Today I had a late lunch with my family at the Wig & Mitre and I am so disappointed. We knew we had to wait, which is fine if you are going to get good food. We knew it was not the cheapest, which, again, it is fine if you are going to get good food. But no. No good food. I had the jerusalem artichoke risotto and it was severely overcooked. And It arrived almost cold. The cook cannot not notice that the rice consistency is completely gone. The cabbage (the side of the sausage and mash) was barely boiled. It was raw! Impossible to eat. We waited almost an hour, I am not fussy and I was so hungry, my kids were hungry as well so I didn't protest. Also, no one came to our table so ask if everything was right (perhaps they suspected something?!). The penne of the kids menu were also so overcooked and the sauce was spaghetti hoop like.. but spaghetti hoops do not cost 7 pounds! Clients do not deserve that, pubs should encourage people to enjoy life and spend their money on good food and drinks. Next time I will eat at home. Which is not what the food and beverage business would like to hear.. right?!

Drinks menus don't have prices - which is annoying and pointless. When I did enquire about one of the drinks advertised they rudely and abruptly said they didn't have loads of stock space so didn't sell it. So why advertise it. Rude staff and didn't stay. Wouldn't return ** Edit, you say it's a company menu - then why not explain that on the menu. I'd prefer to browse a menu than feel rushed looking at the bar. Also - only the wines had the prices against them which is a bit bizarre? Why not have prices against all other drinks. Literally never visited a place like it.

I've been enjoying a visit to the 'Wig' for over 40 years, it's always had great food and ales regardless of owner or landlord. We visited the Sunday of St George day parade, having booked earlier that morning. We were initially seated to the rear in the family area, but after enquiring with Dawn she moved us into the front window so we could watch the world go by. Dawn turned out to be an excellent front if house host. Accommodating to our odd request. She and Rick were fantastic i their service and their banter. The venue was beginning to get quieter than it had been earlier and both of them must have been looking forward to some downtime. But they were both extremely chatty and informative. Dawn, especially was on top form. The food was just the ticket. Freshly cooked and just enough to leave our appetites sated. The only downside whilst not detracting from the pub, being no beer garden. It appeared nearly every other venue had one or were allowed seating kerbside. I would whole heartedly recommend visiting this pub, to eat, to chat, to laugh, or just to watch the world go by. Thank you Dawn & Rick. Like Arnie, I'll be back.

Popped in for drinks and a light lunch. Sadly we both ended up with food poisoning from the calamari. It’s impossible to be certain about the link, but the timing was indicative, and the muesli, blueberries and coffee we had for breakfast were unlikely to be the cause.

Where do I start?! Just amazing. We were looking for somewhere to have our Wedding meal/evening. After hours of searching for somewhere and getting quite fed up with the lack of quality customer service.... Tina from the Wig & Mitre saved the day. Tina and Martin's response to our enquiry just stood out way above the others. It was welcoming, friendly and polite with a no-pressure approach. Tina called and went through everything and was completely flexible to our needs the entire time. We visited Wig & Mitre before booking (as recommended by Tina) and we loved the place. Can't believe we didn't know about it beforehand. To cut a really long (but successful review) short - The Wig & Mitre Team have all been lovely. They honestly did so much for us, were personable and likeable. Tina was on hand and adaptable to my last minute seating plan changes and food additions - nothing felt like too much hassle for them. Tina and Dawn decorated the place so lovely, we were so pleased. All of the staff on our wedding eve were so friendly and approachable. Shout out to Rick and Ann. The food was delicious! Not one single bad word was said about the food. The guys at Wig & Mitre knew exactly who was eating what and took the food to each person without shouting out meals. Quick service at the bar (we hired upstairs). We played our own music through their sound system. I really couldn't have wished for a better venue and Martin & Tina at the Wig & Mitre deserve all the success. I really recommend booking for any event. It's not often you don't reflect and wish to have changed something but on this was perfect. Thanks again guys - hope you're feeling the love. The Scotts x

