The Countryman Pub and Dining in Ashfield

Family group of 10 ate here Saturday evening. Pre orders provided on request a week before. Staff accommodated a couple of last minute changes without any problem at all. Initial drinks service not the quickest . Very friendly waitress confirmed all orders and was very helpful. Food was delicious and did take well over half an hour to arrive (table at 6pm , food arrived 6.50) Restaurant was busy but not overcrowded. Food was delicious . The sausages get a special mention - so tasty! Overall a really good experience

Really enjoyed but no consistency with waiters, therefore message not always passed on. Although service was very good from all thankyou. Ambiance was very good, nice atmosphere and very friendly.

Went with Family Friday Afternoon (1st Nov) for my girlfriend’s grandmother’s birthday. Once we got there we were escorted to our table that we had booked in advance, and had our drink orders taken whilst we had a peruse at the menu. All had different food, there was me, my girlfriend, her mum, her grandmother, and my grandmother, a couple of us had a starter (I had garlic mushrooms), then all had mains, (I had bangers and mash) which was 2 Lincolnshire sausages, creamy mash, onion’s and red hot thick gravy which was also Accompanied with a side mixture of hot vegetables. Then a dessert of lemon cheesecake and pouring cream. All had desserts. I had 4 pints of Diet Coke (As I don’t drink alcohol), mother-in-law a bottle of wine, the girlfriend and my grandmother had 3 pints of lager each, and my girlfriend’s grandmother had 2 half’s of lager. Coming to a total of about £130. And all I can say is - complete and utter value for money. Food red hot, and tasty, and the service by one of the waitresses (didn’t get her name) absolutely amazing from start to finish. Can’t fault the place. Highly recommended and shall definitely be back - without a doubt…!

Honest review from a chef with a rare Friday night off work.... Never been before but heard good things. Read reviews from other people complaining about service or wait times, but think they're unfair. Let's be honest, people expect a LOT from staff these days, who are just trying their best. The lad who served us today was very good, and I'd happily give him a job where I work. Granted these young people won't always be prefect but the fact they are clearly trying is a credit to the pub. The food is very reasonably priced, and my steaks were cooked perfectly. My wife really enjoyed her chicken and I think its great that you can get more salad or veg. We didn't know where to go as we usually end up where I work, but fancied a change and we will definitely be back. Not the fanciest food, but definitely nice food and well worth the money. Cheers to the chefs who deserve a shout out and are often forgotten. We had a good night 👊

Food looked lovely but some of the chips was hard, very noisy, not sure we will go again.

Ordered 2 traditional breakfasts, took 45 minutes to arrive and it was pretty oily. Cappuccino is refilled but isn’t actually cappuccino it’s just milky coffee . Seemed to be short staffed but been before and was same then. Not the cheapest breakfast either for the quality

Went here 30th September 2024 for my daughters birthday. 50 minute wait for food, two orders of steak and sausage amongst other orders. These portions were small, overcooked steak which was tough and dry (ordered medium rare). 7 chips came with the meal, not acceptable given the price. Have had previous meals here which were good hence why I chose the venue for the birthday. Will not be returning anytime soon unfortunately.

Food was good, staff were friendly , but we waited 90mins from ordering. Kitchen staff did a great job despite the obvious stress. We waited the manager drinking and not supporting his staff. Won’t be going back

Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere.

Enjoyable night and food until 10.30 when the four of us all with our drinks left were ‘told’ not asked to move to the bar so they could set the table for the following day. All the other tables were empty and had been reset, we asked to finish our drinks as to set the table when we had done would take 5 minutes but we were refused and told to move to another room. We paid and left, £160 was the bill and we come regularly and won’t be going again. Shocking…. Had our money couldn’t wait to get rid of us. A great example of terrible customer service

Our 1st visit (8 of us), 10 9 2024, to this recommended eatery. We are all very pleased we went - a really good experience right from the start. Greeted very pleasantly and professionally, shown to a table just right for our needs, to chat without needing to raise voices, and munch excellently cooked, well presented food from a menu providing a range of options to satisfy us all. More veg? Of course, Sir. Took 3 seconds to arrive. Prices - very good value. You can pay more for a lot less quantity and lower quality so we would highly recommend The Countryman. We booked our Christmas Lunch there before leaving today. Thank you to everyone responsible for making our get-together a real success.

