It's a pretty little old traditional english pub and we had a lovely dinner here last night. The foccacia was delightful and my venison bourgingon was delicious, as was my wife's fish. I greedily chose a fruit crumble which I didn't really need as I was full already but, again delicious! We thought the prices reasonable for the quality of the food. Staff were lovely too.

REALLY enjoyed our meals but cannot believe we didn't take pictures of our actual food lol. Honey boy had the pork medallions and I had the fish and chips - as a former chippy owner I must say the batter was on point! Atmosphere is lovely, staff is lovely. My ONLY criticism would be that there's hand sanitizers in pump bottles on the tables - which look like possibly olive oil or balsamic lol so I wonder how many people have inadvertently pumped hand sanitizer in their food lol lol. But honestly one of the nicest pubs we've been to, the sticky toffee pudding was fantastic and we will definitely go back - highly recommend a visit :)

A truly beautiful, absolutely authentic village pub ( with function room facilities ) that oozes historical atmosphere out of every well- preserved nook and cranny . Like going back in time to visit a beloved relative! The landlord went out of his way to accommodate us and the bar/ waiting staff were friendly and professional. Food was great and served promptly - can't wait for another opportunity to visit. Don't spend your hard - earned money in a bland, corporate chain; just visit The Red Lion, Hooe, it's the real deal. Good old- fashioned nostalgia served up with a smile- Thank you.

Stopped here after a 3 hour drive and ordered 2 'latte' coffees (£3 each). They arrived in doll's house cups with half of the drink slopped in the saucers. Absolutely vile - tasted identical to a sachet of ready-sweetened Aldi economy coffee to which hot water had been added (when asked the waitress said it was 'pod coffee machine' but I've never had pod coffee which leaves sugar granules in the bottom of the cup). If you can't afford a coffee machine use instant such as Millicano and buy a £50 milk frother - infinitely nicer as your current coffee is shameful (if I wanted sugar I would add myself). And for goodness sake, shut the door to the staff area - felt like sitting in a force 9 gale. Zero stars for the coffee but left a 2 star review as the staff were okay and the ladies toilets clean (husband less impressed with the mens). Food looked good but after the coffee we didn't feel like eating with you. Such a nice-looking pub; you could do so much better - either serve half-decent coffee or take it off the menu.

We had been to the pub a couple of times previously and had good meals and enjoyed the atmosphere. Accordingly, we suggested to a couple of close friends that we should try the Sunday roast. Three of us opted for the roast lamb, which turned out to be fatty, grisly and very small portions. The girl who served us asked how our meal had been and we told her how disappointed we all had been with the roast lamb. We had hoped that someone in charge would have come over to apologise for our bad experience, but this did not happen. Sadly, we will not be returning any time soon.

Visited four times whilst staying in nearby Ninfield for a week, twice was just for drinks, once was for Sunday lunch and the other time for lunch. Received a friendly welcome when we stopped in for a drink on our first day in the area which was Saturday and because of this and the reviews previously seen online we decided to book for Sunday lunch for the two of us. Again a great welcome and social distancing etc not a problem at all. I ordered the shellfish linguine and my husband chose roast beef, both meals were generously portioned and both delicious. Puddings were an Apple and blackberry crumble with custard for me and a. Chocolate brownie with ice cream for hubby. The star of the show was for me the crumble. I’m not usually much of a dessert type person but this was lovely with a deep crumbly topping which was crunchy all the way through. What was really nice is that when we visited on the two subsequent occasions we were recognised and greeted warmly. Would heartily recommend that you visit if your in the area. We certainly will next time we’ re there

Having been once before, and having a fabulously delicious, home cooked meal, we decided to give their Sunday roast a try. We phoned and were given the option of 12:30 or 14:30. We booked 12:30. Upon arrival we were given our seat and drinks orders were taken. Menus were produced but there were no starters. Apparently they don’t do starters on Sunday. I couldn’t help thinking that this roast is going to be amazing if you can’t have a starter! We both ordered roast beef. It arrived within minutes which to me felt a bit TOO quick. I have the feeling it’s all pre-prepared and then nuked! 2 roast potatoes which I thought was poor for a £14 roast. One of my roast potatoes was so burnt it was black, not a nice crispy potatoes but charcoaled burnt, the other was barely roasted at all! Heaps of vegetables which filled the plate, which needed to as there wasn’t much else. The meat was not nicely carved, more hacked, and seemed to be one slice cut up a bit. Finally topped with a stale, cardboard like Yorkshire pud. We were very disappointed. Having posted my ‘check-in’ on Facebook at 12:18 I looked and we had finished and ready to leave by 12:46.Sorry Red Lion but this could be so much better.Melanie

Reviews, photos and menus all indicated this was a suitable venue, so we made a booking for a Friday lunch. Walking into the pub it seemed a very friendly place with a real fire at one end of the bar. Our table was reserved with my name written on a slate placemat which was a nice touch. We ordered off the specials menu, both our main course and desert. The food was all excellent, and the beer was kept very well. The service was very friendly as well. I had the Roast lamb with at least 5 fresh vegetables - the roast potatoes were crisp and had been roasted in dripping. Husband chose the baked Hake on a bed of Dauphinoise and a generous helping of spinach. I had a slice of caramel cheese cake with a salted caramel dressing and my husband had a pot of Earl Grey tea. This was a lovely setting and helpful staff. The food was enjoyable but very expensive for a pub meal. That would put me off visiting again Roughly £80 per couple with one drink each. But you cannot knock the quality. If you don’t mind paying over the top feel free in using this pub I Emphasise pub.

Friendly, efficient service. Cosy, unspoiled, traditional English pub. Tender roast venison, excellent roast pork. My son would have liked a little more crackling. Vegetables fresh, seasonal and varied, if a little overcooked. The roast potatoes were exceptional and our request for Yorkshire puddings was gladly satisfied. Very good gluten free brownie - not too sweet. We have eaten here a couple of times before and it is always good.

Was passing through area looking for a decent place to eat. Struck lucky with The Red Lion, Hooe. Wife had Salmon & Cod Fishcakes with a Chilly Sauce, which she enjoyed, I had Sausage & Mash in Onion Gravy, very pleasant, could have been stronger flavour. Our dog was made welcome but sadly no biscuit.

We popped in for a midday meal. The menu and specials covered a really broad offer of food. All of our dishes were tasty and well cooked. Nice pink lamb, tender steak and well cooked fish. We will definitely call in again. At popular times booking is essential as we previously made the mistake of dropping by but were turned away as they were fully booked.

Stopped off here on a whim as in the area. There was a nice feel with a healthy mixture of regulars propping up the bar and a variety of diners. There was a good menu offering game and fish that fitted the feel of the pub- hubby really enjoyed the seafood linguini! The wine list looked interesting but as was driving wasn't able to sample the wears. Will however be returning to do just that

Gorgeous food and view of fields with horse in distance. Dog friendly. Compact toilet with ill fitting seat. Loos are clean, with paper, but tatty. Apparently the peaa are crushed and not mussy and ar

Always go here for a fry up, lovely atmosphere, welcoming staff and the food is of high quality. If you love cake and pudding this is the place to go, really love it, shame it's not closer to my house
