On the 17th may my daughter and I, after having a few days break at one of the holiday lodges nearby, were about to enter these licensed premises. We stopped first at a rubbish disposal area on the opposite side of the road to dispose of a very small black bin liner first, to keep the area clean As the wheelie bins were open and there was no sign at the entrance and it was on the other side of the road to this establishment. Suddenly an employee who did not identify himself, appeared at the entrance and in a threatening and aggressive manner shouted at me that we couldn't place rubbish in the wheelie bin as he owned it. I then asked where I should dispose of it. H e replied, "I don't F****** care". I suggested that he places a sign next to the entrance to the bin corner as I wasn't psychic and I informed this employee that his manner was threatening, aggressive and obscene. The employee again replied, I don't F****** care, I'm F***** leaving on Saturday". I would strongly advise anyone considering visiting this establishment to stay well clear until the manager can reassure the public that this man has indeed left the hotel. Mr, A Major, Dr, H Habibi

Went for dinner with family inc 2 Children, the menu was rubbish for Gf options for my 2 girls, the girl serving was honestly shocking not even a hint of a smile, made us feel unwelcome!! U asked for a fresh candle I got a blank spare and a replacement candle honesty lasted less than 1 minute couldn’t believe it, my partner asked a question about flour relating to gluten free for the children the girl serving gave us a rude answer, this is my honest opinion on our experience tonight, will not be back.

One male member of staff was rude and it ruined our whole opinion of this place. Acted like he didn’t want to give us the time of day. We stayed for one night and it’s a shame because other staff were nice and it would have been an otherwise positive review.

Great accommodation, nice bar and staff, food was very tasty and Tom the Barman could not have been more helpful. Lisa and her partner the chef were the opposite, the meal times mean if you are in Dunoon for Fishing / Walking / stalking etc they will definitely not able to offer any flexibility around meal times or check out - Breakfast closes prompt at 9.45am, Lunch 2:15 and evening meal 7:45 - regardless of your event this is not flexible. The place shuts everyday between 10am - midday leaving you only your room to sit in. For an overnight stay this is probably ok but if you are planning to be out early or back late look for alternative accommodation.

Set in a beautiful location, the hotel has everything; a lovely restaurant and bar, comfortable bedrooms, pleasant front of house staff unfortunately our trip was ruined by the most inhospitable, rigid and inflexible owners I’ve ever had the misfortune to meet. Simple requests were point blank refused for example a 80th birthday party asked for some clingfilm for the birthday cake they were told to use the cake box! they really do need to think about their career choice of hospitality.

Had a nice morning out and bypassed a lot of places to eat to go to the Whistlefield instead because it had been on our list of places to go to eat for some time now. We arrived at 1415 having noted the sign outside saying "Food available until 1430" or words to that effect. I could smell the lovely home cooked food approaching the entrance but before I even stepped foot over the threshold of the pub I was told by the barman that 'foods finished'. That's the end of my Whistlefield visit, can't even tell you what it looked like inside and I never will because I won't be going back

Visited for lunch with family (5 adults, 1 child and a well behaved dog). The choice of food was great and they had options for most diets and a couple of meals that could be for those with smaller appetites. We all found something delicious which was freshly cooked and served very promptly. Desert was delicious too. The surroundings are beautiful and so peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful. What a beautiful location to spend a few days exploring the breathtaking scenery! This hotel sets it itself apart with it’s attention to detail. The tasteful decor makes it feel welcoming, relaxing but special too. The menu catering for vegans was everything you could want and the breakfast next morning was one of the best I’ve had for a long time. Dogs are welcome and not just permitted, they have their own welcome basket on arrival! The staff couldn’t have been more attentive which made the stay very very good indeed. A Birthday celebration for my wife was a big disappointment as the restaurant did not offer any Starters which was a big issue for a night out visit and the ambiance was lacking in the main dining room, The fire alarm went off and nobody came to tell us to evacuate, or that it was now safe to stay. The food was good but about average. We had finished our main course in under an hour and left before dessert. Will pop back for lunch but feel that when I booked it should have been pointed out that a limited menu was in operation.

