Perhaps the wrong platform to mention this but had an enjoyable plate of food back in 2023 but can no longer see their lunch menu. Perhaps they need to update their website so that customers can see what food is available and the prices. All I could see from the website was a virtual tour around the restaurant. Kept clicking on the restaurant menu and nothing came up when I clicked on lunch menus....very weird!

Although the staff and atmosphere were good, we were very disappointed by the mediocre food. Worst of all was the "prawn and smoked salmon cocktail". Tiny prawns and cheap white bread; think Mother's Pride. This is 2024, not 1974! Chicken was bland and my pork ribs, whilst plentiful, were also tasteless. Money wasted.

We stayed for two nights at this pub. So on this review we are dealing with Room 8 and breakfast. Nice fairly large carpark entering to a greeting by staff. Shown to room 8 which is upstairs at the front of the pub. Being told watchnout for the broken floorboards under the carpet as a potential H and S issus. Anyway into room 8. An eves room that on initial inspection looked tired. Then told the lock on the door was a bit faulty and needed some jiggling to lock it. Left alone to settle in . Sadly as I have mentioned the photos will show all. The bed however was cleanand generally ok though the mattress was a bit used let's say. As it's at the front of the building fairly noisy but you can't help that. The place was full so we had to make do really. It also needs a refresh and totally hoover behind the bedside cabinets. Very dusty .. anyway breakfast ok and a good choice and the resturant is clean and tidy. It is in a great location for mid Sussex. But not quite what a lot of the other reviewers have written . Could be just room 8. Would I recommend. Sadly in its non refreshed state no Would I stay again.. possibly yes in another room. Now look at the photos.

Regrettably, despite errors made by other colleagues regarding our order, we encountered discourteous behavior from a staff member when seeking resolution. Must say was very very disappointed with food waiting time was just over half hour hubby ordered prawn and smoked salmon starter with a portion of chips and i had chicken strips with dip with chips . Well took ages to arrive when it did mind came looking every sad a bit over cooked and a small piece of lettuce and chips had very little chicken left in it disappointed . Then hubbies arrived but no chips when asked where chips were girl said oh did you order them she said i will ask chief but we said forget it as we would have eaten before they arrived if they took as long as meal so give it a very low score of 2 for the price

Lovely, relaxed atmosphere, lovely staff. Food always excellent and so well priced. I had the best Ploughmans lunch today {I did say to my husband I may need to request extra bread} Restaurants never give you sufficient bread. The Wheatsheaf supplied lots of lovely ciabbatti slices, more than enough, lots of butter, the lovely ham, cheese, and so much more. I could go on it was all so tasteful and the pork pie was delicious. I would really recommend this, just don't have breakfast! My husband had the Friday Fish and chips which I usually have. Excellent. A simply lovely pub to relax and enjoy a lunch that is consistently good. Thank you Wheatsheaf !

I visited the Wheatsheaf several times over the end of August and beginning of September, 2022, and I will definitely be going back because it ticks all the boxes for me. For a start, the rambling outside space has grouped outside seating for meet-ups of any size. That was perfect in the sunny weather, but it does have patio heating. Lovely, if you're looking for a pub with a garden. It has a car park, but is easy to walk or cycle to from Cuckfield or Haywards Heath. I didn't go into the room with the pool table, but the sprawling dining rooms look look traditional, with deep red and dark wood pub furnishings. The food is excellent value pub food, served by long time staff who care. My brother has a gluten allergy, and so the first meal we shared , we both had fish n' chips with a gluten free batter (light and tasty). The fish was very fresh. I wasn't hungry the second time. and only had the prawn and salmon starter, which was fab. The merlot wine was a lovely smooth and fruity quality -yet not expensive. I visited with a dog, and the pub is incredibly dog friendly. I ate out at other venues in and around Haywards Heath, around my family visit to the area, and the Wheatsheaf was easily the cheapest/best value -nowhere else can compete. I've already recommended it as the place which I'll be going back to.

