Service & food were excellent & staff very friendly. It was spotlessly clean. The portions were very large so excellent value for money. We will be back.

Lovely walk through the river side to find this pub, very kind and welcoming staff, alongside very cute dogs. I had a good experience and the food was nice. Very filling. I was not sure about the gravy as it was very strong, but that is prob because i am picky! great service and decent pricing.

Went in with a friend for a drink or two before wandering off for a meal elsewhere. Seemed alright at first, a few locals in the bar. I think the restaurant side had finished. We saw a guy stood at the bar give an old bloke sitting opposite a hard time over something. The old bloke was busy with his mobile and looked confused. The landlady didn't seem bothered or to care. Obviously one of the locals fancying being a 'hard man' - bullying an old bloke who seemed completely oblivious to any issue. Think that will be my last visit to this place.

Lovely warm and welcoming staff and pub. Dog friendly too. Decent portions of hot and tasty food. Good selection of food on the menu.

Went for a meal here with family. Warm and welcoming staff. Dog friendly so took our little pooch, who enjoyed being fussed over by everyone in the pub. Meals were very decent sized, and delicious 😋. Lovely pub, would def go again.

We had food here as there were not many places in Thirsk doing food where dogs were allowed. I had enchiladas and the wife had beef stew and we both thought it was excellent and there was loads of meat in both meals.

What a lovely place. Food was excellent. Good value for money and lovely staff. 5 mins walk from the market square and a lot quieter.

Smashing Sunday lunch at this picturesque pub in a quaint part of Thirsk (our second visit). They do normal or junior portions, first time we each had the normal one and it was enormous! Also I should add it was delicious. Latest visit we had the junior portion which was still a big plateful. Again, delicious. Both lunches were excellent value for money and the service very good. Can't praise the pub enough!

Went here on Saturday night while on a visit to Thirsk, found the place to be friendly and the choice of drinks varied. We saw they did meals and booked for Sunday dinner. It was fantastic, large portions and hot straight from the kitchen. The pub itself is very clean and worth a look if your visiting Thirsk for a couple of days.

Called in today for lunch, lovely friendly lady behind the bar , nice and clean pub ,food was amazing, lovely and hot and plenty of it and lots to choose from ,even cooked a sausage for the dog , good value for money, will definitely come back again 😋

Always a warm welcome from Tanya at the Nelson. Very friendly and the food is delicious, piping hot, home cooked dishes. Enjoyed many Sunday dinners here, along with evening meals. Highly recommend.

The Nelson is always amazing and have never had a bad meal. Went tonight for fish and chip Friday and oh wow! It was absolutely whale and chips! Beautifully cooked, amazing service and atmosphere! Love, love, loved it! Thank you so much Tanya and Bill x

Family owned , spit spot clean, real home cooked pub food end has jam poly poly for pud and large restaurant space for family parties and pre booked coaches.

Was recommended to call at lunchtime. It was Sunday so we had the roast. We both picked lamb but there was 4 choices. My husband had the normal lunch and I had the junior one. Lots of food on both. Gorgeous yorkies. We decided it was the best Sunday dinner we had had. When in Thirsk again will definitely go there again.

What a lovely "local" pub! Thirsk has older looking pubs with older features and busier, bustling pubs too, but the staff, food and quiet atmosphere suits us perfectly. Food was great, nicely priced and happy staff who made us feel very welcome. Popped in for drinks whenever we passed!!

The people at the bar are very kind, good at communicating and serve your dogs with a treat and a bowl of water as you arrive, the food tasted amazing and the adult portions are huge- they also have a good range of foods that children under 5 would also enjoy eating as well in the kiddys section. The puddings were a delight and also served huge portions. If you wanted a part of your food to take home since you are so full, if asked, they will give you some tinfoil to wrap it in. They are great with kids and are not arsey either. 10/10 would definitely recommend!

I am a regular visitor to Thirsk, for some reason this pub has passed me by. I have made two recent visits here and it is a real gem, wish I'd found it sooner. I've not eaten here but food is very popular, Sunday lunch especially. The meals look great, I will definitely try the food on my next visit. Its just off the beaten track in Thirsk, but we'll worth seeking out.

It took 12 months to get there but worth every penny it was one of the best meals we have had for years and hope to go back there very soon

A great pub, just far enough out of town for a short walk. The food was excellent and the hand pulled beer, well kept and served. There was a very good selection on the menu as well as specials, whoever came up with fried onions in curry sauce for the smothered burger needs a badge of achievement, excellent.

