Living not far from Sandsend, I must have passed the cafe hundreds of times but today decided to pay our first visit to the cafe following a shopping trip to Whitby. A wonderful, extremely clean establishment and the staff are very friendly, serving with a warm welcome. Now I realise what I've been missing for years!!! Will definitely be back soon.

Not surprisingly perhaps, Whitby needed another visit very quickly, now I'm not saying Witsend was the only thing driving the decision but it played its part. So this time no need to sample the rest, every morning breakfast at Witsend, consistently as tasty as we remembered and Bob the dog was grateful for his plate of sausage too! When they say 'Dogs Welcome' they really are welcomed and treated as well as any customer. The cakes DON'T disappoint either., a different array of calorie filled gorgeousness every day. The garden is lovely, a calm, peaceful area filled with planters full, and I mean FULL, of flowers; a cake baker and a gardener, what a combination. The recipe for success in my eyes.

I popped into this cafe for a post-run hot chocolate and a slice of cake. I usually go to one of the other cafes in Sandsend. I won't be rushing back. I ordered a hot chocolate and a slice of chocolate cake and paid. I was asked where I was going to sit and told the assistant. Then a lady seemed to take over the order and asked again where I was sitting. A hot chocolate was put into a paper cup (as I was to sit outside) and she started to put a Victoria sponge in a paper carton. I asked, "excuse me, is that for me?" She snapped, "well, yes" I said, "I ordered a chocolate cake." She tutted at me and said, "well it says Victoria sponge on there". I said, "it maybe does but I ordered a chocolate cake". The lad who took my order said, "yeah, it's a chocolate cake". Again, she said, "well it says Victoria sponge there", as if somehow I'd reached over the counter and written 'Victoria sponge' on their ordering system. The chocolate cake was dry and the hot chocolate was watery.

We called in here as it advertised it was did friendly and we were not disappointed. The greeting we received was very friendly and the service really prompt too. The food we ordered was simply delicious and it was the little touches that enhanced already good food. For example the side salad accompanying my tuna mayo jacket potato was fresh and delicious as well as nicely presented and complimented the jacket really well . My son went for Pumpkin soup with optional chorizo which he devoured and heartily approved of as did his girlfriend with her macaroni cheese. My wife had a cheese and tomato panini which she too loved along with her latte. The view outside of the crashing waves added to the overall experience and we will definitely visit again if we are in the area. The bill too was a pleasant surprise at little over £40 for four lots of food and drinks. We entered hungry and left very replete.

We call in here most Sundays for breakfast and are never ever disappointed by the service or the food quality. Even when we ask for items that are a little different from the normal menu we have found the staff to be really accommodating. Wits End is very dog friendly (there’s always a tasty sausage ready and waiting for our pooches!). We have always found Debra, the owner, and her staff to be welcoming, friendly and generous…..which is why we keep returning. I have no hesitation in giving this lovely little cafe 5 stars and would highly recommend you put it onto your list of places to visit when in Whitby.

We found the female assistant very unwelcoming . We arrived at 15.10 and the sign outside said open until 16.30. We were told very abruptly that it’s only drinks and cakes. However she asked in the kitchen and we’re told we could have baked potatoes with no garnish and only cheese and beans. We reluctantly agreed to this as we were hungry. What a disaster!! Melted cheap, tasteless bright orange cheese and cheap over heated beans slapped on what looked like a microwaved potato with 2 portions of butter served separately though you couldn’t access the potato to put it in through the pulp of the greasy, smelly filling. Shockingly overpriced at £9 each. Too greasy and unpleasant to eat much of it. The assistant was growling at the other poor people wanting food or ice cream and being told there was no vanilla. A group arrived at 15.50 and were growled at and told we close at 4 and it’s 10 to now so you’ll have to eat outside. People were walking away in droves!! We foolishly went on to order 2 flat white coffees to take away the taste but they bore no resemblance to coffee never mind flat whits and were completely tasteless and milky with frothed milk on top at £3.20 each. The best part was an imported pack of 3 custard creams at 75 pence. WE ADVISE ANYONE TO STEER WELL CLEAR OF THIS PLACE AND WALK FURTHER ALONG THE SEA FRONT TO TIDES OR SANDSIDE CAFE WHERE YOU WILL BE WELCOMED AND SUPPLIED WITH GOOD FOOD AND COFFEE.

