Fantastic place. Lovely room. Smart luxury decor. Loved the choice of tea and coffee with a nice addition of macaroons. Would stay here again attentive staff. Lovely food, plenty of choice off the breakfast menu.

Celebrated a special family birthday at this gorgeous place. The first time visiting it for all of us. The food was sublime, the ambience just perfect and all the staff so attentive and kind. We were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the private dining room which added a little something to the occasion. A great experience for us all and definitely a place to revisit!

Chose this because of the good reviews for afternoon tea but were left disappointed. The good bits: amazing venue and location, good parking, beautiful weather, a very good start. Seated in nice plush room looking out over quaint garden terrace. The waiter constantly whining loudly about his colleagues and the rota kinda spoiled the ambiance. The “sparkling local wine” could have been anything, we were not shown the bottle and I could have been drinking Tesco Prosecco? The arrival of the afternoon tea was unceremonious but looked grand. The scones, which other reviews had declared as the best in the uk, tasted like they had been made the day before and left to dry on the radiator. One small pot of a creamy margarine substance was not enough to moisten these medieval and hefty creatures. It was quite an effort to get through. The sandwiches were very good, the bread was fantastic and I’d guess home made or from a local bakery? The rest we had to box up as the scones had defeated our appetite. The tea was very good and we were given another pot of the dubious margarine (it wasn’t butter, it wasn’t cream, it wasn’t clotted cream, I seriously don’t know what it was?) when we asked for it. £111 including service and “sparkling something” for 3 is not extortionate but there is room for improvement.

We stayed here for one night but the night we did stay was absolutely lovely. The staff were great, the room was a good size and the restaurant was absolutely incredible. The food was delicious, it gave me a chance to try oysters for the first time (which were given for free after our starter) which I probably wouldn't have ever tried off my own back but they were great. The dessert was amazing and the pricing was very reasonable. The bed was probably one of the comfiest we've stayed in in a hotel. Will definitely be back.

Warmly welcomed, elegant dining room with views of the Tye. Very nice decor and not pretentious. Staff delivered excellent service, start to end. Food was extremely tasty, beautiful presentation. Limited but excellent starters, my terrine was super and the other dishes went down well . The roasts were actually very generous, every element delicious, and best I've had for ages. Wasn't as busy as I'd expected, but we ate at early sitting. Two of us had desserts which I had thought pricy, but the quality and portion side made them an excellent choice, the rum n raisin creme brulee a delight and enough to share. Very satisfied and would highly recommend, their private dining room looked splendid. Wine list was fairly expensive, but good. Waiting staff made us welcome and well attended to. Good job!

After a pleasant morning visiting the nearby NT property and the church on the Tye we took a look at this one for a light lunch, primarily because we were blessed with a fine weather day and they have a very nice outside patio area with some tables overlooking they Tye. Spotted they had an afternoon tea on the menu so we went for one of these to share between the two of us plus an additional tea and it was just right. Very good warm scones and very fresh sandwiches. Good service levels from the two guys working the lunchtime shift, so this one worked for us for a lunch break. Plus when I asked our waiter which of the four of the village pubs I should visit for a pint of ale, I later couldn’t fault his suggestion of the George either.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We’ve been dining at The Wingrove for over 15 years and sadly feel that the experience has recently become rather lack-lustre. Whilst the pricing is in line with several other Sussex restaurants holding Michelin rating, our experience fell short. Being open to the Terrace, I found the room cold and although the ambiance of candlelight is always welcomed, it was a little dark. It needs more candles or supplementary lighting. The wooden dining tables are permanently sticky - presumably owing to sanitising products adversely affecting the polished/varnished surface. Following COVID, this is not unique to The Wingrove but it is very unpleasant and, at ‘fine dining’ prices, needs addressing. I resorted to using my napkin as a tablecloth which, if introduced in lieu of bare wood, would immediately remedy the issue. The Bello Tramonto was too sweet for a Pinot Grigio and, at £27 a bottle (an almost 300% mark-up on current wholesale price of £6.99) I expected something more drinkable. Having drunk better ‘plonk’, we didn’t order a second bottle as is typical for us and, in the apparent absence of any discernment in the wine sourcing, we certainly weren’t going to risk paying more than this. On a chilly September evening, I didn’t relish the concept of the vegan Chilled Tomato Consommé. Nor did I fancy ‘Egg with Hollandaise’ as a dinner option so opted for some Flint Owl Sourdough Bread. It would have been nice if a choice/combination of white or brown had been offered as brown sourdough is not to everyone’s taste. With ‘Crostini’ by definition meaning toasted bread, my husband was disappointed that his ‘Gambas Crostini’ was another slice of the same sourdough reduced to a soggy mush served underneath the sauce rather than sitting crisply on the side. My Roasted Cauliflower Steak with lentils, spiced harissa hummus and roasted garlic mash was plentiful and tasty if a little pricey at £18. My extra side portion of Tenderstem Broccoli was equally generous. At £9, however, I felt the selection of three Sussex Cheeses was a little ungenerous and uninspired - the cheddar-style just tasted ‘old’ and was hard and slightly sweaty as if left standing in a warm kitchen. I personally dislike the currently fashionable, uber-thin ‘biscuits’ that are as tasteless as the Eucharist wafers that they resemble. They lent nothing to an already dreary cheeseboard. When asked by obliging staff whether everything was okay with our £163 meal, there really wasn’t anything to be gained by upsetting them with an honest account, particularly within earshot of other diners who may have been thoroughly enjoying their experience. To my mind, these are all issues that could/need to be addressed by management before customers even enter the restaurant.

