Grab a beer and take a seat outside of beautiful Dartington Hall after walking around the gardens! There's an outside stall serving beer and barbeque meals (tofu option available for vegetarians), but you have to order inside to access the full menu.

Food was delicious, although very expensive. Timing was awful, I had finished my main course before some of the others even had their meals brought out. Portions were small, so needed to add extra sides which increased the prices even more. Considering when we arrived there were very few other people there and was a Monday evening, shocking service. It did get busier later, but no excuse for earlier slow service.

Was here at Dartington Hall for a 3 day festival, and as using the dartington accomodation was entitled to 10% off food and drink,or so I thought but it really depended on who served you or what day it was or what time it was .Lack of clarity was rather annoying and could change within hours for no obvious reason.Staff blamed festival organisers. Festival blamed pub. Staff were by and large friendly but as all inside tables were set for food you were unable to sit inside if you were just having drinks.Consquently you had to sit outside even in bad weather.Made no sense as would have perhaps eaten if allowed to have drinks inside.Oddly plenty of empty tables inside set up for food so again confusing as to why. The new chef was highly spoken of by staff and had recommended meals to us but the 10% confusion left a bad feeling so we ended up eating elsewhere.I think they missed some business by many due to this.

Whilst we had friends staying at the hall, we thought we’d try the restaurant/pub for a meal. The reviews weren’t great, but we thought give it a try, utter disaster. Firstly they couldn’t find the booking we had made, then stuck us by a door which no one in and out ever shut, a large noisy family group of 20 or more beside us, I wanted to leave then, but was outvoted. Two of us had sea bass with seasonal vegetables, which turned out to kale on the plate, and a bowl of kale to share, brilliant planning, kale and kale, on requesting something different, we were told that’s all there was, KALE. Our friends had lamb, which was tough and chewy, and just came with potatoes? Sorry but at £20 a head was absolutely unacceptable, and I’m afraid we’ll never eat there again.

Sadly the advertised lunch menu on line was not available, only a limited snack menu. This wasn’t explained on booking and so it was a wasted trip, and parking expense with my elderly parents. Had to find somewhere else for something to eat. Very disappointing.

Well, what can I say? 11 quid for 3 flakes, and I mean flakes of salmon in a bowl with half a salad bag and a drop of balsamic. Hugely depressing. I should have taken heed of the reviews. Sandwiches stodgy, chips gave us all indigestion. Stuck in a dark corner.Very little choice, huge...no, enormous profit mark up. Nice, friendly staff and good service, but terrible food. We wanted a pub experience for visiting family from abroad with small children. The White Hart and the Gardens have a wonderful situation and the children can run around whilst being served outside on tables in the evening sun. However, the meals arrived some with meat and a fish option with roast spuds, Yorkshire pud and veg which tasted like they’d just been reheated from the lunchtime session. Not good, so perhaps it’s just a matter of going for lunch and not later in the day. A little fresher please!!

Looks great on a nice sunny day, but we were duped into paying high prices for truly awful sandwiches at lunchtime. Cheap supermarket bread and salad leaves, nothing like the description on the menu. We enjoyed a lovely meal before going to see Wonderglow. The weather outside wasn't great, but this place is warm and welcoming in a beautiful location. The food was tasty and delish with a good selection, but the service was a little slow. The belly pork and halloumi were stand out. The chilli sauce that came with the halloumi tasted homemade and had a nice heat and whilst the sweet sauce in the belly pork starter could have been too much on its own, with the meat or some bread it was very moreish. The burger was filling on a lovely roll, but maybe a little too much chutney. Looking forward to going back in the summer and enjoying a meal and a walk on a summers day.

I like the way they use so many local suppliers. The staff were young but superb. Nothing was too much trouble for them. My only criticism were the barking dogs we had to endure. We travelled from liverpool to see my son and his family staying at the hall which was lovely. We booked the White Hart as a treat for 8 of us. We arrived first and bought ourselves a drink, the rest of the guests followed and no drinks were offered at the table until we eventually managed to gain the attention of the chatty (between themselves) staff. We ordered our food ,some of the meals arrived and the rest followed at least 20 minutes later, causing the people who had their meals to start eating to avoid them going cold. Three of us had the fish pie and found it inedible due to the high vinegar content. 4 had the chicken supreme with garlic potato and the potato was inedible due to the ridiculously high garlic content. We mentioned to the server who went to see the chef and then came out to see if we wanted to reorder which we obviously didn't. We got a mumbled apology from our server. After emailing the manager we have been offered a free round of drinks on return but I nor any of my party wont be visiting again and it really spoilt what should have been a lovely family gathering

The staff were friendly courteous and attentive so 5* for them but generally the place seemed to be understaffed. Having ordered our food we had to call a waiter over to say we had been waiting for 40 minutes for our food. After another 5 or so minutes our food was brought to us and although the quality couldn't be faulted all of it was lukewarm and the cauliflower cheese was actually cold. ( After pointing this out we were offered a fresh portion but turned down the offer as it would probably have arrived after so had finished everything else.) We suspected that the posted goid had been standing in thr kitchens for some time forgotten about. In order to avoid this sort of situation arising again I feel more staff need to be employed.