Went for the Sunday roast. It was enormous and beautifully cooked and well presented. Very reasonable too. One of our party ordered the junior meal, which I'd probably go for next time. All in all a fantastic meal. Would thoroughly recommend.

Such a warm welcome , lovely barmaid and the food was great. It's all homemade, not straight out the freezer like most pubs. Well done , we will be back.

Great atmosphere. Went for food and then moved into the bar for further drinks. Food was lovely. Tony had the burger which he enjoyed and I had mushroom omelette with a salad. Great for someone on keto. Dogs are welcome in the bar and there is a lovely resident dog, a big Rhodesian Ridge Back.

Partner did a Google search for somewhere to eat after visiting bird of prey centre. Very friendly owner. Lounge where we ate was lovely and cozy, great music play list on and our food was fantastic. Partner Lisa had hunters chicken and said it was lovely. I went for English combo and steak was cooked as I asked for and was lovely. Would highly recommend this cozy pub and don't forget to say hello to pub dog Dillon.

There is always a friendly reception. Good service, good food, great atmosphere too. Every pub should be like this.

Stayed a week in Thirsk and only found this diamond on our last day. Just 50 yards over Cod Beck bridge. Clean, well laid out and proper home cooked food. By far the best food and best pub in Thirsk. The lamb steaks fabulous. Nice tia maria coffee to round the night off

Beef stew with dumplings was delicious. Felt very relaxed in this pub. Our dogs were also relaxed. Evie even thought it was HER pub. It's not it belongs to big D.

What a lovely pub, been staying in Thirsk this week and have eaten here and been in for drinks , we were given a friendly welcome and food was absolutely delicious. The landlady remembered what we drank on our second visit which was a nice touch. Very dog friendly in the bar too which was great for our small dog Gus. Would highly recommend . 😀

Just a had a fantastic meal, we were looking at the menu when the barmaid noticed this and immediately asked the chef to stay back which I'm pleased to say he did , food was delicious and very reasonably priced highly recommend

We came upon The Lord Nelson, on St James Green, while walking the Past and Present walk around the beautiful town of Thirsk. The board outside advertised 'Sunday Lunch' and as it had started to rain, we went inside. What a find. The whole place had a relaxed atmosphere. No-one was rushing but service was prompt. We were able to relax with a drink while deciding, not only what to eat, but also how much to eat because every meal came in three sizes. Both meals were delivered promptly and enough time was left to sample it before we were asked if everything was satisfactory. This question was sincerely asked and a pause for our answer before asking specifically if we would like more gravy. The staff obviously valued each other and their customers, many of whom, not surprisingly, were regulars.

Food was great. Brilliant portion size. Friendly staff.

2nd Visit and the food was again excellent, staff very friendly and attentive and service was great ,definitely our favourite pub now when we travel up from Leeds to visit family

Lovely friendly staff and great food, they also do some really good guest ales. Food portions are large and great value.

Very poor all round. Dirty and very outdated. Poor service and low quality food. Dirty plates left out on every table, dirty glasses up and down the bar. Staff dont seem to care. Slow service in a grubby old outdated pub. Very over priced.

The food and drink were excellent and the friendliness and hospitality of the bar manager was top notch! Also the reasonable price and quantity of food was impressive.

Had a great meal here with family and friends I can not fault it very warm and friendly staff and service I will be back the next time I am down there !!!!!

We called in here after seeing it on our way in to Thirsk walking from South Kilvington, We were greeted by a very busy but very polite lady who welcomed us in and took our drinks order before showing us out to the beer garden where she delivered the drinks. The beer garden had lots of spaced out tables and whilst we were there we decided to stay for a spot of lunch. We both had a "light bite" from the menu which was a bacon and mushroom melt with chips and salad. The food arrived hot and was a very generous portion so something considered light. The home made chips make all the difference on these meals when most places now opt for frozen rubbish. We were both very satisfied when we were finished. We only left because we had booked a table at another pub otherwise I think we'd have ended up staying there most of the day. Now we know this little gem is there we'll definitely be going again next time we're down that way.

Visited with family after pre booking a table for 6, brilliant friendly service throughout from all staff and the Sunday lunch was fabulous all freshly cooked and with proper gravy! Great prices and other alternatives on the Sunday lunch menu for people who don't fancy the full roast we all had a lovely meal here and will be returning again in the near future and fully recommend it to anyone.

Greeted by a very friendly lady (unsure if the landlady) we both decided to go for the homemade Yorkshire pudding filled with roast beef served with mash, gravy and peas. You won't leave hungry, huge portion. All really tasty