We couldn't have asked for better when using their delivery service during the COVID lockdown to order Sunday lunch for Valentine’s day. The order was taken efficiently and we were warned they were likely to be busy and the delivery time (1pm) would be approximate. Lunch was delivered 2 minutes before 1pm! The food was hot, well packaged in reusable/recyclable containers, delicious and plenty of it. (The roast potatoes were perfectly crispy and the gravy had a lovely rich herby taste. We ordered two portions of apple crumble, but ate one divided between two of us and now look forward to the other portion tonight!). Well done the Wheatsheaf, and we look forward to ordering in the future.

We had a couple of pizzas too, lots of topping and a thin crispy base. They had pints and drinks to take away if you want. Certainly recommend and nice to support local businesses. We wanted somewhere to stay for a long weekend (3 nights). It needed to be reasonably close to home and not too expensive plus, hopefully, a warm, comfortable place with good food and beer.We got all of that at The Wheatsheaf which we found to be well-run with a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Also, and I think this is a good sign, it was obviously a very popular locals pub.Our stay included breakfast however, we found the food so good and reasonably priced that we had all our meals there. Really, our only niggles were that the mattresses were not very good for us (gave us a bit of backache) and the TV in our room was teeny-weeny with no red button facility. We'll almost certainly be going back.

Vegetables are always beautifully cooked and the plates are always hot. We've had quite a few okay dinners here (our kids like the chicken nuggets), but unfortunately tonight's wasn't. We stayed on to have dessert because there was a rhubarb crumble on the menu, which I love. I was expecting a pink rhubarb filling with its lovely tart taste under a layer of crumble pastry. But when it arrived it was just a big bowl of wet green rhubarb compote with the thinnest sprinkling of a crunchy muesli-type topping. Then I tasted it and nearly gagged - it was the worst rhubarb crumble I have ever tasted. I couldn't eat any more as it was so tart, plus there was hardly a crumble either, and when we told the waiter, the kitchen offered to make some more of the crumble topping (the muesli stuff) but I said no thanks because the filling was inedible. Really disappointing, but then the bill arrived with the crumble still on it, and when we checked that they had meant to leave it on, they said yes because the chef had apparently had no other complaints that night. I was really surprised by their response so won't bother going back. Such a shame.

The meals took 55 minutes to arrive, 20 minutes is OK, 30 minutes is pushing it, but 55 minutes, that's very poor. When they did arrive one meal was hot, the other wasn't. Both meals were frankly poor. The waiting staff were thin on the ground, and were less than helpful when I pointed out that my fish and chips were not hot. To add insult to injury we were then kept waiting another 10 minutes to pay the bill as there was no one at the bar except someone who was too busy talking talking to his mates to take our money. My advice is don't bother, there are plenty of other places to eat and drink in the area.

I received a warm welcome at the bar which was reasonably busy with locals on a Tuesday evening. After that...The room was pokey and benefitted from surround-sound road noise due to single glazing combined with its location being a pavement width from a busy road.Wifi is advertised throughout but this meant "throughout the bar". I should have realised as a lady was using her ipad on the stairs to the rooms when I entered. With a very poor mobile signal compounding the communication issue I wouldn't recommend this place if you need to work in your room. Nor does the stool assist you in sitting comfortably to try unsuccessfully to connect to wifi.On the plus side, my room was warm... but the bar was draughty and cold, both in the evening and at breakfast.I had a choice - cold with wifi or warm and wifi-less! On the plus side there are a number of real ales to try whilst you are working in the bar.The electric shower over the bath was from the 70's. If you like cold with an unpredictable burning blast regardless of where the dial is pointing, then this is the shower for you and you should book room 9. If not, take a bath. The thin walls, made apparent throughout my stay as I shared my neighbours' conversations, would not have prevented next door's occupants from hearing my gasps as the water temperature fluctuated between its two extremes. The staff were very nice (too young and nice to feel like complaining to) but the rooms need an update.

