Woodmans Arms in Gateshead

Popped over for lunch after a walk at Gibside, the Sunday roast was excellent (and with more meat options than the usual Sunday dinner elsewhere). The service was top notch too, I am definitely going back and taking my family too.

Everything was lovely about this place! Amazing food and service and the location was really nice too, it's quite a big place , not your usual pub but nevertheless everything was great, we will come back for sure.

Sunday lunch roasties over cooked beef could not cut . Staff friendly needs better signes for first time people no good for disabled people .I wouldn't go back

First visit here for an evening meal with my wife. Quite a large place in a nice setting with plenty of outdoor seating. We were seated quickly to our pre-booked table and our drinks order taken whilst we viewed the menu. I ordered steak and ale pie with chips,peas and gravy, my wife, ribs and belly pork with fries. Food arrived quickly, I thoroughly enjoyed my pie n chips but my wife's ribs/belly pork and fries were a little underwhelming. Unfortunately it went downhill with the service from here as nobody bothered to ask if our meal was OK or if we would like any more drinks. I eventually caught the attention of another server and ordered another drink and asked for the dessert menu. Over 5 minutes later we were still waiting, I eventually got the attention of our first server and told her we were still waiting for our drink/dessert menu. She promptly brought these and we both ordered sticky toffee pudding which was delicious. I will probably try here again at a later date and hopefully my experience will be better. 🤞

Food was excellent but there was NO Disabled parking although there was a ramp for disabled access to the premises whicj I thought was rather pointless.

Only had a drink.in the bar, but the decorations are lovely creating a great ambiance. Staff really attentive, friendly but professional.

This is a very nice food lead pub. It's got a very cosy atmosphere with a couple of wood burning stoves making it toasty warm. A very pleasant change for these days. The food is nicely cooked and presented. There isn't a fantastic choice of drinks for anyone who likes a pint, with no real ales at all. What they do have is a quite unpleasant stout, (not Guinness) and a couple of craft beers. Not trying to be a drinkers pub. Accommodation wise, there are 5 "suites"! However, the room that I stayed in would struggle to be called a double room, it was tiny. My suitcase had to be closed up and stood upright at the side of the bed, it was that small. This place is also not meant for staying away on business, as the breakfast wasn't served until 9am until 10am, meaning I had to miss my breakfast on the first morning. I did have breakfast on the second morning and it was very nice. Also, "we don't have the facility to charge food or drink to your room", meaning you had to pay for everything as you went. All in all, a pleasant visit, but not good for business travel.

Went for a meal for a friends birthday. Burger was over cooked. Service was ok but one of the managers was a bit rude and the whole place closed at 10pm! What’s that about? The staff were hovering over us to leave it was so uncomfortable. Won’t be recommending to anyone.

A lovely setting and a lovely meal

Absolutely awful! Walked in thinking how beautiful it looked. Came for my son's 1st birthday for lunch. Ordered the steak pie and my husband and son had the fish. I couldn't eat the pie. It tasted like mature stale cheese. I can't have cheese so asked if there was cheese in it as the menu didn't mention it. The waiter said that he didn't think so but would do check and ask. He never came back and avoided us after that. The fish smelt and tasted very fishy. We came away feeling ill. My son vomited a few times and he was poorly for the rest of the day. My husband was the same. Thank you for spoiling his first birthday! What a waste of £54! Didnt even get the ice cream we paid for either! Definitely avoid!

First time here, and what a place, absolutely amazing building, great decor cosy bar and food was fantastic On an extra note, Sam who greeted us at the door and and took our order and served our food was excellent and very professional We will definitely be back on a regular basis especially in the summertime

Sunday lunch is ok but man, are some things overpriced now! £4 for a modest cup of fries that my daughter got. £2.40 for a splash of cordial? Mental. Lunch tasted good, 6.5 or 7 out of 10 for that but haven't sampled the evening/none Sunday lunch menu for a while so can't comment. I can praise the speed in which the lunches arrived. Must have been 5 mins after we ordered. I want to rate 4 but the prices of some of the menu items is a bit of a shame.

