The owner was very happy to have our little cross-terrier in (she is very quiet) and ourselves on Saturday morning. The five item breakfast is very good and very reasonably priced. So good we went back on Sunday morning but were sad to find it was not open although it was supposed to be open from 9am. Nevermind we had a good meal anyway the day before.

We've tried so many places in Oban for a good, straightforward breakfast - and the '5-items' at Carolyn's is easily the best. The best quality 'cafe' bacon, black pudding and sausage in the town. It's quiet, comfortable, music but not too loud, a real relaxing pleasure all round. Efficient and friendly service without the forced jollity that can wear thin. We'll make this our 'local' breakfast treat.

On a cold morning this was the only place we could find that would allow us inside with a small dog. Friendly service, good coffee and good value. We were refused access by several places that were empty. Seems they like to cut their nose off to spite their face. Some even said that dogs were not allowed in by law which of course is nonsense. Like a lot of other retired people we have a dog, we also spend most of the year travelling around the country and spend a lot of money on food and drink.

It had been a rainy day exploring Oban when my husband and I turned up a small alley and discovered Carolyn's. Inside were several tables with people enjoying a late lunch. The staff greeted us immediately and said we could sit where we liked. I ordered a bacon lettuce and tomato toastie, and he ordered the steak and onion toastie both of which came with salad and chips. And, both of which were delicious!

Carolyn's is easy to miss, up a narrow street with pedestrian access only (beside the discount shoe shop). It's worth lookinig for if you need a caffeine boost, and better value than some of the more obvious places around the ferry terminal. The tables are tightly packed in so it could get claustrophobic when it's really busy. The staff were very friendly and actually knew how to vary the standard way of making coffee to suit what we had asked for - seems obvious but a lot of coffee places can't cope with this.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place

When open (it has now closed permanently); it was a great wee eating house! We went there often. It will be sadly missed, used by many locals, tourists and organisations as an affordable restaurant.
