We had the most wonderful meal and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was very busy and a testament to how good it is.

Room very dark, service slow and the ploughman’s was awful, very hard bread, pate just a runny mess, hardly any ham or cheese, very disappointing and overpriced at £12.95 would not go again

5/5 5th MARCH 2025 ‘Wandering Wednesday’…. ‘ASH WEDNESDAY’ no meat for us day, just fish!….. So! this week took us back to the ‘The White Lion’ in Wrightington, Wigan…… for one of the best fish and chips meals we’ve had previously and today, this gem of a pub didn’t fail us….. Our server today was a lady named Vicky, she was very polite, courteous, smiley and attentive, thanks for making our lunch so pleasant. The pub was very busy as always, and no wonder with the dishes the chefs create, portion sizes are big and presented perfectly and you can see this with every plate that past us, my eyes were like a kids in a sweetie shop!! standards are very high in this eatery…. Thank you….x Starters: Neil had spicy sweetcorn and pepper, hearty thick soup…… with a wedge of homemade seeded loaf, along with plenty of butter. I had creamy garlic mushrooms on toasted, garlic ciabatta and it definitely didn’t skimp of the mushrooms, garnished with a tendril of pea shoots. Entrée’s: Neil and I both had the same, proper homemade chips, freshly battered thick, chunky Cod, with a wedge of lemon, the batter was lovely and light and the flakes of Cod fell apart, this was accompanied with a pot of mushy peas, tartare sauce and of course I had ketchup too! We then shared a cheesy garlic pizza and definitely not skinny on the cheese, it was lovely and stringy! All the food was PIPING hot and flavoursome…. It’s advised to book in advance and this establishment is always very busy and once you’ve been, you’ll totally understand why! Will we be back??? What do you think!!!

Sorry to say this because the waitress was lovely and very professional. But the meal was chicken and duphaisse potatoes which I have eat many times before at this restaurant. It had no flavour and was disgusting. Who the hec yesterday was cooking. As the replacement meal of fish and chips replaced in 6 minutes was disgusting too. A complete waste of £53.

Visited for the first time for breakfast this week. The food was outstanding, service warm and friendly and atmosphere quiet and calm. Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely return again soon.

We had two Sunday roast lamb dinners which were brilliant. A staff member advised that they did breakfast from 10 - 12, so the next day visited for breakfast I had the large breakfast and my partner the slightly smaller, again brilliant. The quality of the food on both meals were superb and the staff couldnt do enough for us. .. very highly recommended 5☆

Food can sometimes be a little hit and miss. I had the lamb kebab and the lamb was tough, I wouldn't have this again. The gammon is lovely though. On the plus side the staff are always exceptionally professional and give a wonderful service. It does also have a lovely atmosphere.

Great place especially if you are a dog owner, they have a doggy menu and a fabulous outdoor space. The indoor space is lovely too. The portions are really big and the food and service is really good.

Visited the White Lion last night for food and was greeted by Amber. Food was very good and all the staff we met were very friendly and welcoming. Amber in particular was a real gem.

I don't really write reviews but felt I had to with regards to the White Lion. The atmosphere, cleanliness. staff and food is to die for. Best food I have ever tasted in any public house. This place is a little gem. 10/10 from me.

This is one of my favourite places to eat. It's a little out the way for us so we don't come as much as I'd like but when we do we are never let down! The food options are unreal, especially for me (as a coeliac). There's even more than 1 option of dessert I can have! It's decorated beautifully, the service is always spot on so we always leave a good tip. The food is always spot on and considering how busy it always is there is never a long wait on food. I've never know a restaurant to work so well in every area, who ever is running this place is doing a fantastic job and all the staff are smashing it. 10/10 from me.

Booked a table for Sunday 26th of January for my wife's birthday. The staff were very friendly and helpful . The food was excellent. I had the cow and goat burger, which was cooked to perfection. My wife had the gammon, which she really enjoyed. The portion sizes were quite substantial compared to other establishments. Great value for money. Would highly recommend the white lion. We will definitely be back.

I thought the breakfast was poor in comparison to other local establishments that do breakfast for a similar price. I felt the components of it were of poor quality. However, it's got great parking, a lovely outdoor area that we'll return to in the summer, excellent staff and amazing fast service. A plus that it allows dogs.

Absolutely incredible from the moment you walk in you feel comfortable the decor is lovely the staff are more than welcoming the presntation is just 10 star 🌟 oh and the food well let me start by saying get your coat on and go see for yourself!! It's remarkable 👏 🙌

We've had the breakfast experience, now we have tried the Sunday Lunch too.... and it was really nice. It was a snowy day so wasn't expecting it to be packed... booked the day before. The roast was nice... the beef was very soft, but thin.... so i would have liked a thicker slice.. but that's personal preference... the veg all fresh and cooked well. As always and with pretty much most pubs, the roast potatos are just not up standard... but this must be a storage or keeping them warm issue. But I will still be going again.

We called in here for lunch, we hadn’t booked and although the Carpark/pub was busy we were seated immediately and the service was fast. The food was very nice and full of flavour, will definately be back and would recommend The White Lion.

