White Horse Cafe in Hambleton

The service was horrible, I sat upstairs hoping to have a lovely meal while it's nice up there the waitress who was working kept giving me weird looks and laughing at her phone. I know it might not have been aimed at me but it's still not a nice feeling when I was just trying to enjoy my dinner.

Nice place and presented well with good service . Food is average to good depending what you get. Atmosphere is likewise depending on the clientele. Prices are reasonable for the location. There are many alternatives for eats in the area. We had a takeaway on our visit this time; the fish was done well with crispy batter, yet the chips were soft and floppy - we like ours with a little crunch. Overall it was pleasant enough but nothing to write home about.

Simply the best fish and chips I've ever had,fish batter was light fish was delicious.... chips were simply the best, I only wish this cafe was nearer home the staff were friendly and the place was spotless!.... Came back 2 years later, service excellent again, friendly staff, simply gorgeous fish and chips..... A reason to go to Thirsk!

After some pretty bad fish and chip cafes in Fife I remembered a visit my wife, daughter, granddaughter and I had to this place. The service was good, the restaurant was very clean and the fish suppers were bang on. Not a hint of grease and the fish still moist and perfectly cooked. Even the tea was decent.

10/10 fish and chips. Cooked fresh every time. Always busy. Seating outside for those who have take away and want to sit in fresh air. Great place to get fish and chips

Came today for a late breakfast / lunch, we were I tally surprised as it looked like just a fish and chip shop but the lady behind the counter said they were still doing breakfasts. We went upstairs and it says wait to be seated so we stood there, for a lady to say hi find yourselves a table. We sat down and decided what we wanted and I went to order. Same lady told us she comes to us to take our order. I went and sat back down and waited. Eventually she takes our order and brings us 2 cans of pop and a half a slice of bread buttered 1 half white and 1 half brown. My partner had fish and chips £13.95 I think and I had the breakfast minus the black pudding. £8.95. Each can of pop turned out to be £2 each. My food was not good, half of it was inedible,bacon was like thick cardboard and cold, tomatoes were pretty much raw, beans were hot and sausage was luke warm. The sausage was a large saveloy you would get on a chip shop tea not what I thought I'd get on a breakfast, mushrooms were dry but I ate them and I had 2 fried eggs that were very runny. I left half my meal and didn't enjoy the half I ate. No one came to ask us how our meal was so as we got up we mentioned it to the lady who served us. She said I will knock off the price of the drinks. I then decided to search local Fb pages for breakfast recommendations and remarkably not one mention for this place. Very poor food, a little lacking in customer service too in my opinion. Tell customers when they arrive that you will come and take their order. Ask what bread they would like. Check if everything is OK before people are ready to leave

The White Horse Cafe in Thirsk serves the best fish & chips that I have ever tasted, the fish is beautiful & the chips are what I call proper chips (not frozen), you can either buy to take out & sit at tables provided or you can go upstairs into the cafe where it's served to you with a friendly smile & it's spotlessly clean, we drive 40 miles to visit The White Horse Cafe if you want a beautiful tasty fish & chip meal it's worth the journey, we have tried many fish & chip shops including the world famous Harry Ramsdens & none of them come close to being as nice!

Called in from the races lastnight, got fish and chip,, possibly best fish and chips av ever had.. delicious thanks....

No gluten free so went to the chippy round the corner to the Westgate big sign outside saying gluten free available so they got my money plus cheaper better portions and just as nice

Always friendly, and good coffee and books . This is a lovely experience, and we will be back next time we are in town. The garden is nice too

Not sure what happened. tonight. Food normally excellent from this place. Got my fish and chips home, chips were anemic and still hard in places, fish was all batter. Not sure if it was because it was the end of the day or all they had left but it was rammy. Disappointing.

Lunch today at White Horse Cafe in Thirsk. Upstairs table at front window looking out over High Street. Very good quality Haddock and chips, mushy peas and buttered bread. Cooked well, nice crispy batter too. Staff very pleasant and excellent service, very reasonable prices too. Highly recommended

I had the worst ice cream I have ever had. Apart from being ripped off at 2.70 or 2.80 not sure very small but the ice cream with a tasteless small flake if you could call it that Milk frozen tasteless how dare the sell that rubbish and pay that much they should be ashamed what happened was it a new person or just maybe they couldn’t be bothered 😕 I would have took it back but we were driving home, I will be back though

Great fish and chips! I could swear they used to have a larger menu selection to cover other fish and seafood dishes years ago.. I'm not sure... But either way it's brilliant. Go try em out!

