It's OK. Depends on who you get as to whether they're friendly or not. Food is average. Nothing to write home about. Last time we went we ordered drinks, 2 of them being cans of coke. Proper original red coca cola cans that were in the fridge in the cafe. They said to go and sit at our table outside and they would bring them out. Drinks arrived with the coke poured into glasses and no sign of the cans. Didn't think much of it until we tasted them. Pretty much 100% sure it wasn't normal coke but a cheap alternative. Didn't bother saying anything as how would we have proved it but haven't been back since.

Busy cafe with many reserved tables so we sat outside. Good choice of hot/cold drinks, food and cakes. Sadly nothing bothered gluten and dairy free although plenty of either. Drinks took a while to arrive and yet others received theirs very quickly. Friendly staff and lovely enclosed outdoor seating.

Terrible experience at Sails this weekend. We had booked a table and when we arrived with our toddler in her pram at the supposedly accessible cafe, we were made to feel we went an inconvenience. That was the first bad experience of the afternoon. Second bad experience, my toddler, another family member and I were looking at the cakes and flapjacks deciding what we wanted. A lady in front of us picked up one of the WRAPPED flapjacks and took it to the till. I picked the one my daughter chose and had a voice behind me say "Leave that to us." in a very rude manner. I turned around and the person had disappeared, but I guessed it was the tattooed waitress because she was scowling at me and when I immediately went over and apologised, saying as the lady in front of me had done the same thing I didn't realise there was an issue, she continued to death stare at me and didn't say anything at all. Third issue, the scones were so dry they completely fell apart and were inedible. Fourth issue, the (assumed) owner then came over (10 minutes after we'd paid for and had our order brought over to us) and said "didn't your daughter have a flapjack?" I told her we'd put it back as she'd decided on ice cream. She then demanded we paid for the flapjack as we'd touched it. I said but it's wrapped up and she said it doesn't matter, we still have to pay for it. I then explained that it was wrapped up so what was the issue and she said "what if a customer wanted to buy it and take it away?" Then let them buy it, its wrapped up air tight and there's nothing wrong with it. Shops have food wrapped up (and in the case of vegetables not wrapped up) which people pick up and put back again all the time and there's no issue. She brought a flapjack back but it was the wrong one. Didn't bother telling her as she would likely have tried to make us pay for more than one. Needless to say we were made to feel very unwelcome and will not be returning.

Cake lovely Scones - dry and pretty poor tbh Sausage roll - spot on Coffee - very good blend But when my child picked up a wrapped tray bake but then decided on Ice cream we put it back. The lady/ owner came over to the table forced to by as she had picked up stating she handled it ! The lady then went and picked the try bake up (wrong one) and brought to the table for to buy it! She was rude and showed absolutely no common sense! Will not be returning!

I have eaten at Sails many times over the years when visiting family and have never been disappointed. You need to reserve a table as it gets busy. Went for breakfast and lunch this time and can honestly say its very good value for money compared to alot of similar places now. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Good, wholesome cooked cafe food and nice that there's plenty of variety and not a burger or chip in sight!

I've eaten here before and the other reviews are fair. Today was 29 C and the sun was intense. We wanted to sit outside and move our chairs a few metres into some shade. The waitress told us we couldn't. We could swelter in the sun or go somewhere else. Pointless and nasty! We went to Kristoff's in Cottingham and had a great morning tea, in the shade, with very nice staff. We'll not return to The Sails.

Regular visitor to Sails however the last couple of occasion’s have been disappointing, nothing wrong with drinks or food but once it gets to 3.30ish the staff are intent on clearing away, moving chairs on to tables, mopping the floor while you are still sitting eating etc which isn’t pleasant, I appreciate the staff need to clean up but it does make you feel as though you need to leave, obviously the staff are not paid for additional time to clean up after 4pm!