I went and asked for advice on food, he proceeded to say: ‘I don’t know what you like, do I? And went on to shout back and forth with the girls working just loud enough for my friend and I to hear… He then went on to make comments about my accent (bear in mind that English is not my first language) and made a point to let us know that he emailed the manager to get ahead of any potential problems. As I said, a shame as they do serve very good food…

The Wig and Mitre is hands down the greatest pub in Lincoln, and it’s not hard to see why. Perched at the top of Steep Hill, it’s the perfect place to catch your breath after the climb, offering a welcoming retreat with a fantastic atmosphere. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the incredible manager, Martin. Always ready with a smile and eager to help, Martin ensures that every visit feels personal and memorable. His dedication to making everyone feel at home is what truly makes this pub a standout. Steeped in local history, the Wig and Mitre has a unique charm that you can feel the moment you step inside. The rich heritage of the pub adds to its warmth and character, making it a great spot to soak in some local culture while enjoying a pint. And let’s not forget about the food, simply outstanding! Whether you’re after a comforting meal or a light bite, the menu never disappoints, offering something for everyone. But at the end of the day, it’s the people that make the place. From Martin to the friendly regulars, the welcoming vibe and community spirit are what keep me coming back. If you’re ever in Lincoln, the Wig and Mitre is a must-visit, where history, great food, and exceptional people come together.

Today’s Wig is still one of the nicest pubs in Lincoln, it attracts nice people, very cosy, the food was well cooked and presented. The live music appreciated and the staff worked very hard to make sure everything was as it should be, thank you! …. Original review-To be honest, not as nice as it used to be. The Wig and mitre used to do lovely food. But now it’s just normal pub food. Very limited choice. The fish in the fish and chips was actually very good but I think the chips just frozen chips. This used to be the best pub in Lincoln. The food this time round wasn’t very good. I had a really over cooked, dry and very meagre chicken burger that was £15!!! It wasn’t even McDonald’s standard or size. The only reason I didn’t send it back was that it took 45mins to arrive and it would have probably taken another 45 to be replaced. We go to the Wig every Tuesday for quiz night, which is one of the best in town, I'm involved in another one on Sundays so need to be impartial! it is hosted by local DJ John Marshall ably assisted by Kezza and it is great fun The food is good quality pub food always served in reasonable time and piping hot and you can alter bits i.e. swap mash for chips. Though the availability of pies is now a running theme. But what really makes this pub excellent are the staff Martin, Hannah and Dawn in particular. For example last night Hannah asked if a gent Neil could join us, he had been in the night before and she got talking to him. Turns out he was from The Wirral and this was his 1st trip since losing his wife just before Christmas and he loved pubs and quizzes so Hannah suggested he came back next night for their quiz and said I know a team you can join, and we were happy to have him. Talk about going above and beyond thx Hannah. The evening ended eventfully with a small fire in the gent loo, hand drier overheated, but the staff were cool calm and collected escorted everyone out swiftly, you would expect that but I have seen happen and people panic, well done team. See you next Tuesday