We visited Thirsk last week and had lunch here in the restaurant which was very good. The restaurant was air conditioned which was very welcome as it was a very warm and sunny day. I had the senior citizen special and my wife had the Yorkshire fish cake both with mushy peas and curry sauce, served with a pot of tea. The service was quick, friendly and attentive and good value, we will definitely visit again.

Service was quick to say there was a long queue. Got fish and chips to take home. Fish very bland and taste less . 3 of us didn't like it so won't be returning

Very good restaurant above the shop with a view over the square. The food was piping hot and the service is always a pleasure. We went for the mature persons package! Good thing as the portions were more than enough. Consistently good value.

When you place a review, you might imagine that it's just another round of enthusiastic applause. One year ago l visited White Horse for fish and chips. Today l visited 12 months later and guess what. The fish and chips were STILL absolutely delicious ! My son and l were delighted again. I have had many fish and chips all over the UK. This is the best. I hope it's not another 12 months till l taste them again. How do they get that flavour??? That consistency? Not overly oily either. Very generous portions in a custom house presentation box. I'd give more stars if l could. One review 12 months apart. Still amazing.

The best burger I've had in a long time!!! Highly recommended if you fancy some really good quality food.

Ordered 2 breakfasts (which according to the menu, is sausage, bacon, 2 fried eggs, mushrooms, black pudding and cooked tomato), we were asked if we wanted complimentary black pudding. Also ordered 1 tea & 1 coffee to come with food. Drinks arrived shortly followed by breakfasts which were returned because tomatoes not cooked. 7 minutes later breakfasts arrived again with cold bacon. 3rd time lucky breakfasts arrived after 10 minutes everything is fine except no mushrooms which came within seconds. Unfortunately the drinks we ordered to come with food were long gone but we're taken off the bill.

We arrived too late for the cafe but had them sat outside in the car. Fish was really nice and tasty and the chips were chunky and well cooked. Lovely.

Quick visit with grandchildren. Good service and ample portion sizes for adults and children both

This is one of our best three fish and chip shops. Probably the best out of the three. The others being in Pickering and Keswick.

Excellent place to eat , all 5 lunches ordered were delicious . Very friendly service and quick . We will definately be returning.

I went for the steak pie, it was of good quality, plenty of meat, no fat, nicely cooked chips and a pot of gravy on the side. I was lucky enough to get a window seat too, love vehicle watching on a busy high street, could have sat there hours.

The food was decent with a good portion size. Very fast service with a great location.

What a lovely place, the staff were fantastic and when we had a little problem the lady who looked after our table could not have been more helpful. Was very friendly and the atmosphere was great.

After a lovely morning horse trekking at Boltby Trekking Centre, we wanted some fish and chips. Sheila recommended we try out the White Horse Cafe which we did and we had the best fish and chips thus far. We had a steak pie as well as an English breakfast. The portions were large and the food scrumptious . The food was reasonably priced and has a discount for the elderly too. The cafe is so clean and the staff was attentive. Yes, the toilets do merit a mention as they were very clean and bright. The cafe is next to the clock tower in the scenic part of town. You can park in front of the cafe which is cheaper or park at the back of the Cafe near Marriage Lane, next to the river.

Situated on the first floor above the chip shop this is a really good place to eat. I believe it seats 70+ (not sure where I saw this) but there’s lots of space and great views down onto the Market Place. It’s a comfortable and cosy venue with some lovely features-quirky fish shapes, big mirror… The toilets deserve a mention as they are bright, spotless and plenty of room. It was difficult to choose lunch as everything looked so good, but we eventually settled on a pensioner special together with steak pie and chips plus another pot of tea. The portions were very generous and food cooked to perfection; we enjoyed our lunch! I loved the fact that our cutlery was wrapped in the serviette and sealed with a branded sticker. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We were only visiting for a few hours but if we come back to Thirsk, White Horse Cafe will definitely be our lunch venue of choice.

Can’t believe this is the same place as we visited last year ! And gave the food and service top marks .. This evening was the worst quality and ungenerous portion of fish I have ever witnessed tiny fish which I doubt was cod .. and chips so thick they were undercooked and raw .. ladies on counter however very efficient and pleasant . Last year the fish was definitely cod large chunky and fresh tasting and chips delicious for £9 for one portion this wasn’t a good tasty experience . Won’t be coming back anytime soon . So disappointing .

