A great little spot for a weekend away - the location was ideal just next to the ferry on the promenade. The room was fine, with a super view of the sea - they did not clean the rooms due to an ongoing COVID measure which seemed odd, but for a weekend this was fine. The staff at breakfast were really lovely particularly, and the bar staff helped take up our luggage (note there are three flights of stairs so not a hotel for those with mobility issues). Overall would recommend for location, breakfast and view!

I would say this place is retro, but it's original and not putting on airs... Victoria is classic. The gentleman working daytime reception is very deliberate and has done what he does probably a thousand times. The breakfast comes with the room and it's in a fun little restaurant area just off reception. I enjoyed it, but those looking for cutting edge amenities won't. But then again, it would be difficult to find that type of thing on the island.

Never stayed here but went for breakfast from another hotel breakfast was okay standard Scottish breakfast you get a surprise at the end with extra 5 pound charge for toast that they offered to go with it no mention of the five pound charge until you pay your bill very over priced for cold toast as pointed out by the manager the manager it was for two people 1.25 per slice of cold toast is still very over priced

Hotel was fine for a night. Check in was a bit awkward, as was breakfast in the morning. Place is old fashioned but the room was really cute and I loved the view out of the window! Shower didn’t drain very well, room lock was weird, bed was possibly one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever slept in (or tried to) at a hotel, and room was freezing cold all night even with the radiator on full blast as it was clearly only single glazing ! People were nice, and breakfast food-wise was at least decent. No hotel parking but street parking was super quiet at this time of year

We chose this place for our evening meal, it was upstairs above Ghilles , but i believe is ran by the same people. We were given a window table which had great scenery , there was plenty to choose from on the menu, we had the pie and the meat was very tender. The tables were spread out to social distance everyone. i would recommend booking to make sure you get a table

When I go to a hotel restaurant I do not expect a "Pub grub" menus nor do I expect plastic table cloths. My wife's starter was avacardo & prawns, but with extremely limited avacardo;my starter was muscles in sauce, and the muscles were decidedly "ify". That said my stake was excelent. When it come to wine I would hope to be offered a wider choice then "Red or White" Overall I was VERY underwhelmed and the to be charged £75:00 for a very indifferent meal for two served in a room in need of a total redecoration

What? An awful experience? Pray tell. Restaurant going to be busy so if you just want to come in on the off chance we might’ve be able to fit you in. Upon arrival, the place is completely empty. Anyway, out first conversation with the staff, there’ll be a wait as we’re busy downstairs. Ok no problem we’ll admire the views. Drinks and meals ordered. Then the experience begins. Steak undercooked. Wrong accompaniments served, the hand cut chips, anaemic and inedible. Food sent back only to be returned burnt to beyond recognition. Well it does say chargrilled on the menu because it’s cooked on a chargrill!! Furness comes to mind. Oh and sometimes the steak is rarer in the middle as we can’t check every one. Ah and the hand cut chips? Well they’re not quite hand cut but done through a cutter and then frozen and we take them out and cook them. Cooked? They’re uncooked on the inside?! Well it’s the potatoes you see, it’s whatever the suppliers send us, but if you’re unhappy, I’ll see about taking a couple of pounds off for the chips!! Fillet steak taken off the bill as didn’t eat it? Ah I hear you cry, what a kind gesture. Alas, it wasn’t to be. As I’d asked for that and the bottle of wine to be taken off as a goodwill gesture, I wasn’t expecting the sirloin steak, which was £4 cheaper to be taken off!! Needless to say, bill sent back. After my first visit to the island, would I recommend this restaurant? Absolutely not!!

My partner and I booked a table here for 8.15pm. We waited an hour and 5 mins for our starters. When the mussels arrived for my main, 60% of them were shrivelled up in their shells. They had obviously sat too long before being served. The waitress was apologetic, it wasn't her fault. We probably wouldn't go back.

An unpretentious hotel restaurant offering traditional and inventive menu options. The Victoria is a survival from an earlier era. It must have been very elegant in its day. Located in the main hotel and upstairs from the Ghillie's restaurant with which it shares a kitchen, the Victoria Hotel restaurant offers diners superb sea views and a nice upmarket dining experience. Our family of three had a very nice meal with a delicious cherry Tomato & Fresh Basil Bruschetta (with Balsamic Glaze), followed by Surf & Turf (6oz Rump Steak & Scampi), Seared Pan Fried Sea Bass and a Spaghetti Carbonara. The Bruschetta was absolutely delicious and the Surf & Turf and Sea Bass were also well received. The Spaghetti Carbonara was a different story as it was way too creamy and the 'bacon' was more akin to lumps of tinned luncheon meat and were quite a few off-putting fatty lumps. I noticed a diner at an adjacent table had also ordered the Spaghetti Carbonara and like me, ate less than half of it. Otherwise, the meal, service and general ambience were excellent.

