Minor food poisoning right after having their steamboat buffet. The fish fillets are at its worst quality as it seems like being left in the fridge for ‘years’ and the meat slices are so smelly. The hygiene of the shop is not doing well and the ventilation is bad as well. Think twice before harming your body!

Reading the enthusiastic reviews I can only assume Wongs has gone right down in the last few months. The food was appalling. The four of us ordered the set menu. All the starter dishes were cold or lukewarm. The wontons had no filling whatsoever and were cooked in fat well past its best. The spare ribs were very fatty and in a lurid shop bought sauce. The seaweed was so sweet you couldn't eat it.For the main dish we had the Peking duck, that was OK but the duck was cold. We asked it be warmed and it came back fractionally less cold. The services was appalling. The restaurant itself was freezing cold no heating at all. I ate virtually nothing. They did give us a 5% discount. I have worked in Chinese restaurants myself and I always tip but not this time. We were the only diners, surprise, surprise. If you want a cheapish Chinese you can eat go to the Mayfair a few doors down.

Looks, from the outside and even in it looks a bit rough and ready. Also its not your typical Chinese this is something far more authentic. Clientele, mainly Chinese workers and students, so must be good. Menu, great choice and if your not sure waiting staff are able to help guide you. A lot of the customers were tucking into hot pot bowls so I opted for the same with a side of dumplings. Wonderful, flavoursome and filling (especially on a very cold night). Great value too, you eat well for less than £20. A great find.

If you want a taste of real Chinese food, this is the place to go. You can choose from three distinct styles of food. - The usual 'British style' Chinese food - Authentic Chinese dishes from Canton, Szechuan and Northern China - Chinese 'hotpot' All of the food is well presented and high quality. The fact that most of the clientele are Asian gives a clue as to the quality and authenticity of the dishes. Service is relaxed and friendly. The Staff are Chinese speakers' but are fluent in English. If you want help to choose they are more than willing to guide you through the menu and suggest suitable dishes. I can honestly say I have eaten some of the best Chinese food I have ever tasted here. Don't be put off by the distinctly Chinese atmosphere ... be brave - taste a bit of real China.

Wonderfully authentic Chinese flavours that excite my tastebuds! They do a mix of Cantonese and Szechuan dishes but I would say they are more specialized in Northern Chinese cuisine than Cantonese food. On both visits here, I noticed the clients were mainly Chinese students. The wait staff speak fluent Chinese but broken English, keep that in mind. Otherwise no complaints about the service. If you want to experience some real Chinese food, come here!

Since many of Wong's customers (so friends tell me and by my own observation) are from the Oriental communities in Nottingham its likely that the cuisine here is reasonably authentic and of a good quality. As a group we really enjoyed the sweetcorn soup and the fried rice that came with our main dishes was glutinous and delicious (amongst the best I have had in the UK) but the other dishes (mostly vegetarian which may not be their strength) were not exciting. The rules for the eat what you like for £X were confusing and the staff though smiley were also confused and a bit amateurish. I note that other reviewers seems to have had a better time, and we tried Wong's on the recommendation of friends who speak highly of it, so as its not expensive and I had the sense that people were trying to please I shall not be put off giving this restaurant another try!

Stubborn bloody English..... If you have the same dish everyone or like to order your Chinese by reading out the choice number then you probably shouldn't to eat here. Here is for folks who are happy to take a leap into the unknown or were born in the Far East (always a good sign when the restaurant is packed with the folk who know their stuff). This was the second visit for our hosts who had seen customers essentially cooking their own food and were keen for us to have a go too. I think it is fair to say the chap who showed us to our table was not enamoured by our wish to do this. I think I know why. Read on dear reader. To say our table at the end was reminiscent of a table a stroppy toddler objecting strenuously to eating their vegetables and noodles had frequented was not far if the mark. We'd been mucky pups. Our order was random and all encompassing, with the chap in the teddy bear cap ticking Chinese symbols randomly on his menu. We were innocents abroad at his mercy and totally in his hands. The three of the five of us "having a go" moved around so we could access the bubbling pot which had a spicy and a not so spicy broth in it (both bloody spicy) and were were directed as to what the multitude of meats, curds and noodles were on the embarrassingly large platter that arrived. We then all got stuck in dunking and leaving these items in the broth so they cooked (or as close to cooked as we thought looked right) and then scooping them out and scoffing them. Fantastic. So, to summarise, and I hesitate to tell you dear reader but will that I am on the white throne for the 4th time (this being the morning after). See, what the teddy bear capped guy was trying to do was save us (me). The food was delightfully spicy and a spicy broth was only ever going to have one effect. Go, immerse yourself, be brave and stand up for you rights to order for you can't handle. I've had my lesson, now I'll go again a little more educated.

We have been to Wong's twice now and both times had an incredibly tasty Chinese meal at an extremely reasonable price. They do an 'all you can eat' option for £13.90 which is fantastic. Instead of visiting a buffet where the food has been sitting under bright lights getting nasty, they make your buffet to order. So you choose 3 or 4 starters, then they bring you duck, then you choose 2 or 3 mains and rice/noodles.m At any stage, you can ask them to bring more. This works really well: the customer gets freshly prepared food and I am sure there is less wastage for the kitchen. As with most of the establishments on Mansfield Road, this is not a fancy restaurant. It's pretty rough round the edges, the toilets are basic to say the least, and the heating seemed to be supplied by blow heaters; but if you want tasty Chinese food, this restaurant is just fantastic. When it first opened, the restaurant seemed to be struggling for business, but now it is always busy with lots of Chinese students and locals alike. Try it before everyone finds out and the price goes up!!!