Our fish, chips, and mushy peas in the restaurant were excellent. The batter on the fish was the best I have ever tasted. We will definitely call in again if we are in the area. Our tea was nice and hot and plenty strong enough, and we had extra hot water to add to the pot too. There was a nice ambience to the restaurant overall. We would highly recommend you to call here.

What has happened to this fish&chip cafe. We've been coming here for over 40 years. What a disappointment today, the batter was greasy and the chips were anemic. Fish tasteless.

Not eaten upstairs before. Nicely done out and fast efficient friendly staff. Could ask for more really. Air con was a little on the cold side but the food was piping hot and came quite quickly. Can certainly recommend.

Sat outside nice weather and a great vib in the centre of thirst. Lovely coffee and toasted tea cake followed but a tasty Mr Whippy 99 with monkey blood.

Absolutely amazing fish and chips. Standard size was enough for me and I'm a good eater! Had with pot of tea and mushy peas n bread which helps to fill you too. Son had scampi and it was beautiful (obviously had to try 1!). Husband had the large fish and chips and it was huge. Only order it of you are a big eater lol. Without the bread and tea, maybe I could take that on but it would be a struggle. Couldn't fault a thing and the girls serving us were lovely friendly and attentive. Thank you x

On a drizzly July day, this restaurant in Thirsk was a ray of sunshine. We had intended just to have a scone and tea but the smell of the fish and chips was too tempting. So pleased we changed our minds. The fish just melted in your mouth, with piping hot tasty chips. Mum had a senior meal which included peas and a drink- what a great offer. The staff were very polite and friendly. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting Thirsk.

Great food & Service..We enjoyed the pensioners special...The big low was the gents cubicle would not flush...Hygine facilities are just as important to me as the Food, Service and Atmosphere which I scored ...

Sells lots of other things fishcakes, peas , curry sausage etc. On a fine day nice to sit outside in the nice market place of Thirsk. Plenty of seating. Parking on the market place, first hour free.

Lovely fish and chips if you’re in the area. Restaurant upstairs if you don’t want a takeout. Staff are really nice that we met and was helpful with allergy enquiries.

Walked in shop, sitting behind the frier window was a miserable small overcooked fish. Hoped I didn't get it, but I did, so I asked for a swap. I would have felt ashamed for dishing it out compared to what else was on offer, unfortunately the lady behind the counter thought she was dishing out school dinners and didnt give a monkeys about offering any kind of customer service and forced it upon me. Absolutely no attempt to keep their customers happy. Next time I come to Thirsk I find somewhere that cares about what they are dishing up.

I asked for a battered sausage and chips. Owners response, We don't batter sausages, we do 'em plain around 'ere!"

Called in today for lunch. It was busy, which is understandable. However, we waited at the holding area and was eventually provided with a table. Whilst seated, 20 minutes later, we were still sitting at the table waiting for our order to be taken. No option to order at the till as they come to your table. It seems that they take orders from customers , and instead of taking the next order, they wait until the food has been served before moving on to take the next order. This seems to be why customers are waiting for ages. Even if a drinks order was taken first, that would be something. Or, just a mention from any members of staff as customers arrive to say 'sorry we are really busy there might be a long wait'. At least then you can decide whether to leave or not at the time. Whilst we were waiting, a lot of tables had become free, and we just could not understand the way they work. We left after almost half an hour waiting and went elsewhere. It's nice to be busy, but please look after all your customers. After all, it's those customers that make you busy in the first place! P.S. Sure the food would have been nice. It certainly smelled like it. It's a shame we didn't get to try it!

Update 6/04/23: called in for fish and chips, very nice 👍🤩 battered black pudding and battered hamburgers for those that fancy a challenge 😅 Quick stop at the White Horse Cafe for a cheeky ice cream 🍨 whilst the weather was nice and sunny ☀️⛅

The restaurant was immaculately clean, neat, spacious, and attractively decorated with a simple but pleasing style. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was tasty and enjoyable, although I found the fish a little greasy and the chips a little dry (they didn't seem like your 'normal' deep fat fried unhealthy type, that I like!). The food was served on warmed plates, which is excellent. The price was reasonable and an enjoyable meal.

Without doubt one of the best of the best in fish and chip world. The best of the best can only be found in Yorkshire by the way. 😀