Went for brunch today to be managed by the most hostile and rude female member of staff. We were spoke down to like servants from someone who is clearly in the wrong job which spoiled our afternoon. Such a shame as enjoyed our previous visit served by someone else. Asked who the owner was so we could make a complaint. She should not be allowed front of house as she has no people skills. If it were my business she would be gone. Needs to go. Nice place let down by one individual.

Stopped off while walking the Cleveland Way. We were invited to take a seat and the garden was pointed out to us. The garden was a surprise space full of large pots of begonias in an assortment of of colours. We both ordered the full English breakfast, to set us up for a full days walking on the coastal path. The Full English cost £12, and included tea and toast. We both thought for what we got it was good value. The breakfast was served hot and tasty. Service was by friendly staff. What a delightful little cafe. You are greeted by a welcoming young man and there is covered outside seating or a cosy little inside area. All around the cafe is a fantastic display of flowers which are lovely to see. The menu is typical cafe offerings but all are prepared as required and very satisfying. It is also able to take disabled chairs and has a disabled toilet, which was vital to us.

Stopped for a coffee, enticed by a good review of the place and the prospect of the walled garden. The ‘walled garden’ turned out to be a dank, cheerless, scruffy-looking yard adorned with many admonitory signs. Many, but not all, of these related to Covid 19, and I gather from some previous reviews that bossy signage is a feature of the place. The most depressing sign of all announced that the toilets are closed due to Covid 19. Other establishments keep their toilets open, so why can’t this one? There is no service. You knock on a small hatch door and a person appears behind it to take your order. When the order is ready the hatch briefly reopens to disgorge food and drink. And that’s it. No hospitality. We ordered two flat whites which turned out to be intimidatingly large disposable beakers filled with a brownish liquid. It tasted of very little and certainly not of coffee. I left most of mine and we turned our backs on this place, never to return.

We left and I mentioned my disappointment to the 3 staff behind counter. Their response was “we are busy”. I said that wasn’t really good enough to leave customers that long (a customer after me ordered 8 takeaway coffees!). Again I said they should really prioritise customers to which her reply was “what do you want me to do, can you get out the way I need to serve this customer”. I have a holiday home near and was a regular customer before lockdown. I won’t go again, I will not recommend this cafe, such rudeness doesn’t deserve business.

If you're looking for friendly service, great food and value for money...…….this isn't the place to go. My wife and I wanted a light lunch, and as we didn't want to leave it any later, we called at this café when passing on our way to Staithes. We both ordered cheese and onion with chutney on ciabatta, with salad, a soft drink and a cup of tea.The salad was inedible, slimy, brown, rotting and possibly well past its retirement date. The ' ciabatta ' bore a remarkable resemblance to the cheapest bread bun imaginable.Being pressed for time, we ate the cheese and pickle bread roll, drank up, and spoke to the proprietor. Remarks about the salad were rebuffed with a comment about the lettuce having being splashed by the rain when it grew ( and there was I thinking that lettuce actually needed rain when it grew, in order to appear fresh and healthy ). No apology, no offer to knock a little off the bill, and " that'll be £16 ". So, if you're looking for friendly service, great food and value for money...……..go a few miles up the road towards Staithes, and call at the Barn Owl café, where you'll receive a warm welcome from the staff and the woodburning stove, comfy chairs, great food at very agreeable prices, newspapers and books...…..and an antiques shop on site to add further interest to an establishment that deserves to succeed.

