No veggie/Vegan option for the Sunday lunch. Had the risotto ( only option) which looked and tasted like an after thought with very little care or flavour put into it and at the same price as the roast myself and the other veggie felt we had to return the dish and try find something to eat near by as the rest of our family ate without us. The waitress was great and very understanding.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon for a roast dinner. The food was fantastic, the beef was perfectly cooked and so tender. The plate of food was so generous!! Cauliflower cheese a highlight - delicious! We were served by Daisy who was friendly and attentive.

My daughter has used this venue regularly and recommended it. Today we went for a family roast. In our party there were two vegetarians - we assumed that there would be a veggie roast option, much to our disappointment there was not. We were offered a mushroom risotto. The meat roasts were by all accounts excellent and we couldn’t fault the staff or service. However, the risotto was tasteless and bland. Our vegetarians had to return their food and remain hungry whilst the others enjoyed their feasts. We would really like to come back and hope that a Vegetarian option can be added - risotto felt like an after thought! We regularly go out for roasts and this first place that hasn’t been able to offer a veggie option.

A very poor lunchtime experience for 4 today. Sadly the worst fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. Very thick overcooked batter on tiny overcooked skin on fish. As a local I know what decent battered fish is like and this was miles away. I complained and didn’t have to pay for the coffees….brilliant! Won’t be going back..rather said as I love this place.

Fantastic Sunday roast dinner at the White Hart, Dartington Hall - we had the beef, which looked amazing and was really tasty, too. Excellent service, especially as we hadn't booked. We were seated and served quickly, and well looked after. Definitely five stars for me.

We booked on line for a table for 4 on Sunday. Unfortunately when we arrived the booking had not been recorded, but they did manage to find us a table (it was 1430 so it was toward the end of their service.) We sat down and then waited for ages. Eventually we were asked what drinks we would like and having ordered we waited patiently for their arrival. About 20 minutes later they came. Our food order was then taken. We had wanted the roast lamb but were told by the waiter that they had removed it from the menu due to several complaints about it being stringy, not a good start! 3 of our group went for the beef and one the pork. Again, after a very long wait, the food arrived. Beef was extremely thinly cut, and despite that very tough and chewy, we could have done with steak knives to cut it! The very small portion of vegetables (enough for 2) were cold, the carrots and celery were very undercooked whilst the cauliflower cheese was virtually set and congealed. The meal was lukewarm and not worth £21 each! This is undoubtedly the worse meal we have ever eaten out. The staff however were very friendly and apologetic but this could not make up for such poor quality food.

Set in a beautiful building with vaulted ceiling. Not a pub venue in the traditional sence. It was a Sunday lunch period but we simply stopped for coffee and delicious cakes. Service slow; dither and delay. Done it. Been there. Got the tee shirt. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

I rarely leave bad reviews but in this occasion I feel it is a service to anyone reading this. We took our 100 year old now for Sunday lunch and the food was TERRIBLE. Cold, clearly cooked hours before and embarrassing to be asked to pay for it. We asked for some plain veg, any veg, as she is limited in what she can eat - and were told it’s all prepared before - don’t you have a kitchen??? Or chef?? Or anyone??? The only reason we didn’t complain is it would have upset her so much - what you can look forward to is literally cold food, hard potatoes, runny gravy, burned sides - just awful. We had to ask for 4 wine choices as they were ‘changing the offering’ - I fee very strongly about this as previous reviews repeat what I’m saying - and as they don’t care enough to address their issues I’m leaving a review to encourage them - it was a disgrace - avoid avoid avoid

Absolutely beautiful setting & a lovely building. There is indoor & outdoor seating. Hadn't eaten here for several years but had high hopes now that Charlotte Vincent, formerly of the Five Bells, had taken over as head chef. We'd eaten her food before & it was very good. We had lunch - the menu consisted of small plates only. We had Roast Chicken sandwiches & Buttermilk Fried Chicken between the 3 of us, with chips. The fried chicken with spiraccha mayo was good. Our chicken sarnies were disappointing. The foccacia bread was thick enough but then whole, uncut chicken breasts & salad were piled inside raising the sandwiches to an impractical eating depth. You had to dismantle them to eat & the bread was also too spongy & on the dry side. The chicken was however cooked nicely & well seasoned. The chips were crispy & not too oily. My favourite part of our lunch here though were the Lattes - just one shot of coffee was very flavoursome.

