Mr Chips in Torridge

The website above clearly states that the chippy is open until 9 pm. (Monday). When I arrived last night at 8.25 pm, the lady behind the counter said they only had chips and one sausage. I live in the area; my son did a holiday job there. I have been to the place regularly to get excellent fish suppers, and as far as I know, they have always shut at 9 pm during the week, (like it says on the listing above). I have to say that the kebab which I got from Danny's Kebabs, just round the corner in Brideland Street was excellent. As a result of my disappointment, I won't return for some time. Giving duff information on the website is a form of bad service.

As usual the food here was excellent, a great menu choice very quick service by the people preparing the food and by the waitress. Recommended

Ordered a few times recently and ended up throwing most of the food away on the last two occasions. What's happened? It was always beautiful fish and chips and always a Friday treat. Unfortunately I will be going elsewhere now unless someone can tell me its edible again. Ordering large cod and getting fish half the normal size again isn't acceptable! I hate leaving bad reviews but it's not a cheap meal now, especially when the quality is poor!

Usually lovely but last night was very greasy, fish, plonked on top of chips with the grease making them unpleasant. Have you changed to a different oil?

Great food and equally great staff. Always busy but the staff work flat out and never fail to provide beautiful fish and chips.

I regularly visit Mr chips and the majority of times the food is good. Unfortunately today I popped in mid afternoon and purchased small fish and chips which were awful, I threw the fish away. Batter was Rubbery and fish was so dry and hard. I think they had sat in the warmer for a long time. Has really put me off going back.

There is no consistency in the food they produce. Sometimes the fish can be cooked well, others (and more often) it is quite frankly, revolting. Had the misfortune to have a haddock and chips takeaway the other night. The fish was so bad with wet soggy batter and fish that actually smelt, that I threw it away. I only live 2 minutes away and the food was passed to me in a paper bag so didn't sweat in a plastic one. Get your act together, because you do on occasion offer excellent produce. More often over the last year or so, you have not.

Not so impressed as chips were soggy and the fish was tasteless. Such a shame as used to enjoy them. Definitely a huge improvement. Fish is lovely, batter crisp and light, chips good and good size portions. We eat in the restaurant regularly and enjoy a hot plate of fish and chips. Brill. Had a meal tonight, brilliant, chips were great and the batter and fish scrummy.

The grilled cod is wonderful with very nice chips. In fact all their food is good. No atmosphere and poor service, but a great place for a quick fish dinner

Mr Chips has downhill in recent years, I suppose that is what comes of having no competition nearby. Got some cod and chips from here. Food was edible, but not piping hot. I had to ask for salt and vinegar on my meal and even then, there was very little put on my meal even after asking the server to not skimp on said condiments. All in all compared to a few years ago, the service here is poor and slow and the food is passable.

Chips can sometimes be excellent. At other times they can be quite soggy. I wish there were more vegetarian options outside of the halloumi and vegetarian burger. Staff are always polite.

Been coming here on visits for over ten years. Always a must have stop. Last visit was not up to the usual high standards. Chips cold and not cooked through. I assume a one off and will still visit next trip.

Ordered online and collected, the shop was very busy but my order was ready , drove back to our holiday cottage about 5 miles away still popping hot also reasonable prices and portions , went again later in the week as travelling home next day for sausage chips and onion rings for two total £14.40. 10/10 from me .

After coming here last year, we were looking forward to our fish & chips tonight. We were not disappointed....Best chip shop ever. The prices are so reasonable, a lot cheaper than anywhere at home. The cod is lovely, tasty & white with beautiful crispy batter. The chips are also gorgeous. It's a bit of a wait because it's so busy....but well worth the wait. Be having more next week before going home.

The place looked full and there were people in front of us but the speed of service (and eating!) meant that a table was very quickly available. The relatively healthy option of grilled haddock was available, much to my delight and the offer to top up chips if you needed more was both generous and unnecessary. Full marks for delivering great quality, value and service.

Worst portion of chips to date, taste like they've been sat there all day. Threw out for the birds. Quality of food has deteriorated over the last 2 years. Won't be wasting my money again.

Best fish n chips I've had lovely crispy batter fish is excellent would eat anywhere else

We visited this restaurant twice whilst in Bideford last week as we had previously been many times before. We weren’t disappointed! The meal was wonderful, the fish was delicious coated in very fine batter and the chips were cooked to perfection. The restaurant was a credit to the staff, it was spotless and the service was very prompt and professional! Well done team, we will definitely be back!

It was a very chilly and extremely wet day. We were on a flying visit to Bideford and desperate for a quick hot lunch. We were greeted and seated straight away. The service was excellent and the food was hot and tasty. We ordered the light bite meals which were still a generous portion.

Classic no nonsense fish and chips. Fair price. Has gone up alot as everything else has but still alot cheaper than some other places. Large cod and chips and a bag of scampy feeds a family of 4 with some beans from a tin at home.

