We are regulars at this cafe, usually for breakfast with family or sometimes just call in for coffee and a snack. Today we called in at lunch time and ordered the steak pie with Guinness and mushrooms, chips and mushy peas. 10/10, it was excellent and very tasty. The cafe was busy and it was explained to us that we may have to wait a while... but it was well worth the short wait. Young staff were very attentative and friendly. Off road parking and cafe attached to a small garden centre. Highly recommended.

Friendly little coffee shop serving a wide range of snacks, meals and drinks (including alcoholic drinks). Closes at 4.30 every day except Wednesdays where they are closed all day. Not eaten here but had lots of coffees. Always been fresh and hot. Dog friendly too. Worth a visit. Will try the food next time. Realistic prices too.

I visited as I always do on a Wednesday with my 94 year old mum after she had her hair done, this is the main outing for her each week and she looks forward to it immensely. Unfortunately the lovely staff there told me the cafe will be closed on Wednesday from now on! I can’t imagine it is because it’s too quiet as when we attend all the tables are always full. I really hope that the owner reconsiders their decision as I am sure we will not be the only customers who will not be able to visit again , mum will miss it very much. ☹️☹️ fingers crossed for the future 🤞🏼

This is our third visit to the area and probably our fifth visit to Windmill Cafe. Both the food and service were excellent, as has been our experience on each previous visit. We fully intend to fit in a further visit before returning home this weekend. I had the beef sandwich, with gravy. My wife opted for the chicken sandwich and we each finished with Plum Crumble. Everything was delicious.

(Friday afternoon) Perfect spot for a bite to eat whilst cycling. Was seated quickly especially because there was 12 of us. and food was ok once arrived. Served by a smiley young girl with long brown hair working while others stood not doing anything. Food took a while to come out also. Great place just don’t recommend if over a group of 10.

Fantastic service from the staff and very hearty delicious breakfast. Unfortunately the only table free was on the edge of the dog section. The cafe states it welcomes’well behaved dogs’ but unfortunately the two right behind us kept barking and the owners obviously had no control. Yes I know we were seated in the dog section but when I went to the loo I could even hear the barking in there it was so loud. Unfortunately the staff allowed it to continue and didn’t apologise so won’t be going there again. Have been going there for years too, ever since it was a little shed.

Called at the windmill coffee shop for the second time for a sit down with some friends, the breakfast we had was lovely and the staff which was noticeably all fairly young were excellent and very professional. However it seemed the management didn’t feel the same way about her staff, as she seemed quite short with them, and was bad tempered, which we didn’t like to see. I also overheard a younger looking girl asking another member the price of something, and then seeing her put her own money in the till and having her lunch, it’s a shame to see staff anywhere having to pay for there lunches when they are the ones who make most of it. These days a lot of these types of places have young staff on lower wages and don’t always remember the efforts they put in. It was nice to see that all the staff seemed to have a bond together and provide a good atmosphere in the shop. I hope the management can appreciate them more and not be too hard on them. Overall good, and we will call again.

Had a jacket potatoe and a bacon sarnie, both were nice, hot, well presented and came quickly. Couldn’t fault it really. It’s a bit small and the smell of perming as you walk up the stairs isn’t ideal but once you get past it and into the cafe bit, it’s ok.

Been coming here now for the last five years and since the take over and refurbishment it's just not the same anymore. There's no lack of staff but there's no organisation. When we went today it was surprisingly quiet with just two other tables taken and it took best part of 25 minutes for our meal to arrive. Also a lack of desire from staff to clear emty plates from tables. Last time we came the meal we'd asked for was incorrect and the time before that my partner had to wait 40 minutes for his meal. This is such a shame as we used to look forward to coming here. We will be going elsewhere in future.

Having visited many times previously and enjoyed good food and service today’s visit with a group of cycling friends was a disaster! Not only did it take an inordinate amount of time to produce quite simple fare eg sausage sandwiches etc but when the orders arrived incorrectly we were made to feel that the problem was our fault by the rude teenagers who were providing service! Despite attempting to bring this to the attention of the cafe directly this was met with equal disinterest and rudeness. Never again! There are too many good cafes in the area to warrant another visit. Such a pity with the improved decor.

This was our first visit after the much awaited refurbishment. It felt rather cold, as we were seated near the door, despite a stove nearby. This area was designated the 'dog area', and whilst I do like dogs, think it totally inappropriate to bring dogs into a very busy café, especially when their coats were wet - what a smell! Surely provision could be made to provide an outside shelter for pets? Having had a little moan, would like to turn to the food. Our lunchtime sandwiches, chosen from an extensive menu, were absolutely delicious, very well presented, and reasonably priced. The coffee was excellent, although brought to us before the sandwiches arrived. We should have asked for the drinks to be served alongside or after the sandwiches, and not before (we shall definitely do this next time). The hot food that was being served at other tables looked very tempting too! The car park is huge, albeit in need of some white lines/markers to stop selfish motorists parking in a confusing way. All in all, a very enjoyable visit - great food at reasonable prices - keep up the good wrok!

No está permitido tomar en la zona de fuera, o contra una valla de centro prop jardín en donde podías ver a ellos. Siento que este problema podría abordar o perderán un poco de comercio. Been here lots of times for lunch or a snack - food always good, service getting worse each time until it's become a joke. Total chaos on our recent visit!6 of us called in on Sunday afternoon for a cup of tea and a cake/snack. Cafe only about half full and most of the other customers already eating so why were we told there would be a wait of at least 20 minutes?Drinks came first; finished by the time the first 3 cakes arrived. 2 scones arrived just as the 3 cake-eaters had finished. A good 10 minutes after we'd all finished, the sandwich arrived. 3 youngsters cooking and serving, with no organisational skills whatsoever. Had to ask for everything - for the table to be cleared, spoon for a fruit pie with custard, napkins... I could go on. Someone really needs to take control!Yes, the food is very nice, even though the choice for cakes was very limited, but not worth all the hassle!