It's all wheelchair accessible, very nice & chilled, food really good but a little on the expensive side

From the moment we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted with a smile. A lovely gentleman took us to our table, and we were asiged with a lovely waitress named Becks. She was so helpful and nothing was too much for her. And when the food was brought out well, wow, it was outstanding. Well presented and it was very tasty. Congratulations to the chef. I will definitely be coming back. High recommended this place. Thank you for making our visit an enjoyable one. The photos doesn't do the food any justice. You need to go yourself and find out. You won't be disappointed. Not shown in the photos with the roast dinner's. You get a dish of the best vegetables I've ever tasted.

Waited 40mins for breakfast to be served, wasn’t overly busy in anyway yet all 4 tables within our area had to chase for their food. No checking on us as customers to see if we’d like anything, there was little opportunity to ask for anything extra as staff were disinterested, no customer service at all. My husband had a coffee, don’t get me wrong he likes a hot drink yet he actually burnt his lips on the coffee cup as he went to take a sip, Very disappointing.

I only found this gem late last year. After attending with my friends one evening. I had the chicken breast, mashed potato, and veg. It was absolutely beautiful. Since then, this has become one of my favourite restaurants to eat. Honestly, the food here is out of this world. If anybody asks me for a recommendation for a nice place to eat, I send them here. I can not praise this place enough. The food has flavour and texture and is mouth watering. Not like most restaurants where the taste is bland and lacks flavour. I can not recommend this place enough. It's my favourite place for food.

We booked this for my parents 60th wedding anniversary(which I told them we booked ) I dint think the staff where very friendly our server split my coffee twice. Didn’t think the food was value for money. 3 people had ribeye steaks. Couldn’t eat them. When we had our desserts they brought mum and dads came to the table abd said we got 15 mins left. That topped it off. Want go again

Used to be spot on but feels like its been dropping off a bit past few visits. Quality and portion size on the decrease. We went last week, and in the past, ordering a pie meant you got qn actual pie. This time I got a slice of pie that belongs on a childrens menu with a tiny ration of mash potato and skin on gravy. Ended up finishing my plate in about 8 mouthfuls. Luckily Id ordered garlic bread to pad it out but still went KFC on way home. Not great

I booked this for my mum and dads 60 th wedding anniversary. The staff wasn’t that friendly. The service wasn’t good. 3 of us had ribeye steak. Which was very chewy and fatty. As we where eating our desserts they brought the cake out and said they needed the table in 15 mins. Which just topped it off. We was hoping to have some cake and another drink 😢. So I asked for a knife cut the cake and took it home. For the price we paid I didn’t think it was value for money. Want go again

Very busy inside on the Saturday evening we went. We sat outside with our dogs as they’re not allowed in. Good options for vegan food, maybe 5 different dishes. The bartender did mess up and give us a cottage pie with real cheese, but the girl waiting on us was very apologetic. Offered a vegan one that wouldn’t take long, but I said I wasn’t bothered as I’m not strict (and it would’ve been binned), and she brought me a free drink which was good of her. My nans arrabiata wellington was interesting. She said it was okay but a weird combination and she wouldn’t order it again. Also the vegetable side plate was a bit gross. Ive worked at a similar place that served the same sort of side plates and they never got eaten. Better off roasting/frying some for the actual dish, rather than steaming some, or however they’re cooked, for a side plate of mushy veg. Not a bad experience overall and would return, since my nan has just moved to the area.

The steak was cooked nice altho smaller than expected and I would have liked the usual mushrooms, tomoto and onion rings rather than the served veg of carrots brussels and cabbage which doesnt really go with it but I had them because I was still hungry after eating the steak and chips on the plate. At the second visit I had steak pie and mash which was nice, gave the chips a swerve because double cooked are not to my liking.

Was sat in the bar so felt a little out of it but the food was amazing. Not huge portions so a dessert went down well. We ordered the peppered chicken (creamy pepper sauce)with new potatoes and the wexford chicken (creamy Stilton & mushroom sauce) followed by treacle sponge & custard and Belgium chocolate fudge cake warmed with cream. Clean plates. Ordered a latte at the same time but that didn't come straight away so had to ask. . Lovely friendly waitress though. Will defo return.

