Only a 5k walk from the Felixstowe pier, along the seafront to this little gem. On a lovely sunny lunchtime we sat outside & watched the toing & froing of the Deben ferry while sampling the fish and chips. Welcoming, friendly service. Not cheap but delicious & not to be missed if you’re visiting here. Will recommend.

Sadly we can’t rate the food as, despite arriving a few minutes before closing and with 3 members of staff present, we were told they had stopped cooking…despite the fact we only wanted a cold sandwich to go! A shame as we’ve previously had a friendly service here and some tasty food.

I recently stayed in Felixstowe Ferry for the week and this was my go-to cafe. There are 2 local cafés and this one is far superior. All the locals eat here. Better food. Friendly and helpful staff. It also has the best location right on the river. Loved their prawn sandwiches on granary bread - absolutely stuffed full of prawns. Fabulous hot cup of tea. This place is an absolute gem.

Visited here just for coffee and cake late morning. Coffee and cake was brilliant. However, what really shone out to us was the 2 ladies running this attitude and attention to detail for Covid-19 safety. It was second to none and bigger restaurants /retailers could learn much from this establishment. I got the impression even post 19 July 21 some safety measures will remain which I wholeheartedly support.

It's the location that sets this cafe apart. Situated close to the River Deben Estuary, one can sit on the veranda and while away the time gazing at the boats on their moorings and watch the Deben foot-ferry coming and going. The food is a cut above your average cafe fare, with fresh dressed crab and lobster when available (actually landed by the cafe proprietor). And there are all the more familiar items on the menu as well. A Winkle's full English will satisfy even the largest of appetites. It is a small cafe, it gets very busy and inside seating is limited but I prefer sitting outside anyway (unless it's raining!)

Great little spot, ended up there with the family for Fish&Chips; one summers evening. Look no frills or spills but the food was 10 out of 10, the place is tiny but sitting outside is the best. Watch the world slip by, the kids can do a bit of crab fishing if they like and you can watch the boats come and go. The price of Fish and Chips won't break your bank and there's no extra charge for Ketchup, then finish off with a walk along the beach. We paid cash so I'm not sure if they have a card machine for you millennials, but hey! all part of the adventure.

Just when you think things go wrong ,, something crops up to your advantage. Recently retired , with my wife , have routinely eaten lunch out , ALOT. We have favoured small eating places , garden centres etc.and wandering away from our home town. We discovered the nearby cafe to the Winkle , and used it several times. Today , leaving Clacton-On-Sea where we live , we decided to go to Felixstowe for lunch. We checked on the internet for closing time of the “normal cafe” we have used to ensure they would still be open , and arrived , after paying £1.50 for a car parking ticket , to find the “normal cafe “ was closed !! Their loss , Winkles gain. Greeted by two young ladies , they supplied us with fantastic fish and chips , and even offered “pensioiners rate”. Smashing view of the river and delightful back ground chatter from what is obviously pleased previous cutomers. Will be going to Felixstowe in the future as one of our eating places , but not to our “normal cafe” we used to go to, but to Winkles

You take you own alcohol (soft drinks available) and your own bread but you can get bread if necessry. The food is so fresh. We shared a lovely salad bowl and 2 of us had such succulent crabs. The prawns and smoked salmon were superb. The service is friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The lobsters looked good too but we did not taste them. The ambience is great - big windows overlooking the boat yard and river. It is freshly decorated and just is a lovely different place to eat. If you prefer hot food you can go to the cafe opposite. Bring your own alcohol and bread at no extra charge. A family arrived after us with teenage boys who didn't want seafood, no problem they could pick from the cafe menu across the road and eat in the seafood restaurant with their parents. Dropped in here for breakfast on a very busy Sunday morning hence the half-hour wait we were warned about when placing the order - fair enough as there are the lovely views of the estuary to while away the time with and the grandkids indulged in a spot of crab fishing from the nearby jetty. We ordered a small breakfast which was nicely presented and very tasty with thick slices of bread but feel that the larger size one would be better suited if you had a good appetite - the only negative comment was that one of the children's meals was overlooked and we had to remind two staff members before it was rectified and bought with many apologies from them.Winkles interior is small but there are large outside benches on the grass as well as those on the decking - will return but probably for a lunchtime visit.

We decided to pop to Old Felixstowe on a whim, not expecting to stop for lunch. This was the first visit for years. We were pleasantly surprised. It was helped by the weather - a warm & sunny day. After a stroll around the area we looked for somewhere to eat & came across Winkles. They have a 5 star hygiene rating which should be a good sign. Neither of us wanted a big meal. We spotted the Specials Board & one of our favourite meals - Whitebait served with salad & bread for £5.95. We chose to sit inside (it was a bit windy) next to a window with fantastic river views. This is an amazing selling point for this establishment. Service was reasonable considering how busy they were and it was well worth the wait. The portion size was much bigger than we thought it would be, very pleasantly surprised, & very tasty. We really enjoyed our trip & will be returning.

It is easy to be dubious about those places that advertise that their food is 'locally sourced' - Winkles don't bother with that phrase - they just advising that lobster and crab are available in season. With the linked fishing hamlet fresh fish and seafood shop a few metres away and the River Deben estuary lapping at the cafe this is seriously fresh seafood - and no carbon footprint to transport it - and - they know how to make a crab sandwich! Service is suitably simple too - find a table, place your order at the counter, help yourself to cutlery, crockery etc. Wonderful!