For what it is, it's very good. Cooked promptly, friendly staff and a nice setting to eat. Only way to improve would be table and chairs, but there is enough space to sit and eat on the quayside.

We dined in the restaurant one evening and the food and service were very good. Huge portions! The cod was amazing! The batter was so light. We all enjoyed our food.

I went there with my family and waited to be served and they ignored us. They were just standing and having a conversation instead of doing they job!!

This chip shop is great for a supper with friends. The fish was fresh and tasted it l particularly liked the batter it was crispy and tasty. The chips were good. The portion size was good l am glad l was hungry. The service and staff were prompt with very little waiting and the staff were nice we gave them a good tip they deserved it. They served a nice wine as well. There wasn’t a large cost to our meal and it was value for money.

Our favorite place for lunch when we are coming from Cornwall where we live going onto destination in north Cornwall or Devon...service great even a sausage for our JR terrier Ted...food is cooked perfect love the place we will back soon

every time i go there for a cheeseburger they cant be bothered to cook it, they always say sorry we have just cleaned up. as i am a local all they want to do is simple food for the holiday makers

Always went to Mr Chips for years. Recently lots of new staff , service very slow . The staff are very blunt not friendly anymore. Also on computer they don't know what orders have been dealt with or not ! Sorry to say but gone down hill .

Very poor sizes for the prices. Bit of a rip off but only one in Bideford at the moment

Lovely fresh food and well organised service. The best Cod around! Delicious! They even have a Restaurant attached so you can eat in overlooking the River and Quay if you want to.

Ordered half chicken and chips and they brought out a half sparrow and a few chips. Doesn't justify £9

really good food with massive portions, can get a bit busy at peak times but a great place to takeaway or eat in, would definitely reccomend 👍

Superb meal in dog friendly fish n chips restaurant! Had the special, which was large cod (battered or grilled (which I had)), served with choice of peas or curry sauce and a drink (latte for me). The friendly staff even brought a sausage for my dog. Pleasant decor in seating area.

The food was good but we went in to order takeout and even though there was only one person waiting for their order the young girls didn’t even look at us. After 5 minutes I said “are you going to take our order?” And one of them finally said “can I help?” It was weird

Dog friendly, we visited with friends on a rainy Wednesday night. The food was delicious. We all had haddock and chips. The ladies had grilled haddock because they didn't want batter. We will be back again soon. Mustn't forget the doggies. Ghot a free sausage. Thank yyou all.

went to mister chips today and ordered jumbo battered sausage and chips x2. yes the service was quick but all in all if they had taken 20 more seconds then maybe my order would have been correct instead of receiving 2 normal sausages and chips that had no salt and vinegar, please take more care and read your orders because somehow the receipt is correct and the cashier himself did the whole order :)

Prime location but food and service are of a poor quality. Over cooked fish and missing items from order. We have visited Mr Chips before, the standard of food has slipped.

What a fabulous restaurant/fish shop! We visited the restaurant side with our 4 year old son whilst on holiday in the area. The place is spotlessly clean. The food was delicious and great value for money! And the lady who served us was so friendly - she gave our son a colouring sheet and colours whilst he ate he's food. He was also able to have child sized cutlery and a plastic cup to drink his water. I'd highly recommend this fish shop!

Simple large or small portions. Fish not weighed then priced, so thats good. Got there Sunday 25 mins before they close, was the last fry. Portions were a good size and everything tasted great. A lot better than others within 20 miles especially as it was so close to closing time.

What a disgrace. I ordered by the internet as staying 20 mins drive away from Bideford. When I got back to our holiday cottage there was no cod in the bag. When I phoned up I was greeted with the manager telling everyone that he’d 100% included the fish and that somehow I had turned the box upside down and the fish had fallen out. However, on reading other reviews maybe I’ve been saved from a dodgy meal.

went for fish and chips to eat on harbour. Only after ordering and waiting did they say they had no salt! Fish and chips with no salt is extremely bland. Fish didnt have much taste. There is a big morrisons 5 minutes drive away and smaller shops within walking distance, all still open. They could have sent someone out to get it from. Reason why only 2 stars as obviously dont care about the foot trade.

This is a great little chip shop lots of variety on food and drink from burgers to fish and coke to whisky that's right they sell booze. It is worth a visit we went into the restaurant area and the lady serving was friendly and chatty which is nice. I had the Mr chip special and a battered sausage my wife had the fish platter with chips both meals were amazing quality and portions. Worth a visit if in the area they do offer takeaway aswell :)

Lo Ely food and very good prices

I’m a local so I always had Mr Chips growing up and has only failed to impress a few times it’s constantly great and if you click and collect you get your food quickly. However the staff kind of ruin the atmosphere most of them are very helpful and friendly but some of them look like they just escaped from HMP Dartmoor. But it’s all part of the Bideford experience. If you’re visiting I recommend highly.
