We’re here for the week, came to the Woodmans for dinner on Saturday night and ended up coming back again on Tuesday. Some of the best pub food we have had, the Cajun chicken burger is to die for, as is the steak and frites and the pork belly starter. Just absolutely delicious, fresh, generous portions and great service. Highly recommended.

Went here as we were visiting the steam railway. Its a short walk up the hill. The pub is very clean and the staff are friendly. The food was fresh and tasty. We had lasagne and my husband enjoyed a steak. All presented beautifully and tasted perfect. Perfect meal to our day out on the trains.

We looked on line and it said the pub shut at 10.30pm. We walked along from the Cedars as it was in our way back to out cottage. It wasn't even 9.30pm. The Pub was shut. Very annoying. We should have stayed in the Cedars. We had a meal in the Woodmans. Nice but expensive. Going to The Cedars from now on!

Tuesday night in early July, 7pm. Not overly busy. Very pleasant staff, in fact really pleasant, Just not that on it. Food was really good, good quality and quantity, reasonably priced too. But there were 9 tables occupied, and the service generally (not the food service which was quick) was, well it was lacking. Waited 15 mins after the bill had arrived to pay and in the end had to go to the bar to seek someone out to pay. When the height of summer arrives and all those tables in the very well appointed garden are full I’d hope the service game will to be upped. It was only the service that let it down, really good otherwise.

Dropped in for lunch, and met with friendly staff. We chose two meals from the specials board, I had the curry, my wife the pork, both meals were fine, and very flavoursome. They are obviously short of staff, as we requested the menu for a sweet, and then sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to take our order. We were told it was table service when we entered the bar, but after the said 20 minutes decided to pay our bill and left. Staff need to be more attentive.

Really nice little pub, very well located for the Fishbourne - Portsmouth ferry. Family run pub with friendly and helpful staff. We're a family of gourmet who went for Sunday lunch. Food plentiful and tasty. Three of us went for the largest portion roast lunch that they do and it was enormous! Despite it being well prepared and tasty, none of us could finish it. You need a really big appetite or don't have a starter! I'd happily recommend this pub snd we will happily return.

We tried to visit this pub earlier in the week when we visited the steam railway but didn't realize that the food wasn't served all day. It looked a nice place so we were determined to return. Already left a review in June this year and after another meal here today I felt it only right to say that it is every bit as good on a second visit; lovely food, friendly service and a great atmosphere in that every table was occupied yet it was apparent that the service was friendly toward all despite being a very busy Sunday lunchtime. The only sad point was the weather restricting being able to go out into the lovely garden area this time after our meal but that is a minor thing! This time we both had the salmon, new potatoes and salad with honey and mustard dressing and it was absolutely delicious. Will certainly be returning and highly recommend to anyone thinking of dropping in as even the bar area was as well-occupied as the restaurant. A well-deserved high score on here and a really pretty pub with wonderful food....all anyone needs for a treat from home or a drop-in on your hols!

Three of us ate here on Sunday at lunch time. Service is friendly and efficient. The two of us who had roast beef (you can choose a large or a small roast) were very pleased with our generous meals, as indeed was the third member of our group, who chose "Greek lamb" ( lamb steak with feta cheese). Garlic mushrooms as a starter were excellent, an imaginative variation on the usual mushrooms in a dish with garlic sauce.). Two of us had king prawns in filo pastry - again, imaginatively served, and delicious. Eating here, seated in one of the window bays looking out at the garden is a lovely experience. Fully deserving of 5 stars.

Quite expensive for what was an 'ordinary' meal. Toilets were cramped with the baby changing facility. Not a very welcoming atmosphere. Maybe it would have been better if we had booked but we had just followed the directions given outside Wootton station. One of us had lamb's liver but it had been very overcooked and was black on the edges. The apple pie seemed to have come from a freezer, to a fridge, to our plates. Tasted as though it needed cooking as the pastry appeared 'raw'? They did make a small deduction from the bill but no real apology given. :(

Handy pub that's only a few minutes easy walk away if you find yourself at a loose end in Wootton before or after a trip on the local Steam Railway. It's slightly bigger than it may appear from the road; looks like a dining room extension has been added at some time to the back of the more conventional pub area. All very bright, open and airy, with some very evocative artex-style walls and ceilings in the main room. The specific dining area seemed quite popular, although my pals and I easily found a table opposite the bar at prime weekday lunch time. Clientele throughout very much on the mature side.No funny business on the menu, all dishes staunchly conventional and very familiar. Food arrived pretty swiftly after ordering, and my scampi and chips was perfectly functional. I did like the effort to make the accompanying well-dressed salad more visually interesting, and the perfect cherry tomatoes were especially tasty. My pals had chili con carne, and ham eggs and chips. Not dishes to generate a frisson of excitement but, on the other hand, everything was consumed so there can be no complaints. Subsequently spotted a reference to "specials" on a blackboard (out of our line of vision) by the dining room but nothing was mentioned when ordering. We were on pints during whilst in situ and there was an ample well-kept selection of real ale to keep us lubricated.Staff were friendly and efficient, and it's always nice to get a cheerful welcome when you're not a local.Worth a safe-option visit.