We visited Sails for afternoon tea, our first time for the afternoon tea but not our first time visiting the cafe. The offering was delicious and varied. A mixture of sandwiches, homemade sausage rolls, pork pies and quiche. Brownie, rainbow cake and mini cheesecake. And scone with butter, cream and jam to finish. Two large pots of tea too. All very tasty. Service was quick. I would recommend booking a table for any visit as the cafe is popular but there is always outside seating available.

Unless you've reserved a table in advance, you may well be looking for an alternative place to eat, and also experience a large serving of rude ignorance into the bargain. We turned up yesterday, and on entering, it looked liked almost all of the tables were empty, at the counter we were rather dismissively told that "All the tables are reserved, and we're very busy at the moment" . . . As a business owner myself, I was absolutely astounded by the insanely short sighted attitude to customer service, or even common courtesy. We've visited here in the past, and the service has been superb. I can only assume that the business has changed hands since we last visited. Needless to say, we'll never bother again, and will ensure we let everyone we know, how rude and flippant the culture would appear to be.

Came today with some of my family after a dog walk. There wasn’t any seats outside but we looked for some acknowledgement from staff but nothing but a very unwelcoming glance from both members of staff. I went inside to look for a table and again got an unwelcoming vibe. We decided to go for a walk for an hour and then returned to find a table available. I went in to order and the younger girl replied “I think she’s only making sandwiches now as we stop food at 3” (It wasn’t quite 3). One of the other members of staff said “She isn’t making any food we stop serving at 2.45” Very abrupt and rude in my opinion. Very disappointed with the customer service as there wasn’t any!!!! We had done a walk around Skidby & surrounding countryside, having stopped here before we decided to do so again. As it was a chilly day & cold from our walk, wanted to sit inside but any spare table was reserved, we arrived at 11.30am, staff were reluctant to let us use a reserved table, even when customers left they slapped a reserved sign on it, you had no chance as a walk in! So I we sat out but despite the sun the cold northerly wind made it so cold. Saw customers leave I said lets go in, hubby went in & asked they still wouldn't let us have the table but eventually let us sit at one reserved for 12.30pm. We ordered at 11.27am breakfast is served till 11.30am, they were happy for hubby to have a breakfast sandwich but I wanted the lunch menu, lady taking order had to ask & again the reluctance was there, it was only 3 minutes early - honestly it's ridiculous. The only reason I have given a 4 rating is that my brie, grape & cranberry sauce in a warm ciabatta was delicious, as was the coffee. Staff really need to cheer up & be more accommodating and keep some tables free for walk ins.

I have enjoyed coming to this cafe / restaurant for years but very unlikely to bother again. In the past, the staff were all polite helpful and welcoming. Last Thursday I entered with a friend and was greeted with a brusque question "Are you having meal?" At 10.30 am I felt this could not be serious!!! No smile. The other staff behind the counter looked helpless and embarrassed. My friend and I sat and enjoyed the usual very pleasant drinks - but our conversation was disturbed by the same rude woman slamming a reserved sign onto our table. & I mean slammed down noisily. In the past a reserved sign would have been accompanied by a polite comment, perhaps stressing that we would be welcome until the time on the sign. My friend and I did indeed intend to eat out, but after this rudeness we decided to head to a new cafe in Beverley itself which has extremely polite staff. This rude, miserable woman is going to deter customers - why is she doing it??

Brilliant place! Adjoining Sails Café is the most resplendent, towering windmill overlooking you in the courtyard. This place is well worth visiting. The 1821 windmill is a Grade 2 listed building and is the last working windmill in East Yorkshire. The windmill wasn't open when I visited though. The council bought the mill in 1969 for £1! After renovations it was opened in 1974 as a working museum. The courtyard acts like a walled garden trapping in the heat, but fortunately the outdoor seating is shaded. There is indoor seating too. The staff are friendly and efficient. There is a fantastic range of homemade cakes. I can heartily recommend the carrot cake. It is juicy, moist, deliciously tasty, one of the best I've had. Good, chunky portion too. Definitely revisiting here. Great setting. Most enjoyable.

