White Horse Cafe in Hambleton

This is one of our best three fish and chip shops. Probably the best out of the three. The others being in Pickering and Keswick.

I went for the steak pie, it was of good quality, plenty of meat, no fat, nicely cooked chips and a pot of gravy on the side. I was lucky enough to get a window seat too, love vehicle watching on a busy high street, could have sat there hours.

The food was decent with a good portion size. Very fast service with a great location.

What a lovely place, the staff were fantastic and when we had a little problem the lady who looked after our table could not have been more helpful. Was very friendly and the atmosphere was great.

After a lovely morning horse trekking at Boltby Trekking Centre, we wanted some fish and chips. Sheila recommended we try out the White Horse Cafe which we did and we had the best fish and chips thus far. We had a steak pie as well as an English breakfast. The portions were large and the food scrumptious . The food was reasonably priced and has a discount for the elderly too. The cafe is so clean and the staff was attentive. Yes, the toilets do merit a mention as they were very clean and bright. The cafe is next to the clock tower in the scenic part of town. You can park in front of the cafe which is cheaper or park at the back of the Cafe near Marriage Lane, next to the river.

Situated on the first floor above the chip shop this is a really good place to eat. I believe it seats 70+ (not sure where I saw this) but there’s lots of space and great views down onto the Market Place. It’s a comfortable and cosy venue with some lovely features-quirky fish shapes, big mirror… The toilets deserve a mention as they are bright, spotless and plenty of room. It was difficult to choose lunch as everything looked so good, but we eventually settled on a pensioner special together with steak pie and chips plus another pot of tea. The portions were very generous and food cooked to perfection; we enjoyed our lunch! I loved the fact that our cutlery was wrapped in the serviette and sealed with a branded sticker. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We were only visiting for a few hours but if we come back to Thirsk, White Horse Cafe will definitely be our lunch venue of choice.

Fantastic fish and chips. Always busy but the team are efficient so the queue moves quickly. Delicious every time. Highly recommended, both as take away and wat in at upstairs restaurant.

However my day was soured because a fellow customer gave me a distasteful glance after i toasted the lovely staff. I think they were jealous of my status and popularity in Thirsk. Our fish, chips, and mushy peas in the restaurant were excellent. The batter on the fish was the best I have ever tasted. We will definitely call in again if we are in the area. Our tea was nice and hot and plenty strong enough, and we had extra hot water to add to the pot too. There was a nice ambience to the restaurant overall. We would highly recommend you to call here.

What has happened to this fish&chip cafe. We've been coming here for over 40 years. What a disappointment today, the batter was greasy and the chips were anemic. Fish tasteless.

Sat outside nice weather and a great vib in the centre of thirst. Lovely coffee and toasted tea cake followed but a tasty Mr Whippy 99 with monkey blood.

Not eaten upstairs before. Nicely done out and fast efficient friendly staff. Could ask for more really. Air con was a little on the cold side but the food was piping hot and came quite quickly. Can certainly recommend.

Fantastic sit down meal, excellent value. Star of the show for me was the battered black pudding 👌 Fish and chips were excellent as well. Well worth a visit if in area.

Fish cooked to order so lovely hot and crispy. Chips were ok but I like them crispy too. Good portion size for £9. Sat outside in the market Square. Followed it by a passable soft Ice Cream cone.

Food was tasty. Pie was delicious. Sausage not very hot. Gravy and chips very nice.

Absolutely amazing fish and chips. Standard size was enough for me and I'm a good eater! Had with pot of tea and mushy peas n bread which helps to fill you too. Son had scampi and it was beautiful (obviously had to try 1!). Husband had the large fish and chips and it was huge. Only order it of you are a big eater lol. Without the bread and tea, maybe I could take that on but it would be a struggle. Couldn't fault a thing and the girls serving us were lovely friendly and attentive. Thank you x

On a drizzly July day, this restaurant in Thirsk was a ray of sunshine. We had intended just to have a scone and tea but the smell of the fish and chips was too tempting. So pleased we changed our minds. The fish just melted in your mouth, with piping hot tasty chips. Mum had a senior meal which included peas and a drink- what a great offer. The staff were very polite and friendly. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting Thirsk.

Great food & Service..We enjoyed the pensioners special...The big low was the gents cubicle would not flush...Hygine facilities are just as important to me as the Food, Service and Atmosphere which I scored ...

Sells lots of other things fishcakes, peas , curry sausage etc. On a fine day nice to sit outside in the nice market place of Thirsk. Plenty of seating. Parking on the market place, first hour free.

Great fish and chips, good value. Staff are really friendly. We sat outside on a lovely sunny evening and listened to the North Yorkshire fire and rescue service pipe band.

The White Horse Cafe in Thirsk serves the best fish & chips that I have ever tasted, the fish is beautiful & the chips are what I call proper chips (not frozen), you can either buy to take out & sit at tables provided or you can go upstairs into the cafe where it's served to you with a friendly smile & it's spotlessly clean, we drive 40 miles to visit The White Horse Cafe if you want a beautiful tasty fish & chip meal it's worth the journey, we have tried many fish & chip shops including the world famous Harry Ramsdens & none of them come close to being as nice!

