Went here as has been a favourite stop off on my way home when I've been oop North. Not ben for a few months but was sorely disappointed. Had the homemade cheeseburger with brioche bun and home made chips. What I got was frozen chips, white cob from the Coop down the road, a very cheap frozen burger and no sauce. It didn't even have the pickle the menu promised. My pint of BG Sips was not in great condition either. All in all, a terrible experience.

Alarm bells were ringing that there were still covers available to book a week before but based upon previous review ratings decided to take a gamble. What a mistake! We went upstairs to the restaurant and were shown to our table by the increasingly nervous teenage girls serving. No drinks order taken, other customers grumbling about the time taken for their desserts, the couple adjacent only paid for their drinks and advised us not to order the beef. Twenty minutes later, ordered our mains (still no drinks), waitress had to check availability - came back to say they had run out of food at 5:20pm! And we had actually booked so our arrival shouldn't have been a surprise! After complaining to the manager we were asked if we wanted complementary drinks ...NO, we're leaving to find another place to eat! AVOID!

We booked a Sunday lunch here for a Leap Year 80th birthday celebration and there were 21 of us. For most of the 4 hours we were there, we had the upstairs room to ourselves. This was particularly helpful as we had come from various parts of the country and do not see each other very often, so kept moving around. We also had children in our party so they had a bit more freedom to move as well. We were able to decorate the room with banners, balloons and table confetti, and display cards, which really added to the ambiance of the occasion. We all ordered a Sunday lunch which was extremely good value. They did well to serve the food to everyone within a short space of time, given the size of the party, and it was tasty and there was plenty of it. My only criticism would be that it could have been a bit hotter, or even just served on hotter plates. The staff were all very pleasant, particularly the young lady who was looking after us. Because the grandchildren had made 3 cakes, we did not order starters or puddings but she happily made teas and coffees. I did not really spend much time anywhere else in the pub but I gather the bar staff were friendly and efficient, and the whole place was clean and welcoming. At no time did we feel under pressure to be quiet or leave quickly, given that we had not ordered much food, and astonishingly there was not even a service charge on the bill. (Obviously we tipped!) We would most definitely return here when visiting the area, and would like to try more of the menu. Customer service was excellent, thank you!

We were expecting a fabulous meal like the one we had here about 18 months ago. We ordered fish, chips and peas. Expecting as on our last visit chunky home cooked chips, pea puree and delicious battered cod. What we received was very disappointing - tasteless oven chips (like the ones you buy in supermarkets but poor quality ones) frozen garden peas and not very nice fish! The dessert menu was also disappointing - three or four ice cream dishes, sticky toffee pudding or cheesecake. My husband and friend had the sticky pudding which they said was good but very small portions. My friend asked what flavour the cheesecake was - the waitress then had to go back to the kitchen to ask! The service was good although there were only two other tables occupied. There was a turn on downstairs and the loud music was vibrating through our feet! I don't know what has been happening over the last eighteen months but we certainly won't be going back. Very poor value for money.

We arrived for lunch today at around 1 o'clock. After reading the reviews on trip adviser were somewhat a little nervous about going but having lived in Selston for some time now. Well.. Where do we start, we arrived at the pub and were amazed about how clean it was and how moden and profession everything looked compared to all of the other pubs in the area. We were greated by Lewis who let out beaming smile as soon as we walked in which made is chuckle a little but broke the ice and made us feel welcome almost immediately, he also came to speak to us and really made us feel valued, not like he was reading off some sort of trip. My wife and i both had the "White Lion Burger".. It arrived beautiful presented and was one of the best burgers we have EVER had, so compliments to the chefs Jamie and Torin. Everything was taken care of, any thing we needed Lewis was willing to deliever. Overall it was a fantasic experience and both the chefs and host was outstanding would recommend it highly.John B

When we arrived music was playing but this ended and so did any chance of an atmosphere - staff didn't notice and start the music again.Starter of fishcake was poor value for money, tiny fishcake and some lettuce leaves for a fiver. It was tasty but I've had double the portion and of the same quality for the same price elsewhere.Main course of roast dinner is good value, you do get lots. I had beef and although it was tasty I couldn't eat much of it as it had gristle / fat in it and I only got the one slice (guess that was unlucky), I think some of the veg was also frozen.Side portions are huge you don't need one to yourself.I probably would give it another try but wouldn't be in no great hurry