We booked a table for a family birthday do. Front of house were fantastically accommodating, service timely, and the food really good. Perfect for this family.

Went for Xmas eve lunch what a disappointment, bland tough meat, very small portion and generally overpriced, got to dessert to be only told set menu wasn't even on!

We have always seen the Woodmans as a 'bit of a treat' so we booked it well in advance for New Years Eve. We were excited all day about our family meal (we have two little ones) and even got dressed up for the occasion. When we booked it, we checked the menu and were of the understanding that it was the main menu which we know from a previous experience is nice. However, we arrived and sat down to be told that it was the Sunday roast menu only. It had one non roast option! We would never have booked if this was the case. We asked if there were other options and were told no. We were then told by our server (who was polite and professional) that the main menu is normally available from 5pm. She checked with her manager and then returned to say that it would be roasts for the 'foreseeable'. So there wasn't even a clear message. So it was a roast or nothing. We opted for nothing. We had to stay and have a drink as the kids needed food otherwise we would have walked out. We debated for some time as to whether it was our mistake but then overhead two other families asking the same question and receiving the same disappointing answer. I can only assume there was an issue with staffing the kitchen as to advertise one thing and then deliver another is only going to upset customers. Either that, or it's a shockingly bad management decision. 2 stars as the drinks were fine and the girl serving us was polite and professional. P.S. they then brought the wrong kids meal! We only ordered one meal and they got it wrong. P.P.S. the wife tried to order a prawn cocktail starter to nibble on and they didn't have any left. A bad showing and we won't go back.

Beautiful place. First time visiting, and it has such a lovely atmosphere. You reach the entrance and walk through a lit up glittery flower arch. To the left, there is a wonderful display dedicated to the Chronicles of Narnia books, definitely worth 5 minutes of your time to look at (Not sure if this is Christmas based so may be temporary) Service was friendly and quick, and I was even advised that my steak, leek and guiness pie could take 30 minutes (due to cooking fresh) and it arrived quicker than expected, and still tasted delicious! It was reasonably priced for what you get as and the location is quiet and remote. Definitely coming back again!

Service is usually a little slow here, however the food is normally delicious so we don’t mind and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately, last night we were left waiting 15 mins without being offered a drink. For us this is an unacceptable wait for a drink - I don’t mind waiting for food but I think the bare minimum is to be offered a drink straight away. Once we had our drink and had ordered food it came quickly. The food is normally delicious, but last night sadly my pizza was burnt on one side and the base was way too thick compared to normal. Don’t think we’ll be returning for a while.

Soup was watery , crab was sparse. Wish id gone for set meal , did want pie but was told had to be cooked so 30 minute wait.

Great place to eat out away from the hassle and bussle. Also, cater for GF needs Great decor all year round with friendly service, warming, cosy environment, and fab food choices. 😀 👌 If your travelling far, and want to make a night of it, you can take a chance to snap up one of the 5 awesome bridal suits ( if they are not already being used for a wedding). Haven't had a chance to stay there yet, maybe one night!

Lovely food, friendly staff and lovely setting. Very beautiful place. Drinks are terrible though, the vodka cocktail that costs £9.50 was shoved in a glass with froth coming over the side and tasted awful, not even served with a straw. The white wine was also absolutely awful. We were brought another tables drinks which caused confusion and then I assume because of this, we were over charged for drinks but this was sorted out. Waiting staff were friendly about it though. Its lovely but for the prices charged I probably wouldn't come here if I was planning to have alcohol with my food.

Myself, my daughter and 2 of our friends visited the woodsman’s arms on the evening of Tuesday the 19th of December, to have what we class as our Christmas night out. I absolutely cannot fault the food, it was as usual, delicious. What I do take offence with, is the fact that our server came over at about 9.30, after we had finished our meals and desserts, to say that last orders was being called soon and did we want anything else, we said no as we still had drinks on the table, he then came back a couple of minutes later to ask, or should I say tell us, he was bringing our bill over, he then came over a few minutes later to again “tell us” he was bringing the card machine over. In short it felt like we were basically being thrown out. I didn’t say anything at the time because I think I was a little blindsided by our treatment and thought perhaps I was being a little sensitive, but in hindsight and after speaking to the people I was with, I don’t think I was, and the fact we were sitting in the car ready to leave at 9.56pm kind of proved my point to me, in fact I had to check my ring doorbell to make sure I wasn’t wrong about the time I arrived home. I’m not even angry, I just feel really sad and flat about the whole evening, it was a rubbish thing to do and a terrible way to treat people. I love the woodsman’s arms, it’s a beautiful place with amazing food, but I won’t be going back, and I’m doubtful whether the people I’m was with will either.

