Richard was brilliant, so polite and attentive, did everything with a smile. The service was quick also, turnaround for drinks and food was better than expected on a Saturday afternoon. We ate from the lunch menu so didn’t get to have the whole experience but overall a great place to go!

Great food, great location. Staff is rude. I asked for a candle to be lit. First the staff makes fun of you and thinks you don’t notice. When asking again, I get a very rude response that candles are not lit by staff on weekdays?!? Why are they on the table then? The food was nice though. We love the sticky toffee pudding although we have to say it varies in quality. The pie with chicken was delicious. The spices on the nuts are not my taste. I had the feeling these spices where not the intended spices. They don’t match with nuts. As we had varying experiences the last 3 visits and especially not a very positive experience with the staff, we’ll look for another place next time.

Last night I attended this restaurant after an outstanding meal here the week before. I had the best fish and chips this side of London! The extremely lovely staff provide outstanding service as usual. I regularly go out for a meal up in the Balegate and the wig and mitre is second to none! Worth every penny! Outstanding food at a reasonable price served by lovely genuine people as always! can't fault the place I will definitely be visiting again very soon Richard

A pleasant venue with nice layout, quite cosy. Unfortunately the prices are ludicrous. £4.40 for a lemonade and lime. £3.20 for a single mug of tea (no teapot). Food is good but also expensive.

Was recommended the Wig & Mitre by a taxi driver and it didn't disappoint. Great service from Amy & Kai (sorry if I've got your names wrong). The fresh 1/2 sourdough bread with butter and olive oil was a real 'eyes wide open moment' when it arrived but was absolutely lovely to nibble with my '49 Squadron' beer. The pie of the day - pork, cider and something else was delicious along with veg, mash and gravy 😍 I would recommend the food served here based on this visit.

Oh my god. What an incredible meal and overall experience. I was greeted well at the bar. Had a lovely pint of bitter, but the food was amazing. I had the carrot soup starter which was lovely and sweet. The fish and chips I had as main course was arguably the best I have had. The batter was so incredibly crispy. I am overwhelmed. Well done.

My husband has been diagnosed with diverticulitis. He is experiencing a flare up and has to eat bland but tasty food. Today we needed lunch on our way to Hull from Peterborough. We chose the Wig and Mitre because they had a fish dish on the menu and I liked the sound of the vegetarian option. My husband explained to Richard, the barman, that he needed plain fish and mashed potatoes with gravy. The chef, Fletcher, offered him grilled haddock with mashed potato and cauliflower. Richard apologised for the lack of colour in the dish but my husband was delighted with his meal. It was tasty but unlikely to irritate the inflammation. I chose the Turmeric-Roasted Cauliflower Steak with spiced potatoes, chimichurri, pomegranate seeds & harissa coconut yoghurt. This was amazing. The ‘steak’ was huge but well cooked. The combination of tastes, textures and colours was delicious and satisfying. For dessert, I had Coconut and Lime Panna Cotta, with mixed fruit compote, biscotti & mint. The biscotti was a little hard so I soaked it in the compote. The panna cotta was soft and wobbly with a mild coconut taste. The compote was sweet and sharp. It was lovely to have a dessert that was created in the kitchen, not bought in.

What a huge disappointment. We had booked a table, no problem. We ordered our drinks; bottle of wine, pint of beer and a zero alcohol beer, no problem. Then we put our food order in. The waitress came back to tell us there was no crab on sourdough toast so two of us changed our choice... again only for her to come back to say there was only one scotch egg (ordered by someone else in the group) so changed order again. Then the main course order. The waitress came back...no sea bream, no honey roast ham, no flat iron half chicken (three out of four not available). We were never told things weren't available (or even what was available) when we were given the menus or the order was taken. Apparently the waitress was only finding out what wasn't available when she entered the choices into the till/order system. I'm sure you can imagine that we were not impressed; it was the birthday meal for one of the four. We decided to not have anything so finished the beers, put the screw lid on the remaining wine and said we were leaving. We paid for the drinks (best part of £30) and left. As I said, it was one of if not the most disappointing restaurant/bar experiences we've ever had.

Wendy and I were married at Lincoln registry office and had arranged a wedding breakfast at the Wig and Mitre. The Castle and cathedral is a wonderful setting. Tina had been so attentive and professional in organising the meal and the private room for 20 of us. She made everything run very smoothly. The food was excellent of course. I cant thank Tina and the staff enough for making this a truly memorable occasion. I give the venue and staff 10 out of ten for the whole affair, from initial contact right through to the wonderful day we had. I will add photos when everybody has sent them in to me. Thank you so much for a wonderful day Tina.