Sometimes you come across a spot that ticks all of the boxes...stunning scenery, a warm and cosy atmosphere, a great choice of ales, superb service and a menu you just want to keep exploring. The Whistlefield is one such place!Dating back to 1663, this old drovers' inn overlooks the glorious Loch Eck halfway between Strachur and Dunoon with fantastic views in all directions. We popped in one weekday lunchtime and the place was empty...it should have been packed even in a pandemic but it had little impact on what was a very positive experience. There was friendly conversation with the lass behind the bar from the start as we were positioned opposite a roaring log fire and a stuffed coo called Rosie! This really was the perfect pubby environment for a good old winter ale session with friends...I could have happily stayed in-situ for hours wallowing in the absolute definition of cosiness whilst getting slowly mashed but we were here for lunch and it was just the one pint of Fyne Ales' Workbench. What a menu...I'd have been happy with pretty much everything they offered..both the meat dishes and an impressive array of vegan and vegetarian creations. I went for the vegan cottage pie, my partner opted for the scampi. Two enormous plates, the size of small Pacific island nations, arrived in double quick time. The sumptious cottage pie came with new potatoes, sprouts, carrots and red cabbage, representing around 17 of your five a day! The scampi and chips was similarly expansive with a generous side salad and chips that could have doubled up as girders, such were their girth!A chocolate orange truffle torte provided a wonderfully rich conclusion to what was a fantastic experience at a lovely spot. A big thank you to Clare for making us both feel very welcome as well as the other staff we chatted with.Goes without saying we'll be back...again and again and again!

We stayed 3 nights as part of our touring around the quieter Lochs. Its location is perfect having the best of stunning views over Loch Eck with misty majestic starts to the day, ending with enjoying a drink watching the sun go down in the late afternoons. Its a great base to do some easy walks, but take the car for further things like Puck Glen, Ardentinny and Glenbanter waterfalls. The breakfasts are great quality and quantity, so if you have a small appetite, as for a smaller breakfast. Our room had the Loch view and I sat on the high stools and had a coffee to enjoy them. The small but efficient team run the hotel like clockwork. My only big disappointment was no cosy fire to watch with a nightcap in the evening as I was told they don't put them on until October :( If you want to chill, this is the place. We would definitely recommend it, and will be back :)

The Whistlefield Inn truly is a bit of a hidden gem. I had not even heard of the place before deciding to book a family staycation in the Cowal area to correspond with my daughters 30th birthday. Looking around for somewhere to go we truly hit the jackpot. This traditional Inn has been modernised in almost a perfect blend of old and new. The outlook over Loch Eck is stunning especially as the sun began to set. Our hosts Jake and Suzy were attentive and efficient, but also brought an element of humour, immediately making us feel at home. Even puting up with an inquisitive 14mth old who decided to break the covid rules and try to visit and smile at every other diner in the room. They also joined in with the singing of Happy Birthday as they brought the cake out. At first we were curious as to why there were no starters on the menu, but when the main courses came, we soon understood. Portion size was huge and immediately made the food exceptional value for money. And I can honestly say this was not a case of quantity over quality. The food was excellent. We also visited during the day for a quiet drink and got to see a quieter Whistlefield bathed in sunshine. All in all a brilliant establishment with a real passion in what they do. Even though we live in the opposite side of Scotland, I think another visit is very much on the cards.

We chose The Whistlefield as a Sunday night stop on a campervan honeymoon weekend trip around the Cowal and couldn't have been happier that we did.Just before arriving we heard that another landslide had closed the A83 but an evening in The Whistlefield had us so relaxed that even that couldn't disrupt our weekend. The £40 campervan overnight deal, where you get the full £40 back as a food and drink voucher, is inspired and the staff, food and drink we're all perfect. My wife had a Black Rock venison steak which was fantastic and I had liver and onion which was rich and unctuous.I cannot recommend The Whistlefield enough and the effort they put in to social distancing and COVID prevention was evident.

