Whitby's in Doncaster

First review here and it was very good. Located in the old fire station (expected to see old photos of it in the restaurant, but none) and in prime position for the Race Course directly opposite. The establishment is clean and airy and the staff pleasant althoughwe did have a bit of a mix up with the bill. Unfortunately there is no WiFi which was inconvenient as we had 2 small children who usually play on their tablets while we wait for meals to arrive. Drinks are a tad pricey, but considering its location wasn't suprised. Meals were great quality and plentiful. The fish was beautifully fresh and tasty. Bueno, ¿qué puedo decir? Este era un lugar absolutamente fabuloso para venir y comer. Desde el momento en que mi colega y yo entramos en el restaurante hasta el momento en que nos fuimos, todo el equipo era cálido, profesional y atractivo. Obviamente están trabajando en un lugar que disfrutan, y se apoyan unos a otros magníficamente. Además de eso, la comida era simplemente divina. Entre nosotros teníamos el bacalao enharinado y el eglefino rebozado. Ambos eran bellamente filetes blancos fritos suave y delicadamente con papas fritas que eran celestiales. Otra sorpresa (y rara en Inglaterra) fue el sutil vinagre afilado y la picante de los guisantes, que no eran simplemente puré, sino que todavía tenían un poco de mordisco en ellos. Los precios son muy buenos, especialmente dada la altísima calidad de la comida. Si estás en la ciudad por trabajo o simplemente de visita para las carreras, no puedes equivocarte con una parada aquí... ¡no te arrepentirás!

Este lugar solía ser de primera clase, pero realmente ha bajado colina abajo. Llamamos hoy y pedimos bacalao, patatas fritas y pasteles y el pastel de pescado. También pedimos té de limón y una coca-cola, las bebidas llegaron pero trajeron agua de limón, mi esposa estaba bien con ella y después de unos 5 minutos la camarera que tomó nuestro pedido notó que era la bebida incorrecta. Ella preguntó si queríamos que cambiara, pero optamos por no hacerlo. La comida llegó, el bacalao con patatas fritas estaba bien, pero solo promedio, no tan bueno como solía ser. El pastel de pescado era terrible, era como uno congelado de Islandia. El pescado estaba demasiado cocido y duro, mi esposa no podía cortarlo. Parte del puré de papas estaba duro, también estaba muy seco, por favor vea las fotos. No pudimos llamar la atención de nadie, ya que todos parecen estar hablando entre sí. Cuando vinieron a limpiar los platos preguntaron si todo estaba bien, ya que mi esposa había dejado la mitad de la tarta de pescado, ella les dijo que el pescado estaba demasiado cocido, que se puede ver claramente, pero todo lo que hicieron fue disculparse. Cuando fuimos a pagar intentaron cobrarnos £ 2. 85 para el té de limón, mi esposa les dijo y ellos enmendaron el proyecto de ley ya que el agua de limón era de £ 0. 70 , una diferencia de £ 2 . 15 . Deberían haber enmendado el proyecto de ley, ya que reconocieron que era la bebida equivocada, pero no hicieron nada para corregirlo. Nos encantaba ir a este lugar, pero no es tan bueno como solía ser.

Amazing fish and chips that aren't greasy and taste delicious. The service is friendly and professional plus you don't wait long for drinks or to give your order or for your food to arrive. We loved it, it has become our favourite for fish and chips and we are prepared to travel 35 minutes drive.

Es un restaurante muy concurrido, pero nos las arreglamos para conseguir una mesa de inmediato. El servicio era muy bueno, el orden se tomó rápidamente, y no esperamos demasiado tiempo para nuestras comidas. El único aspecto negativo de nuestra visita fue que mi pescado estaba principalmente rebozado, y realmente tuve que raspar el pescado de él. Aparte de eso, tuvimos un buen almuerzo.

4 adultos visitaron el restaurante por primera vez. Pedimos un pequeño eglefino sin piel, scampi y dos de las comidas de eglefino más grandes. Todos estábamos muy impresionados con la calidad de la comida principal. Luego tuvimos 2 postres de knickerbocker y dos helados de vainilla. Los helados parecían muy pequeños en comparación con los otros dos desiertos por un precio similar, de ahí 4 estrellas en lugar de 5. Sin duda recomendaría y visitar de nuevo.