My husband and I have always liked this cafe, we visit it with our dogs quite a lot and have always found it dog friendly with easy access to the outside seating area, where we usually sit and have coffee and food. We visited today to find that the seating area outside has been fenced in! At first we thought what a good idea! Until we were told that you cannot go through the outside gate into the seating area, but go through the cafe to get to the outside instead.? Thus ment that we had to take our two very lively dogs through the cafe where tables were situated next to the doors ! It just seems bonkers to take dogs through the midfle of the cafe instead of using the outside gate ! Also I was told very rudely by a young girl that I could not go through the gate but had to go back through the shop and cafe It all seemed bonkers and badly laid out Also the cafe has a lot if bikers calling in, they cannot go through the gate either so they were having to leave there expensive bikes at the front of the cafe unatendered, which did not go down well win them Totally and utterly bonkers

We wouldn't have found this place if friends hadn't told us about it for it it tucked away in the heart of the countryside only 19 minutes from where we live with the added bonus that it is a lovely drive out to get to the place. The cafe is always full - testament to the fact that the food is excellent, not over priced and those serving us are pleasant, friendly and provide the food within minutes of it being ordered. Why this great little cafe is not more well known, I have no idea. There is an outdoor seating area at the back where you can take your dog, too where our dog was provided with fresh drinking water without us having to ask for it. Therefore we think this place is both disability and dog friendly. There are plenty of parking places and alongside the cafe is the plant nursery which has a lovely range of plants and at very reasonable prices, too. It also sells Clover peat compost too - impossible to find anywhere else It is a great shame that it has taken us so long to find this lovely little place but now we've found it we have become regular visitors and intend to let everyone know about it so it may not remain a hidden gem for much longer.Just one comment - I tried in vain to find the opening times on all the websites the cafe is mentioned on but couldn't find them and didn't immediately find it on Trip Adviser. Hopefully one of the enterprising younger members of staff could design a website with this information to hand.

Best small cafe for dog walkers around, small outside seating area. Home cooked food lovely not over priced like some. Dog boarding kennels form part of business. In 54 years one of the few places I would reccomend to anyone. Long may it last and not over expand as they have at Shelley garden centre. See you again today.

There was wasn't a spare table on this Sunday afternoon. We went looking for a coffee shop for tea and cake, though this was more of a cafe than a coffee shop we still enjoyed our cakes.

The Cafe has a dated outlook and fails to grasp the importance of accommodating dog owners, the area is full of people who enjoy walking in the countryside, many of these are responsible dog owners. The owners should visit the award winning cafe and farm shop at Bradfield which is wonderfully clean and dog friendly and always full of families, walkers and their pets. Normally our family would spend about £40 lunch and another £30 in the farm shop so its £70 lost on a Monday afternoon! Time to change your outdated policy.

Worth cycling up to the roof of west yorkshire for the lovely food and service. No guilt about the cooked breakfast either, all grilled, free range eggs etc. Nicely washed down with a pot of Earl Grey tea!! Then downhill most of the way back to Sandal via HighHoyland. Grand day out!!

We visit regularly as part of a cycling training run throughout Summer and Winter. The cafe can get very busy as on a popular cycling route and as there is a garden centre attached and the nearby Royd Moor bird watching lots of visitors. All the food we have had has been lovely, quick service, great value and friendly staff. Garden centre next door to visit and lots of parking. Fantastic home made produce, try the cherry scones they are fabulous. Well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

I've been to the Windmills lots of times for coffee or a snack at lunchtime and have always thought it a very nice cafe. Bright and welcoming, with friendly, smiley staff, it's my favourite cafe in the Penistone area. It's always busy and it's easy to see why. Had an excellent all-day breakfast on my latest visit - good quality ingredients, good pot of tea, good price. What's not to like? Too full to have one of their delicious cakes, so took a scone home for later! Very good indeed!

Popped into the takeaway one on cheepside on mon 5th of feb around 12.50 as had an appointment at 2pm and wanted a quick snack. When I walked in the guy behind the counter was serving someone with a big order, there was nobody else in apart from me. When the big order had left he came to me and asked me what I wanted. I said a cone of chips and he said 1.60 please. He took a 2 pound coin off me, gave me 40p back and then disappeared in the back. I thought he was waiting for fresh chips but then 2 teenagers came in and he served them with chips! I was just about to ask if he had forgotten my order when my phone rang. The guy came back to me and I put my hand up to indicate I was on the phone. When I ended the call he asked me what I wanted! I said I'm still waiting for my cone of chips! He got the chips, handed them to me and said that's 1.60! Unbelievable, the guy needs to attend a memory clinic! He actually accused me of not paying! Won't be calling there again anytime soon!

Well it was an experience. The bloke running the place gave an aura of discomfort with a huge lack of understanding of the English language. I felt sorry for him that the proprietor had left someone in charge that was unable to understand an order. Two customers ended up walking out because they became too frustrated after they had to write down the order and then have guy just staring at them but into the void. I waited as I was simply filling time anyway. Wish I hadn't, the fish was awful, just meh slimy and gross. Not had fish this bad in a long time. Won't be going there again. Also whilst I was there an angry customer came in complaining that he hadn't answered the phone to take orders. The phone was going alot and he just stared at it. From what I gathered, because of his limitations of the language, he ignores the orders.