My husband and I have been coming to Bute for many years and a visit to The Victoria for a quiet meal whilst Grandma babysits the children is something of a tradition. We have previously received excellent service and food and have left reviews to that effect, however sadly this year things have taken a real down turn. We arrived around 7.50pm on Tuesday evening. Upon asking for a table, the lady behind the desk made a grimace face and said "I think we're fully booked but I'll check". She disappeared and brought an older gentleman (presumably the manager) to the reception area who said they were busy but we could wait if we wanted. We said we'd go downstairs to Ghillies but he said "it will just be the same - we share a kitchen" He suggested we try the Esplanade Hotel just along the street and called them to see if they had space (despite us saying not to worry). Whilst continuing his conversation on the phone (with no indication that they had space or not) we decided we'd wait and having been to The Victoria before made our way to the lounge and ordered drinks. We were given menus and within 2 minutes of looking at them a table had become available. Upon entering the dinning room, there was a party of 8 and a few other couples who left very shortly after we sat at our 4 person table. I ordered the scallops and black pudding starter and home made beef steak pie and chips. My husband had Trio of pakora and Tandori Chicken. My scallops were brought out on their own and after a few minutes my husband insisted I start as the scallops would get old quickly. Eventually his starter was delivered and can only be described as HUGE chips in flavoured batter!! They were literally half a potato deep fried in three flavoured batters. Our main meals were delivered and although my steak pie was very nice and well cooked, I would have liked my chips not to have been swimming in the gravy. My husbands tandoori chicken was nice but he was unable to finish the vegetables (peppers and aubergine) because they continued to cook on the sizzling metal plate and were carbonised by the end. Our dinner plates were taken away and we waited, and waited and waited....... for about 10 minutes. We'd both left space for pudding (knowing from previous visits how good they were). We gave up waiting and asked for a dessert menu. The reply was "sorry, the kitchen's closed, you can have tea or coffee" !!!!!!!! We were really shocked and very disappointed. At no time did any of the waiting staff say the kitchen would be closing at X time (presumably 9pm as we are now at 9.02pm). How hard would it have been to have checked that our main meal was OK and to mention that the kitchen would be closing soon and did we want to pre-order a dessert? We got the bill, which again after a significant wait I was told it could only be paid for at the bar and resulted in waving the card machine around in order to get a wifi connection(!!!) and we left. Upon reflection, I believe that actually they didn't want us to stay (hence calling the Esplanade Hotel) and didn't want to keep the kitchen open for us (all other tables were nearing the end of their meals). Their loss, not just for the £12 they could have made from our desserts on this visit, but all future meals (around £60 a time) we would have had there as we will now go elsewhere. I would have preferred it if they had just been honest at the start. Told us that the kitchen closed at 9am and given us the choice of ordering earlier. I'm not sure if it's change ownership in the last year but the food and certainly the service are definitely not what they were.

Our B&B host recommended that for seafood, we should eat at Ghillie’s rather than at Victoria’s although they share a menu and V’s has a fantastic view of Rothesay harbor. Now I know why. Although the food is good, the service is awkward and the ambience, if you’re not looking out the window, is stark and depressing. If it weren’t for the view, I’d want to give this place 3 stars First the food: I satisfied my seafood craving with the scallops, bacon, and black pudding as a main — 6 big scallops, delicious and well presented. My side, a mixed salad, had a good variety of greens etc. My companion had the Sunday roast as a 2-course meal and enjoyed his main. He ordered a cappuccino to go with his pudding, but it never came. We waited and waited, with no attention from the server, not even to present the bill, and finally gave up and we to the bar counter to pay. Our arrival was even more awkward and off-putting. After climbing the stairs, we saw no indication of a restaurant. Instead, there was a man sitting at a table with what appeared to bunch of receipts and a woman in an office behind him. She summoned a colleague to greet us, but instead of taking us to a table, she escorted us to a lounge packed with heavy dark seats. We had no idea whether we were waiting for a table or for how long, but it was Sunday evening with few choices so we stuck with the strange (to our ways) program. Drinks were ordered and brought, and we made our selections from the menu. Finally, with some relief, we were conducted to our table — getting our first view of the unadorned dining room — and were delighted to find that our table was by the window. The food came out immediately after that. How hard would it have been for the server to ask whether we wanted to wait in the lounge — a very unappealing room — or enjoy our drinks at our dining table without having to move in the middle of our visit? I think there is a training issue here, but also an overall lack of attention to the ambiance. It’s not just about the view.