tl:dr: Had to leave after waiting 2 hours for food. Emails to the establishment regarding the experience ignored. ------ My sisters and I booked the festive menu for 4 people for Monday 23rd December. We were asked to email over which courses we planned on ordering in advance, which we did, and requested a quiet room as one of my sisters suffers from migraines. We had also emailed ahead asking about wheelchair access, but received no response. We also received no response to emails regarding dietary requirements. On arrival we were told that we'd "Unfortunately arrived at the same time as a table of 10 and a table of 12". Early red flags that we wished we had heeded. We were seated around 6:30pm and after a rather inappropriate 30 minute wait we received our drinks. Despite being seated in a quiet room, the door leading to the room slammed every time it shut, banging loudly every time staff came in or out. 50 minutes after we'd been seated I enquired as to when we should expect to receive our starters. One hour after arriving our starters arrived and, once we had finished these, so began another long wait. We asked multiple times for updates as to how much longer we should expect to wait for our food, but on each occasion no one came back to us. Another hour passed, two hours since first being seated, and we had still not received our main meals. Despite the fact we had emailed our orders in advance and pre-booked the table, we were still waiting at 8:30pm for our main meals. As my sister was now beginning to feel unwell and could not wait any longer, as well as the rest of us being now tired, hungry and fed up from waiting, I went to inform the wait staff that my party was leaving as my sisters got their coats. The main bar area was chaos. A young man ran past me, out of breath and holding plates of food, saying he'd be with me soon. Another young lady came to the bar, stressed and out of breath, and in a panic said she'd also be with me soon. The atmosphere was tense and overwhelming. I'm not sure what issues were going on behind the scenes, but the team was clearly stressed, overworked and understaffed. It was actually appalling the conditions these young people were left to operate under. Eventually I managed to talk to someone and received a verbal apology. We were not charged for the food and drinks that did turn up - and I wouldn't have expected to have been - and left. Frustratingly we were told that we could not be reimbursed our £10 deposit. I live in London and only manage to see my family every 4-6 months or so. When I do come home my sisters and I meet up for a family meal. It's a special occasion for all of us and requires a lot of pre-planning particularly as one of my sisters has two young children and the other two unfortunately suffer with long-term, chronic health conditions. This meal is the highlight of my trip home. On this occasion we looked at many restaurants specifically for a celebratory Christmas meal and were so excited at what Wig & Mitre had to offer, especially as I'm vegan and often struggle to find an establishment that caters to a plant based diet. It was therefore gutting that our evening turned out as it did and that we ended up leaving hungry, tired and disappointed. After our ordeal I reached out to Wig&Mitre via two separate email addresses and after a month - including a follow up email to give them an opportunity to respond - I've not heard a thing from them. Please don't go here. They really don't care about their customers.

Beautiful pub but absolutely dreadful service. We made a booking for a large group for a birthday celebration. Family had traveled far to meet up but we were faced with awful service. We gave a preorder for food of which we were told the meals that were missed were not on the order, they clearly were. We asked questions on the email, these were never responded to. Starters were missed and then the mains were sent in dribs and drabs. Four had been sent out of which one had to be returned due to bring cold. It took that long to receive others that gravy had to be sent back because it was cold. Then sides came out but they didn’t have the meal to eat it with. Then three mains just never came, again being told they weren’t on the email, again clearly were. We cancelled them at this point. The manager came to see us and said he actually could not find an email from us ?? Yet starters and some mains had come out !! He asked if we knew if it had been received !! Clearly it had. My nephew had spoken to someone the week prior, of which his response was I don’t work those days !! This was not what we wanted to hear or resolving the issue. We had to say if the remainder meals did not arrive in the next 10 minutes we were leaving ( less the three that still did not arrive and cancelled). He clearly has no customer service skills. The pub clearly cannot cope with large bookings and therefore should not take them. The manager did offer a free drink which some of us did have and 25% off the bill which was appreciated but the experience totally ruined the day and no free drink or money off can repair that. The poor waitress was the only one showing empathy to the situation. We can safely say we will not be returning ******************************************* Wig & mitre clearly not bothered to receive a one star review as no reply received after 4 days. !!!!

Lovely location, decor is appealing and comfortable. Very well heated on a very cold night visit that provided a warm welcome only topped by that of the staff. Staff friendly, attentive and professional. Ordered home made burger which was so very tasty and steak which was cooked to perfection. Triple cooked chips were perfect and homemade pepper sauce just lovely. Excellent fayre with a friendly and warm welcome.

Nice pub very friendly helpful staff. Menu and food not up to level i expected a bit disappointed. Why in this day and age is vegetarian food a token gesture when all the supermarket are making such a big thing of it.

Great pub right between Lincoln's historic cathedral and castle. Small but nice selection of drinks, reasonably priced, and the staff are exceptionally friendly.

We come in almost every week and we have never had bad experience, but today was exceptional! Sophie helped us with every question we had and also went above and beyond to help us with some technical issues that helped us out fantastically! It's not her usual job but her help has made such a difference to me and my wife! Nothing is too much for her! The team is also very good and the food is always perfect. Emma is also always lovely to see when she's working too!