You will need you’re very small appetite and your very big wallet to enjoy this place. You will also need a runner to get your drinks as staff are so inattentive. You’ll need a torch and a magnifying glass to find your food, and if you’re drinking wine you will need to take a decent glass as ‘they’re the only ones we’ve got’! The four of us had…… 2 g&t’s, 2 fish mains (£29 for lemon sole) 1 chicken and 1 lamb main. 1 x£35 bottle of Spanish plonk. 4 average puds and 2 coffee’s that we sent back!!! Grand total… Two hundred and eighty pounds, yes, £280.00! I suppose we could have made it cheaper with the veggie option of ‘cauliflower steak’ for the knock down price of £18 !!! Fine dining it ain’t! Got home and needed a sandwich! Never again!

We were informed that scones would not be ready until 12:00. So we said we would wait. Although we only asked for a scone they brought us 2 very small scones each with butter and jam. The bill for this came to £25. We were charged for afternoon tea. Certainly the most expensive coffee and scone I ever had and probably will ever have again. This was an enjoyable dining experience. The food is that sort of modern, Continental fare, and the wine list contains some great local wines (from Rathfinny), which is always appreciated when you are visiting. Probably its weakest spots are the ones expectable for a restaurant that belongs to a hotel. The atmosphere is lacklustre, and for diners who are not staying at the hotel, finding the entrance can be a bit awkward.

My birthday wish was that we had gone elsewhere. Service was rude, reluctant and random, food was bland, chips saturated with oil and overcooked to crisps and had a hair in them. We stayed in the hotel for two nights, and had two breakfasts and two dinners. The service could best be described as chaotic at one dinner and one breakfast, which spoilt the experience. Unsure why this happened - about the same numbers each time, the breakfast waitress said that it was because everyone had arrived at once, though we were all asked to book our breakfast time. Staff were, however, courteous and friendly. The food was mostly imaginative, and - where plain - well cooked and served. Two exceptions: halved cherry tomatoes do not make a 'tomato salsa' and failed to provide the necessary contrast to the avocado butter starter; and the house green salad with celery and apple turned out to be watercress with cucumber and rather a lot of spring onion, which was a bad combination, quite bitter. It feels as though it would be a bit of a risk to go again, especially for a special occasion. But i have still given it four stars; with more reliable service and the attention to menu changes noted above, it would indeed tay at four, maybe even five.

I don't often find myself writing reviews for restaurants, but after my family's experience of Wingrove House recently I felt obliged to share my thoughts and feelings about it.We went for Sunday Lunch and there were two choices of roast available, lamb or beef accompanied by a small portion of peas, carrots and cauliflower cheese and a Yorkshire pudding. But no potatoes... If you wanted potatoes you were encouraged to choose from a list of side options available for an additional £3.50. I didn't take up this offer but my brother-in-law and mother did, both to be massively disappointed when 3, rather anaemic looking roast potatoes were slumped on their plates. I am a little bit suspicious that they are engaging in some underhanded profiteering by purposefully removing an integral part of main meals, almost forcing you to order it for an additional fee in the name of 'greater choice'. Funnily enough I saw that on their regular menu, you can order both a burger and fish and chips, but chips aren't actually included! When it comes to drinks, they also suffer from chronic overpricing. £6 for a pint of beer! And this beer isn't a locally sourced artisan crafted drink, but a generic beer you can find on the shelf of your local supermarket or on tap at the pub.The staff while friendly are not smartly dressed for the setting - just in blue jeans with their phones in their back pockets. Overall the service was slow, but I got the impression they were understaffed - taking 2 hours to receive 3 courses. At one point in the meal, I heard the following shouted loudly from the kitchen 'Oh F*** off'. Thankfully much to the embarrassment of one of the staff behind the bar only I heard it. However its not really something you expect to hear at any restaurant. When it comes to their coronavirus prevention measures, the only thing I could gauge that was done was that the tables were separated. No hand sanitiser, no masks or gloves for the staff, no track and trace forms to fill out. Very poor and perhaps even dangerous. And that brings me to the end really, an extremely disappointing and overpriced restaurant that has certainly lost its appeal and charm.