Food itself very average - despite selecting from specials board. Chef explained weird pale sausages as steamed then grilled. Waiter apologetic, waitress attempted to deliver wrong food to table & got the drinks order wrong. Venue in the main bar area was cold despite sitting next to the only lukewarm radiator. When our food arrived the order was wrong so returned 1 dish, but both meals left alot to be desired. There was a lack of organisation and what looked like a lack of management. 2 glasses of wine we ordered given free did not compensate the poor experience, could not blame the staff, they were left to get on with it. And in the beginning to have to pay £6 to park my car in a potholed, hardcore car park, The whole set up at the estate needs attention. Its a good job we enjoyed the film at The Barn,at least it was warm. I now await a lack of response from any sort of management at this venue

The food and atmosphere were surprisingly mediocre for a setting as magnificent as Dartington. It’s difficult to rate the service. Two of the three staff members we met were friendly and conscientious.I’d give them 5 stars. Our principle server however, was on the arrogant side. In spite of that, I decided to leave a good tip. He then approached me at the bar when I was paying the tab and said “cash tips are preferred”. I explained that we are from out of the country and didn’t have any British cash. It was an awkward ending when we were trying to be generous after a forgettable meal. My advice, dear readers, is to consider the negative reviews. Until I moved from the area 14 years ago, I was a regular visitor to Dartington. Films, festivals, recitals and just sunny afternoons out. And of course, these were always accompanied by visits to the bar and to the restaurant. I was excited to be returning after such a long time to enjoy a Sunday lunch on a sunny day in September. Oh dear! First we were hit by a charge to park our car in the virtually empty car park £1.50 an hour. No mention of that on the website. Then the pub itself, that has all changed around. The cosy little bar has gone, and what was once a magnificent dining hall is now the Bar cum Dining Hall, a rather austere place to have a quiet drink, but a rather public place to have an intimate lunch or supper and the warning signs were there, of the ten tables set for dining. Only one, my booking, was used in the time that we were there, which was between 1 pm and 3 pm on a Sunday. The Food. My partner and I both ordered the roast topside of beef. When it came there was an instant visual disappointment. The “Yorkshire pudding“ was, in fact, a rather fat and floppy fried pancake with slightly greasy crispy edges. It was draped over two boiled potatoes and some slices of roast beef. Accompanying the plated food was a rather nice broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce, and some rather undercooked carrots and cabbage. The beef itself was quite tasty, but chewy at times. Service throughout was mediocre, borderline rude at times. It certainly didn’t leave a good impression. We were very disappointed with our meal, the ambience and the parking charges. I will not be returning. (note to chef try using plain flour in your Yorkies).

It makes me really sad to leave this review but I think really its the only way to express my family's sheer disappointment at the service that we received on Tuesday evening. We have been to the White Hart many times over the years and it's a family favourite for us, great food and a lovely location in both the summer and winter. On Tuesday we took the children to the cinema and had planned to stop at the White Hart for an evening meal afterwards. When we arrived there was only one table that could accommodate our parties size but the was an employee laying across the bench seat looking at his phone!? Not a great start and certainly not the first impression I would be happy with my staff giving. My wife asked him if he was using the tables but he just ignored her so I then asked again (politely) "Excuse me, are you using these tables?" he just shrugged and looked back at his phone!! I couldn't quite believe it. I said to him this is the only table big enough for us to sit at, is that OK and he agin just looked back at his phone. I told him it was very rude to ignore customers but he didn't seem to care at all. We went to the bar to see if there was somewhere else to sit and we weren't going to say anything but then decided no, we should because if it was our business we would want tot know. We explained top the barman what had happened and he went to investigate only to come back and say "yeah, sorry about that..we arnt serving food now anyway" Unbelievable!! I called in on Wednesday and explained what had happened and was told that it was unacceptable and that the manager would be in touch within a few mins but nobody called me back. Overall, as a long standing customer we feel very disappointed

A 14th-century pub in the grounds of Dartington Hall. They offer an extensive choice of drinks and a small but varied food menu. The food itself is top end pub grub and very reasonably priced. My only gripe is the speed of service. I dined there three successive nights and, on each occasion, had to wait between thirty and forty minutes for the food to arrive at a time when the pub wasn't particularly busy. This was a shame as everything else was pretty good.

