I went to Winships last week and whilst advertised open was told they were clearing up from an event come back in an hour. Then today told come back in two hours as they were going shopping for fruit and veg. Painful as was a few mile road diversion. I'd book in advance but a while before they get my return custom.

Asked for a chicken sandwich and a coffee. Was asked if I wanted lettuce and mayo on it. Said no the mayo and yes to the lettuce. Sandwich came with mayo and no lettuce. Why ask if you're just going to get it wrong? I hate mayo. Also, coffee was lame. If I'm paying barista price for a black coffee, I expect a barista coffee, not a French press.

Our first visit (3 couples) to this newly revamped restaurant also under new management. Love the light, bright contemporary style and the mediterranean cuisine. Very friendly helpful service. The chef/owner came out of the kitchen to explain his specials, one of which I chose for my main meal, chicken pizzaiola, delicious. Others enjoyed the black pudding starters I Ioved a classic moules mariniere. Lots of pasta dishes to choose from which were well received. Most of us chose the apple cider sticky toffee pudding which was a revelation. Voted by all as the best sticky toffee pudding ever.

Delighted to find out my father had yet again arranged for us to have a family lunch here when we arrived for a visit. Another fantastic offering of superbly cooked food. Highlight for me was the lamb steak. I honestly cannot remember ever eating lamb that was as tender and as well cooked as this was. Other highlights were the confit duck leg which just fell off the bone and the salmon fillet. This time round we forced ourselves to try a shared dessert and went for the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce. Big mistake as next time I shall have to have one completely to myself. It was so light both my wife and myself agreed we could have easily demolished a whole portion each. Attended the wonderful Windships restaurant last night for some food and drinks with friends local to the area. We've travelled up from South Wales and it was well worth the journey. The warm greeting we had from the staff at the Windships was first class. Special mention to Nicky and Caroline who were so friendly and made us feel extremely welcome taking our coats , receiving our drink orders and showing us to our reserved seats . My partner and I are very much "foody" people and have eaten in a number of top rated restaurants all over the country but have to say the meal we had at Windships was up there with the best we've had. The beef medallions were cooked to perfection, and my duck dish was incredible . The puddings were also to die for! Well done chef Norman who not only a talented cook but extremely friendly , funny and welcoming .Excellent value for money, service of a 5star hotel but with the warmth of a local pub . Winships is our favourite venue for Sunday lunch, both for the high quality of the food and the excellent and friendly staff (that's you Caroline, Sheila and Chloe). The Sunday roasts never disappoint, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Have only one suggestion for chef Norman and that is a little more variety in the starters, desserts and vegetables - maybe you shouldn't change a winning formula but they are virtually the same every week. Nevertheless, they are still really good.

On a circular walk from Ovingham ('Ovingjum') along the Tyne and through Whittle Dene, Winships at Ovington was a welcome stop for morning coffee. A large cafetière was generous for the price, and then 'all-in' came two goodly pieces of 'whisky-tea-bread'. Chatting to Caroline, it became clear that consideration of a visit for lunch would be worth a trip.Home after our walk, and striking while the iron was hot, we booked for Sunday lunch.A really tasty, home-made soup and home-made rustic bread was a fine starter. Our mains were ‘Confit of duck leg served on a potato rosti with a plum and ginger sauce’ (delicious, as good, and as large as I've had anywhere) and roast lamb, my wife's favourite, which was equally good. Noticing that the 'Veg of the day' included two root vegetables, which are my pet hates, my request of whether there might be an alternative was met with 'I'll ask the chef what he's got'. Answer, French beans, sugar-snap peas and broccoli. Splendid. What service! And so willingly done.We were tempted by the puddings. For me the duck had filled all the holes but my wife really enjoyed hers (but I’ve forgotten what it was!). A bonus, which always gets a tick, is coffee – with refills as you wish.Winships is smallish, so booking on Sunday's is advised. It is homely with a friendly atmosphere and very pleasant, helpful staff. The place is clearly a favourite with 'locals', which covers folk from a wide area, who appreciate the well selected, simple menu and food that is cooked well. We'll be going again.