This was a quirky experience which could easily be improved on with a little attention to detail, perhaps. Firstly, the menu interpretation was difficult - it was impossible to get our order right. For example, the "mains" list apparently all came with trimmings so we were looking forward to roast potatoes and Yorkshires to go with the veggie option but they didn't arrive - staff referring to the menu saying trimmings are served with "roasts" only. Other non-veggie mains did not mention "roast" but we're served with trimmings. This was not clear at all and was a disappointing start. The "key" for interpreting dietary requirements did not match the codes against the meals (eg Ve and * were not listed - Vn was a guess but no *). The chosen GF dessert it turns out was made by a new chef and they were unsure whether GF oats were used. This meant the GF member of our party sadly went without a dessert while it would have been simple to offer a custom dish eg an ice cream scoop. The Plum crumble with custard arrived with ice cream instead - without explanation. In this time of dangerous dietary food allergies it is really important for a menu to accurately reflect the meal's content. Another disappointment was that none of the ladies' loos had loo paper and this needed to be (embarrassingly) pointed out to staff. However, let me just say clearly that the food served was great, the serving staff were very friendly & helpful and the dining hall was lovely. As I say, getting the menu right and to loos stocked could have helped make this a 5 star experience. - Mike

As a vegan who wishes to follow Prof Tim Spector’s example( Zoe project) of just having meat once a month I have tried unsuccessfully to find a sustainable meat dish locally. So I was delighted to see venison on the menu (sustainable because of urgent need to cull environment damaging deer). Even more thrilled that it was delicious! In addition Exmouth mussels , also low environmental impact, were also on offer;.. so next time ! If we are going to address the climate , biodiversity crises and improve human health and animal welfare eateries must act a lot more responsibly in offering sustainable menus. So well done White Hart.

Food was delicious, although very expensive. Timing was awful, I had finished my main course before some of the others even had their meals brought out. It did get busier later, but no excuse for earlier slow service.

Was here at Dartington Hall for a 3 day festival, and as using the dartington accomodation was entitled to 10% off food and drink,or so I thought but it really depended on who served you or what day it was or what time it was .Lack of clarity was rather annoying and could change within hours for no obvious reason.Staff blamed festival organisers. Festival blamed pub. Staff were by and large friendly but as all inside tables were set for food you were unable to sit inside if you were just having drinks.Consquently you had to sit outside even in bad weather.Made no sense as would have perhaps eaten if allowed to have drinks inside.Oddly plenty of empty tables inside set up for food so again confusing as to why. The new chef was highly spoken of by staff and had recommended meals to us but the 10% confusion left a bad feeling so we ended up eating elsewhere.I think they missed some business by many due to this.

Whilst we had friends staying at the hall, we thought we’d try the restaurant/pub for a meal. The reviews weren’t great, but we thought give it a try, utter disaster. Firstly they couldn’t find the booking we had made, then stuck us by a door which no one in and out ever shut, a large noisy family group of 20 or more beside us, I wanted to leave then, but was outvoted. Two of us had sea bass with seasonal vegetables, which turned out to kale on the plate, and a bowl of kale to share, brilliant planning, kale and kale, on requesting something different, we were told that’s all there was, KALE. Our friends had lamb, which was tough and chewy, and just came with potatoes? Sorry but at £20 a head was absolutely unacceptable, and I’m afraid we’ll never eat there again.

