White Lion in West Lancashire

Pre booked for lunch to ensure a table and although we went on a Wednesday afternoon the place was really busy. Shown to a table indoors and drinks quickly ordered, shortly after food chosen and served within a short waiting period. Whole heartedly recommend the plate steak pie with proper fat chips and extra gravy: steak baguette was well prepared with loads of fries. Outstanding service by our waitress today who certainly made sure we had an enjoyable and memorable experience.

We visited the White Lion while staying in the area. The food is exceptional. I had the steak & ale pie & my wife had the chicken breast wrapped in bacon. Both meals were delicious & huge portion. The White Witch cask ale is a cracking pint & heaven to a real ale buff like me. We would highly recommend the White Lion & if we're in the area again will definitely call in again.

We recently went for breakfast at the white lion, it was a large group of all ages and I can’t praise the staff enough! It was all served together and was delicious!

The food here is absolutely amazing. Not only that but the staff and atmosphere are second to none. We live locally and we feel very lucky to have this place on our doorstep. There really isn’t anywhere locally or anywhere for that matter that puts the same amount of effort in as Ellie and Matt do at the White Lion. As soon as you walk through the door you a greeted with attentive staff that cant do enough for you. Theres always a really great atmosphere at any time of day!

We came in for Breakfast at the weekend. I can’t fault the food or the service. Emma was our server and nothing was too much trouble for her. Thank you for setting our day off with a smile

1st visit here yesterday...it wont be the last..lovely pub, nice chilling atmosphere, staff were helpful & courteous, always smiling..the food was delicious and plentiful, i had the petit fish chips & peas, my grandaughter had sausage & mash both were spot on 👌..although it was very busy we didnt wait long at all for our food and it was served hot, which is a bonus..

Had lunch here and the food was of a good standard had a cow and goat burger which was huge with fries. Found the fries a bit dry. The service was a bit slow probably because it was very busy. It can get noisy at times particularly if there are children around. Overall the white lion is a good place to eat. The bar has a good selection of beers and the price is reasonable

Been to the white lion on many occasions,food usually ok about average,I,m not a fussy eater and usually enjoy,but tonight food got sent back twice,undercooked beef,not good enough.the manager did come to apologise.ended up having a sandwich at home.this is one place we will not be going again.

Delicious food served by a polite and efficient waitress named Izzy. Nothing was too much trouble for her. The pub quiz was entertaining. Will definitely again

Came here for lunch at 1ish with my boyfriend as a start for our anniversary weekend before we head off to wales we were seved by the lovely joany who even though it was rather busy served us with a smile and helped with recommendations on the menu as we aren’t super familia with the pub. The food we was served was amazing, my boyfriend ordered the fish and was over the moon this has helped start the weekend positively and definitely will be returning!

This place is brilliant. Been a few times for food and it's always bob on. Called in for breakfast last Sunday and was not disappointed.

The White lion is the best pub for food in the area

First visit to this pub and was very impressed with it. Larger inside than it looks with excellent all round facilities. Lively and friendly staff and good value drinks. One to visit

Lovely sunday roasts! We enjoyed a meal here last night and we were recommended the roast dinners by our server Annabel. She was polite and helpful and answered all our questions . We will be sure to visit again soon!!

We go to the White Lion every Tuesday for the quiz and something to eat before. The food is always excellent and the staff so friendly. Special shout-out to Lucy who looks after us all night long. This is a great, local pub which is really popular and never empty.

Had lunch at the White Lion. Really lovely, flavoursome fresh food. The gin and tonic, again, just tasted very fresh, and the latte to finish was lovely. Staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was very relaxed.

We visited the white lion for the 3rd time on Sunday and this place never fails food and service was excellent. My wife and I both had the steak and ale pie which is by far our favourite. Our waitress Izzy was very friendly and helpful through can’t wait to return

We’ve dined here several times , sometimes just the 2 of us or with family. Our firm favourite is the lamb and mint suet pudding or steak pie . Both delicious! But today we opted for the Sunday lunch , I can honestly say it was one of the best roast dinners I’ve had out in a very long time. I couldn’t fault anything. Always really good portions and good price.We sat outside( inside is usually booked up) but to be honest we now prefer outdoor. The booths are heated and very comfy . Staff are always lovely. Highly recommended.

Had lunch here today and had a tuna sandwich and chips. I had expected a little salad, but it was all just very beige and a little underwhelming. The chips were nice but that's it and for £9.25 it was very disappointing.

Great food, amazing gluten free choices. Was a bit worried about just turning up for a table as booking wasn’t available online and no answer to the phone only voicemail. But so glad we took the risk on our way home. Highly recommend!

Nice place for a quiet meal , quick service and quality staff.

I used to visit the white lion a few times for their breakfasts but had not been for a few months. Was looking forward to the "matt's" breakfast off the menu. Plus an Americano with milk. The coffee wss barely luke warm when it arrived, but still tasted nice. The breakfast came and I do not know if they are using cheaper ingredients to save money after the huge refurbishment for the beautiful outdoor seating area because the sausage which used to be like a Lincoln sausage and then a tasty Cumberland was now thinner and bland, the bacon was very fatty, the mushrooms were tiny button ones just bigger than a garden pea in size and the tomato was a full tomato sliced in half and presumably put on the griddle for a millisecond as it wasn't cooked and was cold. The black pudding was nice though as was the brown bread used for toast. So I was disappointed because it used to be very good.

