Whitechapel Gallery Cafe bar in Tower Hamlets

I've visited a few times over the years. Usually interesting, mature content. This time, a lot of content was created by children and other content was more streetscapes. Lots of older, mature visitors, so it's not a trashy modern gallery, but this visit was a little underwhelming. Friendly staff, decent toilets.

Amazing space. Really poor art at the exhibition I saw.

In all honesty, they need more free exhibitions and it needs to be free to every member of the public, expect for hideous Zionists, fugly Conservatives, insufferable Labour Party members, both parties’ voters as well as annoying rich people, they’ll have to pay billions to be let in.

Fantastic space, Fantastic staff. Visited the Gallery for an event and found it to be a modern venue for various artists and creatives. The staff were excellent.

Disappointment. Their own gallery. General visitors should not go.

A beautiful space, very calming architecture and beautifully curated art works.

Hopped off Aldate East tube and straight into Whitechapel gallery, no queues. We opted to view the exhibition by local school children. Free access and beautifully displayed. My SEN son was captivated, very accessible and we spent a solid hour looking at the exhibition and the acconpanying resources which sparked 2 purchases from the well stocked bookstore downstairs ( even if you don't have time for an exhibition visit the bookshop is worth a look). Our only disappointment was the staff. I used to work at the Ikon Gallery Birmingham ( always worth a visit) and we always offered a welcome on entrance and more info on displayed work if visitors wanted more engagement. We were not spoken to our whole visit except when I had to interrupt a staff conversation in the bookshop to make a purchase. Not very friendly , somewhat aloof.....it didn't spoil our visit but neither did staff enhance it.

Came here with my friend who recommended it, there wasn't much on at the time to be honest and the gallery layout is very confusing but I would still recommend as it's mainly free. The book shop was my favourite part.

Great place to hang out for a while. Great restaurant, interesting exhibitions (some free, some ticket only)

not good for modern contemporary crowd but good is do you like boring art

Fantastic gallery with regularly-changing exhibitions and v cool Thursday night access when you can get in free.

Honestly, I don't like to say bad words...but is so dirty everywhere. I've moved here because of the job for a period and outside on the street has been some rubbish for more of 3 weeks. And everywhere where I was walking were dirty and full of rubbish. Especially where is the market outside till Whitechapel Station, people just leave behind their on rubbish like nothing happened. I gave 2 stars cuz I've meet some good persons and they were polite.

2 exhibitions 1 was a 20 minute film The other was very very basic Wouldn't recommend

Sitio céntrico y buenas conexión con bus y metro, Limpieza buena, amabilidad del personal exquisita, solo la entrada de frío por las ventanas para ponerles un pero aún así pedimos más mantas y sin problema y radiadores. Volvería a repetir.

Poor gallery and pathetic management

Lovely unique gallery and has a wonderfully packed shop of great books. The restaurant is nice but a bit of a shame there is no kids menu.

Museum mit interessanten Ausstellungen zu zeitgenössischer Kunst. Wir haben die Nicole Eisenmann besucht, sehr gut kuratiert. Außerdem liegt es in einem interessanten Viertel, wenn man sich in den umliegenden Straßen bewegt.

Mostly doodles & cloth. "Paintings on the walls?" - £.12 a ticket. Concessions possible. Thurs pm free.

Fantastic little gallery, free to enter with some unique pieces on show. Great little gift shop with plenty of books and staff are really helpful. While it’s not huge, it’s a welcome break from the busy streets and a nice space to reflect and enjoy the art.

A bit hard to find where to buy tickets for the shows but a gallery that has free and private exhibitions. Tickets for the Eisenmann show was around 12 pound for students. They have a nice shop/bookstore

Keep going back to this gallery. Interesting contemporary art exhibitions and an East End institution which deserves to be supported.

It brings me no pleasure in saying this about a free art gallery, but myself and my partner found the art here insufferable. It's modern art to the extreme end - beyond woke, not that interesting and not displaying much talent. The gallery is also very small. Yes, art is subjective but methinks unless you are a fulltime social justice warrior and edgy uber hipster - you won't have fun. It's not catering to a broad audience, which is a shame.

Always a great visit; this time we went to see Nicole Eisenman's exhibition, the first major UK retrospective, spread in three floors and beautifully curated. Bonus visit the cafe and wine bar on the ground floor

Whitechapel Gallery was a pleasant interlude on a Saturday afternoon. The pieces were thought-provoking and engaging. The book shop was awesome too. Lots of interesting topics. Would definitely visit again. Plus, it's free!

