by the warm fire whilst our food was freshly cooked~ then we were given the choice to stay Comfi where we were, could move to the more formal dining room or eat at the relaxed sofas in the next room.We chose the later and we noticed they'd put a small fire on in there too which was nice. Our food ( blue and black burger) was simply incredible! Fresh homemade burger with delicious sauces. You could taste the quality- and what was excellent is you could choose the size ( I went for the 4oz and my partner the 8oz- how anyone could eat the 16oz is beyond me as they were very filling). The bread was soft and the chips crunchy. The only advise we'd offer is to add some salad onto the plate- they kindly made us a lovely bowl with lots of grapes, lettuce, tomatoes etc ( which was so refreshing) but it would be nice to have that already.... It made a nice contrast to the saltiness of the burger and cheese.I think the thing that made it best for me personally as a new mum- was the acceptance yet privacy I was given when I had to breastfeed. The staff still talked to me normally without being embarrassed yet didn't hound us and certainly didn't ask us to leave ( which I've heard in other pubs does happen).Other customers came in, regulars and locals. All just as welcome as the next..It was a perfect lunch and we' ll be back.

Ate here twice. Food is reasonably priced. However, no fish in the fish pie and I am 100% sure that our fish n chips came from the local chippy. No way was this cooked on site. Another meal had totally different chips served. And I definitely wouldn’t order from whatever chippy it was! Staff v nice, service good and some music we heard was absolutely fantastic. We would return but will be selective in what we order.

We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.