The roast dinner I had was average and (what I presume is) the manager's knowledge of whether allergens were present in the food was poor / lacking. Despite speaking to them over the telephone before booking and noting at the point of booking. He could not even tell me the ingredients of the bread and made an unhelpful/sarcastic comment that he could call 'the bakery' but they would likely be closed. Well yes, at 8.30pm I imagine they would be. I was excited to finally eat at the only pub in the village that I hadn't yet visited but I won't be returning any time soon.

I sadly cannot recommend the old and tired pub the Wheatsheaf Inn as a place to eat. My 3 friends and I visited the Wheatsheaf Inn for a Sunday lunch. The bar was unsightly cluttered with dirty collected glasses that the staff had no qualms keeping on display. We ordered food at 3pm and after a lengthy 1 hour wait 3 of 4 meals were served, minus condiments and vegetables. After asking the condiments and vegetables arrived, sadly after another 5 minute wait. When asking where the 4th meal was I was met with a blank/rude/who cares face from a female staff member. The 4th meal eventually arrived 15 minutes after the previous 3. The staff simply informed our group the 4th meal had been forgotten by the chef. Sadly the weekend chef refused to speak to our group, instead we were greeted by the off duty manager who was extremely apologetic and understanding, he agreed to refund 50% of our food bill.

The menu had a wide choice to suit everyonethe service could not be bettered, and the whole experience was most enjoyable. We will be returning very soon..

We visited Cuckfield on Sunday to take my mother out to lunch; normally we go to the White Harte or the Rose and Crown, but it was after 3pm so rather late. The publican at the White Harte recommended we try the Wheatsheaf. The pub has gone through a number of owners over the years, and has never quite shaken its reputation as an 'estate agents' establishment, but we were well fed and watered, and the service was both friendly, efficient and personal. The waitress was happy to serve my mother a child's portion of roast beef, where many establishments might have insisted on an adult's share at twice the price. Both of our boys also ate roast beef, a firm favourite, and declared the meat to be tender and delicious. One small niggle: my plate was delivered without roast potatoes, but they were promptly brought, and then the remaining vegetables only arrived after a further 10 minutes when we were already well into our munching. There was plenty of food once the veggies had arrived, and a good selection of broccoli, parsnips, carrots, cauliflower cheese, swede and cabbage. Probably because we were so late, they were suffering a bit from over-cooking, but were otherwise tasty. The boys both had icecream and sorbet, which went down well. The whole was reasonably priced and we would definitely return for another meal.

My partner and I have started going to the Wheatsheaf pub every Tuesday night for the quiz. We don't live in Cuckfield so were wondering whether it would be friendly or not. We needn't have worried. The atmosphere is lovely, warm and welcoming. The staff go out of their way to make you feel at home and comfortable. We haven't eaten there yet on a Tuesday night but I have to say they are absolutely buzzing and the food looks and smells delicious. All the plates that go back are empty. The dessert sizes are big so make sure you have lots of room left for one. The prices are good and nobody is rushed through their meal like in so many other places. Give it a try

We booked for a table of 12 for a Saturday night at 20:00 hrs. Sadly we were running late so phoned and advised we would be more likely to be after 20:30 hrs. The staff were so lovely saying as long as we were there as soon as we could it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived around about 20:45 and other than given the information that there was another similar sized party about to order so if we wanted our food first to get our orders in asap. The food was of a lovely standard especially for the price and the two young ladies that waited on us for drinks and food were lovely, with smiles and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

Visited here after a poor experience at another pub. Despite the car park looking pretty full we were able to secure a table. My husband and I opted for the mixed roast (beef and pork). When the plates arrived we were both impressed with the portion size and appearence of lunch. The vegetable selection was excellent, tasty too. Flavoursome gravy and hot plates completed a very good experience. There is a wide choice of desert, children's menu and pretty decent wine list. I also noticed that coffee was served in good sized cups. Go there hungry as the portion sizes are generous! Decent service by pleasant friendly staff, will definately return.

