Situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, this is a truly magnificent place to visit. We've been a few times and always enjoy great food, wonderful atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. It has a terrific bar and separate restaurant, caters for everyone and is very popular with the walking community. Being disabled I come with my own set of problems which the management and staff have absolutely no difficulty coping with. It's a place where I feel safe and as such my wife can relax. If you haven't been you're missing out!

Visited here after a walk out on the Yorkshire Wolds with the dogs. Half of the pub is dog friendly and the other half is for those without their furry friends. Very nice food served, all in good time and piping hot! Friendly staff too, more than willing to chat about the local area and the weather. Excellent place - we will be returning in the future!

Superb quality food, great service in lovely surroundings. Well worth a visit. We popped in for lunch (phoning ahead first just to make sure there was space), we both ended up going for the pork chops as they sounded very interesting. See pictures of the menu. Craft beer was superb and we thought overall very reasonably priced for this level of dining. We will be back!

Based on our experience dining here twice during our stay in Huggate for a family holiday, it seems to us that the older and poorer reviews were taken on board by the owners. The menu was well thought out, with some subtle twists on common pub food - as well as some fully traditional ones. We felt the prices were lower than the quality of the meals reflected, and our first visit had us book again for a second visit, we didn’t even think of finding somewhere else. We had a range of meals, from wagyu burgers to chicken burgers, salmon fillets to fish and chips and steak. We couldn’t fault any of them, a genuinely lovely experience and staff who were attentive without being over the top. We’d certainly come back again if ever in the area.

On the plus side, this is a great pub in a lovely area, plenty of atmosphere and serving staff are friendly and efficient; and a fairly good wine list compared to a lot of local pubs. However, we went with friends who like it "cheap and cheerful". It says "pub grub" and that is what you get - scampi, gammon, steak pie, deep fried fish etc. My starter of garlic mushrooms was very good, but my main of Hunters Chicken was so dry I wondered if it was bought in pre-cooked and then microwaved. If I did the cooking here, I would have a Specials Menu and/or a Fish of the Day to make it more interesting than boring "pub grub". When I go out I like to eat food which is at least as good as I can cook at home and I am afraid that this isn't the case here. I know people like cheap food, but they could charge more for "specials" which would encourage a wider clientele.

My wife and I are doing the coast to coast cycle route from Bridlington to Morecambe. The Wolds Inn is a convenient 35 miles into the trip so we decided to stop there. The welcome we received was lovely and warm, the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The room was small but the bed was very comfortable, absolutely no complaints. I have read some reviews on here complaining about portion size. My evening meal, ham, egg and delicious homemade chips was enough to satisfy. The breakfast however was enormous and set me up for a full days cycling. See the photo below. Also impressed with the availability of vegan food, which my daughter would have been impressed with. All in all, our stay the Wolds Inn was very memorable mainly for the very friendly welcome but also for the food and smooth draught Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. I would whole heartedly recommend a stay.

We were keen to try the Wolds Inn under its new ownership. First impressions were very positive with a warm comfortable refurbished bar, a good selection of beers and welcoming staff. The place was overrun with staff with 8 slightly over eager but keen teenage waiting staff. This pub always had a reputation for hearty portions of good food so we opted for the now rather punchily priced (£16 ) steak pie. Pictures speak a thousand words and say what arrived was disappointing was an understatement. A handful of chips , a rather small piece of pie and a little tub of garden peas . An oversized gravy boat occupied half the plate which when removed revealed how mean the portion was. The quality of what was there was actually good albeit some fresh vegetables would have been nice . That said we were disappointed and left hungry. I know times are hard in hospitality but at that price point we expected both quality and a reasonable quantity. I do hope it’s just a teething issue so we will try again but not for a while.

