The Western Isles Hotel Restaurant in Argyll & Bute

The view is outstanding! ...and the hotel and restaurant are certainly (and rightly) the best in town. We only visited the restaurant and the lounges. Unfortunately, the food and service didn't impress me: the menu is interesting and varied, the meal (spiced couscous with fish) was tasty, but unfortunately greasier than necessary. The service seemed a bit helpless and insecure. The ambiance is certainly beautiful thanks to the great view, but the decor is quite simple. I would still recommend a lunch visit to the Western Isles Conservatory to everyone.

Quiet dining room with pleasant staff and lovely food and views over the loch make for a very nice setting whether dining alone or in a group.

It’s well over 40 years since I last visited the Western Isles Hotel and it has clearly gone a bit upmarket, with the restaurant now sited in a warm and inviting modern conservatory. We took a rather modest meal – mains and a shared dessert, washed down by excellent Scottish beers and the local smoky malt (Ledaig). The pan-seared hake on a bed of braised lentils was slightly on the dry side, while the vegan puff pastry Wellington was seriously excellent, comprising nuts, root vegetables and smoky spice. The local cheese platter was a great way to seal the deal. A ceilidh band played in the background and the place was full on a drizzly Ne’erday night. On balance we had a relaxing time and left feeling satisfied rather than bloated, despite the very generous portion sizes.

Dining room was cold the toilet was even colder 🥶 food was ok nothing great over priced could not wait to leave

A wonderful stay visiting my family over the festive season. Stayed in the Ghille room which is part of the turret. A warm welcome, the best Eggs Florintine , most comfortable beds, friendly staff, smart TV .

A wonderful stay for mychristmas visit to see family. Stayed in Ghille room and it was warm and cosy, beautiful bed like sleeping on a cloud, smart TV great selection of beverages and toiletries. A breakfast of Kings, possibly the best Eggs Florintine I've tasted . Evening g meal outstanding with local produce. Very highly recommend sitting in the lounge designed by Banjo Beale and warming by the open fire.

We stayed at the hotel for three nights and enjoyed every moment of our stay. Our Delux room was spacious and clean, but the view of the sea was the biggest highlight! The breakfast was delicious and fresh, we enjoyed playing board games and darts in the leisure rooms of the hotel. The only thing I would like to note is that the hotel is situated in the hill so takes fair amount of strength to get there.

Lunch in the Conservatory overlooking Tobermory Bay with family and my wee dog. Doesn’t get much better than this - well it did as we all had the Special Lunch Menu - three courses for £15.00 (yes fifteen pounds Sterling each in case you thought I had mistyped) . A selection of three choices for starters, main courses and afters - if you have room. If not then it is only £10.00 for two courses. Everything was nicely presented, freshly prepared and tasted as good as it looked.

When you see hotels like this, experience leads you to temper your expectations, however my brother & I were blow away by this place (and we are picky sods!). The rooms are comfy and well prepared, but what marks this place apart is the restaurant and bar. An epic selection of whisky started things well, but the food was simply superb. So many times I’ve had badly-cooked scallops, but not here. Spot on. Chicken Balmoral for main was light & superb - not the stodge that’s often associated with this classic lazy-Scottish hotel dish. Whoever the chef is, he’s a bit of a legend! Speaking of which, Adam & Zac were a giggle. A perfect blend of friendly banter & professionalism. I never expected to say this, but I’ll be back. This part of the world needs places like this. A bloody superb end to a pretty epic day. Thanks all!

The restaurant was recommended to us for Sunday Roast by the staff the the local distillery. Although the atmosphere and view were very good, the food was disappointing. We ordered lamb which tasted more like a preformed roast than fresh meat. The roast potatoes were tasty but overly crisp as if they were reheated. We were there when they first opened on Sunday so the experience was surprising. Our experience didnt match the other reviews.

We ate at this restaurant but were not staying at the hotel. Location is very good. Menu broad. Starter which was a selection of various type of local fish was very good. For main I had burger which was a bit disappointing. My partner really liked her chicken and lentils. Atmosphere in the restaurant was a bit dead, it missed something, maybe light music I rated a 4, but on the lower end

Comfortable, friendly hotel with superb views from water facing rooms and the terrace . Had a lovely fishy lunch and drinks on the terrace and a good evening meal of mainly seafood in the bright dining/bar area..excellent views from this dining area at breakfast. Especially when the weather is good there is nowhere better.

Sunday lunch - roast beef was gristly and disappointing, fish and chips better. Service a bit abrupt. Best thing was the view over the harbour. There’s plenty of choice in Tobermory and I can see why this place isn’t very busy. Wouldn’t bother going back.