My partner and I visited this restaurant after a long walk to Port Banatyne and back. In all honestly it was one of the few places that were open on a Sunday and we wanted to enjoy the beautiful view it had on offer. When we went upstairs we were greeted by a young lady who asked us to have a seat as she needed to set the table. We obliged and waited. Then she proceeded to bring the menu’s over to us while still sitting in the waiting area. After having a look she then cane over and asked if we’re ready to order yet (we found this very unusual as we were still in the waiting area and not in the reastarant itself. She took out order and our menus and after pouring out drinks asked if we would like to follow her through. We did and there was only one other couple in the whole place seated at the table next to where we were seated. This was all a bit odd. Why so much of a wait when it wasn’t busy and all of the tables there were set. Anyway the food we had was delicious and plentiful and the view was fab so we still enjoyed our time there.

Some of us chose festive menu, starters fine but presentation of mains made a dogs dinner look impressive. I had the haddock in a herb batter, fish covered in batter with a massive helping of the batter on its own. Looked awful, taste not much better. I left it well alone. One friend got vegetarian platter but items missing from it and had to ask where they were. Her starter was burnt. I chose the cheese board. Massively overpriced for 3 minuscule bits of cheese, 4 crackers , one of which was the size of an old penny. Oh and a ew grapes and home made chutney which was just spiced raisins.

We had a very good fish stew, although as it was listed as bouillabaisse, it was somewhat lacking in seasoning; in particular, it lacked garlic and orange peel. Victoria's restuarant is the upstairs of Ghillies, a trendy bar on the seafront of Rothesay where they also serve food. Upstairs there is also a trendy looking eating area to the right, and there is what looks like a slightly more dated but still decent function suite to the left where my fiancé plonked himself down at a window seat and announced he was happy to stay there, as when we came upstairs despite shouting 'Hello?' a few times (on a Wednesday night) there were no staff in sight to guide us one way or another and his choice was fine by me.

Only booked the table for 6 at 10:00 on the required day, so wasn't expecting the greatest of position or service. How wrong could I have been!!!! Arrived 30 mins before our 16:30 reservation time, but this wasn't an issue. We were ushered to a relaxing lounge area with fabulous views over the esplanade and the bay. Pre dinner drinks were ordered and given the menus for our perusal. Bang on 4:30, we were shown to our table. Surprisingly, we were the only diners in the restaurant, and we were allocated the prime position in the bay window, with "jaw dropping" views over the previously mentioned areas. Starters we ordered with main courses, and these arrived shortly after. The entire eating experience was incredible. Our gluten free birthday girl was delighted with her choice and so to was everyone else. Quality and quantity are seldom seen together, but not here. All diners were adults, but all struggled to finish their meals. The relaxed atmosphere was appreciated by all, with attentive staff, that nothing was too much trouble. Finally, the bill. 6 diners, huge meals, views to die for, wonderful staff, total???? less than £100, thats what I call excellent value for money. Many thanks to all concerned, we will return again soon.

Arrived without a booking - no problem. Waitress took our coats - very traditional! She had us sit down to order food and enjoy a pre-meal drink. Then we were invited to the table, she carried the drinks on a tray. Food was delicious. Could fault any of it. Made sure we tipped them on the way out. If you are staying in Rothesay, this is the place to eat!

A group of 10 of us decided to eat here recently. Our orders were taken in the adjacent upstairs lounge by a rather brusque waitress who called out 'Starters' then 'Mains' as she recorded our choices. We were soon showed to our table in the restaurant which was rather crowded that night. My starter was whitebait, a generous portion which was delicious. Several different main courses had been ordered, mine was Beer Battered Haddock, which came with a small portion of chips and side salad. The fish was ok, although the batter was quite hard and one end was quite dark.I have had better. In all, an average meal which could have been much better. The restaurant seems rather "tired", but then so does much of Rothesay.

having eaten in the bar below called "Ghillies" we decided to eat upstairs in the evening. Pleasantly welcomed and seated in a waiting area to order drinks and select our meal requirements. once we had agreed we were escorted to the dining room. Nice light and airy and a great view over the Winter Gardens. Slightly more formal. Service was a little slow but served really hot. Seared scallops and Stornoway black pudding with a centrepiece of a prawn cocktail on a bed of dressed salad. The vegetarian option was a chic pea and cauliflower tagine. Superb was the comment from my wife ! The waiting staff were attentive and friendly. Not a resident but enjoyed our visit.