We wanted a pub experience for visiting family from abroad with small children. The White Hart and the Gardens have a wonderful situation and the children can run around whilst being served outside on tables in the evening sun. However, the meals arrived some with meat and a fish option with roast spuds, Yorkshire pud and veg which tasted like they’d just been reheated from the lunchtime session. Not good, so perhaps it’s just a matter of going for lunch and not later in the day. A little fresher please!!

We enjoyed a lovely meal before going to see Wonderglow. The weather outside wasn't great, but this place is warm and welcoming in a beautiful location. The food was tasty and delish with a good selection, but the service was a little slow. The belly pork and halloumi were stand out. The chilli sauce that came with the halloumi tasted homemade and had a nice heat and whilst the sweet sauce in the belly pork starter could have been too much on its own, with the meat or some bread it was very moreish. The burger was filling on a lovely roll, but maybe a little too much chutney. Looking forward to going back in the summer and enjoying a meal and a walk on a summers day.

We travelled from liverpool to see my son and his family staying at the hall which was lovely. We booked the White Hart as a treat for 8 of us. We arrived first and bought ourselves a drink, the rest of the guests followed and no drinks were offered at the table until we eventually managed to gain the attention of the chatty (between themselves) staff. We ordered our food ,some of the meals arrived and the rest followed at least 20 minutes later, causing the people who had their meals to start eating to avoid them going cold. Three of us had the fish pie and found it inedible due to the high vinegar content. 4 had the chicken supreme with garlic potato and the potato was inedible due to the ridiculously high garlic content. We mentioned to the server who went to see the chef and then came out to see if we wanted to reorder which we obviously didn't. We got a mumbled apology from our server. After emailing the manager we have been offered a free round of drinks on return but I nor any of my party wont be visiting again and it really spoilt what should have been a lovely family gathering

After another 5 or so minutes our food was brought to us and although the quality couldn't be faulted all of it was lukewarm and the cauliflower cheese was actually cold. ( After pointing this out we were offered a fresh portion but turned down the offer as it would probably have arrived after so had finished everything else.) We suspected that the posted goid had been standing in thr kitchens for some time forgotten about. In order to avoid this sort of situation arising again I feel more staff need to be employed.

There was a lack of organisation and what looked like a lack of management. 2 glasses of wine we ordered given free did not compensate the poor experience, could not blame the staff, they were left to get on with it. And in the beginning to have to pay £6 to park my car in a potholed, hardcore car park, The whole set up at the estate needs attention. Until I moved from the area 14 years ago, I was a regular visitor to Dartington. Films, festivals, recitals and just sunny afternoons out. And of course, these were always accompanied by visits to the bar and to the restaurant. I was excited to be returning after such a long time to enjoy a Sunday lunch on a sunny day in September. Oh dear! First we were hit by a charge to park our car in the virtually empty car park £1.50 an hour. No mention of that on the website. Then the pub itself, that has all changed around. The cosy little bar has gone, and what was once a magnificent dining hall is now the Bar cum Dining Hall, a rather austere place to have a quiet drink, but a rather public place to have an intimate lunch or supper and the warning signs were there, of the ten tables set for dining. Only one, my booking, was used in the time that we were there, which was between 1 pm and 3 pm on a Sunday. The Food. My partner and I both ordered the roast topside of beef. When it came there was an instant visual disappointment. The “Yorkshire pudding“ was, in fact, a rather fat and floppy fried pancake with slightly greasy crispy edges. It was draped over two boiled potatoes and some slices of roast beef. Accompanying the plated food was a rather nice broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce, and some rather undercooked carrots and cabbage. The beef itself was quite tasty, but chewy at times. Service throughout was mediocre, borderline rude at times. It certainly didn’t leave a good impression. We were very disappointed with our meal, the ambience and the parking charges. I will not be returning. (note to chef try using plain flour in your Yorkies).

Went to a concert at the Summer School, decided to round off the evening with a small glass of wine. I get it served in a PLASTIC beaker. First off I thought Dartington were conscious about green issues - maybe it was some kind of d degradable plastic I don’t know. However I paid £5 for the wine, and drinking it out of a plastic breaker did put a damper on the occasion, I guess it cuts down on washing up for the staff.

