no dulce y amargo aquí.

Don't come here if you are looking for "Roast Chicken Chinese Style and a Special Chop Suey". Noodle King caters extensively to the local Chinese population and the food is very similar to what I have had when travelling out in that part of the world. This means some chicken dishes are severed chopped with bones in, some dishes are offal based and so on. If in doubt ask...

Ella gritó no! dicho U llevar!

My friends invited me to this modest looking establishment. They have decided not to have children and to spend their money on the good things in life which includes eating out every evening. Their normal types of venues being Harts, Chino Latino, World Service, Ibireco etc. I thought they had lost their marbles when we arrived. They ordered for me and ordered one course at a time so that the mains did not arrive before the starters. We had spare ribs with salt and pepper, chicken wings and the mixed seafood platter. The starters were enough to make me realise that this place was extraordinary. One waitress who wore thick round glasses talked to me throughout the first course in maandarin, perhaps she thought I was chinese. While she was still talking I popped to the loo and when I returned she was still talking to my empty chair. Curious. She then went to the owner and pointed at me whilst whispering in his ear.

I'm a hong kong local, so bubble tea is just a comfort food from home, it's almost become a necessity! Now I can get it fresh all the time! The food looks amazing here and I can't wait to try it out!

I have to say that we were invited here and hosted by two Chinese friends who chose the dishes.... so if you decide to go, follow the good advice from other reviewers about what to choose and what not to......What did I like? The range of food and the quality. The food reminded us of our trips to restaurants in China and was amongst the best we have eaten in the UK. We enjoyed a sweet and sour fish dish, a spicy beef hot-pot, char siu (?) pork, lobster, vegetables, Singapore style noodle and rice. All good. The service was good too. The staff seem happy working together. The melamine tables make for a clean functionality, which I like. What I did not like: the pancakes to go with our shredded crispy duck.My verdict?: we will go again. It is good value. The Chinese students love it, apparently it is the most recommended on the Chinese language student network for Nottingham.Would I expect anyone to like it? No. It is not good for a romantic dinner. You would not impress a business client here, unless they knew China. A big occasion is not the time to "celebrate" here. Just go for clean service, good food and the company you take with youBut it beats May Sum and Peechy Keans any day of the week, and has a similar price position - much better value (but not a self serve buffet where you stuff yourself stupid)

This is easily one of my favourite places for lunch and I find myself with a hunger pang that can only be satisfied by a Noodle King "Big plate rice" about twice a month.I knew it was going to be good when its windows were filled with signs announcing "Noddle King Openning Soon", right across the road from my favourite (and sadly missed) record shop. From their humble beginnings where they took only cash payments and it was BYO wine (they only carged £1.50 "conkage") they've come quite a long way and it seems the menu has grown. And I shouldn't be unfair with my friendly jests...my Cantonese is hardly up to scratch and error spotting on their menu has become a favourite pre-meal past time (I've yet to try their new Chinese Flower Bums).Others have said you that what you order can make the difference between a great visit or a bad visit. The first part of the menu is divided up into "Big plate of noodles" dishes (a long list to choose from, and options for noodle type), "Big plate of rice" dishes (same sort of thing) and "Big bowl soup" dishes (again with a choice of noodle type). If you're not feeling massively adventurous the following are always a winner..- Chicken Satay Sauce with Vermicelli Noodles (the satay isn't like the peanutty one you might be familiar with)- Kung Po Chicken with Fried Rice- Shredded Pork with Sea Spicy Sauce and HoFun Noodles- Three roasties with Soup Udon Noodles- Beef in XO Sauce with Fried RiceAVOID the following if you're not versed in what to expect:- Chinese style noodles. These aren't what you'd expect...they're like Super Noodles, albeit a lot better and chinese style but not exactly posh.- Crispy noodles. Imagine the above but deep fried instead of boiled. A member of our party had these- Beef brisket. Personally I love it but it's very fatty and many might not enjoy.Their spare ribs starter is also brilliant. I'm not usually a fan but the portion you get for £4.50 is enourmous (in fact, all their portions of everything are enourmous). If you like a bit of a spicy edge to your food ask for some of the chilli oil which comes with chilli flakes...it's not as hot as it sounds but adds a gorgeous spicy and earthy flavour to your food. I love the fact there's plenty of dishes on the menu that have no English translation given...I just need to pluck up the courage to investigate what some of them are and try them as some of the things I've seen delievered to the tables of many Chiense students who are a permanent fixture of the restaurant look incredible and totally new to me.The booze is expensive, but as I'm here for lunch I usually opt for a coke or a pot of green tea.As people have said, the restaurant is very basic and lacks any atmosphere. Melamine tables, sparse decoration and paper serviettes are the order of the day and the service is adequate and polite although sometimes in broken English. This isn't a problem, however, as it's not trying to be anything different. It's not a place to take a date or guests for a special meal out but if you're out casually with a few friends or your partner and need a quick, lovely and inexpensive meal you can't fault it.They do takeout (which seems very popular with a lot of the businesses and shops around Hockley) and I believe they have Karaoke booths upstairs. Perhaps some will find that useful to know. I, however, will remain in the restaurant.

Noodle King is a dreadful name for a chinese restaurant. However, the food is stunning! This is home-style chinese cooking and include a huge range of northern chinese and schezaun options that you won't find anywhere else in nottingham. The restaurant is very popular with nottingham's chinese students (and lots of other people too). Beware, however, the portions are huge, so plan to share when your order, or prepare to be overwhelmed. This is one of the most interesting and best value restaurants in Nottingham.

