We called in here after seeing it on our way in to Thirsk walking from South Kilvington, We were greeted by a very busy but very polite lady who welcomed us in and took our drinks order before showing us out to the beer garden where she delivered the drinks. The beer garden had lots of spaced out tables and whilst we were there we decided to stay for a spot of lunch. We both had a "light bite" from the menu which was a bacon and mushroom melt with chips and salad. The food arrived hot and was a very generous portion so something considered light. The home made chips make all the difference on these meals when most places now opt for frozen rubbish. We were both very satisfied when we were finished. We only left because we had booked a table at another pub otherwise I think we'd have ended up staying there most of the day. Now we know this little gem is there we'll definitely be going again next time we're down that way.

Visited with family after pre booking a table for 6, brilliant friendly service throughout from all staff and the Sunday lunch was fabulous all freshly cooked and with proper gravy! Great prices and other alternatives on the Sunday lunch menu for people who don't fancy the full roast we all had a lovely meal here and will be returning again in the near future and fully recommend it to anyone.

We love this pub, its very homely and you are always made to feel very welcome. You are always greeted warmly by landlady Tanya who runs a spotless establishment. The food is very reasonably priced and is absolutely fabulous plus the portion sizes are huge. We have had most things on the menu and can honestly say each one is as tasty as the one before. My hubby adores the pork chops served here which are the largest We've ever seen in a pub. If you are visiting Thirsk, The Lord Nelson is definitely the place to eat!!

We found this pub as the result of a Google search looking for a dog friendly pub with good food which was showing the Liverpool game! We struck lucky and found a very welcoming local with delicious food who welcomed our Staffie. In the bar dogs are positively adored but the very nice restaurant is dog and football free. We enjoyed our meals very much, with the steak cooked to perfection and chicken beautiful. Portions were generous and fantastic value. We look forward to visiting again when next we're in the area.

Myself and my husband called into this lovely pub for Sunday when we were en route back home to Yorkshire after visiting family. I found it through a quick internet search, and it turned out to be a great find. We were given a very warm welcome, and the pub Ian nicely decorated and clean. I ordered a small Sunday beef roast and my husband had the standard Turkey roast. Both dinners were of ample portion size, and most importantly the quality and taste of the food was delicious. My beef was tender and tasty and the mashed potato and Yorkshire puddings were really nice. Excellent value for money and we throughly enjoyed our meals. Would return if we are ever around that way again.

Stopped here en route home after a camping holiday in North Yorkshire. It was Sunday lunchtime, and after 6 days of camping food, we really fancied a home cooked meal and so popped in here on spec. The man at the bar confirmed they could accommodate the two of us without a booking. My partner opted for a 'supersize' roast beef dinner and I a standard but when we got to the bar to order, we were asked if we were sure about the supersize as they are "huge"... so my partner confirmed he'd just go for a standard size. instead... although I could see the disappointment on his face!! We were sitting near the bar and heard the guy saying the same thing to everyone who asked for a supersize... no-one ended up ordering one. It made me wonder why they advertise them in the first place?Anyhow the dinner was delicious. I must say the huge pile of mashed potato looked intimidating at first but once I'd tried it and tasted the lovely smooth, creamy, buttery flavour, I knew I'd eat the lot! There were only two veg - carrots and broccoli - but both were cooked just how I like them - still with a little bit of a bite (not mushy with all the flavour cooked out like you get in some places!). The gravy was lovely as was the homemade Yorkshire pudding and the plentiful beef. We both polished off everything on our plates and my partner admitted that if there'd been any more on his plate, he'd have struggled. I guess the bar man was right after all!All in all I'd definitely recommend this place for a hearty Sunday lunch.

Having read reviews mentioning the Yorkshire puddings we each decided to try Yorkshires with Cumberland sausage. The sausage was fine, very tasty and cooked just right but the Yorkshires and mashed potato were very poor. The Yorkshires were hard and thin round the upright sides, flat in the middle and lacking flavour. The potato was also lacking flavour and was on the lumpy side. We mentioned these points to the lady at the bar when we paid and she said that the chef used butter in the mash but did not use any seasoning for either the mash or the Yorkshires. We were disappointed with our meals and both left sizeable portions on the plate. There was no suggestion of any reduction in price because of our disappointment, but neither did we ask for any.

Were made very welcome for a school reunion party. Had booked to stay for B&B. Almost wish we’d had longer to stay in the room! Large bedroom and en-suite in Rm 2, warm, bedside light, toiletries, fluffy towels, in addition to the usual tea and coffee making facilities there was a coffee machine too. Cooked breakfast was excellent.

We were at The Lord Nelson for a school reunion (60+ of us all 60 this year!) and decided the easiest option was to stay the night and that turned out to b an excellent decision. We stayed in Room 2 which was spacious and modern. We had a large double bed and a single, the bathroom was very roomy, and, much to our delight, there was a Dolce Gusto coffee machine which was very welcome the morning after! Breakfast was wonderful. We ordered our choices in the evening, and everything was delicious, with excellent sausages, bacon and black pudding. We’ll definitely be back in 2022 for the next reunion - if we last that long.