Best Sunday lunch we've had in a long time

Went as a party of 11 people, this was a Sunday lunch menu and the booking was made several weeks before. The Narnia setting for Christmas was a good touch, staff were very good, and that’s about it for positives, the food was no more than average, some of the party got wild mushroom on sourdough toast, toast was so tough many left it, the main course was what I would expect from any standard pub lunch. Nothing spectacular, but nothing really negative either. Then came the dessert menu, a few of the party had opted for a main course and dessert as opposed to starters, so after browsing the many options for dessert it was a disappointment to be told there are no desserts apart from ice cream ! What restaurant does not ensure it has enough food for a pre-booked party of guests ? The final disappointment was the environment, the venue was so hot it was uncomfortable to the point people were having to go outside for cool air, other parties were also complaining of this. Staff at the bar had electric fans aimed to cool the staff down. Overall a rating of 2 stars on the basis the table staff were pleasant, otherwise nothing special and not worth the drive out to this place.

Visited here on a business night, however it's always my go to place. Amazing service, amazing food and great atmosphere. Slightly out the way but it just adds the charm to it. Definitely worth a visit if you've never been before.

Decor and service excellent but food and drinks a bit pricey compared to neighbouring pubs.

We just called in for coffee and cake and to see Narnia... loved that. We were seated in cosy armchairs next to a log burner and given the dessert menu. It took a while to be served (couldn't see if the restaurant was busy) but when the desserts came they were absolutely delicious.

Had a catch-up with some friends pre Christmas. Beautiful decor for Christmas with the Narnia theme. Lovely atmosphere. Thank you

Been wanting to try this place for a while, so pleased we finally got to go. What a beautiful place. We got there at 4 on a Thursday afternoon and it was really quiet so got seated quickly. We sat next to the log fire which was lush for a freezing day. The Christmas decorations were lovely and the food was top notch!!! The waitress serving us was soon lovely, it was her last day before maternity and instead of rushing us around or being impatient (which to be fair being heavily pregnant and being on your feet all day We wouldn't of blamed he) she was attentive, friendly, friendly and nothing was too much bother. The food was DELICIOUS!!! Definitely won't be the last time we go. The variety of food was great from home comforts like fish pie and lamb chops to Asian style meals to something a bit different like the venison ragu. Highly recommend!!!

Best meal I've had in donkeys. The pregnant lady that was serving us was an absolute diamond and I wish her all the luck in the world. Décor was beautiful. Only thing wrong was the pizza could have in the flames a bit longer

Currently here now partner is gluten free Sunday menu only one option for a starter And one desert Don't visit if your gluten free For that reason we wont return In response to your reply if you had done your research you would no that we asked if there was any other alternative to soup and was told no Partner is also allergic to sea food Ordered extra veg which arrived halfway through our meal so sent it back if we had waited for it the meals they would of been returned as they were only luke warm when they arrived anyway and would of been stone cold There was no apology for this from any staff member

I was really looking forward to my lunch . I've been here few times, and the choice of gluten-free menu is usually high standards, but today I got one choice for starter ( so if you have an allergies, you got no choice of starters and same for dessert) ordered beef dinner yet again penalised for been Gf as no Yorkshire pudding and dinner was luke warm .. got no apologies... Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately, I will not be changing my score, we asked the waitresses if there was any other options for gluten free apart from the Sunday menu and was told bluntly no, our dinner came not only was it luke warm we had ordered additional vegetables which came when we were actually half way through our dinner witch I did not finish as I like my food hot, we sent the additional vegetables back .. we did not get an apology when we spoke about our dispointment..