Foods ok. We sat outside as weather was ok. We've visited in the past when not possible to sit outside and first thing they asked was, have you reserved a table. I personally don't agree with reserving tables in a cafe, you're turning passing trade away. That is the reason we visit this place so infrequently. The cafe isn't big enough inside to reserve at least 50%of the tables.

Tbh we really enjoyed our breakfast visit. Good quality sausage x 2 which is a real bonus. The reason they've lost 2 stars which I couldn't let slide ,is they advertised black pudding on the breakfast and it was missing.. So we had 4 BP missing, they should have told us when ordering but didn't, so I got up and asked the waitress 'we've ran out' she says I waited for more words but they never came so sat down and ate my short changed breakfast before it went cold. There was no reduction in cost , no offer of an alternative replacement or anything It's false advertising if you don't inform the customer and not supply anything in return. Everything else good but that is not an easy forgivable mistake.

My partner and I have just returned from our visit to Sails Cafe we decided to eat there as the Skidyl Mill was unfortunately closed hence our decision to eat at the Cafe. We decided to eat outside mainly due to it being very noisy, however as it started to rain we decided to move inside despite the noise. I ordered a quiche with salad and my partner ordered a Ploughmans I specifically made it clear that I did not want or require any coleslaw or anything else. However, when it arrived it was daubed with salad cream, grated carrot, chopped beetroot, and a potato salad, all of which I did not want. The quiche was hard, the whole plate was a mess and looked very unappetising My partners Ploughmans was also pretty much the same which included a whole apple,a load of ham, also daubed with salad cream which again he did not want. As neither of us enjoyed our food and as the noise was increasing we decided to pay up and leave. It is fortunate that we are on holiday and so do not live in the area, as we would not return and may I suggest that if people wish to have extras on their food that it is served separately so they can have as more or less as they require rather than having it daubed all over the food

On my first visit, the food and drinks were good, but I decided to re-visit midweek whilst out walking on the strength of the first time and decided there and then I wouldn't go back. I ordered a coffee and a scone and waited over 25 mins to receive it. The one waitress delivering the food and drinks to the tables was telling every one they were sorry for the delay, but they didn't have enough staff on... too right.. but instead of closing tables down and making the table numbers manageable for their staffing levels, they kept taking the orders and the customers paid the price for their lack of staff, rather than the owner's pocket.. It's nice, but not special enough for a 25 min wait to receive a vending machine coffee in a paper cup and a scone on a paper plate.

Such a shame Went for the first time today and had lunch. Mine was delicious. My husband's lunch was sadly lacking. He asked for a ham sandwich in wholemeal, with lettuce and red onions The ham was cut in small bits and dry, looked like a lot of end bits. The lettuce was chopped ends of an iceberg lettuce, not the lovely mixed salad leaves I had in my sandwich. The red onion was chopped so small it kept falling out of the sandwich. He also ordered a side of wedges, which when they arrived were soggy and extremely greasy. Such a shame, we left feeling deflated as it was something we both should have enjoyed. The coffee and tea were great, the young lady who served us was lovely. The bill came and they had deducted the price of the wedges. Date of visit: July 2021

Took them 25 mins to take our order (and only after we asked them to) and over an hour from arrival before we received our food. It didn't appear to be excessively busy and we booked in advance. I know delays happen but it would have been polite to have been advised. Food however when it arrived was good.

Very welcoming and great customer service. Good range of food on the menu. I had the signature dish the steak pie large and it was. Served with mashed potatoe and pees. Very tasty and certain not small .it was a home made one All in all a great find off the beaten track . I will be certainly be back to savour more dishes. What a fantastic find. Thank you

Absolutely fantastic pub in rural Huggate! Excellent food (steak pie 10/10), excellent service and excellent rooms! Guinness isn’t bad either….! Thank you to all the staff who made our visit perfect!

Probably one of the most popular pubs in town. Good service, great atmosphere. There is regular live music on offer, but can get very busy when bands are playing.