Food wasn't bad to be fair but that was it,staff seemed to be like headless chicken flapping around totally not as your wanting,seated in the far reaches of the not busy dining area to wait for service that was abysmal, toilet facilities dirty and like splashing around at the seaside.wont be returning.Bencar.X

I ordered a rib eye steak and didn't receive a rib eye steak and got a lump of meat tougher than my shoe sole. Then when I complained then in public view tried to humiliate my by showing me a rib eye steak in a plastic wrapper. I've eaten out practically every week of my adult life and this was NOT a rib eye steak. Shocking reaction to.my complaint and I will never return to this establishment

A little overpriced but a nice pub

We've decided to try without a booking on Friday 21st June. We were able to sit in the restaurant but we were accommodated in the bar which was fine. We both had burgers which were amazing. My husband had a new York burger, I had a cajun chicken burger. Both were absolutely amazing. The salad did make the hun fall apart a bit but that didn't matter, I cleared the plate. Only complaint is that we asked for the dessert menu when the table was cleared and we're still waiting for it - but if we were that bothered we'd have asked again. We can't wait to come back

We took our parents for a Sunday lunch and I have to say it was the worst Sunday we had ever had the pleasure of paying for. I had the beef which was like as they say “slow cooked in gravy” which I can assure you is not the case. My wife had lamb and which we paid additionally for the pleasure and I wish it was a pleasure but sadly it wasn’t. It was little pieces of Lamb which again they say was “slow cooked in Gravy” this seems to be a theme. On a positive side the roast potato’s are nice. You can take this review how you wish but trust me eating here will leave you disappointed.

What a huge disappointment!!! We came here to celebrate a late Father's Day with my parents. They are regular diners. We all chose the Sunday lunch, it was terrible. Probably the worst we've ever had. I paid £2 extra for the lamb which was literally tiny pieces like the dreg ends off the roasting tin. The mash was watery, vegetables too soggy. My husband left the table to speak to the Manager but we left without a satisfactory explanation or refund for the very sub standard meal. Needless to say we didn't stay for dessert! We won't be visiting again and won't recommend The Countryman. Very disappointed with the meal and the customer service.

I love going to the countryman, beautiful and clean, staff are hard working, polite nothing is too much trouble. The food is fabulous, I just want to say a big thank you.

Visited The Countryman for the second time in a month today & once again had a superb meal. The menu is extensive with a huge choice of gluten free foods & all beautifully home cooked. My lasagne was the best I’ve ever tasted & an unusual apple, strawberry & banana crumble was divine. The restaurant is tastefully decorated & spaced out so you don’t feel you’re encroaching on someone else’s table. Our waitress both times, a lady with a black lab, was attentive, engaging & an asset to the establishment. We will definitely be coming back to work our way through the rest of the menu. Couldn’t recommend more highly!

We were recommended The countryman by a neighbour when I asked for somewhere decent to go for breakfast. It didn't disappoint and were left rubbing our full bellies with a smile. Very clean modern fresh environment. The staff were very attentive, caring and efficient. The food was delicious and served quickly. The coffee was hot and smelt as good as it tasted. The breakfast was perfect. We were recommended here and I definitely recommend it to you. Thank you to everyone at the countryman who made my partners birthday breakfast outing a special one.

We've eaten here for years but feel the service is gradually slipping especially the speed of service and little details. Staff are always friendly. Food is always really nice. However, the last few visits the service has been super slow. For instance we were once waiting over 45 mins for 1 starter to be served, once had a 2 course meal take more than 2 hours and recently had a wait of 25 mins to pay the bill once asked and then we decided to go find someone to pay rather than wait at the table for any longer. Edit: Visited again for Sunday Lunch to be told they were out of the roast option. We were disappointed that there was no phone call to say this despite having our contact number. Appears to be poor planning if you're running out of Sunday Lunch options despite knowing how many are booked in.

Haven't been here for years but went good Friday with my husband , we couldn't have wished for a better service atmosphere and food . I had sea bass with veg and boiled potatoes there was plenty for me and was really nice , my hubby had steak and double dip chips with Dianne sauce no problems with the food at all . The staff were so friendly and helpful . Thanks for making our night comfortable and enjoyable hope to come again soon 👍😊

NEVER fails to disappoint. Although we’ve been coming here for the last 5years or so, today was the first time we’ve been for a breakfast that the Countryman only started providing a few months ago and needless to say the breakfasts are equally as delicious as the main menu. This is an EXCELLENT all round dining experience from the lovely clean pleasant venue, to the brilliant friendly staff and the food is on another level….can NOT fault it….delicious every time. The fact that its always full and booking is almost always required speaks for itself. Its by far the best place to eat for miles around and I wouldnt go anywhere else.