So, I came from London not knowing my surroundings much (typical tourist, I know) and, on the scenic walk back from the castle on Steep Hill (caution: it's actually VERY steep), I stumbled almost literally onto the gorgeous pub that is The Wig& Mitre. I cannot recommend it enough, the food was fantastic, the local hospitality was so warm and friendly and the drinks very reasonably priced. I recently enjoyed visiting York, a charming city with stunning architecture. On the way back home, I stopped at Lincoln. After enjoying the sights at Lincoln, I stopped by to see my sister-in-law, who is expecting next month. It was a delightful visit, likely the last before she welcomes her new baby. We decided to cap off the visit with a drink and some nibbles at a local pub. Upon arrival, the bar staff instructed us to head to the second floor and choose any unreserved table. We found a cosy corner, perfect for relaxing. However, our initial contentment was soon disrupted. A bartender on the second floor unexpectedly shouted across the room to acknowledge our arrival, startling us and other patrons. After waiting about 5-10 minutes without receiving menus, I approached the bar to inquire, only to be accused of rudeness for not properly checking in upon selecting our table. Despite my attempts to clarify the misunderstanding, citing the instructions we received downstairs, the bartender argued rather than explain the establishment's policies and assisted us. Not wanting to cause any stress for my pregnant sister-in-law, we decided to leave the pub. Having travelled extensively across the EU, the US, and other regions, I've never encountered such an unwelcoming experience simply for following seating instructions. Travellers visiting this pub should be cautious of the bearded bartender, whose lack of professionalism and courtesy significantly dampened our experience. ______________________________________ Thank you for your reply. I truly appreciate your response and understand the importance of supporting your team. I just wanted to clarify that at no point did we intend to cause any disruption or misunderstandings. When we arrived, the bartender downstairs didn't instruct us to check with anyone regarding seating. A gentleman at the lower bar kindly informed us that we could grab a table and make ourselves comfortable, and that we would be served. The table we chose wasn’t dirty, though it was missing two sets of forks, which we didn’t think was a problem. If we did make any mistake in terms of seating, we would have greatly appreciated a polite approach, perhaps explaining, “Sorry, this table isn’t quite ready yet,” or something along those lines. That would have been helpful and easily understood. But he didn't, he just ignored us until we approached him at the bar after waiting for 5-10 minutes as I have mentioned before. He could politely tell us to move elsewhere and do not cause any issues by just nicely explaining the situation, but again, he failed by raising his voice and getting in to argument. While I understand the need to support your staff, we were left with the impression that we weren’t welcome, and that is the main concern I wanted to raise. I hope this feedback can be useful for future situations. Feel free reviewing CCTV, or provide me with the phone number for further explanation Thank you again for your time and consideration.

Having read the excellent reviews before we chose here we thought it would be a great place for lunch. We found it hugely disorganised from the outset. No one knew the numbers who were in, so they just sent people upstairs to try and find a table. Having sat down in a room upstairs, we ordered our food and told the server we were in here. We were made to feel awkward 45 mins later (while still waiting for our food) by whom I can only assume was the manager, aggressively accusing us of opening the curtain to sit in here and making it feel like was it was our fault for sitting on some tables that were 'upstairs'. Some serious customer service training needed and better organisation in general. We were made to feel extremely unwelcome and uncomfortable. If I stopped here it would be pretty damning, but let's continue. I must say it is the most over priced food I've seen in a long time. Small portions for big prices. The crab was actually crab paste and not served on sourdough bread as described. Trade descriptions act anyone? Certainly not worth it in my book. In fact, I had to call into the fish and chips shop for a portion chips afterwards to actually feel full.

overpriced food and awful had flat iron open steak on sourdough sandwich asked for medium, well it was that over ot was.like chewing a shoe, it was just white bread not sourdough, 5 tiny slices of steak and the sauce that came was nasty it was mushroom and Stilton it came in a pot and there was a 1cm layer of grease on it. when we complained even the staff member turned up his nose and said what is that, my husband had crab on sourdough with pickled cucumber and had rinds of skin on like they had peeled it an d put the peelings on the plate. When he asked where his chips where the waitresses got all haughty and said he'd not ordered any and continued to argue then just walked off! came back and slammed them on the table!! we had checked the menu and what we had paid and they has definitely Bern ordered. It's a nice old building but that's how they lure us poor unsuspecting souls in as not enough care had been taken with the food or customer service don't be tempted by its location. It came, and almost everything was cold And for the price, the portions were very small. I did mention my fish and chips were cold and was given a 10% discount on my meal but to be honest I would have preferred it to be hot. If we had been a large party it may have been a factor of trying to serve us all together but we were only four. And nearly £100 later we left feeling very dissatisfied.

Stopped in for a drink on Friday night. Town was very busy due to the concert at the Castle. We ordered drinks at the bar and couldn’t find any seats so we headed upstairs and asked a waitress if we could sit at one of the used dining tables that wasn’t cleared down yet whilst we finished our drinks. She said yes, no problem as long as we weren’t planning on sitting long. No sooner had we sat down, a waiter with a shaved head and a long beard approached and asked if we’d like a menu. We explained the above to him and he called us all a restaurant’s worst nightmare then said his colleague is unreliable and doesn’t know what she’s doing half the time, before walking off. What an absolute melt… I feel sorry for anyone having to work with him. We couldn’t finish our drinks fast enough, so I guess his tactic worked. Won’t be back there any time soon and hope the management team read this and adjust his attitude.