We live fairly locally and always go out for Mother's Day with all the family so we have been to most places around where we live.We booked here as they were offering a varied menu (not everyone wants a roast dinner) and also it wasn't sittings which seemed to be popular in other pubs. Our table was in a side area which was perfect as we were a large party of 8 adults, a child and a baby...the requested highchair was present. There was a good choice of food, together with indications for gluten free choices, which was helpful for one of our party. Considering how busy they were, everyones's food arrived fairly quickly on warm plates, with a good selection of vegetables. Several choices of desserts were offered..again nicely presented. All in all we were extremely pleased with our lunch, reasonably priced and nice friendly staff. Everyone agreed that they would definitely visit again in the future.

We booked our usual Christmas day meal as past years it has been so good. But we have to say the standard of meal this year was quite poor. We had Beef for main with not a roast potatoe in sight nor a Yorkshire pudding. What they did serve had so much garlic in it that I could not eat it but what was it? The starter was very dry best part of the meal was the sweet.Service was very good but such a shame the day was let down by the poor meal. Will we book for next year?

We have eaten at the Wheatsheaf over a number of years and in the past have always found the food good or excellent. Our last visit with friends was not so special. We ordered our main courses only to find that some were not available. This was early on a Friday evening and it wasn't particularly busy. The food when it arrived was ok but nothing special to look at and not particularly tasty either. The deserts however were fine. Service was slow considering the numbers of people eating. They do have a good range of beers and wines so in future maybe we will go for a drink and eat at home or elsewhere in the village. A pity because a couple of years ago it was in my opinion the best eating place in Cuckfield.

I booked this restaurant some 7 days before, and on arrival we surprised they had no booking. The entrance into the restaurant was poor with people smoking right by the door. this was enough to put one off, Once in the bar, I found the lighting was poor and had a lingering smell of not being aired. The persons who had been outside smoking came in to get drinks ,alas the smell of smoking was dreadful. We were offered a table anywhere, and we chose one in the bar, the staff member said there was a party of 12 persons there, so we then were offered a quieter part which we took. The table need to be wiped and the menu was offered, we were told that they had no roast's, gravy and in fact not much left at all. To say the least we were very disappointed by the service, and the very poor menu. We will not be eating here again.

Very good standard of food - some pub classics, some slightly more adventurous dishes but all very well done.Would recommend.

Whilst staying at the Inn on business I popped into the bar for the Quiz night and a bite to eat. The quiz was light hearted and good fun. I sampled the real ales which were all well kept particularly the Hobgoblin and the Pedigree albeit our southern cousins have yet to learn how to put a head on a pint !. I ate the scampi and chips which was enjoyable. The following evening I took advantage of the curry night which was very tasty. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

We visited here one Friday lunch exclusively on the recommendations of Trip Advisor contributors and we were not disappointed – thank you! The food was just brilliant. We both had the prawn and smoked salmon starter – very generous helpings and delicious (there was almost enough for a main course). Beer battered fish was our proper main course – again, clearly fresh fish and excellent in all respects. Pudding was equally well presented and tasty. All this supported by a good selection of real ales and attentive service made it a visit to remember. The pub has a large car park, with the only downside being that the disabled parking bays are located at the farthest point from the main entrance. There is also a nice garden with seating and a pleasant covered patio area. We would have no hesitation in visiting again - very highly recommended.

Travelling through Cuckfield on our anniversary, we needed dinner before heading home, so plumped for The Wheatsheaf Inn after reading good reviews. Several tables had already been reserved as it was pub quiz night. When asking at the bar we were lucky enough to be shown to one free table beside the bay window. There was a good selection of dishes on the menu, most came with chips so I chose the shepherds pie as I fancied something healthier. Our food arrived in good time, especially considering how busy the pub was. Large portions and plenty of veg - just what we needed! There was a warm atmosphere and the staff were both friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit again when next in the area.