Fancied a Sunday lunch today so decided to try the Lord Nelson following good reviews on Facebook. Lovely traditional pub (never been in before), very warm welcome, great service and a fantastic lunch. Lots of choice (large filled Yorkshire puddings, burgers, pies, scampi etc as well as more traditional), generous portions, and fantastic value. To my mind, this is what people want in a Sunday lunch and the Lord Nelson doesn’t disappoint. Also good were the choice of smaller or larger portions and toddler portions, to suit all ages. And puddings for under £4 which is pretty much unheard of these days. Highly recommended, might need to book but we were lucky as we went relatively early. Highly recommended and will definitely be back.

Good traditional home cooked pub food with loads of the old favourites - steak pie and chips, mince and dumplings, curry, good Sunday roasts, traditional puddings etc with plenty of choice and mostly fresh to order. Can take a little while to get served but that is because the food is prepared to order and so worth the wait, and good value with many main courses under a tenner. Good well kept beer and a selection of guest ales. Lovely beer garden for sitting out in at summer. Probably the best Inn in Thirsk for pub food.

On our way bac home from Northallerton we happened on The Lord Nelson, a small pub on the outskirts of the town centre. We were warmly welcomed by the Landlady and ordered lunch.I had Mince Beef with herb dumplings served with mashed potato and peas and my wife had one of the vegetarian options, mixed vegetables in a tomato sauce with pasts. There was a short wait as these were freshly cooked. Both dishes were very generous portions, were very well cooked and had an very good flavour. The mince included vegetables and an excellent thick gravy. The vegetable pasta had a very nice chilli kick to it.The service was polite and friendly and all the food was piping hot.For a very reasonably priced and delicious Pub meal I definitely recommend The Lord Nelson. We were on a visit to Thirsk for several days and I insisted to the wife that we go to the Lord Nelson for sunday lunch. We had been before a good while ago and it was excellent then. It hasn't changed, it's still excellent. I opted for the supersize lunch OMG, be warned make sure your exceptionally hungry if you go for this one. The beef simply melted in your mouth and was truly the tastiest roast beef I've ever tasted, the veggies were cooked to perfection, not overcooked mush like in some places and what can I say about the yorkie that can with it, it would have served 10.To top it all a decent pint of ale and really good staff. Cannot wait to be in Thirsk again on a Sunday. Give it a go don't just take my word for it.

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Thirsk with our caravan. A few weeks ago we were staying and decided to visit a few pubs on a Sunday afternoon, this being one on the agenda. We had already planned our meal for this day but took notice of the lunches that were being served. They looked absolutely delicious. We spoke to a couple sat near us who were local to the area and they said that they would go nowhere else for Sunday lunch, that made our mind up that the next time we were in Thirsk on a Sunday we would eat here, were so pleased we made this decision. We went there on the 23rd, ordered lunch which we had no issues with the time to be served our meal which was piping hot. My god what a delight, absolutely delicious, fantastic portion size, everything fresh and not pre-packed or microwaved.I would say this is the best Sunday lunch I have ever eaten in a pub/restaurant. A bonus was also the pub had an ale on which is all I drink. We noticed that the pub was mainly locals which to me speaks volumes. The choice of roasts was excellent as well and unusually offered lamb as well as all the usual, beef, pork and chicken. This is a no nonsense pub, decor a little dated, but clean and really excellent food. It is worth the 3 minute walk out of the market place to find it.We will never eat Sunday lunch anywhere in town from now on.

Having enjoyed some good meals here I was very disappointed to find standards have more than slipped....badly. Hubby & I had been looking forward to our return meal but were served not the lovely home cooked meals as previously, but what seemed cheap frozen fare. Hubby said his 'scampi' tasted odd and he questioned the quality deciding it was along the lines of a packet for a pound buy. I had a burger which was nice, but the chips with both meals were undercooked and the coleslaw that came with the burger was horrid. Cheap and nasty value style, the girl serving was the regular and she was lovely as ever so we pondered if the chef had changed or if they were cutting corners for financial reasons. Upshot is the food quality has dropped so drastically we won't go back. Such a shame.

Visited the Lord Nelson for the first time in years recently for a Sunday lunch. It's safe to say the decor has not changed one bit in this time - think dark patterned carpets & terracotta woodchip walls. There were 4 size options for a Sunday lunch - toddler, small, normal & mega. Liked the fact they catered for toddler sized meals, as most 'child' portions outface a toddler.Opted for a normal size lunch & it was plenty big enough. Huge home made Yorkshire pud, roasts potatoes & masses of meat. Only 2 vegs though which was disappointing (one HUGE sprig of broccoli & 3 of the biggest carrot sticks I've ever seen!) Kids meal was supposed to include a drink & icecream which we were never offered. Cheesy 90's pop cd playing in repeat in the background didnt do much for the atmosphere. Food was average (but you get what you pay for I believe), surroundings average, service uninterested & minimal. Won't rush back any time soon unfortunately.