We have been regulars at the Wolds Inn for Sunday lunch for a number of years because we regarded it as the best for miles around. New owners took over a month ago, but unfortunately it has gone downhill in several ways. In the past, the food was always excellent, especially the Roast Beef which was always presented neatly on the plate with a seperate dish of vegetables. We gave it a try 3 weeks ago, and were disappointed, but decided to give it a second chance this week. We were even more disappointed. Thankfully the roast beef was still as good as always, and more that enough of it, but the presentation was awful. There is a move at a lot of restaurants nowadays to pile everything untidily on the plate, rather than think about appearance, and on both our recent visits this was happening here, to the extent that all the items were mixed up. The veg were still served seperate, but were almost raw and inedible. We left ours. We spoke to one of the management, who said that he would speak to the chef, but the reaction left us feeling that there would probably be no change. WE WILL GIVE IT ONE MORE TRY SOON. Other diners were also not happy. One couple nearby waited a long time to be served, and returned their food and left, because it was inedible, and another family were heard complaining amongst themselves.

The title will become obvious. Family meal, pub was very busy so had to wait a while for service and food, but no problem with that. Landlord was taciturn as always (he has this down to a fine art), but staff service was excellent. Food was very good, generous portions and tasty. Service also very good. When it came to paying bill, Landlord was busy ignoring customers so I put cash and bill (with tip) on counter and indicated to him that I had so done and we left.On walking down to car,, the Landlady came rushing towards us shouting out that we had not left enough money for bill (£1.20p short she said, this on a bill of just under £70.) I knew that I had left more than enough and said so. She then said that she had the wrong bill and went back to the pub. I found the whole episode quite amazing, firstly to go shouting out in public that I had tried to "rob" her of a whole £1.20p and then discover that she had in fact made a mistake without any form of apology. Even if I had underpaid, such a small amount was hardly worthy of such dramatics. I now live just outside the village and this pub would be my local were it not for the attitude of the owners. Pity, it has the potential to be a really good pub, but will not get my money until it changes hands.

We stayed at the pub in October 2011 while walking the Wolds Way. Accomodation is limited. We arrived in the afternoon and were not allowed in. The landlord made us wait outside in the cold because he had a hunting party coming in and clearly didn't want two hikers in his bar. We actually wanted to go to our (pre-booked) room so wouldn't have been in the bar. We were very cold by the time we were allowed in. The girl who worked behind the bar was very friendly and helpful, sorting out our packed lunches for the following day and brought a portable heater to the dining area because I was still cold. Had there been any where else to stay we would have left.

Recently visited here with some friends and I can't believe how dead it was, I remember when you had to book well in advance to get in here and this time we went we could pick where we wanted to sit. Maybe this was due to the food standard, I ordered the chicken goujons and chips, the batter that the chicken was cooked in tasted old and very greasy taste to it and the chips were scrappy and were of poor quality too not like proper home made chips. Another thing we noticed was the size of plates has decreased everything looked too small for the plate.Unfortunately service was poor too we weren't approached if we wanted deserts it's like they forgot about us because they were too focused on setting tables for breakfast and we had to ask for the bill disturbing or what felt like the staff at the back of the bar, I think customer service training is required, unfortunately it was a very disappointing meal out at the wolds inn won't be returning.

Colin and I went to "The Wolds Inn" at Huggate tonight for tea. How disappointed we were. Colin had battered mushrooms stuffed with stilton cheese to start (glad I didn't have them as they were running in cooking oil), I had homemade pate which was lovely but the toast came wrapped in a serviette with cold butter and nowhere to butter it (but on the serviette). We bothordered "Homemade steak pie with lots gravy" (apparently a speciality). Well the pastry was rock solid, with warmed up chips and dried up steak. We had to complain it was so bad (something we have never done in the 40 years we have been together),We re-ordered chicken stuffed with MEGA DRIED APRICOTS and stilton cheese (which we couldn't find). Very plain and boring( It took over 30 minutes for the chicken to arrive) while we were waiting i assume it was thelandlady kept appearing from behind the bar and giving us the eye. She really wanted to intimate us, well sorry pet but it didn't work!!!!I don't think it was just us, there was a young couple on the next table one had steak pie which she left I think she was 2 young and afraid to say anything(we knew she wasn't happy because she didn't eat it) and the pork the young man had was too dry but again he didn't say anything. However we just accepted it was what it was but said to each other we would never go back, we did however feel like it was slap in the face (thanks to the landlady behind the bar) when we got the bill. The chicken was £1 more than the steak pie and they made sure we paid it. We had 2 glasses of wine and 1 beer between us and they never offered to give us a free drink or any compensation. Well "The Wolds Inn" @ Huggate you can stick where the sun doesn't shine and coming into winter !!!! Never again:(