This is a great pub serving great food, the garlic bread with cheese was delicious, the cock and bull that I had was tasty, the lamb Sunday roast my partner loved and the kids cheeseburger was enjoyed too with great service.

Went for Christmas Eve lunch, food was amazing, friendly, competent staff. The owner went to every table to ensure his guests were happy with everything. Highly recommend 👌

Great place to visit for a drink with the dogs. Also has a doggy food menu! Service was slow and had to reorder drinks twice as we had been forgotten about. It was very busy but would visit again!

We were a party of 9 on the 21/12/24 not all had starters but our main meal [traditional turkey ect] was less than appetising mainly the turkey was a roll wrapped in undercooked bacon with stuffing in the middle not sliced as expected with stuffing separate as my wife does not like stuffing this was off-putting to say the least and 3 of our party have since had stomach upsets overnight, we have had many great meals here but this meal was dissapointing.

Wonderful meal as always, despite the storm we sat outside to hear the local brass band playing carols. Food was delicious and the team were helpful polite and worked hard. This place can’t really put a foot wrong, whatever time of year or occasion.

Just had the nicest pub meal I've had in years and years. Great variety. Fresh and hot and great portions. An absolute MUST if you haven't already tried here. There was 10 of us and every meal was outstanding.

Fabulous food the menu they have is enough choice, which means that the quality is good. Great friendly staff. We sat near the open fire 🔥 which was so comfy. There were only 4 of us, so I'm not sure how larger groups would fare, but the food arrived very quickly. I'm looking forward to eating there again. In the Summer there's a lovely custom build area outside. Sorry, no photos.

Great pub which also has a lovely outside eating/drinking area. Visited here many times so group of 8 booked their Christmas menu and none of us were disappointed, the food was excellent. We all had a mixture of the set menu (3 courses) and the only plates that weren't empty were the ones where there was too much food as the portions are big and we needed space for pudding. Atmosphere was great and the staff were all friendly and smiling, not a miserable one in sight, which makes a change from other places. The pub was fully booked so shows how popular it is. Price for set menu was reasonable and we will definitely be returning in the near future. Note, it's dog friendly and even has a doggy menu.

Visited again as part of our daughter’s football team Xmas party. Ellie and Matt provided food for all the girls that was superb, as always. The Mrs had a chicken and bacon baguette with slim fries. Packed with lots of filling and tons of chips. As usual I had the hot and spicy pizza. My god super tasty and full, and I mean full of chillies. Exactly how you want a hot pizza. The Guinness was very good as well. Poured right and very enjoyable. Cannot wait to visit again.

Attended the White Lion today for Christmas lunch with my creative writing group . The meal was excellent, the staff were welcoming and very helpful. The tables were decorated to a very high standard and the whole ambiance of the place was beautiful. It is my first visit here but will certainly not be my last

Lovely place.. been a few times.. called in for lunch. Had Sweet chilli chicken stir-fry with rice.. from the Light Bite menu. It was Huge 😃👍👍👍

A really delicious meal in a very welcoming atmosphere. The staff ensured that we had everything we needed and the food was excellent. My gammon was very tasty and the Bakewell pudding was absolutely superb, so light. The White Lion is at the top of its game.

My dad and I ate here having prebooked for 6pm. Glad we got there before it got very busy. Many friends had recommended to me, and we weren't disappointed. The service was exceptional (thank you Amber), and the food even better. My dad's 10oz rump steak was perfectly cooked, and I had the cheese, onion and potato pie, which was delicious. Both came with lovely chunky 'proper' chips. Huge portions! Thank you White Lion for a lovely meal, we will come again and I will absolutely recommend to anyone.

Eaten here several times breakfasts and evening meals. Food has always been excellent and service likewise. You need to book in advance. Sunday breakfast is first class, everything is well cooked and service is quick. Prices aren't at all bad either. Go treat yourself.

My family used to live in Shevington many years ago. A couple of weeks ago I suggested as a family we should go to Bygone times and then have something to eat at the white lion. It was on a Sunday and the pub was packed. From the moment we walked in I was blown away by the staff, how friendly they were. Nothing was too much trouble and food was superb. This is how a pub should be run. The staff are an absolute credit and if I was a local l'd be a lucky old man. The cappuccino rounded it off nicely. Happily recommend this pub all day long

Called in for lunch with my wife and dog. Staff very friendly and accommodating . The food was served quickly and piping hot. We enjoyed our visit very much .Thank You.

Decided to have the Steak & Ale Pie. Would have given the meal 5 stars if the pie hadn’t been microwaved. The pastry was very rubbery and inedible, however the meat inside was good. Staff was friendly and the service was quick. If we do return I would try another dish. Easy to park.

We got a takeout sunday lunch and it’s the best by far . Will definitely do this again . We usually go to the restaurant for food but we have lots on at home so thought we give it a try . Thankyou White Lion

Fab a little expensive but you pay for what you get. Don't get the arancini though as it was disappointing the rice and chicken were mushed and so had little texture or flavour.

