Wigmore Hall is one of the best recital halls anywhere. Large enough to have serious talent perform, but small enough that even the seats right at the back and in the balcony have excellent acoustics. Add to that a good location, decent bar and seats that can accommodate the widest of bottoms and it's a winner.

The hall is lovely, what is really UNACCEPTABLE is this £4 booking fee when I tried to book a ticket online. This put me off and I did not get the ticket, the booking fee, if there is any, should not be more than some pence or around a pound, that I'd understand, this was 15% of the ticket price, what's going on????

Wigmore Hall is undoubtedly one of my favourite venues in London for classical music. Its intimate size creates the perfect setting, offering an immersive experience without sacrificing the beauty and elegance of the hall. Despite being smaller than some other concert venues, it consistently attracts world-class talent, making it a cultural gem in the heart of the city. The facilities are well-maintained, and the staff are always friendly and professional, contributing to an overall excellent experience. One of the most remarkable aspects is the programme offering £5 tickets for many performances to people aged 35 and under. It’s an incredible initiative that makes high-quality performances accessible to a wider audience. We’re incredibly lucky to have a venue like Wigmore Hall in London, and it’s a place I will always treasure.

Last night, I experienced something that made me question why people still go to listen to performances of fine music from far ages. Should it be craving for the lost craft that once strove for perfection, or is it a ritual that became empty with time? I was sat in the middle of Wigmore Hall, paid top seats, ready to enjoy Schubert sung and accompanied by some of the greatest interpreters, sure about the answer. Almost immediately after the performance started though, an annoying, irregularly intervalled bleep in the background coming from the right side started making it impossible to focus on any other note. I'm quite sure it came from a recording device fixed on the wall, pointed at the stage. Audience started to turn their head, try to cover the offended hear. No-one dared to interrupt the pianist and the tenor: they groaned very quietly, feeling trapped from that torture planned to last for one hour and a half without interval. My group of four was the exception. We left the hall in between songs. The Wigmore Hall staff, preoccupied we could disturb the (already disturbed) performance, accompanied us closer to the exit. They said they couldn't interrupt the performance (or should I say the ritual) to investigate a resolution, even though they acknowledged the problem. Going back to the original question: why places like Wigmore Hall even exist? If it's not for audiences to enjoy the highest music, is it all now down to an empty liturgy made of prominent names shareable on electronic devices, over electronic platforms, where an algorithm filters out machine bleeping and tortured audience groanings? It seems the answer in Wigmore Hall is clear. I hope the answer in other venues can still be different, despite this times. And if you read this and one day you find yourself in a similar situation, please consider leaving if the venue is fighting against you enjoying the performance. Be polite with music, not with whom failed to make you enjoy it.

With all the marble, dark wood and red velvet, it's a bit like being put in a time machine to fin de siecle Vienna, or being an onlooker in a Stefan Zweig novel. Some people might find the atmosphere over-formal, but really the point is the delivery of elite chamber music. When I was last there I saw a top European quartet for £18 and the dude in front of me leapt out of his seat at the end and bravo'd so enthusiastically maybe Leos Janacek himself heard it. I mean what do you get for £18 nowadays anyway, perhaps a modest round of drinks? Also, they have an artistes entrance. And whenever you go there you feel young.

I am a Bostonian who spends about 80 nights a year in London. In May 2024 my partner and I had dinner at the Wigmore Hall restaurant before a 7:30 PM concert. We arrived avout 6:15 PM Although it did not appear to be more than six other parties for dinner, we were told that the long time getting served was due to everyone ordering at once -- which one would expect for a restaurant which is part of a famous performance hall. The value of the meal was relatively low compared to other dinners we've had with a total bill of about 50 pounds per person. We will stick with having dinner before a performance at one of the places nearby on Regent's Street

Every seat has a good view of the stage, and the venue is impeccably well kept and tidy. Tickets are well priced, and for under 25s are often free. Under 35s also get discounted tickets. Arrived at about 6pm, restaurant was almost empty, but staff were welcoming and offered us a bar or A la carte restaurant menu. Chose A la carte menu, 2 courses for £30, 3 for £40. Sat at a nicely -laid table for 2, staff were welcoming and attentive, so far so good. We were presented with menus and served promptly with drinks, offered a choice of rolls and butter and our orders were taken in a polite and friendly manner. The starters were well-presented and flavoursome. The main courses (both fish- cakes) were fine, but unexciting. After this, the waiter offered us coffee, and we asked to see a dessert menu, at which point his attitude changed and told us we should have ordered all courses at once because it runs like a train and they needed to be ready for the performance at 7.30. We told him nobody had said anything about that to us, and he justified the position further, saying that anyone who arrived after 6.45 is only offered the bar menu (it was 6.50). However, he said they’d make an exception and took our dessert orders! We waited and waited and the restaurant filled up with pre-concert customers from 7pm. We were only able to attract the waiter’s attention at 7.15 or so and he assumed we wanted the bill (we’d given up on the idea of dessert by then as the concert did indeed start at 7.30), so he arrived with the payment machine and a bill for 2 x 2 courses @£30 each, drinks and 2 x 1 course @ £25 EACH! for desserts that they hadn’t brought, bringing the total to £125! Fortunately they recalculated the bill and we paid just in time to get to the concert, but what a disappointment after a promising start!

The first course was not served until 6.55 p.m. At 7.20 the bells for performance were ringing and we had no time to eat our main course, so it was waiting for us in the interval, but the time was inadequate to finish. The soup was cold and the fishcakes uninspiring. What happened to the efficiency of yesteryear?