Looking for somewhere to eat on returning from a day trip to the coast. Our satnav took us to this place as it was the closest to where we were, could not have made a better choice. A good menu with plenty of options and a range of prices. Portion sizes were good. I had the Whitby platter which consisted of haddock and skate gougons, breaded scampi and scallops. served with a salad garnish and tartare sauce it came with chips and a plate of vegetables. I am glad I did not order a starter as I would not have managed to finish the main. Sweets were a no no for the same reason which was a shame. The food was well prepared and presented. There was a good selection of wines which could all be bought by the glass or bottle. the pub is a character place, low beams and lots of atmosphere. B&B was available and would be a nice place to use as a centre for touring.

Nice, relatively friendly pub and restaurant. Good selection of vegetables with food. We went on a Sunday and the menu was limited. There was a set price menu, although it was a little bit prices if just having main at £11. Nice, a destination pub, but not sure it's worth making the effort, well not on a Sunday anyway.

My Friend lives in the area, last time I visited was this time last year. Before one starts the portion size are very generous, last year I had the steak Pie which was delicious, however this year I went for the full loin of Pork with mashed potatoes and the Veggies, absolutely delicious and just managed an Eton Messe as a desert. The beer is well looked after and superb, I had a Theakston Black Bull before the meal, very nice, also had a very nice Aussie Shiraz with the meal.My friend had and his partner had Gammon steaks, massive and both plates were cleared. We had booked our table and I would suggest you all book, as it was full on a Sunday evening when we were there. In my parlance when in the area, its a Boomerang place, you always come back.

Arrived here at 5pm as part of a cycling holiday, there was no sign of the owners and had to be let in by friends who had arrived earlier. The rooms were small and tired and smelled vaguely of damp. To be fair the food was good and the waiting staff were friendly and attentive. The owners however were less than friendly and we were never treated to a smile at any time during our stay. The worst place we stayed during the Way of the Roses trip, not recommended.

The whole atmosphere was 'prickly' here with a feeling of underlying tension. I have to say that I had a decent meal with a very well cooked lamb chop and the serving staff were helpful and friendly. The accommodation was average, but It was the owners who spoilt the whole experience for us. Their attitude was surly and unfriendly and we certainly won't be going back.

Spent the week on holiday in the village and used the pub most days. I found both the staff and the locals most welcoming. Contrary to other opinions on here, I found the landlord most approachable and enjoyed informative conversation about the local area. Food and drink were excellent and would recommend a visit.

After travelling for some time looking for a B&B for one night we came across The Wolds Inn. Booked in for one night and although they were busy they fitted us in for an evening meal - which was served quickly and good value. Husband had beef pie, packed with good lean meat, plenty of veg perfectly cooked. My choice was chicken breast with apricots and Stilton cheese, very tasty and large portion. Didn't need a desert as we were too full! The en suite room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was full English and excellent! Landlady was pleasant and waitresses although obviously busy were cheerful and helpful. Would stay there again.

We stopped here whilst walking in the wolds area and the choice of food was excellent. The staff asked about our day and where we walking. There were four of us and we had three different meals which arrived quickly and everyone was very impressed. I have to say it was the creamiest mashed potatoes I've ever had. Our only regret was we found this on the last day of our holiday. It really is a beautiful area and several of the locals stopped to say hello too. A real traditional country pub well worth a drive out if you don't live local.

My husband and i decided to have a run out and sample the food at the Wolds inn .Never been before and will never go again. We walked in around 12.30pm and just one couple in.The landlord was tidying a table ,never looked up or acknowledged us in anyway. We sat down and hubby went to the bar to find a menu.He mistakenly picked up a sweet menu and landlord gave him the food menu and asked if we wanted a drink with no friendliness or smile. The food came served by a pleasant enough waitress. It looked like something the local transport cafe might serve up.The gammon was thin and overcooked .Pineapple greasy.Everything else on the plate was deep fat fried onion rings mushrooms etc.The chips came in a dish in stuck together with dirty looking grease. All tasted just so greasy. The veg in a dish was clearly frozen and tasteless.I had a glass of wine and hubby had a pint, over 36 quid. What a waste of money.Really inferior ingredients and badly cooked.Bad food and unfriendly miserable staff.