At the end of riding the Scottish 500 we were tired and were looking forward to a pub for the final nights stay, the other hotels we had visited throughout the trip were not up to much so we weren't holding our breath, but... the Whistlefield Inn is spectacular! The staff are very friendly, two of them had only been there for one week and they worked extremely hard, they knew the hotel/bar/restaurant as if it were their own and made it all the more memorable. The rooms were extremely comfortable, the evening meal was well cooked and hot, the showers were stay-in-able, the breakfast was particularly enjoyable, the beer selection was vast with some very local beers - just down the road! the whisky selection, the ambiance, the locals, the setting...On top of all this, they have space for motorhomes, they run team building events, functions, and its been doing this since 1664.Needless to say we will be heading back here on all future bike trips to Scotland's West Coast and using it as a base for three/four days riding.

Shower very small but oh so powerful and warm. My friend stayed in room 6 and had stunning views over Loch Eck. We ate at the restaurant both evenings. My friend loved it but I found the menu a little lacking. That’s probably me being faddy. If you want steak or venison you have to cook it yourself in hot stones and I didn’t fancy that. Breakfast was stunningly delicious and cooked fresh. The restaurant and breakfast room have strict distancing in operation. Great base to explore the Argyll Forest and 10 minutes from Benmore Botanic Gardens.

Stayed last night in our motorhome. There's no camping facilities as such but you pay £40 to stay in car park and you get the £40 back to spend on food and drink. We ate in the cozy bar area which was really nice as we were able to chat with the staff, who are all lovely and a real credit to the place. They do everything they can to make your experience as normal as possible during these very 'unnormal' times. I really can't fault anything and we'll definitely be back. Food was excellent and the dessert menu is to die for! You should definitely make a booking though as we saw several people being turned away. Of course, capacity is much lower these days. Dog friendly too, with free dog biscuits on the bar. We spent a really relaxing couple of hours there and it was lovely to be able to chat with fellow diners, thanks to there being only very quiet music in the background.

Booked for a Wednesday night during holiday, after dropping in on the previous Sunday to find it fully booked (partly due to reduced capacity due to social distancing). Some of us had steak without realising the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme applied. It ended up extremely good value indeed. Note though it comes on a hot rock, so you effectively ‘cook’ it to your liking at the table. We didn’t regret giving it a go, despite it being a super hot evening! Kids had other meals, but both happy with theirs. Puddings were delicious. Good menu, including usual favourites and some veg options. A lot of attention to safety in relation to COVID. Not many pubs/ restaurants in the area back to serving food yet so if you’re in the area, can highly recommend but might need to book ahead. I believe dogs are also welcome.

Toughest decision of the night was choosing which ice cream to go with our puds...The new decor is gorgeous and the atmosphere inside was vibrant. Our weekly treat always involves a trip to Whistlefield after a day on the hills. Very good and reassuring Covid measures in place that did not spoil the vibe. Can't recommend enough.

Visited for the first time with friends on Wednesday, enjoyed that much I went back with my husband on Friday. Had the lunch menu on both days. Food very tasty, fresh, large portions and nice and hot the way I like. Also had our dog with us too which is a lovely touch. Staff are welcoming and friendly, overall a great experience and we will be back again.

This was our first experience of socially distanced dining and have to say it was a pleasant surprise and very relaxed. No issues at all with tables being used sparingly and a good distance apart. The staff were very friendly and the menu choices were excellent. The three dishes ordered (Scampi, Lasagne & Balmoral Chicken) were absolutely superb as were the desserts - the flavoured ice cream amazing!Another great thing was the dining area we were in being dog-friendly with our two lying peacefully at the table - both enjoyed their wee dog treat Absolutely recommend here for a meal and will definitely be back whenever staying in the area

My wife and I and good pals booked for dinner last weekend shortly after restaurants re-opened. We were cautious about safety for our anniversary dinner so chose Whistlefield as we had seen their film online sharing their physical distancing changes. We enjoyed a lovely meal of stuffed chicken, 2 of us had chicken curry and I had lovely fish in tempura batter and chips. The welcome (as usual) was friendly and all staff working hard, and well, to keep everyone safe. Really lovely to be back and will see you soon. Many thanks for everything!