Vond het tegenvallen. Picasso en Kahlo niet gevonden.

It's free and it was out of the rain. I don't understand much about contemporary art and the displays left me nonthewiser. I'd have liked stuff explaining. The legends on the walls did little to explain.

The Gallery was free of cost to visit. I get to see two different artists work there. You have 30min in hand and want to explore some artistic experience I would recommend this place. It was easy to find place in the heart of Whitechapel. Waiting for the next exhibition to happen.

Cute gallery. Very small though. Bathrooms and baby change in the basement and little cafe and shop on the ground floor. Free to visit, no tickets needed

I know it's very ignorant to say but I just found the art disappointing. There wasn't even much there to be honest. I'm sure if you really like modern art or are going to see a specific display it's fine to visit, but I wouldn't make an effort to go again 🧐

I saw a manager of the cafe area rudely deny a staff member tap water. If that was me I would never work there again

Says it's open on here and yet is completely closed, apart from the bookshop and restaurant, for a Media Day and yet there are no media in there at the moment and they won't let me in. Wasted journey.

i went here for the first time in about april of this year and it did not disappoint. first of all, the art is unique. second of all, i love how interactive it is. for one of the exhibitions, you can write something on a sticky note and put it on a wall of other sticky notes

The gallery itself has an interesting history; the exhibitions are almost always thought provoking making it a worthwhile visit, with a nice café as a bonus.

Great place - as was pointed out on the tour, the welcome desk is right at the street- a reminder that this was a local gallery and remains so.

Came here for an event hosted by the brilliant culture and arts collective, Oitij-jo. They organise and host fantastic events showcasing and celebrating Bengali cultural heritage. The event featured a range of live spoken word and musical performances. There were also dance performances, film screenings and great food to try. The gallery itself was an optimal venue for such an event, and all the staff were very warm and friendly.

Very interesting and largish gallery, a very worthy visit.

Always worth a look for some thought provoking modern art.

It was quite peaceful place, if you have time and want peace of mind please go and visit it. There are several screens playing documentary videos you can sit in the bench and enjoy. You can easily spend couple of hours there seeing all the art work and documentary.

I love that this gallery is where it is, but most of the times I left disappointed with the exhibitions. Seen one good one though years ago.

We hired the space to hold a meeting and discussion after the tour as well. Staff was great. Very friendly and responsive. Communication issues were cleared up easily enough. A must see for London gallery goers.

There were many forms of modern art that were very beautiful there. As well as interactive rooms and exhibitions for you to get involved with. Although most of the events are free, I do recommend checking the website if you do need tickets.

Really disappointed by my first visit to this gallery, there seemed to be nothing to see! The only interesting part was the bookshop. I might have been unlucky with the timing of my visit, maybe they are between exhibits. Still, I expected a lot more.

interesting art installation that provides free admission

Great small gallery that usually has something of interest. On one visit they had a neat show of fluxist stuff. Great location too, just around the corner from Brick Lane, and a short walk to Spitalfield.

Small and intimate, but a really interesting collection of rotating installations.

Real hidden gem if you are a bit interested in art.

Pretty cool and free of charge, though I expected way more considering the fame around this Gallery. I liked the installations that invited physical interaction with the work. I could even work out a little using giant plushy warms they have there. There were also couches and music, the installation which speculated on public spaces and how to make them inviting. The bookshop has some decent titles in offer, I did not expect it to be so diverse. Overall a fun gallery, felt more creative and social than some contemporary art galleries which focus on moralising messages.

Lovely exhibition with a great variety of art including video, photography, audio and conceptual arts. Spent three hours and loved every minute.

Regular visitor here. The 'Life is more important than art' show was a delight with a carefully selected mix to engage everybody. Painting was strong and some excellent film. The bookshop is always engaging too

Very nice art gallery. I was kindly adviced with information I looking for.

Went to see some art stuff made by Somalis. Was nectar to see some cassette tapes on display and to be able to listen to them.

Unfortunately there was nothing to see really. Only 2 rooms were open, the first one was very interesting as it was an open space for all kinds of messages. In the second one a film was on about streetnames that contained the word 'jew' in them. If there was more to see I'd give it a higher rating, but it was a bit dissapointing