Visited here for Sunday lunch and would never return again as both food and service were below my expectations. The food was really quite terrible. Chicken was dry, beef was extremely well done and vegetables tasteless. The ironically named "super roast" was swimming in gravy, the lamb and the beef completely indistinguishable from one another. Both extremely overdone and swamped in a sea of gravy. The food took over an hour to arrive and was extremely disappointing when it did. Lots of tables waiting endlessly for their food. Pretty sure the couple next to us ordered before us but were served after. The cost of a roast here is more than the talbot (just) and £1.50 less than the Rose & Crown. The Wheatsheaf seriously need to up their game or reduce their price as the food and service bears no resemblance to the competition on their doorstep. More frustrating was the service which was abysmal. I would not have reviewed at all were it not for the bad service. We had two extremely rude waitresses. I don't know what has possessed either of them to go into a customer service industry. Perhaps had we one angry/grumpy/rude waitress I would have put it down to an off day but two suggested it is more systemic and cultural. Example 1:The extremely dry roast chicken comes whole as per the menu. We asked for it to be plated as it comes on a board for you to carve which is quite impractical on a small table for 6. First request we were told flatly "no". Second request we were told "I can ask the Chef but he will just say no"Third request the manger pops over and sorts it out no problem. By the way, "carve" is interpreted as "cut bird in half and plonk on plate". Example 2:The stuffing was missing. When we asked we were told it didn't come with stuffing and we must be confusing it with the pork (there was no pork on the menu). When this was raised they checked with the chef who confessed there was no stuffing in the building. Still with no apology that our meal had parts missing, we used the lack if stuffing as a reason why they should execute our outlandish request to have the chicken on a plate. Example 3:One guest asked if more vegetables were coming and was told yes. Then no. The waitress who came to say "no" was so hostile and didn't care to ask the guest simply if she had everything she needed. Needless to say, and based on chicken gate and stuffing gate, she did not ask for any more of the mash (nor was she invited to and I think the waiting staff would have responded with trademark rage). I'm not sure if it was sweet potato or swede as we were only given a thimble full for 6 people which is why she followed up on the veg. Had the waitress simply asked if we had everything we needed, our guest would have just asked for more mash. So. The food is terrible. It doesn't come with everything advertised on the menu and heaven forbid you ask them to do anything or get anything for you. I mean, what did we think this place was - a restaurant?! I am still reeling that I had to pay money for this experience. I complained whilst there about the service so this is not the first time they will hear this. No one bothered to ask how our meal was. Presumably this was because they know the answer. If it was just bad food I wouldn't have written a review. It is a local business and I like to support them. But this was a pretty shocking experience with no redeeming features...

Had Sunday lunch with family which included my 18 month old son. The food was ok, nothing amazing in my opinion. But now the spoiler. Took my son outside after mains to stretch his legs. Went to the top garden area where he trod straight in a massive pile of dogs poo. On looking, there was about 8 identical piles of steaming mess, and I would suggest this is from the owners of the pub, given the deep "gruffs" coming from a dog behind the fence to the rear of the premises. We went in for dessert but was ruined by the unmistakable whiff of dogs doo, even though I had cleaned up the best I could. Shame on you Wheatsheaf. I emailed you privately to offer you the chance to explain about this. Two weeks later, not even a reply. Hence this review. Good establishments face up to their criticism, not bury their heads in the sand.

Met friends here for lunch on a dark dank day, glad to get inside where we were welcomed by smiling, friendly staff and invited to choose our table. Drinks orders taken and brought swiftly to our table whilst we checked the menu. Good choice of food, could have anything from a snack to a 3 course meal. 2 of us had a bowl of lovely warming soup served with croutons and ciabatta, followed by (respectively) large and lovely fish and chips, a sustaining burger and a garlic and herb chicken breast, both served with chips and salad. 2 others had dessert, cheesecake and bread and butter pudding, all described as excellent. There was also available salad platters and a good choice of fish dishes, plus scrummy-sounding vegetarian choices. Could have chosen almost anything on the menu and am sure it would all have been enjoyable. There is plenty of parking outside the Inn which makes it a convenient choice too.