Lovely friendly pub, made to feel very welcome, good banter between the competing quiz teams... waitress service (Charlie) was prompt and courteous, nothing was any bother, quiz host was articulate, funny and welcoming too. Looking forward to returning next weekend before the Madness gig 😊

Sadly, slow service despite a quiet pub. Bread, (special) butter and oil took 30 minutes to arrive (without its butter). Squid starter arrived overcooked and Luke warm (and not lightly dusted as per the menus description...more heavily caked in breadcrumbs and cooked until chewy and unpleasant). Bream papillote was such a small portion at £18.95 I wondered if I was supposed to wait for side vegetables (Especially since I'd not had a starter). My partner had a large bowl of dry, tasteless gnocchi which benefitted from a nice piece of chicken. Sadly we were also crammed in next to another table of two, despite the place being empty. We were right next to the stairs, so we were charmed by the staff moaning about having to go up and down every few minutes. (Other than a male staff member who ran up the stairs and bounced between the levels from the seated area to the upper bar... making us jump). Strangest meal out in a very very long time. Such a shame.

Had a fantastic meal last Saturday and everything was so reasonably priced. Special thanks to our waitress, Charlie, who was super-efficient, attentive and good humoured. The restaurant was heaving as there was a concert at the Castle, but Charlie was still smiling. Will definitely return - especially if they're still serving the flat-iron steak!

Disappointed with the overall experience yesterday evening. A 25 minute wait for bread nibble that was missing the butter. Starters came about 15 minutes later and the squid was cold and, overcooked and not at all lightly dusted. The Ndjua scotch egg was very nice however. Sea bream was nice but very small, 2 olives, 2 tomatoes and a few potato halves. Supreme of chicken was nothing like expected. Sun blush tomatoes were just cherry tomatoes and only 2 of them. Parmesan cream was like beurre blanc with no seasoning. Could not taste pesto or parmesan. Disappointed. Other people seemed to be enjoying their food but we weren't impressed. Won't return.

Good food in this restaurant but deplorable service. After a good start, the waiter disappeared and we had to go to the bar each time to order, pay...

Warm welcome, great food at a competitive price. Drinks were well priced as well. Live music also made for a cracking atmosphere 👌

Had a really nice meal at Wig and Mitre, food was excellent. Was served by Charlie, she was friendly and was so helpful and helped choose which cocktails to try. The cocktails looked amazing and tasted so good. Would definitely come again

Me and my boyfriend came here for a few drinks last Friday night, there was live music on and overall a really good vibe. We enjoyed taking to the young girl on the bar called Anna, she was very chatty and made our experience 10/10

Great experience, me and my mates came in for a few drinks and despite being near the time of the kitchen closing they were able to do us a few bowls of chips, got chatting to Anna on the bar she was very friendly and bubbly.

Absolutely fantastic food. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. I'd especially like to mention our waitress Dawn, she was so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. She advised us on the menu and took our order. We opted for the burger and chips. Really tasty. There were plenty of choices and will definitely be back to try more! This pub does not fail to impress. Hopefully Dawn will be working again when we return, she is the kind of person that brightens up the dullest day!

What a disappointment We attended here as a foursome as they profess to having the best food in the area. Sadly this is not the case We were slightly early to arrive but were greeted and sent upstairs where there was an array of dirty plates and glasses littering the bar, not a problem as they could’ve been busy but there were more empty Tables than full ones. We were then seated and ordered drinks I had the mojito which for the price was not value for money It should’ve been mint but was something resembling water cress instead . We all ordered beef and this took 35 mins to arrive and when it did the beef was tough like it had been reheated several times and the roast potatoes couldn’t be cut and both were just about inedible. all plates had 2-3 thinly sliced carrots and a very small portion of green beans we also ordered courgette fries which were cold on arrival. Nobody came to ask How our meals were and it was clear there were other problems as one table got up And walked out and the other three had all complained, we noticed one family Of four were missing meals and the children ate after their parents. Absolutely shocking wig and mitre stop making claims of the best food in the area when you quite simply Are most definitely the worse !! We paid £90 and had one meal removed from the bill which still wasn’t enough.

I ordered Sirloin steak rare. The first piece of meat that was placed in front of me was so thin that it was impossible for the cook to do anything other than well done, the waitress took it back and presented a piece of meat that was slightly thicker and was almost rare - I was hungry and decided that I would make do. Regrettably the steak was full of gristle and was barely edible. We won’t be going back!!

Our club were absolutely spoilt last night as the Magna Carta provided an excellent 3 course Christmas meal for us.The service was efficient and the staff courteous and polite. The food was lovely and hot,we couldn’t expect anything better. Well done to all the staff who carried it out on a really busy night in the cathedral quarter of our lovely city.

About time you got with the times and did table service. 1 person serving, at least 15 people at the bar. Joke of a bar