Lovely fish and chips if you’re in the area. Restaurant upstairs if you don’t want a takeout. Staff are really nice that we met and was helpful with allergy enquiries.

Walked in shop, sitting behind the frier window was a miserable small overcooked fish. Hoped I didn't get it, but I did, so I asked for a swap. I would have felt ashamed for dishing it out compared to what else was on offer, unfortunately the lady behind the counter thought she was dishing out school dinners and didnt give a monkeys about offering any kind of customer service and forced it upon me. Absolutely no attempt to keep their customers happy. Next time I come to Thirsk I find somewhere that cares about what they are dishing up.

Don't think the fat was hot enough, oily tasting fish & chips Mushy peas looked oddly bright green, not a great taste. Pots of tea super , spot on Service good Price too much for poor portion size

I asked for a battered sausage and chips. Owners response, We don't batter sausages, we do 'em plain around 'ere!"

Called in today for lunch. It was busy, which is understandable. However, we waited at the holding area and was eventually provided with a table. Whilst seated, 20 minutes later, we were still sitting at the table waiting for our order to be taken. No option to order at the till as they come to your table. It seems that they take orders from customers , and instead of taking the next order, they wait until the food has been served before moving on to take the next order. This seems to be why customers are waiting for ages. Even if a drinks order was taken first, that would be something. Or, just a mention from any members of staff as customers arrive to say 'sorry we are really busy there might be a long wait'. At least then you can decide whether to leave or not at the time. Whilst we were waiting, a lot of tables had become free, and we just could not understand the way they work. We left after almost half an hour waiting and went elsewhere. It's nice to be busy, but please look after all your customers. After all, it's those customers that make you busy in the first place! P.S. Sure the food would have been nice. It certainly smelled like it. It's a shame we didn't get to try it!

Update 6/04/23: called in for fish and chips, very nice 👍🤩 battered black pudding and battered hamburgers for those that fancy a challenge 😅 Quick stop at the White Horse Cafe for a cheeky ice cream 🍨 whilst the weather was nice and sunny ☀️⛅

The restaurant was immaculately clean, neat, spacious, and attractively decorated with a simple but pleasing style. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was tasty and enjoyable, although I found the fish a little greasy and the chips a little dry (they didn't seem like your 'normal' deep fat fried unhealthy type, that I like!). The food was served on warmed plates, which is excellent. The price was reasonable and an enjoyable meal.

Without doubt one of the best of the best in fish and chip world. The best of the best can only be found in Yorkshire by the way. 😀

Unplanned visit to Thirsk .. came across this cafe / take away .. Best fish & chip supper had to date . Beautifully served in eco friendly recyclable wrapping napkins forks the works and served by charming pleasant ladies in immaculate clean premises . Fabulous value too . Would give you 6 stars if we could . Visit 23 January evening . 2023 .

I usuay eat inside, upstairs. Very clean, quick good service. Food is very tasty, on par with Wetherby Whaler. Highly recommend. Plenty of surrounding shops to browse.

Fantastic fish and chips. Chose to eat in Service was swift and effective. At the higher end of the scale in terms of price but quality has a price and it was impeccably clean.

Always been the best fish & chips anywhere lovely staff clean. As i come from Thirsk & still go to visit mum we have them often we take away because of mum mobility. Have eaten inside as well cant fault them look forward to going through even more if its Fri f&c day

Very nice fish and chips to take out - I've never sat in the restaurant. I like traditional soggy chips that you can't seem to get anywhere, however these are a very nice alternative

The staff here are always friendly and patient. The food is good. Upstairs in the cafe the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly and the food is also good. It's a pleasant place to visit

Just had some very dried up fish an chips takeaway Barely edible. Very disappointed and at over £9 definitely not worth it. This is the 2nd poor quality fish from here. Pity. Used to be ok.

Can’t fault their delicious fish and chips. Enjoyed our meal upstairs in the first floor restaurant. It was spotlessly clean , with great service. My elderly mum had a very generous senior citizens lunch option and the bill was less than £20 fir the two of us with drinks , perfect!

Very nice restaurant area for a 'fish and chip shop', the service was very pleasant and the fare was nice. It would be a great improvement if there had been a few alcoholic drinks on offer, as it was only tea coffee and soft drinks.

The cafe is located in the heart of Thirsk, near the World of James Herriot, in a cobbled market square. There is ample parking which is free after 1800 hrs. The restaurant had closed by the time we visited. However the chip and gravy supper take-away was really good. Chips were chunky and firm with light fluffy centers The beef gravy thick and gooey with a perfect stick to chip consistency, all served in a cardboard (eco friendly) box with lashings of salt and vinegar. Although a little on the expensive side (just) the quality was value for money. The other food items (fish, sausage etc) looked delicious. It should be noted that those with mobility issues may find access difficult due to the front steps.