This is an amazing rural pub and restaurant that is open from 9am for breakfast. The food is simply the best with local produce and a wide variety of choice. Not like some places who won’t let the customers alter their meal the staff will make sure you get what you want on your plate. Poached eggs that were cooked to perfection and proper sourdough toast! Visited on a Sunday evening following a level day at the races. We ordered hot n spicy Pizza and a meat feast. The mrs had gammon steak. The food was super tasty and piping hot. For once a pub that serves proper spicy pizza. All too often there are about 2 jalapeños on a “spicy” pizza. But this bad boy had plenty on with red chillies as well. Brilliant. The meat feast my daughter had were stacked with toppings and the cheese was plentiful. The gammon steak was as thick as the doorstep into the pub! And looked delicious. Ellie and Matt have done a brilliant job in creating a local pub and restaurant that Hunger Hill should be very proud to have. We are lucky to know them a little through our football team and it’s clear the hard work of the team of the restaurant adds to the brilliant customer service. The serving girls never stop walking around checking if food is correct and whether the drinks need replenishing. First time eating there for us. It certainly won’t be the last.

Went for breakfast and the food was amazing! Everyrhing was spot on and the food came out fast, our waitress Isla was amazing and recommended which items are most popular and she was so friendly and pleasant. Definitely will be returning!!

Absolutely delicious food. I had the steak and ale pie and my wife had the crispy beef salad. Our server was Isla who was amazing, she brought us blankets as we were sat outside and a water bowl for the dog. Such a well run pub will definitely be returning!

This spot is great to park your motorhome in the Carpark for the night while you exlplore. And don't get me started on the food. If I could give it more I would it was all amazing

Heard so much about the White Lion breakfast and this morning did not disappoint! Everything cooked perfect and hot, friendly staff and nice atmosphere, cant fault and will definitely recommend! Not that i need to....car park was full at 9.45!!!!

Tried the steak & ale pie,I was unable to finish my meal due to the amount of pie. Absolutely delicious,My wife had the Lamb & mint suet pudding , also delicious would definitely return .

Less than a mile from Junction 27 of the M6. Extensive menu including specials. Cask ales pouring today were on the traditional side from Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company. Huge outdoor seating area - much undercover with heaters and blankets if necessary.

Called in for a quick bite to eat. Food was delicious. Great portions. Special mention to Rosie our waitress who looked after us exceptionally well. Thank you so much for a great visit! We will be back

Disgusting Experience – Never Returning I’ve been a regular at The White Lion, but after my recent visit on Saturday, September 28th, I will never return. My girlfriend and I came for breakfast and, what started as a usual meal, quickly turned into an appalling experience. As we began eating, a waitress came over to ask if everything was okay, but before we could answer, we saw a small, defenseless field mouse run across the floor. What followed was about 15 minutes of my girlfriend and the waitress trying to catch it—until the chef stepped in and disgustingly stamped on it, killing it. This was an unnecessary and appalling act. If food hygiene was the concern, how does spreading the mouse’s remains across the floor, and onto the chef’s shoes, which he would wear all day, meet hygiene standards? The entire situation was handled horribly. My girlfriend, who had been trying to catch the poor creature, was left shocked and upset, watching as her food went cold, only for the mouse to be violently killed. This was a revolting display, and we are completely disgusted. I will be taking this experience further because this establishment should be ashamed of itself. Never again.

Visited Saturday 28/09/24 a party of 11 to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary as this is our favourite restaurant. As always staff amazing, service amazing, service was fantastic all our food came out at the same time and was all piping hot and was up to is highest standard as always.

The entrance to the dining area via the steps was not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. The food was far too hot when it arrived and took ages to cool to a ready to eat temperature. The gammon was very salty. The service staff were very good. They were friendly and very obliging. The atmosphere was very hot and extremely noisy, to the extent that it was even difficult to have a conversation with persons sat next to. It didn't used to be like that. Some kind of air conditioning is needed and maybe less overcrowding.

First time visit, impressed by the friendly staff and the lovely ambience. Food, drink and service well worth the money. Thank you so much for a great meal.

Visited today for some lunch. Food was really nice, seated very quickly and staff were brilliant. Scarlett was great getting my daughter some colouring sheets and pencils, checking everything was ok with the meal and keeping our drinks topped up. I have been a few times over the years, always been a top notch meal.

Stopped off for a drink on our travels and glad we did! Very nice place with plenty of seating area, dog friendly and although we never ate we looked at what others were eating and it looked lovely...... will definitely be trying out the menu soon!

Great food with nice friendly staff

Just had Sunday lunch at the white lion, Mediocre at best, the parsnips were barely cooked the roast potatoes not really roasted ie no crispy skin but the starter I had was very poor. The Mussels although tasty in the sauce 3 of them were empty shells and 1 was completely closed so inedible. When I pointed this out to the waitress I got “ oh dear”, had great expectations but sorry to say it didn’t live up.

Disappointed waited 40mins for main meal I had sirloin steak with truffle fries and herb salad, There was no truffle on the fries and the salad was just watercress, the steak had a lit of sinew. My partner ordered lambs liver and bacon, It must of been under the heat lamp for a very long time the lamb was rock hard and the vegetables were shriveled, Over all disappointed, we didn't send it vack as so hungry after our wait. Staff very nice