Came here on Friday and booked a table in the bar so we could bring our four legged friend with us. The team were very welcoming and instantly brought a bowl of water. The bar area is a smaller part of the restaurant and was quiet. Everyone who came to our table was so wonderful and friendly and patient. The food was excellent. We also had non alcoholic cocktails which were really good. We probably ordered a little too much food but the team boxed it up for us and it didn’t go to waste. The portions are definitely huge. The only tiny suggested change is the halloumi fries came in a bowl served on top of a sauce, we didn’t like the sauce so having it on the side would have been perfect! Can’t wait to return

love it here.. out of the way but lovely country pub friendly landlord and a fantastic Chinese/Thai/Malaysian restaurant at the back and they are a lovely family run business. Highly recommended

Visited with friends, a baby in a pushchair and a dog- we had prebooked and they kindly ensured we got a roomy table in the bar area. We all had a great experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was lovely with great portion sizes. The venue is always beautifully decorated for different themes eg- Halloween! We can’t wait to go back.

My first visit there and pleasantly surprised lovely atmosphere, food brilliant, had the afternoon special usually get a smaller portion but not here full plate of good heart warming food

I had wrongly thought a certain menu was available on a Saturday. However the manager checked with the kitchen and they were happy to still provide it even though I would have gone ahead with a la carte. The service was very good and the manager in particular checked to make sure if everything was ok. Food was very good especially the starter and dessert. Will definitely return.

We stayed here for our sons wedding at the adjacent Willows. Absolutely perfect day, great food and service, couldn't of been better. Topped off by a lovely nights stay and fab breakfast. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a wedding venue.

I am absolutely appalled that my table has been cancelled to to my previous visits dissatisfaction. I thought I would come again to see if my experience was better than the last. How can you as a business do that to a dissatisfied customer.. I’ll make sure I post on social media the email I received. I was given a terrible service from one of your staff members and was told she was sorry as she was having a bad day, so I thought I would give you the benefit of the doubt as we all have bad days.. but to receive this is appalling. Be sure to receive my reviews in due course **Response to your Reply,** Here we go with your overall response and complete lies. Not one person tried to rectify the issue on the day.. you guys treat me and my family so so bad but you did blame the waitress and said this does not usually happen and this is why we decided to return. I will be taking this further as your customer care is unbelievable. There is no excuse at the way your waitress spoke and treat us.. so how dare you reply with complete lies.

Food ok and service from the waiting staff was pleasant however the middle aged male member of staff was unfriendly , unpleasant and unwelcoming. Doesn’t understand the concept of hospitality. Won’t be returning and won’t be recommending.

Lovely warm and cozy restaurant and very busy for a Wednesday night ! The food was well presented and fresh and delicious ! I recommend the Tuna main course it was so good . The staff were attentive and very polite . I’ve been a few times it’s a great place to eat . It’s decorated at the entrance for Halloween and it looks great .

Had a gorgeous Sunday lunch here again ( 4th time) it was wonderful. Beautiful venue with lovely touches - decorated Halloween theme, smells clean and gorgeous. Lovely, relaxing ambience and the food is top notch… it’s the only restaurant I like better than a home cooked sun dinner! So highly recommend for friends/ family gathering. As always we were well looked after and made v welcome by lovely, attentive people- doing everything right! Well done the Woodmans team - thanks again! We will be back…

We were seated in the outdoor area which is very nice but the food and service were very disappointing. We waited half an hour for our food and had to ask for knives and forks and condiments-which consisted of salt, pepper and three sachets of ketchup. I had a plain burger with bacon and cheese, which was overcooked. The garnish was a slimy piece of lettuce and the fries were end of bag crispy bits-definitely not worth £16!

Amazing food, one of my parents is gluten free now and the staff were so helpful with the choice of food. Not a long wait time and friendly staff.

