We came from Lowestoft to meet a friend who was holidaying in Bury St. Edmund's. Had no idea where to eat. Came across Wilcrofts Cafe & were very glad we did. Sat outside, under shade as very warm. I was VERY pleased they were licensed. 2 glasses of the house white wine was dry & very pleasant indeed. We had the Giant Yorkshire with Sausages, Mash & Gravy. The Special Spiced Chicken with chips & a lovely mixed salad. As not much of a meat eater, our friend had the roast (minus the meat) & gravy, which she said was delicious, she followed this with Apple Pie & Ice Cream, again she said it was delicious. A Coffee , a pot of tea & another glass of wine for me, £53.00 HOW AMAZING IS THAT!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.

We had been in the habit of going to Bill's for breakfast - but sadly it closed down last week. Came across this place online, saw it had good reviews and decided to try it. I had the Eggs Benedict - the Hollandaise sauce was tasty and plentiful and the poached eggs cooked perfectly. Husband had the full English, which was fine too. Very prompt and friendly service. Nice, clean loo. We will definitely go again.

Never noticed this place before but saw it from a distance. So today I decided to treat myself to lunch. It's pretty basic but it was busy. The staff were super and the food was very good. Pretty extensive menu but treated my self to an all day breakfast. It was lovely, Everything obviously freshly cooked and the sausages were a cut above bog standard you often get. I had a smoothie and it was freshly made for me. Well worth a visit for an honest meal of good food and service.

Lunchtime snack and drinks. Seated downstairs quickly an ordered food and drinks. The drinks came quickly, I was told the best coffee in Bury. A great strawberry milkshake which when tasted it was delicious. Two jacket potatoes one cheese and one baked beans the were large so make sure your hungry, good value for money. These were large potatoes cooked well with tasty toppings. With a mixed side salad. The tomato soup was forgotten until it was notice I was sitting there with no food. This was quickly brought over with an apology from the lady server. Only trouble it was rushed so the soup was hardly warm. A new soup was brought over a bit warmer but not hot. But decided to keep it the soup was nice and the bread roll was nice and tasty. Yes would go back again. Staff generally polite and hard working except man (manage?) who had no interaction with me not asking how the meal and saying sorry for the soup issue.

We sat outside and a waitress promptly took our drinks order. Upon serving the drinks she took the food order. It wasn't complicated; 3 orders for jacket potatoes and one all day breakfast. After that it went downhill fast. We waited and waited and waited. Half an hour later we questioned the waitress who said she would check on our order. She returned and apologised saying it wouldn’t be too much longer. Another 15 minutes went by. Still no food appeared. We paid for the drinks and left! Not really any apologies from anyone. Wouldn’t bother visiting again! The all day breakfast lived up to its name - it took all day to arrive! 🤣

For some reason the sausage and bacon had been chopped up into small chunks .I'm 63 not a small child ! And the baguette was sweet , if you licked the crust it was like it had been dipped in sugar syrup! The sausage was good quality, but I would have liked to bite it myself and every time I picked it up the filling fell out. I did mention the sweetness of the baguette and was told " it may have a brioche dressing on it !! What's all that about ?Anyway we will not be returning again . Sorry .

I've eaten in here many many times over the years but it has lost what it once had!In February I popped in for breakfast and after half an hour asked where my breakfast was and they had missed my order somehow!About a month ago I called in for lunch and had chilli and potato wedges (used to be my favourite) and I had the smallest amount if chilli I've ever had and the wedges were tiny and burnt. Not everything is freshly cooked for sure, despite the always long wait.Cleaning looks like it's non existent and if the girls spent as much time cleaning and serving as they do chatting, then it would be spotless. Dress sense and Hair nets would be a great idea too.Regarding someone's previous post I too spotted the huge cobwebs hanging overhead!I'm afraid my last visit was indeed my last.

We went for lunch on a Saturday , midday. It wasn't busy .... This should've been a warning. We ordered two teas and two all day breakfasts , a simple order. The teas came out nearly straight away ...but by the time the food came thirty minutes later we'd drunk the tea and sat bored .We read a notice saying that during busy times food is cooked fresh and may take longer ....hmmm. For a start mine was missing a piece of bacon. The butter potion had also melted into the plate .The mushrooms looked as if they'd been cooked first thing that morning and warmed up lots of times ... Wrinkly and dry. While we were waiting patiently I noticed a large cobweb over the picture in front of me . This made me look down at the skirting board /ledge and ran my finger along it .this was very dirty , definitely hadn't been cleaned for ages !Also I noticed one waitress had her hair down , near the food ,unhygienic :-)Once we'd eaten we went to pay . Before 11.30 you get tea included . We arrived at about 11.25 ... When I informed the waitress she'd over charged me , it was obvious I'd inconvenienced her ...We won't be returning ....

One of the waitresses was appallingly rude to my wife and father, and the food was terrible too - avoid like the plague!

Really disappointing experience. Recently diagnosed as coeliac and needing to do a gluten free diet. So many places have been great and others helpful but the waitress here wasn't having any of it. When I arrived with friends I asked if she could help me with what I could eat from the menu as I couldn't have gluten. I meant let me know about the ingredients. Before I finished my sentence she abruptly said "we don't cater for any allergies. None. Sorry you won't be able to have anything" and walked off. How embarrassed did I feel?! I stayed and had a cup of tea as my friends had ordered but it was so uncomfortable and I won't be back. So word of warning to anyone with any allergy or intolerance....don't bother.

Haven't been for a very long time but on a visit to Bury St Edmunds decided to eat there as the food had always been nice. I should have turned around when l saw the state of the chefs whites, well they weren't white, it didn't look like they had been washed for a long time. We sat down and ordered the food, and while waiting we noticed that someone from the kitchen was at the take away counter, picking up food for a plate, with her hands, she wasn't wearing any gloves or using tongs, again this should have sent out alarm bells, but as we only ordered baked potatoes we presumed they would be OK.The potatoes were cold and one didn't taste very nice so it was left. We should have complained, but to be honest, we couldn't be bothered, as we didnt think it would have made any difference.A few hours later, one of us had severe stomach pains and a upset stomach, which has lasted for hours now. The standard of food and hygiene is unacceptable and if this was any other time, a phone call to the food safety standards would have been top of the list.I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat there.

Have visited this Cafe on many Sunday mornings for breakfast and each time have been very satisfied. I've always gone for the vegetarian full English option with scrambled eggs and it's always been delicious. Will be returning when back in the area. Helpful, polite staff and a filling, tasty breakfast. What more could you ask for?

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Very rude landlord not at all sympathetic to an autistic young adult whom had never been in a pub before wasn’t sure what he was doing, was told to leave as he didn’t speak to the landlord on entry and didn’t order a drink straight away he was finding his bearings as being autistic was in a very unfirmiliar atmosphere