You know when, as a customer, you feel like *you* are giving good customer service because the staff aren't? All big smiles, nods and every politeness you can muster in the hope that they reciprocate, if even just a little... Specifically I'm talking about the breakfast team who appeared to be less thrilled to be awake and at work as I was. One female staff member in particular made it pretty clear she was doing me a favour by taking my room number. Didn't point me in the direction of the food, didn't ask if I needed anything, just turned around. Anyway, that can be overlooked. Or maybe it's part of the charm. The breakfast was surprisingly good... The sausages were excellent and the mushrooms were an unexpected delight. The eggs were overdone and the bacon sweaty and flaccid, however. The coffee is served in a large urn, and was rather burnt and bitter both mornings I was there. The evening bar staff were a different story, chatty and personable and the range of beers excellent. The space itself is impressive. They've turned the structure into something resembling hogwarts canteen. You can, and should, take your breakfast outside onto the lawn to get a full appreciation of the architecture.

Really liked the menu and my table of 4 had 4 different dishes whch we all enjoyed. The restaurant is not hot and on a cool night, the draft from the outer door was challenging. Service was OK but it felt like the team needed...

It could have been a lovely evening in this place while we were on holiday in South Devon. The place is very picturesque and so romantic but the story changes when it comes to service and hygiene. The staff need to have more training in hospitality industry and food hygiene.

Having visited in person a few days ago to select a suitable table, it was frankly very annoying to be placed elsewhere when we arrived at lunchtime today. It was my very elderly mother's birthday, and the window seat my wife chose would have been...

I would normally give this place a five but on this occasion our table placement for dinner wasn't great. We were a couple out for a quiet dinner and even though there were other tables around the corner, they chose to sit us next to a couple with 2 very young, tired, children who were there until about 10 o'clock - running around and being quite noisy. I know that makes me sound miserable, parents and children are definitely allowed out to dine - I am a parent myself. However, the staff could have made it ok for everyone to have a pleasant evening if they had thought about it and just put us around the corner. I know we cd have asked - but I wasn't up for making the parents feel bad either. The staff are great, but a bit more thought wd have been good.

The food was nice but there wasn’t enough of it, in our opinion…but unfortunately we did leave feeling hungry. Even after two course but what we had was tasty. The drinks did take a long time to come too, we were waiting for well over half and hour, which was disappointing. The staff were nice as was the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Very disappointing experience. We were sat on a table near the door, despite asking to be moved, so every time diners came in and out, we were cold. We had bread with a selection of butters to start with, which was so tough, it was difficult to eat, especially with hard butter! For the main, my husband had sirloin steak with chips, which was fine, however my corn fed chicken breast was not cooked through and was pink in the middle. The waitress agreed and a replacement was brought out, but not until my husband had finished his main. The side of vegetables I had originally ordered with the chicken had by now gone cold and no replacement was brought out. All in all very disappointing and we will not be returning.

Totally faultless, we were here celebrating my wifes birthday and new years eve, the food was utterly wonderful, service was with a smile, and i must thank the young lady that served us im sure she would much rather have been out celebrating new years eve but her level of service was second to none. Highly recommend you give this a try.

The food was great as always and the service was also ok with the exception of the drinks and bar. The Prosecco arrived as we were finishing our starters and the wine did not arrive as they apparently didn’t have the one that we ordered but again we found this out as we were finishing our mains. We then went for cocktails and the tables and bar was really dirty some tables were full of teapots and breakfast menus at 21:00 and most were really sticky. There was also what looked like toilet toll on the floor. The cocktail menu is now much shorter and the Bellini had hardly any peach pulp. We won’t go back for cocktails until they sort the bar out and we’re really disappointed.

Very good food and service but didn't realise on booking through Open Table that would not be able to access festive menu! Needed to booked directly with restaurant so somewhat disappointed. Lunchtime menu is a little limited on choice!

Not a bad place, but in my opinion it's way overpriced. £14 for 2 small scallops is ridiculous, they didn't actually smell too fresh either. I know it's A la Carte, but in all honesty I was still hungry after 4 courses. It made a nice change but would not go again. Waiter was friendly and I would say he was an asset.

The waiters forgot one or 2 requests for mustard, etc. Noise levels were good until a very rowdy party came in, otherwise an excellent evening out. Shame no Christmas menu, but we enjoyed what we had anyway.

Haven't been here for about a year. Understand why now. Fish was overcooked with soggy batter so probably cooked some time ago. Chips were lukewarm & soggy. Paid £19.40. I can buy 3 course meal plus