The conservatory restaurant has the most magnificent views of the harbour and stunning landscape. We stayed 3 nights and all the meals we had were fabulous- well cooked, well presented and delicious, in a lovely relaxed environment

A great hotel, really enjoyed our stay. Staff very welcoming, helpful and friendly- nothing was too much bother. Great views, lovely drawing room and quirky wee pool room super to have a drink in after dinner. Kirstie was exceptionally good on reception.

From a warm welcome,spotless large bedroom with walk in shower,all is needed for 3 night stay. Excellent evening meals choice and standard as was breakfast,view over bay was stunning,once you could see through rain,2 days of rain and wind must have been end of hurricane?? We had a great dinner here and the booking process online was really simple and fast. Views from the window seat we had were great overlooking the harbour from the top of the town! Food was excellent and the service was brilliant - our bubbly and informative kiwi waitress was a joy! There was a great wine list and an even better whisky selection. The only down side was that they didn’t seem to have a bar space to go and sit in after dinner. There was a lounge but you had to buy drinks at the end of dinner to take with you into there. I would just mention that the restaurant is dog friendly - which we loved, but may not be to everyone’s liking.

This is my first stay in this hotel and i can't wait till im back. I was absolutely taken aback with service from reception to waiting staff, nothing was to much trouble and in second night the waiting staff remembered me from night before, which I think is excellent, food fantastic, views from restaurant unforgettable, well done everyone, will definitely be back.

The reception was very warm and kind. Kirsty welcomed us giving all the necessary instructions. She made sure we have everything we need for a smooth nice stay. The room was prepared by the time we arrived. We needed an iron and a table for some shirts to be ironed, which Kirsty immediately delivered to our room. Since l am a wisky fan, l enquired about the local distilery. Well, l did not know that Kirsty used to worked there, so she flooded me with very interesting informations about it. The next day we went and purchased 2 bottles of their finest local Ledaig. The hotel room was very spacious, with a fantastic view to the harbour. I will rry to attach some pictures here if possible. The bed was supper! I slept in the same position for 10 hours, which usually does not happen. The hotel was quiet and clean. The breakfast with a view just came to add an extra star to the 5 l would give this hotel.... Very friendly staff, especially Maria who helped us with the breakfast related things. Overall, a 6 star hotel! We will defo come back one day...

The hotel website says “Our Conservatory Restaurant and Bar is open to Residents and Non Residents all week…With stunning views of Tobermory bay and the sound of Mull, what better place to watch the world go by?” Well I could think of quite a lot of places. I popped in just after 6pm for a pint but as I headed from the bar across the near deserted room to a table by the window with my bottle of ale (£7.50) I was gruffly told by an incredibly condescending waitress that I couldn’t sit there but had to sit on the other side of the room, away from the window and behind a pillar. Presumably in case a coach load of diners suddenly turned up because nearly all the tables were empty. I said I’d sit on the terrace outside but she wouldn’t tell me how to get there. When I put my beer down and said I’d go elsewhere then, she laughed in my face. I don’t know if this waitress was an anomaly but the impression left on me is that you’d get a better welcome at Fawlty Towers than the Western Isles hotel.

Lovely hotel with an amazing view. We stayed two nights. However service at the restaurant was horrible. We didn’t felt welcome at all. Therefore I can give only 3 stars.

We had the best experience! The most warm and most friendliest welcome and we literally had the best sleep! My Fitbit can confirm that! Most accommodating and friendliest staff. Un des plus bel endroit pour manger, terrasse avec une vue exceptionnelle sur la baie. Personnel avenant et plats délicieux. Nous avons passé une nuit magnifique avec un petit déjeuner unique qui vaut largement un brunch.

I’m almost sorry to have to give only 3 stars, all was going so well with pre dinner cocktails and the fantastic view, right up until the main was served when the waiter queried “did you only order one main course?” Apparently the venison I had ordered was not available and nobody had thought to tell me! I then ordered a substitute main and sat watching my partner eat, she had to do the same while I ate my main! Not the romantic meal I had hoped for. We did get apologies and my main was left off the bill so some effort was made to rectify the mistake but sadly our evening was spoiled.

Hotel is tired . But in saying that. Food was amazing staff were lovely helpful and happy . Receptionist was amazing we had a few issues with our booking but sorted everything out for us. ( Thankyou) room had amazing views but very tired needs a refurb as does the residents area longe. Carpets very grubby . Nothing a good clean wouldn’t solve . But would stay here again as I say just needs a lick of paint . But well worth staying here good experience

Lovely hotel with one of the best views on the island. Enjoyed this short stay immensely - would love to come back for a longer time. They were also very helpful when we needed to go out in the evening and we returned early morning. Breakfast was enjoyable with lots of options (Scottish and continental).