Good selection of gluten free, I had the Yorkshire ham gluten free sandwich which was tasty and filling. It's not the cheapest place but everyone's food looked good and there was plenty of it. They were also happy for us to just have tap water with our lunch. Alfresco dining available with a nice courtyard garden at the back.

Never again ,£4 for a toasted tea cake, £4 for a chips ,a bowl of bland soup and not hot for just under a fiver. I don't mind at all paying for good quality food but this is far from that .

We recently stayed in Sandsend for a week and ate breakfast at this cafe several times. The staff were all friendly and service was quick and efficient. We had the full English each time and food was well cooked and presented nicely. Coffee was good and the orange juice lovely. We realise there are cheaper places to eat but thought the price reflected the standard of food. Also dog friendly which is a bonus. The cakes looked lovely although we didnt get a chance to try them. I am surprised by all the negatve reviews and thought it was a nice, clean, well run establishment.

Been here a few times over the years. Was always good value and good food, with some nice specials on the specials board. Last couple of times prices are notably higher and choices more restricted. Dogs now allowed though but make sure you adhere to all the bossy signs everywhere.

Hello Just to say that the toasted tea cake you offer is vastly over priced for what you get, I am aware that you state on your Menu that it's a large one, but when you can get two elsewhere for less than your prices then it's not value for money and having visited Sandsend end on many occasions we will not be visiting Witsend again sorry

Stopped here after walking on the beach in a biting wind. Cafe was warm, table in a cosy area and atmosphere friendly.

Arrived with the wife on a Saturday morning, quite early. There was a nice log burner in the corner which gave off a nice amount of heat and was a good focal point. Order was taken and we warmed ourselves while it was being cooked to order. When breakfast came, it was hot, nicely presented and well cooked with decent ingredients. The only thing I would say is it was a little overpriced at £9 each but this did include coffee.

We've eaten here many times before and it is really good for good, old fashioned cafe food - good portions and tasty. This time, though, our 'fry up' tasted slightly odd and we identified it as the oil it had been cooked in. It was still very tasty and good value and it won't stop us visiting again.

What an absolute gem of a cafe. Right next to the beach and so warm and cosy on a cold winter's day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we, along with our dog were made to feel very welcome. We ordered full English breakfasts and coffees and I can honestly say the breakfast was one of the best I have ever eaten. The coffee was very good too. We will definitely be back again.

Just passing and found this little eccentric cafe with a scout hut out the back(or so it seems) with real fires during cold weather.

Four of us had lunch. A small cheese scone £3! Two baked potatoes with beans (£6) with no salad, coleslaw or any trimmings. Just plonked on an enamel dish. Service was curt and not welcoming. I don't like complaining but compared to lots of other lunch places we found this one was overpriced and food badly presented.

We had walked the 5 miles from Runswick Bay and Witsend was a lovely place to rest with a glass of wine and a very tasty soup for lunch at the end of our walk. All served with a cheery welcome and smile.

Our hungry family of six called in here when we spent the day on lovely Sandsend beach. We had coffees and hot chocolates, and bacon and sausage rolls which were large, well filled and delicious. The service was nice and friendly, including helpful advice on the tides. I've given 4 rather than 5 stars because it was a bit expensive.

We love this part of the world, the beaches and the people. We bagged an Airbnb overlooking the beach and remembered this lovely café. On a bend at the side of the road, you can watch the world go by whilst enjoying wonderful service, beautiful cakes and lovely freshly ground coffee. Lovely touches like knowing every ingredient in the cake and being clued up about Gluten Free. Real service like you don't get in city centre cafés and all with a lovely disposition that people in this part of the country specialise in. Perfect for a quiet coffee or a beachside lunch or snack. Wonderful. A must visit.

This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

Use this pub regularly drinks at good price food reasonable for this type of pub. Comfortable surroundings, not the best weatherspoons compared to many others. Come here regularly could do with more staff.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