Perfectly adequate, but what seemed to me to be unremarkable British-style chinese food. Maybe there are hidden delights on the menu that were lost on me

As I've mentioned in the title of my post, choose the right dishes and you will find that Noodle King is a pretty good restaurant to enjoy Chinese style meals. For those of you who have not been there before, and are reading this page in hope of gaining some insight into this restaurant, I'd suggest you close the page and head straight there. It's not a restaurant that serves Hong Kong Cantonese style dishes. They serve various other styles such as Shanghainese etc. So don't expect to see 'chee cheong fun' and 'dimsum' and all of that in this place. Instead, try other delicacies such as roast duck and crispy roast pork. I'm a person of Chinese descent from Malaysia, and I can assure you that their roasted meats are worth trying. I know what is and what is not Chinese style when I see and taste it. Try the "preserved vegetable and shredded duck vermicelli". It's one of my all time favourites from Noodle King. It is in such dishes that the skills of the cook really shines. Not in the typical Westernized takeaway style egg fried rice. No. All that stuff which you obtain from takeaways are not authentic at all. (Sorry guys... but takeaway food ISN"T Chinese food AT ALL) There is NO such thing as sesame prawn toast in Chinese food vocab. Those going to Malaysia and ordering such toasts will end up becoming laughing stocks of local Chinese restaurants. You might want to avoid such s sticky scenario. ;)Sorry for digressing. Anyhow, it's a great restaurant. You're there for the food. The RIGHT food that is. Not for the service, not for the environment. It's the FOOD. In Chinese culture, food counts, not the environment. So if you want to dine in a Chinese restaurant hoping for authentic Chinese food, then think like a Chinese and just eat!Happy exploring people. Best wishes.

I would not say that it serves authentic Chinese food.....far far far far away from it. Even the worst cook in China would have done better than the chef working in this restaurant. I ordered a wok fried hor fun with roast duck and before I could even taste the food when it arrives, I knew it was not going to be good just by the looks of it....and I was right! My husband ordered a bowl of chinese noodle with wantan and it didn't taste good either. Service was average and no value for money. I certainly would not recommend anyone to this restaurant.

This restaurant could be described as the Chinese refrectory of Nottingham University. We've been a few times now and it seems that students arrive, eat a main course and leave quickly - some only staying 20 minutes. It's a stereotype, but that would indicate that the food is genuinely Chinese, and this feeling is emphasized by the prepared ducks hanging in the window. If you are adventurous you will enjoy the food experience here; if you go expecting take away style sweet and sour and chow mein you won't enjoy it.My missus had what is described as 'a large bowl of soup' with seafood and they are certainly true to their word. It's tasty and well prepared but after all the interesting ingredients are gone it quickly gets monotonous with the result that a large amount of noodles went uneaten. Crispy chilli beef, duck with mushrooms and egg fried rice were really top class. The prices for these dishes are reasonable.I have a MAJOR problem being charged 3.95 for a glass of rubbish white wine. It could be argued that they are not used to it etc., but when it's not shown in the menu that is a serious rip off. The atmosphere is absolutely zero and the decoration could chraritably be described as minimalist, ie none. Some of the staff know us from other visits so they are friendly; I'd certainly describe the service as effecient but not really polished.Nottingham has a vibrant, growing restaurant scene and while Noodle King adds another dimension to it they have some serious competition. So next time we'll be ordering takeaway.

A warm welcome at the door, catered for our larger than normal group, beers to the table and orders taken with typical chinese efficiency. We dabbled in each others food for variety but personally the Mussels in Black Bean sauce were out of this world. 6 huge mussels smothered in black beans sauce that I can only describe as the best sauce I have tasted to date. For main I had Beef in Hot Chilli sauce and again a huge portion of rice topped with thinly sliced beef in hot chilli sauce, heaven.I would definitely recommend to anyonw wanting an authentic chinese meal. At about a £10 per head quality for money too.

I love asian/oriental food as i live abroad in Singapore. Went there with my partner and it only seems to have recently opened. Recently just had stomach surgery so can only eat mainly fluids and soft food so i decided to go for the WonTon soup at £2.50. So disappointed with a small bowl filled with 4 wontons. When i told them of the situation they said you can order a larger bowl with 10 wontons at £5.00. My partner spoke to them in Cantonese so translation was accurate. My partner had 3 meat soup and the soup tasted like soap water. The meat was not any better, the duck seemed tasty but the char siu and the crispy pork was bland and nothing crispy about the pork.As a caucasian i could have cooked better noodle soup and be more tasteful than the blandness we found here. Even you could from a packet!!!They were only taking cash because they said the bank has not given them any terminals for cards. To be honest save your money and go to the other chinese/japanese restaurants nearby. You got to be choosy in this economic climate. There was no welcoming or warmth from the staff. Before, during or after.Ok these people don't get paid alot but they have to earn their tips and i always tip. On this occasion i didn't.

It's an experience. Automatically added 10% service charge to the bill. They took an order and brought drinks, rice, and raw meat to the table. Food was cooked to perfection (by us). Service charge wasn't paid.

Minor food poisoning right after having their steamboat buffet. The fish fillets are at its worst quality as it seems like being left in the fridge for ‘years’ and the meat slices are so smelly. The hygiene of the shop is not doing well and the ventilation is bad as well. Think twice before harming your body!