Visited for the weekend for personal reasons with my husband. Staff are friendly and the inn is well run especially during trying times. We were in room 6 and the views of the loch are spectacular. Room had everything we needed, and there's no noise from other rooms. We dined both nights and food was amazing, we thought the fish on the Saturday night was good but the steak pie on Sunday was sublime. My other half loved it and I make a mean steak pie but he raved about it and would definitely visit again just for this. Breakfast was good, plentiful, hot and well cooked. This place is a gem and definitely worth a visit if you're just passing or for an overnight stay. I absolutely loved my time there and found it so peaceful and tranquil, something long overdue and well need break after some devastating heartbreak prior to lockdown. I will definitely be visiting again.

This was our 1st choice for lunch after lockdown. My good lady swears by the fish n chips and this time I opted for the chicken, ham and leek pie. Lovely food and we were so well looked after for what is a strange time indeed. Thank you

Stunning location, great view from the restaurant but you also have a choice of areas to sit in. Reasonable prices, very friendly staff.. never a bad meal. Steak pie in particular best had. Great vegetarian options. COVID safe and appealing to visit in current climate too!

Visited for a birthday meal last night and the food was delicious. We especially liked cooking our own steaks on the slate, we have never done that before and it's a brilliant way of cooking your steak exactly the way you like it.They were busy, with not many staff, but we were very impressed by how quickly and cheerfully we were served. If you are in the area pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed.

Reserved a table for lunch today. Got in at 1 and the fire was roaring and staff friendly and welcoming. The Veggie, vegan and fish menu is one of the best around. I went wild and had Fish and chips! and my wife had the Chickpea Curry, delicious and portion size just right. We then had the vegan apple pie with vegan ice cream, again very tasty. This is our 3rd visit over the past year (we live in Dunoon) and will continue to treat ourselves now and again.

Have been here a few times for both lunch and dinner and can honestly say cant find fault with the food, excellent quality particularly the stone steaks which adds a bit of fun to the meal, and a favourite of my my husband and son, a little bit on the big side for me maybe a smaller alternative would be good but can't complain. Starters were delicious, not a large selection but can recommend the smoked salmon. my only niggle with this restaurant is that they couldn't provide a portion of bread or a roll for the children to have while we were having starters. The waitress asked the kitchen but was told that they didn't have any out !! this was despite one of the starters listed (the soup) comes with a freshly baked roll !!! A cheap staple and not difficult to provide from any kitchen. We will continue to eat at the Whistlefield but will maybe bring my own bread in the future. Pity because it lost them a star on the ratings. Staff were great, friendly and attentive and have to be commended for their professionalism , a credit to the restaurant.

Over to visit friends in Dunoon and chose this lovely Inn on the banks of Loch Eck.(More really for the dog as it was his first holiday with us as a family and it is dog friendly )We were greeted very warmly and shown to our rooms overlooking the Loch. Rooms were small, but nicely decorated and well stocked with water, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Very comfortable bed and clean and tidy. Cosy bar with an excellent choice of beers, and spirits !!! Excellent breakfast before having a brisk walk with the dog, then home. Would recommend for weary travellers and would definitely come back .

We were driving around the Cowal peninsula and having driven from Ardentinny to the beautiful Loch Eck we chanced upon this old pub and decided to stop for lunch. There was a fire on and a pleasant atmosphere moreover we were given a warm welcome. A couple had just vacated a table near the fire, there were other tables in others parts of the restaurant, but we wanted near the fire so our timing was impeccable. The young girl serving apologised for not having cleaned the table but it was an observation of our visit that she was rushed off her feet and very industrious. Our luck ran out on timing as all the baguettes has been sold so we both ordered small scampi portions with fries which were huge (for £7.50). As I was driving I had a come but my wife said her glass of Malbec was lovely. I also noted a huge whisky selection, All in all, delightful.

i booked the Whistlefield for a birthday dinner on the basis of good reviews on TripAdvisor. Walking from the car park to the back door, We noticed a distinct lack of activity in the kitchen.. The menu presented to us did not include any starters, which we thought strange although we would probably not have ordered one anyway. the main courses, other than sizzling steaks, was a combination of pies, lasagne etc.. All very hearty but some lighter choices might have been offered. We ordered steak and mushroom pudding, The stew was very tasty but dwarfed by the volume of (undercooked?) suet pudding. The accompanying vegetables were enjoyable. Desserts were very good but we found it strange to have both chocolate & orange tart and chocolate & orange torte on the same menu..