After our last terrible visit, we thought enough time had past to give the white lion another chance. It should have been a clue when trying to book a table at many other restaurants and they were fully booked up, and the Lion had plenty of tables. We ordered starters of welsh rarebit, mules mariniere, and spiced parsnip soup; all of which were terrible. The rarebit was dry as though it had been reheated and left, the moules , smelled very strong of fish, the sauce had been left for too long on a hot plate as the surface had developed a skin , I tasted the first muscle and the grit in it was very bad, then as I tasted the second the taste was off, I love muscles, but this dish was off, I did not have one mouth full of this course. The soup was more of a puree, and resembled and tasted more like baby food. Main course, my husband ordered a medium rare stake which arrived very rare and very tough; on the menu it said it came with salad, hmmm I don't call three lettuce leaves a salad. My daughter had a burger, it was ok. I had sea bass with linguine, or should I say half a sea bass with bland linguine. Did not stay for dessert. The service was very good. I really did hope it had improved; but sadly no. This has gone from a place we would go to weekly and enjoy everything, to a place we would not recommend nor make a return visit. There are other good restaurants in the area now to choose from, but I would advise you give this one a miss.

Although we weren't charged for that meal, it took a good few months to go back. Food was non-descript, bland, cold veg etc . Expensive for what it is. We went over early to decorate with banners and balloons. On arrival it all looked lovely. The food was awesome - we had asked for a set menu and had 3-4 choices for each course, my lamb was incredible and the steaks went down well with the adults. A late Sunday lunch today and having been here before for the same, seemed a good choice for the family to get together.Plenty of parking though when busy may not have enough. Outside area to sit for drinks and a smoking shelter for those who must !Even though most of the party were somewhat late, it wasn't busy and they still accommodated us.Pate starter for me which was presented with plenty of leaves but no other salad, relish and bread. This was nice and enjoyable, didn't appear home made which was a shame but was tasty.I had roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, others had pork as there was no chicken left - understandable being late and we ordered a selection of additional bowls of vegetables to share.Food was well presented, not so hot this time, vegetables again nick presented but again not very hot.Deserts were very nice, again presented nicely, tasted great and for 6 people with a bottle of wine for those not driving and additional drinks £80 excellent value for money. This is an excellently presented property, clean, welcoming and friendly. We have been to the White Lion a few times since it opened and recommended it to other people as a good place to eat.. With all this said we decided to go again last weekend, once for tea on Friday and then again on Sunday for lunch. The Friday night tea was fab and arrived in good time etc - no complaints there but the overall state of the venue wasn't very good - The toilets had empty toilet rolls on the floor and in the holders, the bin was overflowing and was dirty and unkempt, the carpet in the bar area where we ate had food all over it and again looked messy along with full ashtrays outside it was a bit off putting, I decided that the cleaner had been sick and it was a one off. When we visited again on Sunday for lunch the food again was great but the place didn't look much different, the toilets had been re-stocked but not cleaned and again the carpets were messy - As the bar was busier it also had empty glasses everywhere and dirty tables and again was off putting. I don't think I will be recommending anyone for a while as I think it has gone off the boil and needs some care and attention.

No gravy boat was offered either. The steak night on a Tuesday used to be lovely but that's not very nice of late! Instead of having young teenagers look after the restaurant maybe the managers need to be more aware of why the food is getting worse and service could be improved.

Determined to try the White Lion for a while, we finally took the plunge shortly before Christmas. All-in-all, the experience was okay but there were a couple of things that could be easily addressed to make this establishment so much better. The service was quite good; however, my glass had lipstick on from a previous customer and there was a significant error on the bill at the end of the night - of course, in their favour! We thought the food was really quite good: we opted for the festive menu and liked each of the three courses that were presented to us.The restaurant itself had a nice feel about it - especially when the music was playing in the background. At one point this stopped for a long time and you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife. You could hear everyone's conversations at other tables and this made things very comfortable. In the end this had to be pointed out to the server; surely she should have been more on the ball and aware of this in the first place?Generally speaking, we felt as though this restaurant was giving up a little. We just hope that the proprietors of the establishment choose to care and do something about these minor issues. If they do, we should have a great restaurant in Selston that we can rely on more regularly in the future.