We have regularly used the restaurant over the yearsfor family get togethers & special occasions & have always been impressed by the high standards, quality of the food & the general atmosphere. Our visit last week was however decidedly average. The menu now lacks the excellent choices it previously had & is now more like a grill menu.No bread was put on the table,as before & the lighting as it was set was less than welcoming. It was all the little touches that made it special. The steak was really good but only served with frozen chips & the pork chop was one third fat.Desserts are excellent. The person in charge was friendly but his scruffy jeans would be better suited in a pub.It was busy with people staying in the hotel who were presumably on a deal with dinner & perhaps would have been happy with how things now are.At £45 a head for 2 courses with a couple of glasses of wine each it should be a lot better.Perhaps the new owners are not too bothered, they never reply to any reviews. It would be good if they took on board the feedback,if so we will return.

It was the only place in Alfriston we could find to park so pleased we did. The restaurant has delightful outside seating in beautifully planted garden. The food was something else, we started with olives, 3 of us had summer soup, one of our party had a salad he voted the best salad he had ever had. There was obviously a top chef on hand.

I have been to the Wingrove several times in the evening and have always found the food to be very good.Unfortunately the lunchtime menu was not only strange it lacked imagination and was quite bland.Frankly,I know the Wingrove is better than this and it would be a disservice to not bring to their attention. The upside is that the staff are polite and the restaurant and gardens relaxing and well laid out.The toilets are now beginning to look tired and the dark tiles and Bristan taps, ubiquitous 15 to 20 years ago hint that fresh eyes are needed to keep the very good reputation the restaurant has.

You'll find the Wingrove House at the far end of the 'sleepy' village of Alfriston in the heart of the Sussex countryside. I say sleepy, but the village boasts 4 pubs that all look like they deserve investigating at some time in the future...

Have used this restaurant for years and will continue to do so. The staff are very nice but require a little more training in the art of high class service. This is not a cheap restaurant and the food is very good - the service is a bit amateurish.

We visited here for Father’s Day and the restaurant was rather empty which concerned us a little, we all ordered the Sunday Roast which was rather nice but you would expect it would be nice for the price your paying. A little bit annoyed when the bill came and we paid with card as the waitress just assumed we were paying the service charge and added it to the amount on the card machine, the service wasn’t that great as we kept on going out of our way to get drinks served..

From the moment we arrived the service was brilliant and all the staff made us feel welcome considering we were quite a large party. Nothing was too much trouble and the attention to detail was fantastic even though the restaurant was busy.

Sitting outside for lunch was pleasant but I felt that the restaurant had not maintained its quality since my visit over 4 years ago. The inside dining room has been considerably expanded giving a bland ambiance similar to many eateries rather than the cozy previous area. The service today was slow and delivered without style. The fish and chips tasted average whilst the Club Sandwich was heavy and predictable. It may have been an off day and I have given 4 stars as it was overall an enjoyable experience. However the quality of the cuisine needs to be improved to maintain a reputation for fine dining.

I took my partner to Wingrove last year for his birthday, during the really hot summer. We started our evening with drinks on the pretty terrace, then enjoyed two excellent courses (we can never manage three ...) in the light and spacious restaurant. Service was good. It was only our second visit to the Wingrove and it didn't disappoint. A great way to celebrate a birthday.

My husband and me stumbled across this beautiful restaurant on Sunday after walking on Beachy Head. It was a last minute reservation, they fitted us in without any bother. Very pretty setting and great service. The food was excellent I would definitely recommend visiting if your in Alfriston. I had the chicken on a bed of leeks with celeriac mash and stroganoff sauce delicious, my husband opted for the roast lamb which was equally as good. Will be coming back soon, keep up the fabulous service.

Went for dinner on Saturday night and the food never fails to impress. Service spot in even though they were busy with Christmas parties in. We had Soufflé and venison and salmon and belly pork all cooked to perfection. Bit disappointed though as they used to do a set price for 2 or 3 courses so made it excellent value for money, now everything priced individually.