I can honestly say that I have never encountered such unwelcoming and unfriendly owners in the "hospitality" business, and the visit to this pub was spoiled by their inhospitable attitudes. The landlord didn't communicate with his customers, came across as surly, and scowled at two people who entered the pub wanting a meal close to the time the kitchen was shutting. (They left.) I asked for a pot of tea after my meal, but was told the kettle had been switched off. On the positive side, for those who want large portions, this is certainly somewhere to consider, but the 'famous steak pie' costs £12 so is not cheap. It is pub grub at restaurant prices. I will not be going back, and would not recommend it. I find it hard to equate my experience with some of the positive reviews on here, and wonder whether they are all genuine?

Great place, but very disappointed after this visit. The pub was practically empty for a Friday night, so no atmosphere, very dull. This place is not cheap but has great food, however they have reduced the size of their portions. The veg and chips barely covered one persons ration. If I am paying for premium prices then I expect to be full after a visit, not on this occasion. Wold Inn you need to sort it out, maybe thats why you are quiet? People will not return.

We went here last night as a group of 5 for my father-in-laws 80th Birthday. We had a fantastic night helped by great our host Dan (John & Jane's, the licensee's, eldest son) and his capable team. My wife and I went early in the evening as we had previously arranged to bring balloons and the cake etc and set everything up. They could not have been more accommadating to our requirements with everyone helping us to get organised. We had a great meal including Duck, 2 steak pies (the best ever), a half rack of lamb and an 8oz steak and of course several drinks. All the food was cooked to perfection with great quality local products and exemplary service at a very reasonable price. Not only very good but the portions are huge. Fully recommended this place and If you do anything in the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds area I would urge you to give the Wolds Inn a try.

First time visiting the Wolds Inn and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the pate starter and steak pie for main with three Yorkshire puddings! I couldn't fault any of it, all very tasty and portion sizes more than adequate, came with lots of veg. I had no room left for a pudding which was a shame as they looked so nice! I will definitely be returning!

If you want large amounts of meat this is your place!! Steaks cut to size, up to and over 20LBS. Pork chops the size of door stops. All fresh local meat. However, there is little flair to the cooking, meat and potatoes, etc. In offensive and reasonable quality but could have a little more excitement. Staff can be a little unfriendly.

Called in for lunch on a Friday in December for lunch. Pub was quite empty but nice open fire and decorated for Christmas. Ordered sandwiches and chips between us but when the food came it was not very nice. The sandwiches were quite tasteless and the chips were a congealed brown mess in a dish. It looked like the fat they were cooked in hadn't been changed in months! The Timothy Taylor beer was the best thing about the visit but the chaps both agreed they had tasted better. It also closes at 2.00pm and then reopens at 5.00pm so we felt we had to leave as we were the only ones left after a while. We won't be returning.

A family of very hungry cyclists with two children under two were very excited to find the Wolds Inn on our Horizon. Unfortunately, the pub was closed. This was despite arriving at 12:30 when according the website the pub would be serving food. We checked the website the night before and there was no mention of the pub being closed for works on their kitchen. With the advent of modern technology one would imagine that this might be something to mention on their website??We departed cold and hungry with some very unimpressed toddlers.

Beer was good, my food was good, place is very nice and cosy. However, my husband ordered venison casserole with dumplings from the specials. It arrived with no dumplings and we were just told sorry we're out of dumplings so there aren't any. I queried and said the dumplings were the main reason he ordered the dish. The waitress just said sorry. It was poor that we were not told they had no dumplings earlier and offered to change the order, which we would have done. As the service went on it was clear the waitress felt uncomfortable and the dumpling issue became an elephant in the room to the extent that when we went to pay the proprietor was called to take payment. Yet no acknowledgement or apology was received from her.

If you happen to drop into this pub you must try the steak pie - the portions are not only huge but delicious! Served with freshly cooked vegetables (that aren't soggy!) and a choice of potato. Sunday lunch is also a must - with a choice of how many Yorkshire Puddings you want! If you can possibly fit in anything else... the Chocolate Sponge and Chocolate Custard is simple but so good.