Myself and 7 others went to the white lion in selston for the 3 course Christmas menu. I ordered duck spring rolls for my starter. As I gazed upon what can only be described as two Brazil nuts on my plate, I then realised to my amazement... That's the spring rolls! They were so tiny that it was impossible to get any duck in them. I then tried my partners "lobster" soup which tasted like cod in butter sauce but without the cod. After the disappointing appetiser I was well looking forward to my hearty beef medallion main course. Until I saw once again that my plate was half empty. Two beef medallions which didn't equate to 5oz, one roast potato, one spoon of mash, an attempt at some stuffing (hardly worth it). one slice of carrot and one slice of parsnip. Absolutely pathetic. Every man around the table complained on how hungry we still were after 3 courses and proceeded to have to carry on eating once we arrived home. Unacceptable.

Following recommendations from previous customers we decided to book our Christmas night out here for 13th December. Prior to arriving we had two phone calls with changes to our order as choices were not going to be available. When we arrived our party was asked to eat in a small, cold room off the main restaurant. This room contained old cardboard boxes and appeared to be used as a storeroom for surplus furniture! There were no Christmas decorations and when we asked if there was any music we were informed that the speaker was broken. All in all it was lacking in Christmas spirit. One poor waitress was left to cope with our party all by herself (she was lovely though). This led to food arriving in dribs and drabs and meals getting cold. The food was ok. At least the wine was cheap - this helped to numb the pain. It could have been so much better and we won't be returning.

Living locally we've been to the White Lion before, not long after it opened last new year. We were disappointed on that occasion and put it down to teething problems, and so we thought we'd give it another go. What a mistake. I believe in constructive criticism, so hopefully the owners will read this and do something about it.When you arrive at the 'restaurant' you have to access through the pub front door. The tables are upstairs and we had to fight our way through the busy bar to get to the stairs. Finally seated, we looked at the limited menu and decided that steak was the best option. Our order was taken by a young girl, who clearly has never had any training. She was pleasant and tried, but simply did not know what she was doing.Service was slow, no attention to detail and we we're never offered a desert. There was one other family there who came in afterwards, who I really felt bad for. As we finished our meal and paid the bill, a live band started in the pub downstairs.. The music was so loud that it drowned out the music in the restaurant and literally made the table shake. It's sad, because this place has the potential to be really nice, but I'm afraid we won't be going back.

Not many people in there but a nice atmosphere. Pleasant staff, ordered 2 glasses of wine at the bar and was told if we ordered 2 large glasses we would get the rest of the bottle for free so of course we had to accept! 3 of us ordered scampi and chips and one salmon and we all really enjoyed our meals especially the home cooked chips. 3 of us had the homemade cheesecake and one the choc orange bread n butter pud and again all enjoyed. Will definitely go back.

This lunchtime was our first visit, we were impressed with the decor and surroundings. Wasn't sure where to sit, wether to go upstairs to the restaurant or stay downstairs near the bar, only one lady behind the bar when we entered, but she disappeared. We decided to go upstairs to the restaurant to be told when we got up there that there was a private party in there . So back downstairs. The lady was back behind the bar, so we asked if we could look at a menu. She told us to find a seat and she would come and take our order. She did... much later. We ordered 2 cappuccinos and I asked for scampi and my husband asked what pie it was. She didn't know and had to go and ask. We had finished our cappuccinos sometime earlier before our food arrived. It was presented very well, chips were very tasty. My scampi was very rubbery and chewy. My husband said his steak and ale pie was lovely. Not once did anyone ask if everything was alright. We had finished our meals and sat and sat, waiting for the table to be cleared or ask us if we would like a dessert, so we decided to leave and pay at the bar. Once again, nothing was said to us about our meal, no apologies for any delays, just nothing.

After our first visit for a Sunday lunch we came away with the impression that this place had potential and would be worth a second visit. The pub has recently been refurbished to a good standard and the atmosphere was pleasant with subtle background music. The food was well cooked and presented, beef was nicely pink and tasty. Pity about the real ale selection though. On our second visit today we were so disappointed. On entering the pub we were greeted by loud music blaring out. Not my idea of a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy lunch in. The selection of real ale was still poor given the number of excellent microbreweries there are in this area. We had booked and were seated at our table and then ignored. We got so fed up of waiting to be given a menu that we collected some from the rack by the bar, chose what we wanted and then ordered our food from the bar. Still no sign of the waitress service that we had on our previous visit. We ordered roast beef with a side order of vegetables. When the food arrived the beef was over cooked and the side order was yet more cabbage (there was a generous portion of cabbage and leaks already on the plate). Cabbage was not one of the options for side orders and we had not been asked which of the options we would like. We complained about this and were bought a dish of cauliflower cheese. This was barely warm and very overcooked. On finishing our meal we waited and waited for the table to be cleared and to be offered the desert menu. After sitting chatting and finishing our drinks the table had still not been cleared so we decided to give up on desert and leave leaving the table still covered with our dirty dishes. Will think twice before visiting again.

