No staff to serve. Dirty tables. Customers eventually cleaning own table/removing glasses. Rude staff. Prices inflated. Same bottled drinks £6 cheaper for two in burnside. And save £5.60 in fiddlers. Avoid. We had planned to have food and meet more friends her but left. Bar staff were fed up, likely understaffed, probably not their fault, but very rude.

This pub has many good things going for it. On a visit to Campbeltown this week I'd say it is the best pub I have found with the best atmosphere. It's busy and popular with tourists who visit the town. The food was good, and the pub has a nice range of international beers (but expect at least the prices I would pay in the centre of Edinburgh where I live). I couldn't find good marks for the service though. It visibly seemed to be a bothersome for the young waiter, to bring out Cutlery which was not initially with the meal. Was I supposed to eat the meal with my fingers?

Went in for lunch yesterday, buffalo chicken burger and chips was very nice indeed, I enjoyed it, my wife enjoyed her fish and chips, missing a star for the girl serving behind the bar who is miserable, no customer service skills and spends all the time on her phone. Expensive but, Campbeltown seems to be expensive everywhere, think because it is so remote here that people have no choice but to pay the high prices, OK ripping off the tourists but I feel bad for the locals

Two of us visited for food midday midweek food a few months back. We got the ribs and they were fatty, grisly and bones were shattered so had to chew very carefully. We couldn't finish the meal and left shortly after which was disappointing. We then went to black sheep on a later date, we went and stood at end of the bar and waited for 10min. The barmaid did not acknowledge us once. Someone approached bar at opposite end after us waiting and was served immediately, then patrons already at bar were served and still we received no service. We left without service. We won't be coming back to The Royal. Terrible customer service and experience.

I'm guessing this must be a really awful place to work in... The staff were so miserable (a smile, a hello, a thank you... Really doesn't cost anything)... The place didn't even look that busy, I dread to think what it's like on a busy day! Making one latte seemed like a massive task for the bar staff. I even brought the empty saucer/cup back to the serving area, not a single thank you or smile... Cheer up! Is it really that bad to work here?!? Great shame as the seating and decor were really nice, just the service completely let the place down. 2* only becuase the seating area was nice, would've been 1* otherwise.

Then turned out the pub is not dog friendly- although listed as such (and we were directed there by a cafe who were not dog friendly). Made our apologies and sat outside. Asked for a water bowl for the dog. Then had to ask for water!!! Hard work but the Irn Bru was excellent! Nice interior and clean toilets and I am sure it is much better in the evening.

UNBELIEVABLE "SERVICE"! I entered the pub at 8:15 pm and asked if I could still get some food. The barman said that he will have to check as the kitchen closes at 9!? He then poured 2 beers for some of the 4(!) people sitting at the bar. After 3 minutes with me standing in front of him, he finally called the kitchen and told me that I can get food and handed me the menu. I had a quick look and told him what I wanted to order. He said he would have to finish pouring the beers first and then come back to me. After 5 more minutes (still standing right in front of this person) I left this place.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.