Such a beautiful spot! We were greeted with such warmth and attention from the waiters. Our wine knowledge is sub par so kindly Adam talked us through the wine list and guided us to the options best suited to us. We were both delighted with our choices, I went for a Viogner and my partner went for the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, both amazing recommendations! We absolutely loved soaking up the views from the restaurant with an amazing glass of wine and brilliant service from all of the wonderful staff. We hope to come back soon and try the food - it smelt amazing! Special thanks to the guys for letting us enjoy the view of the rainbow from the terrace, amazing inclusivity!

Accueil chaleureux et vue à couper le souffle! Ne pas s attendre toutefois à de la haute gastronomie...mais c'était tout à fait bon. Seul bémol, le pourboire (12.5%!) ajouté d office à l addition (avec une discrète mention "discretionary" comprise en sortant. Le montant avec pourboire a toutefois été débité sans que la question soit posée ).

We visited for dinner and had a wonderful experience. It started with a game of pool and darts in the bar area, tastefully decorated in a nostalgic 1930’s style. Then we sat in the comfortable sitting room with great books and an amazing view. Then onto dinner, generous portions, friendly staff, more amazing views, and grooves music. All the time our hired Tesla was charging outside. Fantastic.

Steer clear of this establishment; not only is the service nonexistent, but you're also greeted with the waiter's bad breath. The seafood platter we ordered was disappointing, with low-quality salmon cuts, poorly cleaned mussels, subpar hummus, and just four crackers. We were served water glasses that appeared unwashed, adding to the overall disgust with this establishment.

Lovely Hotel, we had no hot water, and when we asked about it, the receptionist reply was thats about as good as it gets" Our wine glasses in the room both had lipstick on them,

A friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We really.enjoyed our stay here. The food was top class and the service too.

Four of us ate here on a Tuesday night. My husband had the beef burger and I had the chicken burger. My husband's dessert was the brownie and rest of us shared the cheese board. The food and drinks were nice. Service was prompt. One issue: The chairs have square pads on a round seat. The pad is too wide so it kept sliding sideways.

Amazing hotel, fantastic staff, wonderful food!! Hotel is at the top of the hill overlooking Tobermory bay. We dodged all the bad weather happening on the mainland and arrived in glorious sunshine and had 3 days of perfect weather. When checking in the lady at reception gave us the Macallan room on the third floor. No lift available so lots is stairs to get there, but what a view!! The room itself was huge and the shower room was a decent size with great shower. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The TV is small and because of the size of the room it was hard to watch so we didn’t bother with it, the view of the bay was more than enough to compensate. Every member of staff was helpful and smiling and honestly couldn’t do enough for us. We had dinner on the first night and I had the Isle of Mull scallops with black pudding crumb, apple purée and lemon dill for starter and had the chicken burger with smoked bacon, melted Brie and cranberry relish for mains. My partner had the Island crab linguine with roasted garlic, rocket & fresh mint (starter size) and also Pumpkin and sage tortellini (also starter size). For dessert she had the sticky toffee pudding with puff candy, toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream which she said was the best she had ever had. The food was just spectacular. Overall we had a great time here and would definitely be back. 100% recommend.

Worth going for the view alone. Several vegan/veggie options including couple that were also gluten free. Extensive wine list, much of which was also vegan, & great cocktails.

Nothing was too much for the manager and staff and this made our special event relaxed, in a wonderful setting with amazing views over the bay. 30 people at a 2 course Sunday lunch, the food was perfect, from beautiful tender beef to perfectly cooked scallops everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to all the staff for making it an afternoon to remember.

Delicious, beautifully presented Sunday lunch, served in the conservatory, with stunning views of the harbour, Sound of Mull over to Scotland. They offer a good and varied menu, and the service was excellent.

We were lucky enough to book in for dinner one night on our trip to Tobermory. Our own hotel restaurant left a lot to be desired. Immediately as you enter the hotel it feels light and welcoming. We were greeted by a waiter who was lovely (would have been better if he’d not be chewing gum) and seated at our table. We were immediately brought bread and provided with the menus. The view was fantastic of the harbour. The restaurant has so many windows so you really do get a good view. My mum and I both ordered the same main and were happy with what we received. The only issue was that the fish portion was really quite small. Overall a lovely evening. If we were to return to Tobermory we would definitely try to stay at this hotel.

Nice bar, good choise of Whisky and Gin. The only thing we misted is a bar menu with all the Whiskies and Gin's listed with the propper informations like age (year), ABV and price.

Fantastic meal with the best view in Tobermory. The staff were all very lovely, friendly and so helpful. We were lucky enough to be there during the Mull Music Festival so enjoyed music with our meal - can't wait to return!

We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was fabulous. Really loved it. However the service was a bit patchy. There seemed to be enough staff but the service wasn’t great. Unlit candles on the tables despite it getting darker, a long long wait to pay our bill and a waitress who barely spoke English and was stroppy when she didn’t understand us.