Called in today ordered 2 beef,eventually after 20 min it came was barely warm,meat was awfull,roast potatoes were hardly roasted,didnt want send back as dont like it microwaved.Did complain the waitress did keep appolagiesing but she shouldnt of had to should have been manager.4 of our friends were there they had same problem and got discount,we got nothing will not be back.

Food tasted great and presentation was standard/ average. Service was a little unprofessional and clumsy, but food came out at reasonable speed. Felt a little rushed regarding choosing food (not enough time allowed to read menu). Decor, furniture and lighting dated and tatty with nothing matching. Broken tap in ladies toilets with no out-of-order sign. Toilets otherwise spotless and modern; felt like a big contrast to the dated and grubby-looking bar and dining area. (Not saying the dining area was dirty; I think it gives that initial impression due to the decor and lighting). Ladies toilets need to be better signposted. Atmosphere could be better, but have experienced worse. Parking good and prices fair. Ok to stop for a meal if passing by, but not so much so for a special occasion or if you wanted to make a good impression on a first date.

Excellent service, the staff were all very friendly and helpful, Tia our waitress was lovely and the food was absolutely amazing, can't wait to come back!

Having read the reviews we were looking forward to a good meal, unfortunately this was not the case. Firstly the service was incredibly slow. We waited 50 minutes between our starter and main course and when the starters were finally cleared we were asked if we’d finished with them- it took great self control not to say ‘what, after 50 minutes?!) The starter, prawn cocktail was tiny and the prawns, of which I had a total of 10, were of poor quality. The mains were very average and here again not very large. Serving on a huge square plate didn’t help matters. We also thought it was pricey for very average pub food. We won’t be visiting again.

We’ve got family over from Ireland and they asked us if we knew anywhere nice to eat, we picked The Countryman,,8 of us,all had different meals,which included,Steak,Salmon,Sea Bass,Pork,Chilli,Burger and a child’s chicken nuggets, The service and welcome were top notch,the atmosphere was relaxed and warming, The meals came out all together and were absolutely beautiful,great portion size,tasty,and presented beautiful,, Because we didn’t have a starter we all had room for a dessert,which was also fantastic, I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough,never had a bad meal or experience in the many times we’ve visited 10/10

We decided to pop in for Sunday lunch.I think at £14.50 it's fairly pricey for the area.Very fast service very efficient waitress.We were disappointed with the beef very average and poor portion size. I would say no more than 3oz very thinly sliced and we were very under whelmed.

Been for breakfast 2 mornings this week ,great value beautiful food .one slight hiccup my daughters egg white wasn t cooked so no problem replacing it but got a sarky reply saying eggs should be runny !,yes they should but not clear and under cooked .Apart from that all in all a great place

What an absolutely amazing dining experience. From the moment we stepped in through the door. We were greeted and seated and were looked after from that moment on. The tables were arranged in such a way that there was plenty of room around us so we as diners weren’t hemmed in at all and the serving staff could easily move around each table. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection with a good menu to chose from. The servers were attentive and helpful making this dining experience one well worth going back to. This was my very first visit to The Countryman and I have to say will not be my last.

6 blokes having started and mains. Food came out hot, timely and all correct. Very tasty meals and the service was very good. Been a few times and never been disappointed. I would class this place as a bistro rather than a pub and has a higher standard than most other places in the area but at a reasonable cost. See you next time!

We visited New Year's day and the staff seemed tired after the busy Christmas season. The food was good but not the best we've had at the Countryman.

I went with my wife for lunch. Prawn cocktail, salmon fillet and lemon cheesecake were excellent. Lovely establishment and wonderful staff.

Had a lovely Christmas dinner with my family, the food was okay the same as most pub food the desert was honestly the best part very delicious. The staff was very warm and friendly, would come again.

I was staying with friends for the weekend, in Nottingham. As a surprise they had booked a meal at the Countryman. We have eaten there before, and enjoyed it. We had their special Christmas menu. What a delightful evening we had. The food was lovely, the staff were very attentive, and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Four of us had the Christmas Fayre menu and the food and service were excellent. Lovely atmosphere too.