We just had a family meal out for 6 of us whilst visiting Newcastle. We asked some staff in American golf if they could reccomend anywhere and they gave us the woodman. The meal was excellent and the staff were lovely. If we didn't live 280 odd miles away this would be one of our favourite places. Make sure you book, we didn't and they did fit us in but asked that we minded having a drink first and then order the food 30 minutes later to give them a chance to serve others properly. We were happy to do that and very glad we visited. Thank you keep up the good work. Mike

A return visit after a lovely first visit. Booked for a family birthday weeks in advance. Squeezed into a table for 8 even though there were 9 of us. Sat back to back with other diners we each had to move chairs when one person needed to leave the table. One of our dinners was completely cold. The others were very disappointing. We were the first sitting and very obviously the food had been pre-prepared and reheated. Tiny portions. No mashed potato with roast dinners. One carrot and one parsnip per person!!! Yorkshire pudding so crispy it kept flying off the plate. Cauliflower cheese had to be returned as it was completely raw then came out when the rest of the lunch had been eaten. Drinks service extremely slow. Deserts- no vanilla ice cream?? Then one desert was served almost 15 minutes after the others. No apologies, although serving staff were friendly it was a really poor experience overall and certainly not worth the price. Would have expected at least the returned items removed from bill, or the very least an apology. Left with a large bill and embarassment given I suggested the visit for a special occasion based on my previous experience here. Overall such a disappointment.

The most wonderful place for a family meal. We were so well looked after; we had a large group to celebrate our daughters christening. The food was outstanding as it always is. Everyone commented on how good the food was. The service was impeccable and prompt! The communication prior to the day was simply excellent. This was our second time having a large group at the Woodmans Arms (we previously celebrated my husbands 30th birthday here) and again we were not disappointed. Thank you so much! A great spot.

Attended with 8 familk members for an 80 th birthday,booked table for 7 o clock ,took at least 15 minutes to get served with a drink.the menu was given to us and ordered .It then took approx 50 minutes to arrive,so it took around 0ne hour five minutes to get a poor meal ! . Ihad been recommend the pie with veg , it arrived and presentation was so bad I couldn't believe it !! A monstrous pie , a soup of mash and a soup of peas . The pie pastry wS so hard , anyone with false teeth would go home Hungry .I could go on but I think I've made a point !!

The restaurant is lovely,clean and smells amazing when u walk in , toilets are clean and offer toiletries which is good. The service was pretty quick when getting food out but I had to get up and ask for more drinks and also condiments not a lot of staff around so had to was hard to find someone. Food was average my husband had Thai chicken curry which was very bland and hardly any sauce although I asked for some extra sauce which was fine and I had fish and chips which the fish was a bit over cooked and no taste chips were nice . May not be back for a while as feel not value for money in the quality of the food.

Sunday lunch 17 September 2023 When we arrived the Woodmans arms Whickham looked amazing. We had a table booked for 4pm. We took our seats and placed our order. Starters King prawns , which arrived and they were piping hot Garlic mushrooms , which arrived and they were almost cold with no taste of garlic. I spoke to the waiter who said sorry with no offer to replace them or reduce price. Mains 2 x beef brisket dinners. These were hot , thank goodness but we were given kale as a vegetable, it was not nice and the dinners were tasteless. I had originally ordered the pork but then was told thy didn't have any left. Dessert Chocolate delice, which was nice Apple crumble with custard , the custard was like warm and the pastry base was really hard. The cost of the meal including 2 x pints Aspall and 2 x diet Pepsi cams to just under £84 Totally overpriced for a rubbish meal. We will never go back to this place. The Coachman also in Whickham is far better. The meals are excellent always hot , the staff are friendlier and they have live music as entertainment and the bill there is £23 cheaper. Lovely pub just outside whickham. We love to walk our dog then drop in for a drink and she is always made welcome.