It makes me really sad to leave this review but I think really its the only way to express my family's sheer disappointment at the service that we received on Tuesday evening. We have been to the White Hart many times over the years and it's a family favourite for us, great food and a lovely location in both the summer and winter. On Tuesday we took the children to the cinema and had planned to stop at the White Hart for an evening meal afterwards. When we arrived there was only one table that could accommodate our parties size but the was an employee laying across the bench seat looking at his phone!? Not a great start and certainly not the first impression I would be happy with my staff giving. My wife asked him if he was using the tables but he just ignored her so I then asked again (politely) "Excuse me, are you using these tables?" he just shrugged and looked back at his phone!! I couldn't quite believe it. I said to him this is the only table big enough for us to sit at, is that OK and he agin just looked back at his phone. I told him it was very rude to ignore customers but he didn't seem to care at all. We went to the bar to see if there was somewhere else to sit and we weren't going to say anything but then decided no, we should because if it was our business we would want tot know. We explained top the barman what had happened and he went to investigate only to come back and say "yeah, sorry about that..we arnt serving food now anyway" Unbelievable!! I called in on Wednesday and explained what had happened and was told that it was unacceptable and that the manager would be in touch within a few mins but nobody called me back. Overall, as a long standing customer we feel very disappointed

A 14th-century pub in the grounds of Dartington Hall. They offer an extensive choice of drinks and a small but varied food menu. The food itself is top end pub grub and very reasonably priced. My only gripe is the speed of service. I dined there three successive nights and, on each occasion, had to wait between thirty and forty minutes for the food to arrive at a time when the pub wasn't particularly busy. This was a shame as everything else was pretty good.

Nice place, sitting outside on a sunny evening was lovely, but all they had to eat was cheesy chips, that were actually quite nice.

This place is great! Not sure what some of the reviews are about. Lovely Sunday Roast, friendly service, good draught cider, DJ playing music outside. I found it very relaxing after a day of travel.

Delicious food and drink. Breakfast was spot on. Disappointed by the poor attitude and organisation in the evening. First attempt we were told it was over an hour wait but it really felt like we were an inconvenience; we waited and it was only about 30 minutes. Second time they weren't serving food as there was an event - when staying at the hotel it would have been useful to know this. Both times - unhelpful staff who treated us more like an inconvenience than customers. Would highly recommend The Sea Trout in Staverton (about an 8 minute drive) instead.

You know when, as a customer, you feel like *you* are giving good customer service because the staff aren't? All big smiles, nods and every politeness you can muster in the hope that they reciprocate, if even just a little... Specifically I'm talking about the breakfast team who appeared to be less thrilled to be awake and at work as I was. One female staff member in particular made it pretty clear she was doing me a favour by taking my room number. Didn't point me in the direction of the food, didn't ask if I needed anything, just turned around. Anyway, that can be overlooked. Or maybe it's part of the charm. The breakfast was surprisingly good... The sausages were excellent and the mushrooms were an unexpected delight. The eggs were overdone and the bacon sweaty and flaccid, however. The coffee is served in a large urn, and was rather burnt and bitter both mornings I was there. The evening bar staff were a different story, chatty and personable and the range of beers excellent. The space itself is impressive. They've turned the structure into something resembling hogwarts canteen. You can, and should, take your breakfast outside onto the lawn to get a full appreciation of the architecture.

Fantastic food in a beautiful historic building. Youthful and attentive service. Even had a swallow flying round inside the high ceilinged bar and restaurant area at breakfast having snuck inside via an open door. Free entertainment too, what more could you ask for.

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others

Arrived in Dartmouth after a 10hour delay on M5 due to serious incident. Unhitched on Caravan site and went in search of food that was still open. Front of house staff very welcoming and pleasant after a horrendous journey. Takeout food prepared very quickly. Good price and very hot/tasty. Just what we needed!!