Had a lovely meal from an extensive menu with something for everyone. Restaurant was busy (always a good sign) and we had to wait but it was worth it. As well as the good food there are great views out over the bay.

We stayed in Rothesay for a few days. It is a fairy typically old Victorian British seaside destination past its sell buy date unfortunately. We are always on the look out for good places to eat and this seemed a reasonable choice. We were particularly attracted by the sea food as we had been having some sensational stuff on the west coast of Scotland. Unfortunately this was not one of them. Service was friendly and excellent and the food in general was OK but the seafood was all overdone and chewy. Maybe the chef was having an off night but it was a disappointment when the seafood in the area is usually excellent.

A quite extensive traditional menu. Decent sized portions. Need to offer a much better range of vegetables and vegetarian dishes. Service good. Lovely view onto the Winter Gardens with sea beyond, sadly spoiled by seagull poo splatted down the large windows - which was still there 2 days later.

Our B&B did not cover an evening meal and so we picked Victoria's as it was one of the few restaurants open in Rothesay at this time of year on a Sunday. The food we had was average, hot and reasonably well presented but with little finesse. Service being similar. The views from the upstairs windows over the harbour though were good.

Had a lunch in the restaurant with my parents while in Rothesay a couple of weeks ago. My parents had lunch here before and they enjoyed it. The restaurant is very nice and tidy. The service was excellent. I had a plate of scampi and my parents both had fish. The portions were plentiful and the food was superb. The restaurant is a lot quieter than downstairs which was nice. Wonderful experience and lovely food.

Called into the Victoria Restaurant for lunch on a late summer day trip to Rothesay, weather was excellent and we saw Bute at its best. The dining room of the Victoria has great views over the Bay and retains that touch of quality that was more evident in the Rothesay of the past.Dining room was not busy and we were served by a very pleasant lady who hailed from Samarkand, she had taken the "Golden Road" to Rothesay.Had the best plate of Cullen Skink I have ever tasted , piping hot , creamy and full of flavour, served with fresh warm bread , an absolute treat.rate this eatery as excellent and will certainly be returning

We have just had lunch at The Victoria and it was lovely. We had a look upstairs but chose to sit downstairs as the atmosphere was better and there was no one else upstairs. It was quite early though. The menu has something for everyone and the food was good quality, and the service was good too.We had been disappointed with many of the places we had eaten at on Bute so it was nice to find somewhere decent and clean with good food. We will be returning to try the evening menu later this week!

The experience was insulting. I regretted making the decision to go upstairs so I could experience the view. I was the only customer. They made me wait for a table, then seated me at a very sloped table just inside the doorway, no view except the view of all of the empty tables in the part of the room with a view. When I asked to be moved, the waitress huffed that those were for 4 people. I told her I would move the minute even one additional customer came in. The food was prompt, but mediocre. I left most of I. Honestly I couldn't have been less comfortable.

Although we had not made a reservation we were welcomed , shown to a tasteful lounge bar , given menus and generally looked after in a friendly manner.Shown to a table in the bright , well furnished dining room overlooking the town's magnificent gardens. The food was very good served in a relaxed , comfortable atmosphere. The menu offered a good choice to suit most tastes with main courses from under a tenner upwards. The portions were generous. The wine was also keenly priced.A definite must for a return visit.

This is an eight-table, split-level restaurant on the first floor of the Victoria Hotel. The upper level has a widow across one side giving a wonderful view of sea and mountains. The accent is on seafood and the restaurant caters both for those like myself having three-course meals and people who have just popped in for fish and chips and a pint of lager. My food on the two evenings I dined here was superb. Service was characterful, running the gamut from highly professional through brusque and unfriendly to congenially clueless. Highly recommended!

Visited for breakfast, dog friendly table at window which was ideal as was nervous of the seagulls near the outside seating. Breakfast items were good quality, especially bacon and sausage (Callghans Butchers think it said) all very much enjoyed. Only feedback would be the tiny toilet that is a challenge to move around in as it is so narrow and small this won't be accessible for all.