Starters have changed to basically a plate of garnish and the onion rings taste like there from Iceland and the so called cheesy garlic bread well terrible there was more greated cheese on the napkin melted so u couldn't even pick to add to the garlic bread. We took a ride on the Steam Railway which was a delight. I saw that a pub was marked at the end of the line, at Wooton, on the OS Tourist map. A Station volunteer said she'd 'had no bad reports' (!) so we walked up the Station Road. Pub was clean and unfussy. A draft beer was recommended and was good. The menu included Liver and Bacon, with potato mash, peas and a tasty gravy. We chose a 'pensioner's portion', (we fit the description). It was generous and fine for a lunch. The dish was freshly cooked, tasty and in all, everything you might want.

My girlfriend and I have been here a few times, for diners and breakfasts. We've generally been quite impressed. The breakfasts are quite big and so a good value. The steak for dinner wasn't the best quality, but it was cooked to perfection. I had it with the surf and turf and the scampi came on a skewer with lemon chunks, which looked pretty cool and the scampi took on the flavour very well and was delicious. The gammon has been a favourite too as it isn't too salty like gammon can be, instead it's fully of meaty flavours. The service was fair to good everytime we've been and I do enjoy a pub that let's you have a taste of the ales before you choose which one to order. They seem to always be trying to improve it too. Would 100% recommend to anyone in the area.Only 4/5 because of oven chips, not the best desert menu, old grubby toilets and few nitty-gritty points along those lines.

Ok. Very quiet when we arrived - about 2pm on a Monday. There's 5 of us and we are on holiday on the island. The locals rate this pub and I can see why. We can't comment on the beers etc. but the food was delightful. The menu caters for appetites of all shapes and sizes, starters, light bites, more trad gastro pub fare, fish dishes - then there's a specials board to tempt too. The mixed grill pictured was mine. A habit. I can never decide what to go for meat wise, so there you go. That's a large one. It's as big as it looks! And do bear in mind that the meat is locally sourced. It was beautifully cooked too. All of it. Three of us went for burgers; these are 7oz and come as you are, or you can add a range of sides or toppings. Special mention for the chips! Thick cut and crispy outer, fluffy inner. Chippy awesomeness. The Woodmans Arms isn't part of a chain. You can tell too, the produce stands out. It took me a while to savour my way through the moist butterfly chicken breast, two herby pork sausages, spot on steak and gammon steak... So everyone else had dessert too. The choice was broad, plus a range of ice creams. Given that my meal was £22, (no argument from me!) the total of £80-ish for five meals, 4 desserts and drinks was pretty good. Happy family.

We were staying in Wootton so had decided to visit the Woodman Arms while we were there having heard good reports. Three of us were eating there and of the three I was the one most disappointed with the meal. Both my wife and son ate from the main menu and this seems to have been the best choice. Particularly, my son's steak was excellent and the chips outstanding. I tried something more adventurous from the specials board and I have to say that this seems to have been a mistake. If I was basing the review on this dish alone, it would not rate more than two stars. I had bacon wrapped pork fillet stuffed with apple, with a port and mushroom sauce. It reads better than it eats. The sauce was odd having a rather strange glutinous quality. The pork seemed a little overcooked, whilst the bacon was soft and limp. Surprising that both could be achieved, but this was the case.We ate early and the service was OK. A little slow so at busier times this could be a problem.

The steak was requested medium rare and was delivered medium but was good in flavour and little fat/gristle. The gammon steak on the other hand was very fatty and the chicken was just a piece of chicken I'd expect from MacD's!Do not question the English mustard that is served as apparently that is what it is! I am yet to purchase English mustard myself that tastes exactly the same as American mustard!!Overall the staff were neither friendly nor arrogant and the food was ok'ish.Wouldn't be visiting again so if you visit with little expectations you won't be disappointed!

The first two times we managed to luckily arrive and get a table but booked on the third night as it was a Friday and expected it to be busy. We were right but still a very enjoyable meal. We were informed that we would have to wait 30 minutes for our meal which was fine. The other two evenings had excellent service too. We tried a variety of meals but my favourite has to be the mushroom stroganoff. If you have a big appetite then the mixed grill is the way to go. The choice of desserts is also plentiful. We selected this pub as it had good reviews. Lovely setting. Big garden with children's area. Inside clean with friendly staff. Menu classic pub menu. Wednesday steak night at a really good price. Plenty to eat. Good value for money.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here last week. The portion sizes were generous and staff very friendly. Food arrived quickly which is always a plus! Lovely outside area to sit and play area for children too.

We stopped off for some food at the end of a great day out. The staff were very helpful and the food and drink were really nice. There were plenty of customers enjoying the food and the place had a very relaxed fealing to it. The play area out the back was great for our two little ones and we could keep an eye on them whilst we finnished our food. Would definitely recommend it.