I live in the village so I'm lucky enough to visit Winships every now and again for a treat. My last visit was towards the end of April and I had the steak and mushroom pie with monster chips. The food was very nicely presented (as you will see from the photo) and tasted lush! It was a big portion for me and it took me a while to get through but I savoured every mouthful :-)Norman (the head chef) and his staff do an amazing job with regular changes to the menu of starters, mains and desserts. Some of my favourites are belly pork, steak/game pie, chicken kiev, lamb rump...the list goes on! Starters and desserts are equally imaginative and tasty too.Great food, great service, you can't go wrong. :-)

Visited Winships yesterday with a family relation for dinner. Two course dinner for £19.90 and a Special for £11.95, excellent value for excellent food superbly cooked by Norman. All mains were delicious and came with ample vegetables, all perfectly cooked. Two glasses of wine and three after-dinner coffees brought the bill to under £70. We were the only diners during the early part of the evening and my worry is that the prolonged closure of the bridge between Ovingham and Prudhoe and the still unpassable road from Bywell to Ovingham may be having a detrimental effect on this gem of a restaurant. Come on all those looking for good food, friendly and professional service, and relaxing surroundings - make the extra effort to go the long way round and visit Winships. You won't be sorry.

Caroline made us feel very welcome even though we were early and made fresh coffee for us while we looked over the menu. In addition to their two/three course lunch menu, they also had some excellent 'specials' and we went for the flash-fried lambs liver and the grilled salmon. I am not a regular customer and I will not be rushing back. 5 courses on Christmas day for £65 a head seemed reasonable (ish) but none were great. I had turkey as a main course, it was served with a gravy that tasted like tinned tomato soup. The beef and pork had the same tomato gravy on them. It was horrible. I would first like to start off by saying that I come here regularly. This restaurant is in a lovely location with beautiful countryside. The restaurant is only small with a certain amount of tables so I would strongly recommend booking a table for this restaurant venue because it gets quite busy. When you get in to the restaurant expect a warm welcome from pleasant helpful and caring staff. Special shout out's to Sheila Caroline and Nicola. They are what makes this restaurant so special to visit. The Sunday lunch is really nice I would highly recommend

We would like to say a huge thanks to all the staff for making our Aunt and Uncle's 50th Wedding Anniversary so lovely. The set up was wonderful - The food was of very good quality and highly recommend the Prawn starter - lamb and the varied list of deserts. Well worth a visit to this little gem!

After a few days of self catering we had a last night treat of no cooking. The service was friendly and attentive and the menu had a good range of options for each course. Portion size is very generous so if you like a pudding, avoid or share a starter. Garlic prawns and lovely retro chicken Kiev recommended as well as good quality Pinot Grigio.

My partner and I took my mam here on Saturday night ( yesterday) as a birthday treat. It was our first time at Winships and I highly recommend the place. The food was first class and service extremely good and friendly. Between us we had starters of the soup, goats cheese tart and the black pudding, all beautifully cooked and presented. Our mains were chicken Kiev, duck and the lamb. Everyone thought their dish was fab. Mine was the lamb and it just fell apart as it was so beautifully cooked. Portions were generous which meant and my partner could fit in a sweet of ice cream. We had refillable coffees instead. We were sat upstairs. This area was a lot smaller than downstairs but they didn't squash loads of tables in so there was ample room. There has been a previous comment of upstairs not being very nice. I found no problem withupstairs but I don't know if they've decorated since the comment. We all highly recommend a meal here.

In the Tyne Valley there are a lot of pubs setting the standard for great food and drink. When we arrived at Winships it was clear even on a Tuesday night that this pub has a great following particularly with the locals who were out in some numbers which is always a good sign. We had for main course chicken supreme with vegetables included in the meal price. I have to say on the next table other customers were having fish goujons which looked great as did the home made chicken Kiev. All in all a great evening and we will be back. I would have given it the highest rating but the draft Wylam beer was a new barrel and was served to me in a rather cloudy condition

had dinner at Winships on my Wifes birthday as we had received several very complimentary reports about the establishment. All I can say is that they were quite right. It may be small, but the welcome we received was 'Typically Northumbrian'. The menu was great and when the food arrived it was brilliant. At the end of the night the Chef visited every table for a chat which we thought was excellent. Strange to say we have lived approx. 7 miles from Winships for 26 years and only just found it. We intend to be back next month with 4 of our friends. You hide your light under a bushel Guys but you have a restaurant to be extremely proud of and I look forward to returning!!.

What a wonderful asset to Hexham this is!! At the top end of the car park, really comfortable and cosy, with attentive and friendly staff. Great value and superb quality food. It’s the best cafe in Hexham. Bar none. And I’ve lived here 65 years….