Lovely afternoon at Old Felixstow. We had just enjoyed a beer at the Ferry Boat and walked over for some chips. You have to queue in where people are eating to order. It was busy so expected to wait (Food cooked to order) while we waited we bought done prawns from sea food shop. When the food arrived it was lovely and hot. The sausages were lovely - not your normal squishy ones. The chips were obviously frozen and were dry and difficult to eat. Some were not cooked through. We were disappointed as it is such a lovely place and a real fish and chip shop would really bring in the crowds! However the staff were very friendly and clearly busy - the crab salad looked inviting.

There are very few seats, approx 10 and we were lucky to get one on a cold day. The whole exprienence was very rustic and although what we had was ok I do not think I would or could eat a meal here.

We stopped here for a cup of tea & a latte which were very reasonably priced £3.10.Whilst in there I happened to glance at the menu--2eggs & chips £4.50,2 sausages & chips £4.00 but 2 sausages, egg & chips was £6.50 making the cost of the egg £2.50--very strange

After a bracing, but sunny, walk we stopped off for a coffee but ended up ordering cod and chips. These were absolutely delicious. We are outside as it was very busy but we're wrapped up warm and it didn't matter one jot. I can honestly say these were the best fish and chips we have eaten; wafer thin batter, juicy succulent fish plus the obligatory frozen peas and a non-greasy plate once finished. Truly yummy

I had a lovely seafood plater in the summer, we sat outside and the view was beautiful. Despite it being very busy the service was really good and the staff were all very welcoming and helpful.

Excellent value for money fish and chips in a great location on the water. Although a "pensioners special" it was a far better meal than we've had in some much more expensive places. You can't beat the view across the Deben and there's a good sea wall walk to the Martello Tower to work off the calories.Friendly and cheerful staff.

Visited with faimily for a quick something to eat. Basic setting but good food and friendly setting. Only negative I have is there was no high chair for my son. Appreciate there isn't a lot of space but a booster seat to sit my child at the table would have been good.

Worth the expensive, rough car park, owned by a neighbouring business. Limited menu but everything is fresh, ( they run over to a local fisherman to get your order!) and beautifully cooked in generous proportions. Very reasonable prices & if it's nice you can sit outside.

This is a regular haunt of mine. If the fish they served was any fresher it would still be swimming. Lovely light batter and very good value. Inside and outside seating. overlooking the beautiful river Deben not more than 5 metres from the water. Superb fresh wet fish stall next door.

The food was really very good, but the cafe left a lot to be desired on cleanliness.it was very busy and seemed short of staff. Not much to do except the ferry ride. The food was quite expensive for what we had.

The only down side, could be the parking. But that rip off is governed by the Ferry Cafe apparently.Winkles was excellent, the big breakfast was big and very well cooked and presented. The Cod and chips was the same, with a very nice batter and very fresh cod. The scrambled egg with salmon, was top notch, very nice service and obviously very busy because of all of the above. Well worth it popularity.

We found our way to Felixstowe Ferry today for the first time. It's a small hamlet a couple of miles north of Felixstowe town. I'm a bit reluctant to share our find as it was so perfect in a unchanged, peaceful way.At Felixstowe Ferry you will find a view out to the north sea, a view across the water to Bawdsey Quay, a foot ferry, a couple of redoubt-type forts, eclectic style houses and beach huts,a jetty for crabbing and the foot ferry and lots of shingle. There is nice looking pub - Ferry boat Inn - and fresh fish for sale in a small, beach type hut.We choose Winkles at the Ferry to have a snack - sitting outside overlooking boats and the jetty. Two huge chip butties, freshly cut white bread (brown was on offer), tea, an orange juice and a bottle of water for £9.30 plus all the red and brown sauce etc you could want. The staff were all friendly and smiling, the milk for the tea was in a jug, the tables weer clean and the sea air wonderful. There was a lot on the menu including all day breakfasts, fresh fish when available and dietary needs catered for. There are some nearby public loos if needed. All in all, really great find and recommended.

Visited today with my husband for two vegan hotdogs. Waited 30 minutes and went to counter to see if we had been forgotten, was told with no apology they had some big orders. 15 minutes later our food arrived with an apology about the wait. My husbands order was in correct, they took it away and corrected the order but his hotdog was cold when it was returned. When we went to pay we offered feedback as none was asked for and the response was that there was only two of them working and they were busy. No discount offered or compensatory cake or such. It cost £22 for a thoroughly poor experience.

Over-priced food - an unbelievable £4.75 for a stodgy, tasteless cheese scone with one pat of hard, cold butter. Only managed to eat half of it, really unpleasant, threw the rest away. The cakes were not covered and crawling with flies. Sandwiches even more over-priced at £8.25 for a small cheese sandwich with white bread. This cafe used to be so much better. Will drive past in future and not stop here.

Ver disappointed. Two young girls on duty who were indifferent to our questions. We sat down and neither came to ask if we needed drinks before ordering. There was only one other family in the restaurant. Left without ordering. Have been before with better results but not happy with the lack of service.

Stopped here for some breakfast and on entering we were met by a very cheerful friendly lady who showed us to a table. We had a yummy breakfast, it was delicious, together with some great coffee. All the staff were attentive, happy, and cheerful. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely go again when visiting Aldeburgh!

We took advantage of an unexpectedly sunny Sunday to take a friend in a wheelchair for a stroll on the prom and brunch at the Alex — where we knew there was an accessible loo, should it be needed. Our order included a vegan breakfast, muffin and poached eggs and smoked haddock fishcakes, plus cake. All were good, fresh and well-cooked. Hats off to the chef who perfectly poached those eggs. The staff were friendly and professional and went out of their way to help us with wheelchair manoeuvring. The place feels well-run.