Vivimos a 90 millas de distancia, así que cuando visitamos Doncaster siempre venimos a Whitby’s. Ambos tuvimos bacalao regular y patatas fritas, el servicio fue rápido y amable. La comida estaba caliente y sabrosa como siempre. Lástima que pasarán meses antes de que podamos visitar de nuevo. El mejor pescado con papas fritas del país.

Cod and chips and mushy peas from the takeaway. Friendly service, didn't have to wairmt long and the food was brilliant. Beat fish I've ever had. Highly recommend.

We brought our guests from New Zealand to Whitby's to experience quality UK fish and chips in a quality environment. Quite frankly I felt embarrassed at the poor quality of service shown to our party. Upon arrival at the restaurant we could see that it was half empty and yet no-one showed any interest in coming to show us to our table. When we were eventually seated it was by a server who was simply robotic - no warmth and spoke so quickly our guests couldn't understand what she was saying - and as locals even I had to work hard at translating it. 'Skin , no skin?' Barked at us - what a way to take an order? When the order arrived, fairly promptly to be fair, the regular portion of fish was much smaller than when we had visitied previously and the bread and butter ordered was one (yes, one) slice of bread cut in half. Dining there is not inexpensive and the last time (back in April) we brought guests it was sooo much better. Unsurprisingly when it came to pay we didn't leave a tip and I really ought to have complained. My father was Station Officer at the building when it was a fire station and consequently I have an emotional connection with it and have always felt an emotional obligation to patronise it . However, on the basis of yesterday's experience I will not be going back.

Terrible service, waitresses were rude and food was nothing special. Pie was overcooked and dry. Ordered a madri and blackcurrant lemonade and ended up with a blackcurrant madri and normal lemonade. Extremely disappointed and won’t be coming back any time soon.

I was served a monster piece of Haddock but there was an awful lot of batter. Service was good . There was not a lot of atmosphere.

The wife and I went sunday lunch whe.n the cod and chips arrived the batter was pale and soft I was so disappointed also the amount of flies I've never seen so many

Well, I cannot complain about the fish and chips, it was delicious. However, I found the waitress that served us to be very rude, not only did she want us to pass the menus, plates and sides to her instead of walking around the table to get them, at one stage she asked “ are you alright there love?”, and not because she was checking in the food. It was not my job to do her job, and her attitude was awful, that alone would mean I would never go back.

I have been coming to this fish and chips shop for over 10yrs. And I can honestly say it was the worst fish and chips I have had, I asked for lightly battered cod, and it was not. There was no flakes of fish like normal, but just batter, Iwe won't be going back in a hurry.

Great for gluten free. All staff are aware of the severity and do all they can to limit cross contamination. GF food is fried separately and all staff clean their hands before handling any GF food. All food comes labelled separately and bagged/boxed separately with GF stickers on everything.

Went as a family for lunch with my elderly parents.We ordered 2 cod and chips,a jumbo haddock and chips and a starter to be served as a mains.( My father of 94 years has a very small appetite and is only able to eat small portions ,rather than a large meal) We ordered 2 wines a beer and a cider only to be told that next time my father would have to order a mains if he wanted alcohol otherwise we wouldn’t be served, as it was company policy/rules!!!The food was lovely …however..my father felt uncomfortable having a beer and only a starter,and being told next time he wouldn’t be served.

Nothing special. Grilled prawns were boiled and served in a watery liquid without any seasoning. Chips were tepid ,must have been made hours ago. No attempt to drop them in frier before serving. Ratatouille was out of a can.

Excellent food, decent value , always top standards. Take away or food inside restraunt well worth the price charged. Good variety and choice.

Ok - not the best. Chips were overdone, fish was nice, mushy peas had a skin on the top like they’d been sat a while. Service could have also been better, nobody even said hello to us. Wouldn’t revisit.