It looked and felt very welcoming . The young lady behind the bar welcomed us and took our order and made us feel at home. The Chicken and Leek pie and the fresh veg and mash were superb, my partners filo pastry pie was just as good.

The charming and historic Whistlefield Inn was the perfect choice as a base to explore this area of natural beauty. A short stroll down to the Loch is a great way to start the day. Rooms are small though warm, cosy and clean. The bar is welcoming as were the hardworking owners and staff, who nothing was too much trouble for when asked. The dinner menu included home cooked favourites and always delicious. A hearty breakfast overlooking the panoramic scenery was always special. Plenty of parking is available although we didn’t drive and took a private tour around the region. The local bus stops at the road entrance of the Inn which is very convenient for some of the nearby attractions, such as Belmore Botanical Gardens. Will definitely plan a return visit.

We stayed overnight here with our dog. A warm friendly welcome and we were shown to our immaculate room overlooking the Loch. Husband enjoyed a “Fyne” pint in the fabulous bar. The menu was varied and the food was substantial and excellent. Staff were friendly and although the restaurant was very busy we didn’t have to wait long. A good nights sleep in a comfy bed and a walk along the Loch early morning before breakfast where again there was an excellent choice. Even the dog was spoilt with a breakfast of sausages! I can only highly recommend the Whistlefield Inn - I just wish we lived nearer.

This is not a place for anyone on a health kick but the food is good quality, traditional British cooking of a very good standard. The waitresses are keen to please, attentive and friendly. We ate steak and kidney pudding, steak and ale pie and lasagne - all arrived hot and with plenty of vegetables. Desserts are all chocolate or apple based and very yummy. Again - not for dieters! The chocolate and orange cake was gooey and delicious.

I visited the Whistlefield Inn a few months back with family who were visiting. The service then was appalling. It took a very long time for someone to speak to us at the not very busy bar, 3 people were behind the bar doing things. We finally got sat down at the table we had booked and when it came to getting more drinks I had to go through to the bar again and wait a very long time yet again when I could have been catching up with family. The food was good and they had just opened so I thought we should go back when staff were more settled.

We visited the Whistlefield Inn after reading good reviews on TripAdvisor. We used the post code from TripAdvisor but the pub/restaurant was about a mile further north than our satnav directed us. We ate in the bar area as we had a dirty dog after a walk around Puck’s Glen (recommended) but there were beautiful views of Loch Eck from some of the tables in the restaurant. We both had the steak and pudding suet pudding, which was lovely and light accompanied by a pint of Fyne Ales’ Jara, well pulled by the way. The staff were smiling and friendly, extra gravy was not an issue. I liked the decor especially the twigs and lights on the ceiling. At about £30, I thought it was good value too.

Was expecting great quality fresh food . But very disappointed . Looking forward to local mussels but off the menu . Scallops were fresh but the sauce let it down and the bread was stale and expensive . Both in the end had fish and chips , that was two very small pieces of fish each , couldn't hardly see any fish , most likely frozen due to the texture and appearance . Staff were excellent and beer was good

I am giving you an excellent review based on previous visits but arrived Thursday 14th November at 11:15 and it was closed. Website says open at 10:00 and opening time on door says 10:30. Several people left disappointed during my 20min seat on bench. Off to Port Bannatyne for my brunch. Can you update your opening hours on door and social media platforms.

Met up with a friend for lunch today. ALWAYS reliably happy with our meals at The Esplanade over the many years.... But today's young chef was very astute with his skills. We had *Cullen skink, the baguette was fresh and warmed....so often it is not; (it's the little things like this that make you come back,), *fish n chips, and *incredibly chunky steak pie, with a lid rising up to the ceiling I'm my opinion all 3 meals really were the best examples on the island. Well done to: *The Esplanade for keeping up the standards of quality which bring people back * The Chef * The always friendly and helpful waitress 😁 (Love the new curtains and furnishings 😁)