A very elegant restaurant in a very quaint village. The staff went out of their way to help us. They were responsive and well informed about the variety of items on the menu and especially comfortable making recommendations. Each of the three courses had several unique dishes all locally sourced. I found the escabeche of sardines and Gressingham duck were particularly good. The quality and taste of all the food was outstanding. Wingrove Is a must go to restaurant when you are nearby. I thought the private dining room would be a great place for a special family gathering.

Just recently have purchased vouchers for friends to dine here. Come my birthday and friends asked 'where would you like to eat?'. So here we were on Saturday night, sat outside on a barmy night, could have been abroad. Friendly waitress served us with drinks and menu. Asked if we would like to eat inside or out. The veranda was perfect.(when we left a wall heater was on for other diners). We ordered starters and main. Chicken livers with pineapple chilli jam, goats cheese, smoked salmon. Beautifully presented and tasty. Main - beef, lamb chosen. All locally sourced. Still room for pud - limoncello soufflé, cheesecake and cappuccino parfait. A wonderful evening. Live local but recommend an overnight stay.

Really underwhelmed... the waitress we were served by initially was in filthy trainers with a grubby apron on and couldn't have been less interested in us if she'd tried. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived, but she was huffy and impatient with the children and they really weren't looked after at all well, not even so much as offered a drink and a menu on arrival along with the rest of us - this was a great disappointment as I had been in contact beforehand and asked if they were happy to cater for our 7 and 9 year olds. When I asked her about a menu she just said they could order from the main one, or they could do sausage and chips if there was nothing they wanted! I would really have rather been told that they'd rather we didn't bring the children, as we could have changed our plans and gone elsewhere, as they love the whole restaurant experience of choosing starters (there were none suitable) and ordering for themselves, and this really did ruin it for them. After an hour or so we were served by a different waitress, but she seemed to have a very similar attitude - neither seemed as though they wanted to be there.

We used to come here often, because it was that little bit special. It’s spacious so diners aren’t sitting on top of each other and you can enjoy a conversation without the normal noise in restaurants. There have been changes to the interior decoration and staff. The way we used to chat with the manager and staff, that seemed missing. We were given different menus, some from the previous day so that was a little annoying as some of the party chose food that wasn’t available! It was a shame there were no roaring fires as there was a real chill in the room that evening, although it was lovely looking out towards the church. There used to be nice little touches, such as reading glasses on the display cabinet in case someone forgot theirs, but I couldn’t see these (no pun intended!). The recipe for the bread must have been changed as it was very hard, as was the butter that was almost impossible to spread presumably having just been taken out of the fridge! I had the crispy belly of pork salad, followed by pan fried fillet of beef, the latter being melt in the mouth divine. I like how the menu tells you the source of food, much being locally sourced. This restaurant is £££ in my opinion as only one person had dessert and we only had wine by the glass. What made me absolutely furious was the automatic inclusion of a service charge being added to the bill. Tips should be completely at the discretion of the diners, not management as many feel happier deciding how good the service actually was, and to pay in cash thereby avoiding tax on tips! Very cross about that. Will we rush back? Probably not, I might give it one more chance but no time soon. I was told that the Wingrove was now being managed by the same as Treasure Island and the Beach Deck, so I was surprised by this, and I wonder if there has been a dilution of what used to be Wingrove charm! I hope not.

We came here on a recommendation on a Thursday 2.00 pm lunch treat. Unfortunately it wasn’t great from the start, there wasn’t any heating apart from a struggling log burner and an electric portable, which by the way we managed to sit at the table two feet away and still debated about putting our coats back on. I ordered the roast turkey , which I was told straight away that it was turkey roll not slices of breast but I was fine with that. When it arrived it was two slices of turkey, four parsnips and a small sweet potato, hardly enough for a child, it was tasty but disappointing. So on to desert… we were both going to order the banoffee pie as it’s one of our favourites but after discussing it with the waitress and hearing that it actually came what she called “ deconstructed “ crushed biscuit in one area ice cream on another and a caremelised banana to one side.. hardly banoffee pie as I know and love we opted out and went for the crumble.. can’t go wrong with crumble we thought.. oh dear got that wrong .. who leaves the skins on the pears when making a crumble.. it’s as if the chef is changing the recipe just for the sake of it when not necessary.its a pub not fu fu restaurant.sorry didn’t take any photos.wont be returning but after this review I expect they won’t want us back.

Stayed here for a long weekend and it is really amazing. I didn't know that Queen Elizabeth II was friends with the family and stayed here often. Didn't get the Windsor suite but never the less a really lovely stay in a beautiful hotel. Grounds are great and area really good for beautiful villages. Food very good as is wine. I found the wine selection limited but not really complaining as they were good wines. Our room was at top of hotel but there is a lift so if you have a problem with stairs use the lift. Room very comfortable and great view.