Out with a couple of friends and it's "Steak night" at the White Lion shall we try there? My friend booked a table (although on this particular Tuesday it wasn't necessary). The last time I went there it had a smoky atmosphere and a pool table - yes it was a good while ago. It has been refurbished into a light, airy and very pleasant restaurant/pub. There was an upstairs restaurant but we didn't venture thereI love a good steak (there were different ones available - even swordfish) and this was cooked as requested with a roasted tomato and a couple of leaves £8. Proper real chunky chips (no oven chips here) and huge onion rings and a pepper sauce as sides. It came to about £13 so was I pleased? Oh yes!It wasn't busy so the staff were attentive but not overbearing and overall we had a pleasant evening. They serve a Sunday roast dinner (not a carvery but...) so hope to try that soon as if it is of the quality of "steak night" I will not be disappointed. We meet about once a month so will we go there again? Yes and see what else is available from their menu which from other reviews appears to be extensive.

we got taken here by a couple of friends who live locally a week ago on a sunday afternoon. first impressions of the pub were very good, lovely decor and furnishings. got our drinks at the bar and then went upstairs to eat, which was also really nicely decorated. after waiting for approx. 10-15 mins the waitress finely bought us the menus. we didnt want starters just had mains, when it came it was really lovely, well presented and very tasty. we had all finished and were waiting for table to be cleared which seemed to take ages (one waitress was busy polishing cutlery behind bar, surely a job to do when nothing else to do!!) table was eventually cleared and dessert menus given. we all chose and another long wait for our order to be taken in the end we had to ask if we could order desserts.we all ordered and then the other waitress came to tell one of our group that her choice had all gone so could she choose again. another long wait and two desserts came, the other two were delayed because of a mix up in kitchen she told us. (we think they were given to another table) so two of us had nearly finished by the time the other two arrived. i will just say they were all really delicious!! there were only two waitresses on but the restaurant wasnt busy so whether it was inexperience on their part i dont know.it was such a shame because the food and surroundings were first class and good value for money!!! i'm sorry to say we didnt leave a tip because of the poor service.

What a pleasant surprise when we visited this recently refurbished privately owned pub for a lunchtime meal. The food was excellent, freshly cooked, and very reasonably priced for the quality on offer..All the food is home cooked, sourced locally, and the service from the young staff was very good.and this is definitely not a fast food outlet. The new decor both upstairs and downstairs is very modern and the toilets are very clean and equally as impressive.Downstairs there is a lounge, Dining Room and bar, and upstairs two restaurants., There is live music most Fridays and it gets very busy, as does Sunday lunch, and so it may be worth booking. There is also an outside well maintained garden area with seats and tables for dining out if the weather is kind., Enjoy the experience, we certainly did, and it will not be too long before we visit again.

All three meals were well presented and very tasty. The service was very good and the staff were cheerful and friendly. We ate in the bar area instead of the upstairs restaurant as the pub was not busy. The three meals, with drinks, came to £44.10, and we didn't have a starter or dessert as the mains were ample for all of us. Had a lovely sunday lunch here recently to celebrate a family member birthday. I was very impressed by the decor and the cleanliness of the pub, its very classy indeed. We had our seating area upstairs, which was a little hot as its was 25`c summer day and No fans or air con. However, it was a lovely side room for our family. The food was presented really well, and tasted gorgeous! But it was a little pricey on the bar, which is a little frustrating when its about £5 a glass of wine.... ouch!!! The desserts were equally as nice, and they obviously take great pride in presentation. I will visit again for sure!

I booked the restaurant for a meal for two on Monday 2st June. A male confirmed they would accept Tastecard (TC) for the booking and said they'd write a note alongside the booking that TC would be used. In effect on the evening they refused to take TC saying that they didn't accept TC on Mondays and implied that I'd made up the fact that I'd been told that TC would be accepted! The food and service of the food were OK but the 'manager' responsible for taking our payment was nothing short of rude and unprofessional. I took the incident up with Tastecard itself who since have ensured the restuarant made changes to its page on their site making it clear that TC couldn't be used on a Monday. I have left some time between the unpleasent occasion and now in the hope that the restaurant would make some attempt to properly address what happened and apologise. Unfortunately as this hasn't happened then I feel it important to share my awful experience. In all the years I have used a Tastecard I have never encountered such rudeness, and in fact this is the worst TripAdvisor review I have ever written. I was and still am very disappointed.