We’ve been to Whitby’s at the Racecourse for lunch today. The special today was jumbo haddock and chips at £16.95 - and what a *big* one it was too 😂!!! Those of us with normal appetites had regular haddock and chips at £12.25 which is a good size portion. A small portion is also available if required. Fish and chips at Whitby’s is always a treat for us - good size portions, really fresh and succulent fish, perfectly cooked chips, and a good choice of sides and all at reasonable prices!

First visit, wow!! Treated mum to tea, fish n chips with mushy peas to share. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding which was a very generous portion with lashings of sauce. The Best. Staff friendly and helpful. Lewis was our waiter and he was brill. All staff friendly! Great clean restaurant .

Wow, what an amazing place. It is Mothering Sunday. We had to wait an hour for our table. The staff were stretched to their limits, but they kept smiling. The food was wonderful, freshly cooked and tasted great. Would highly recommend.

Oh dear, oh dear, had to happen eventually I suppose...the fish was undercooked and the chips were lukewarm at best. I know what you're thinking, so why five star rating then, well a quick word with Rachael (our waitress) and the food was whisked away and perfect replacements returned several minutes later...no fuss, no arguments. Superb service. It's not what goes wrong that matters but how it's put right...well done all concerned...we will be back.

Went to celebrate my aunties birthday as a party of 13. The service was absolutely horrendous all meals came out at different times with us having to ask as my aunties had been completely forgotten. Drinks forgotten , and the most rude member of staff who accused my elderly aunt 81 years old of clicking her fingers at staff (which never happened) in front of everyone then proceeded to have an argument about it at our table. When I confronted her she said “I was joking”. Myself and all my family work in hospitality and never have experienced anything like it! Totally ruined my aunties birthday , will never go again and advise anyone else to give it a miss unless you want bad service and insults from staff over mediocre fish and chips

This was our first visit since covid, previously visiting every year during the Model railway exhibition. My husband and I were really looking forward to it as on our previous visits the fish and chips were lovely, however today's visit was very disappointing. We had a bit of a wait to be seated but we didn't mind that, but after we ordered our drinks came we had a very long wait for our meal I had finished all my pot of tea by the time the fish and chips arrived. The fish and chips were only lukewarm and over cooked the fish was very dry. We ate it because we were both hungry as we had skipped breakfast so we could enjoy our lunch. When we had finished our plates were whipped away without a word from the waiter so no chance of ordering dessert even if we had wanted to. We felt very squashed in the restaurant with how the tables have been set out. So disappointing after looking forward to it so much, we will not be returning.

Please could you sort this as very bad for Disabled Also whoever decided to put numbers on the table bottom, in my opinion quite unaware of how you thought that could work! The Staff or Customers can not work with numbers near floor. Go check this place out or get a takeaway.

I came in a group and a our tables was reserved so that was a bonus, we was went to the tables to be honest I don’t recall been shown Where the waiter came to take the drinks order which was ok I had ordered hot chocolate it took absolutely ages for the drinks to come I asked a waitress if my hot chocolate was supposed to be hot I said well it’s cold she took it off me with in minutes she brought it back told me to be careful as it was but I think it was microwaved as the cream was nearly melted And down to the fish and chips nice but had better in other fish n chips Restaurants mushy peas nice but a bit expensive staff very polite. Will I go back there to be honest I don’t think so

It was the takeaway at Doncaster The last time we went the chips were overcooked and the fish tasted off. We left it a year and thought we would give it another go but again the fish was horrible and the chips were like warmed up from the day before. I don’t know how they keep in business and they will never get ours again

Delicious food, not just fish n chips though this is its primary function, well cooked and the service is second to none. Everything is super clean and the staff are terrific. Ps sorry Lewis couldn't manage a sweet but thanks for bringing that particular aspect of the menu to our attention (maybe next time) Pps if you want a starter the garlic king prawns are highly recommended. This is one of the best places in the area for fish and chips! We’ve been several times and the quality is always good. No need to book, just turn up and enjoy your meal!

The cod and chips earlier in the week were very good. However the vegetarian lasagne today was 2 out of 10. It was tasteless and the 'feta' cheese was strong tasting goats cheese. I politely complained, but was not offered any discount or compensation, eg., a free coffee. Disappointing...

Lovely food, however disappointed when we all decided to order take home puddings.