Went for a meal and really liked that we were able to bring the dog with us! Staff were really friendly and accommodating and the food was tasty. We had the pie and the lamb and both were very nice. Only comment would be that it is very expensive for what is essentially pie and mash! The place is lovely but perhaps a tad overpriced for the area

Very very disappointed 😔 I had heard excellent things and the food pictures on Instagram looked amazing so drove over from Heaton for a spot of lunch, asked for no tomatoes on sandwich but got them anyway and the sandwich looks nothing at all like it does on Instagram nor is it what it states on menu it claims to be sourdough bread however arrived as a small panini 1 slice of cheese and a x2 slice tomato. Unfortunately will not return as just seems to be smoke and mirrors and not worth the money one bit 😔 photos below of what I got compared to what they are claiming the give

Went for Sunday lunch. The whole lunch was lovely. The meat was tender. The staff were great and attentive and couldn't do enough. Afterwards, I chose the sticky toffee pudding, which was lush. It's not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. Would highly recommend 👌

I had the best gluten free meal here! It was two courses for £10 and they were massive! I was stuffed. The best chips ive ever eaten too. The place is really quirky and cool, I'm definitely coming back for another visit. Staff were all friendly too, really helpful. Honestly a hidden little gem this place.

Wonderfully designed pub with more than fairly priced specials. For was good. Service excellent.

Went for the restaurant week offer and really feel ripped off with the starter. Belly pork starter but no piece of belly pork only - a few scraps of bacon fat hidden under a pile of carrot shavings and hoi-sin sauce. My wife's main course was the linguine which was just huge pile of stodgy pasta enough for 4 with a thin tomato sauce and some ok chicken breast. My main was nice which was fish gujons but really feel conned by the starter I got. Really was a game of spot the belly pork - see attached photo.

Returned today for Sunday lunch and £15 gets you a generous roast dinner. I opted for the lamb and it was superb. Only visited for lunch but well impressed with the whole set up. Ample free parking, outside seating area which is lit and heated for cooler days/nights. Inside to a really nice welcome and it is something else, rustic and smart with log fires and plenty of seating. It was slightly let down by my steak being overcooked (ordered medium/well got very well done) but all in all a tasty well priced lunch Would i recommend and return? Definitely 👍

Unreal pub, great staff, food and atmosphere!

This place is a joke Sunday lunch was terrible roast potatoes were horrible ordered apple crumble with custard crumble was served in a pastry case about 2 1/2 inches never found any apple and custard was look warm 3 of the party ordered a sticyktoffe pudding served in a tall glass which didn't have any toffee in it and my partner had to remind them for hers had to keep asking for cutlery will never go back

We visited without booking for Sunday lunch, as we hadn't booked there were no tables available but we were asked if we minded sitting in the outdoor seating area which was nice and cosy, we ordered 1 chicken and one lamb Sunday lunch which came fairly promptly and was a nice portion of meat Yorkshire pudding mashed swede and roasties along with a small dish of Broccoli and cabbage, BUT when we started to eat it was Bearley warm as it was served on cold plates, we tucked in anyway as no staff were about when a young chap came to clear the table I mentioned to him to which he replied its because you are outside I said no the plates were cold to which he shrugged his shoulders and walked off ! I don't think we will return as there are lots of other places around.

Last minute first time visit, three drink and food orders served promptly with a smile. Food tasted nice, no complaints from anyone; also reasonably priced. Would definitely return.

Probably the worst Sunday lunch I’ve ever had, picked up for collection, ordered the slow roasted beef brisket and lamb shoulder. We asked for extra roasties, extra Yorkshire puddings and extra gravy with our meals. Service was ok. We live about a 5/10 minute drive...

Fantasic variety of food, which was flavourful and filling! The staff were really kind and helpful. The deco of the restaurant was INCREDIBLE and the atmosphere was nice too. We got the hoisin duck chips which was sticky, sweet and tasty, same for the boa buns. Curry, burger and pizza for the mains. The portions are excellent and all the flavours spot on. The cheesecake and eton mess were light and tasty. And the sticky toffee a good mix of sweet and filling.

Absolutely brilliant place for food. The service was speedy and the staff were so polite and played along my nieces jokes. My parents loved their sunday dinners and my niece ate the entire of her pizza! (she doesn't normally!)

Beautiful venue, gorgeous decor and delicious food!! Lovely helpful staff too! My only criticism, a waiter (who hadn't served us previously) brought the bill (we were 4 families) he lingered for ages making jokes about who was the unlucky one having to pay...it just made things awkward. Other than that blip, everyone loved their food and we'll definitely return.

Quite out of the way, but the food is great and the staff were all very polite/professional. I'd definitely go more often if it was closer