I was part of a party 13 booked to eat upstairs and having arrived early, I was impressed with the standard of renovation carried out here. A good selection of ales helped, as did the buzzing atmosphere in the bar area downstairs. After we went upstairs for the meal the atmosphere was excellent and we were presented with a good choice of food: there were a number of people with dietary requirements but all were able to find a choice and where necessary, the chef was able to confirm removal of certain ingredients. The food was served in a timely manner and was freshly made and tasty. Such a change from the boil in the bag or microwave pub food readily available elsewhere in the county. In all great value for money in a location I will certainly visit again soon.

Recently, following my fathers funeral we held a Wake at the The White Lion Selston. From our initial enquiries, through the Wake and even on our return to pay a few days later, we were dealt with in a sympathetic and thoughtful manner Tyrol. He insisted that all would go smoothly,he would ensure it did and that he would replenish refreshments when required....and he did just that.Early on the day the chef took charge of photo frames of our family memories which the staff placed with care around the room ready for our return from the funeral. The food we had ordered was lovely, we had chosen mainly sandwiches and buffet items, all were prepared with care and the chef cooked French fries and handmade crisps to give us something hot, they went down very well particularly with the teenagers.Thank you White Lion you provided our family and friends with a cosy and comforting haven on a difficult day.Tyrol thank you for your kindness and going that extra mile for us.

3/5 for this place.. Such a small menu should really mean that the staff know it inside out. On this occasion the waitress even had to go to the bar to find out which draughts were on offer.. The food in the main seems reasonable, however it's overpriced and expect to pay at least 1/3 more than you want to.. The most irritating thing about our visit was the waitress failed to announce the specials, which I would have ordered.. It's a local pub trying to be a gastro destination, and it's not working I'm afraid.

This isn’t too far from home and we have watched with interest at the transformation over the last few months. Anyway, we had a chance to try for lunch recently and the interior is very nicely done.We ate in the dining nook which seats a dozen or so. There is also some comfy seating and flatscreen tv . The downstairs isn’t huge but looks like there’ll be outside seating for the summer. The main dining area is upstairs (think for about 50). The menu has been kept small but feels like restaurant prices. £9 for a small bowl of soup and a tiny sandwich. The food was nice but at these prices it’ll be a special occasion rather than an impromptu lunch. I would imagine their main competition will be The Countryman which is about 5 mins away. Our initial impression was that this was more of a restaurant rather than a place to go for a drink but we’ve noticed they’ve now got posters out advertising drinks and the tv.It’s always good to see new places opening up locally, not sure they have really hit their market yet.

Great refit and decor. Most of all STUNNINGLY FLAVOURSOME FOOD. Spoilt for choice - yes! Everything made in kitchen, including the sourdough bread. Yummy! REAL FOOD. Keep it up guys. Head chef - Daniel is inspired in his flavour choices, good ingredients and skilled execution of dishes. We'll be back. Hannah the waitress was attentive and interested - lovely person. Cyril behind the bar was welcoming, engaged and informative. What a great team. NEGATIVE: was the owners are thinking of putting in Sky Sports!!! NO - you wouldn't want to do that ... if you do it'll KILL the slot in the marketplace you're beginning to establish and ruin customers expectations. Then unfortunately we'll not then visit! Sports screens in pubs around are '2-a-penny' and you will become just like the others ... samey and lost! Feel sorry for all guys that work there if this happens because it will denegrate their roles. Then before too long it'll be chips and deep fried everything - Ugh!! We ask the owners to have patience and see the project through at least past summer without making major changes that will change customer base. It's early days ... formula is good and people are spreading the word about the great food ... see it through! Thanks to the committed staff - you're tops!

However, the food that evening was excellent but the service was not. This time, both food and service were above our expectations and offering the bar menu as well as the A la carte was an inspired idea. On our first visit we were only offered the A la carte menu which had very little that my wife would eat. We were told after we had ordered that a bar menu was available but as mentioned earlier in this review, due to staff shortages, I didn't ask to change. As both menu's were available this time, a wider choice was on offer. I had the Venison Sausage and my wife choose the Ham. Both meals were superb and a special mention to Ewan and his team, the restaurant manager who made our evening with such attentive service.