Great looking pub, excellent service but unfortunately the food I received (Filo Parcels) looked spectacular but was bland, far too much filo for the filling, vegetables with the meal were mediocre (at best) and the dish was dry and needed more than a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. As far as vegetarian offerings were concerned they were limited and this pub has gone for the option of if it's good enough for vegans its good enough for vegetarians - they mainly concentrate on bean burger, bean chilli or Quorn (I'm sorry but I personally don't understand why a vegetarian wants to eat something that resembles meat in both appearance and texture). Please have a little more imagination/choice for vegetarians - mushrooms, halloumi

The food was lovely, as usual. We had the petite fish and chips and chicken stir fry. The staff, especially Molly, were very attentive and accommodating. A nice way to spend a couple of hours with friends.

Still serving up fabulous food and excellent service. No wonder people have to book weeks in advance.

We booked a table for a birthday in the pubs outside area. It was a lovely evening and we were kept nice and warm by the heater. Our waitress Milly was lovely and she looked after us really well ensuring we had everything we needed. Our food was lovely, never had an empty drink and we were very impressed. We will be back :)

Great food, value and service at the recently refurbished White Lion. Several nights are themed including quiz and poker nights. On Saturday live music is sometimes also played to supplement the great beer and food. The pub is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner always to a high standard. For lunch and dinner booking a table is advised because of the pub's popularity. There is a main menu and a light bites menu and food on the latter menu is plentiful at lunchtime. In addition to the inside seating, there are outside booths which are pleasant, especially in good weather.

My first visit to this lovely country inn. At first glance, the premises looks very small. However, it is very deceiving and large when you enter. The decor is very inviting. I had the Steak and onion baguette with chunky chips, my Mum had the Minted lamb suet pudding and chunky chips and my Dad had the Steak and onion baguette with fries loaded with beef chili, jalapeños and cheese. The portions were very good and the serving staff were efficient and friendly. At a total cost of £53, including drinks, the prices are average for such a place. Booking is recommended as it can get busy, and the car park can get full. I would come back again to sample other items on the menu.

We arrived to a very friendly server who showed us to our seats and had our drink before we had our coats off. Our food arrived quickly, and I was gobsmacked with the portions. Very tasty. We left well fed and very satisfied.

Called in advance to ask if the outside area was dog friendly for breakfast. Told Yes! Arrived first and was greeted by a friendly staff member who I asked again if older, extremely well trained service dogs would be OK outside? Told again. Yes, no problem, (There was littrally no one else outside.) The waitress arrived and I explained the dogs were Guide and Service dogs and we were part of a large party of 28 blind and disabled adults and children about to arrive. As I am explaining and ordering breakfast for myself, an dirty looking angry guy (who I assume was the manager) stormed up to the table and demanded the dogs be put on a lead or else we should leave. He seemed very pleased with himself showing off how important he was. The shocked young waitress gave me a look that suggested that this was his normal ugly behaviour. Without a word I left, we took our whole group into Wigan, where we have had all our meetings this past week. We spend on average app £2600 per day on food and drinks. While we are all saying in the Writtington area, we feel unfriendly, and aggressive behaviour should absolutely lose all our trade. Please think twice before putting your money into a place that has a manager who clearly shows his true unpleasant nature to passing disabled strangers.

Very bust and good to see, large portions are value is good. However food is now average. Still worth a visit though.

We arrived early but was told the table was ready... We had to ask to have it cleaned. Ordered food but the table had no cutlery on it. After finishing our first course young lady took away your plates and asked if we wanted a dessert menu? Told her we hadn't our main course yet... First time here and what a fabulous pub. Really friendly and professional staff, always smiling and happy to help. Excellent menu, varied and well cooked. It's huge by the way, and despite that it was rammed. Another massive plus for us is that it's dog friendly! It even has a doggie menu! Highly recommended 👍👍

We've been for breakfast a few time lately. There's always a friendly and welcoming vibe, and the log fire has been great to sit down next to on the recent cold mornings The food portions are generous with a great variety of options available from the more traditional English style breakfast to pancakes etc, including vegan or gluten free options. The staff have been courteous and helpful, with a special shout out to Annabel who was bright and chirpy, quick to help and able to answer any queries we had around the menu. A real credit to the place. The place is dog friendly (and even has a doggie menu) although we haven't taken ours in yet We'll definitely be back

Very dissatisfied with our visit. Food came out luke warm. When we asked the waitress if they had lasagne she confirmed they did, so we ordered this for our daughter, after a couple of bites realised it was vegetable lasagne knowing they where in the wrong they offered to replace with a different meal but the veg lasagne made my daughter feel sick (too much cheese) so didn’t want anything further to eat, however when we raised this with the manageress she abruptly said this was our fault for not reading the menu, unfortunately when being told something by your staff its lead to believe you are being told correct information and was refused a refund for this, also we where overcharged,, we come quiet regular for breakfast and haven't had any issues previous. This visit was a disappointment and we will not be returning as we where planning on doing later on in the week.