Even giving a couple of days notice we could not get a table on Saturday so we gathered The Woodman Arms was popular. We changed our plans to the Friday evening and even then they just fitted us in. When we had such a superb meal at a reasonable price we understood why the demand. We will certainly call again next time we are on the wonderful Isle of Wight

We met a friend for lunch, but were disappointed by the slow service. When the food finally turned up it was ok, but nothing special. We ordered a coffee at the same time as the dessert, but it never materialized.

This establishment has a lot going for it but let's itself down in other areas. The pub has its own large car park and a lovely well kept outside area including a children's play area. Entry to the pub is directly from the car park but the entry door frame and glass are very dirty and do not create a good first impression. The meals are satisfactory but nothing more than average. Prices are about what you would expect to pay. The table had been cleaned with a dirty cloth and was covered in dry grubby streaks. Service was very good although staff wearing jeans and different casual tops did not endear itself to an establishment serving food. The Woodman's arms has a lovely location and helpful staff but they need to up their game with regards to the food given some of the local competition who are providing better meals at similar prices. Not a bad experience by any means and will try there again in the near future.

Having arrived on a Friday for a long weekend decided to book for dinner. Reviews looked quite good for this pub but I have to say we were quite disappointed.Restaurant was quite empty and the waitress didn't look exactly happy to be there.Starter of pate came with one slice of burnt toast, a prawn cocktail made with the smallest pawns I've ever seen. Main of cottage pie tested ok but looked like sloppy school dinner sitting in a gravy puddle. Gammon looked good though. Pear crumble was stodgy, tasteless and pretty inedible. I wont be bothering again.

Not a great choice. The omelette I had was so burnt it had to be returned. Would really only choose here if there were no other option

Great welcome, good menu, speedy and friendly service. Children's left overs were put into take away containers to be taken home and enjoyed later. The children very much enjoyed the well built climbing frame with slide and swings. We have rarely received such a warm reception. We will certainly visit again.

we popped in here on the off chance and its my new favourite place! The kids really enjoyed playing outside while we waited for the food. The stew was cooked to perfection, and I already want the dumplings again! great kids menu and a decent size too.

On arrival the staff were very welcoming and helpful. We were asked if we were going to be eating, and once we confirmed this, where shown to an available table and given a menu. Food was good pub grub, and was served quickly. The portion size was generous and the food was freshly cooked. I had the chicken burger, which contained a fresh piece of butterfly chicken, which was very tasty. The atmosphere was relaxed and felt like a local pub but new visitors are made to feel welcome. Will definitely be returning and recommending to family and friends.

All the food is freshly cooked, and they have an extensive menu. If you are a pensioner and cannot eat a full meal they do a seniors menu which also includes a cup of tea or coffee and there about 10 different choices.

We called in here for lunch on my wife's birthday. There was a great choice on the menu, and the food when served was brilliant. We both had meals that included chips and they were to die for, big thick, chunky and crisp. The choice of draught beer was good and the staff were attentive without being intrusive. All in all a first class experience Thank you.

Visited the Woodmans Arms for a family birthday today and had a great time. A good range of real ale as and a warm welcome. Service was prompt and the food plentiful and hot. The Chilli Con Carne was lovely and spicy and the liver and bacon a huge portion but could have been rarer and with another rasher and more onion gravy.A good place for lunch.

We ate here as a family of 4 (2 kids aged 6&9) - we had tacos, kids nuggets & sausage & mash, and chicken burger - the portions were large, and they catered for French fries, even though it stated fat cut chips on the menu. Overall average pub grub & looked like they appealed to the 'older' generation...

My husband and i ate here during our stay on the Isle of White and the food was perfect, maybe the prices are a little high, however the quality absolutely justified it.We was in a rush leaving due to bus times and wanted to thank the chef personally, but unfortunately didn't get the chance. When we left we saw a young tattooed woman come out the kitchen and speak to a staff member, if she is the chef then i hope the message gets to her that i was very happy!Thank you

This place is famous for its views across the Solent, but only in the summer. In the winter the windows are always steamed up giving you near to no visibility outside. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good and average prices for the area. Drinks were more expensive than the Seaview Hotel just around the corner. +£1 per drink on gin & tonic. It was November on a Friday evening and all tables were reserved. We did sit at one of their best tables for our drink ‘Captain Ted’s Table’ and it was wobbly as hell. Felt like it was going to give way at any time. Come on this is an easy fix.

We have been here many times over the years and looked forward to our visit again this year. What a disappointment. We had a cream tea which consisted of a pot of tea, 2 scones, butter, cream and jam. The jam and cream pots were half the size they used to be and the butter was barely there, adequate enough for one scone but certainly not two. The jug of milk supplied did not have enough milk for one cup of tea and we had to ask for extra. I do not drink tea and asked for my tea to be substituted with coffee, big mistake, it was undrinkable. Went we went to pay we were told 'cash only' and I was lucky to find some cash in the bottom of my bag. This should be made clear when you enter and before you order as a lot of people do not carry cash. Our experience was so different to every other visit we wondered if there were 'new owners' but overheard the owner telling other visitors that she had been there 17 years. Sadly will not be returning.
