Had high expectations for food after reading reviews, however, left sorely disappointed. Staff are absolutely lovely, friendly and good banter. The pub itself is traditional and has a fantastic atmosphere! A 2 piece band called Atlantic Reel were playing for a few hours and were really really good! Three of us had food and have to say the steak pie wasn’t good. Lots of meat but not a drop of gravy, with a puff pastry lid. It was so dry I couldn’t eat it. How the chef thought that was acceptable to send out to a customer is beyond me! Buttermilk chicken burger was dry and burnt and very greasy in a soggy untoasted bun - ate half of it and left the rest. Coleslaw and salad was good but you can’t go wrong with that! Hopefully the chef was having an “off” day as we would return for the atmosphere but definitely not the food!!

HIGHLIGHT of our wee monthly trip to Oban is usually a nice wee luncheon in one of the main Street's bars or restaurants... HOWEVER... In checking with my son who has friend in the town, he advised Markie Dans... If I'd a penny for everytime I've driven PAST it on way in or out of the town I'd be a rich man... SO... lovely atmosphere on entry, both my wife and I were greeted warmly... initial seat at table in main room... However a booth became free soon after, so a switch over... lovely... Ordered the steak pie and chips and veg on advice from staff... WOW! huge portion.. chips to die for BUT! Steak Pie with huge pastry crust was simply the best I've ever tasted... MOIST, TENDER and HUNNERS of it and thre gravey!!? I wish I could get a tub of the stuff... My Wife also enthused about her Haddock Thermador... which she finished... she rarely finishes a meal...ANYWHERE! I have no words to describe it all... :-) see above... We won't need to go anywhere else as long as Dans Keep their young chefs... totally stars!!

Food was actually quite good & loved the atmosphere and staff. However, my friend & I ended up with food poisoning for the full next day. We ate the haddock & chips + the scallops (assuming it was the latter). Told a couple locals about our experience & they said "ah yeah that's not where you want to be eating seafood." I would still recommend, given this word of caution.

The ambiance and drinks are stellar, draft beers selection is nice, and the fish and chips were great. I recommend staying away from the seafood. We got the scallops, and believing that because we were in a port town that they would be good. We were wrong. Looks nice and I would definitely go there to drink beers in the evening. We went here to eat. Staff was very friendly, but the wait for the food took a very long time, the air conditioning was on loudly, which made it very cold everywhere, and there was a lot of staff flying everywhere and guests walking past a lot. This made it really too busy to have a chill meal. Of course you can expect some liveliness in a pub, but this was simply a bit too intense for us. Possibly also because it was a Friday evening and the nightlife crowd was gathering.

I haven't tried this type of overfried hamburger before. It goes beyond the scale, that is, it is so baked that it crunches in the mouth, of course once you bite it. Obviously someone forgot about frying. It is tasty, but difficult to obtain. The fish... well we had to wait patiently for it, we happened to eat the hamburger, which was not very edible. Two beers were drunk and suddenly, unannounced, by surprise, without warning, the waiter announced that they had forgotten about the fish, but now they could serve it. We politely thanked him, but no. We must have been unlucky. It's hard to say. In all honesty, we should add that we did not pay for this hamburger, which may indicate that it was a coincidence and not the standard of the place.

I entered the pub just as it opened on Sunday, so plenty of seating was available. The young barkeep instructed me to “Take any table, we’ll get menus to you.” After about 10 minutes, my husband joined me at my table and I mentioned that the group that sat down after me had already been approached by waitstaff. My husband raised his index finger to try to get the attention of a young waiter who was walking past and studiously avoiding making eye contact. The waiter came over and gruffly berated him, telling us that the previous night he’d not served any of the people who called him over like that. He had such an attitude that after we placed our food and drinks order we both Googled “is an index finger hand signal offensive in Scotland?” Apparently not. Turns out the waiter was just surly. I ordered the scallops in a blue cheese sauce, but they arrived with garlic butter. That was probably a better choice, the blue cheese would have overwhelmed them. They were very tasty, but the scallops had not been freed from the shell, and I was surprised to have to cut them myself. The sweet potato soup of the day was excellent, however my onion ring order was forgettable-- they were factory produced, recently emerged from a frozen bag. My husband had the sourdough baguette with chicken mayo filling, and the soup from the Light Lunch menu, and really enjoyed both. The food was good and the menu had some nice offerings… but the service was mediocre. Actually, no, the service was bad, the place seems like it is run by children, and one with an immature attitude. Too bad the adults were not in charge of lunch on a Sunday.

The pub itself was great. We went in due to the selection of whisky being served. However, despite having a massive whisky list, having someone employed who openly says "oh you guys again, right point to them on the menu and I'll find them" and then later say "I don't know anything about whisky" doesn't bode well, hence the lower service score.

We went to Waterfront Fishouse on one of those stormy evenings with lashing horizontal rain and raging seas crashing over the sea wall, so would have been happy just to get inside anywhere. But WF did not disapppoint. It has a basic décor with the feel of a traditional seaside eatery, where the food is by far the main attraction. As starters we had a platter of oysters (some grilled, some raw) that were much appreciated, plus a house salad. As mains we ordered deluxe fish and chips (haddock, sea bass and king prawns), sea bass fillets and vegetarian ravioli stuffed with exquisite pumpkin puree and laced with a smoked cheese/chestnut sauce. Everything was well prepared and tasty. We left feeling well fed and with warm feelings.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.
