Wheatsheaf in Canterbury

Visit date: 4th March 2024 Weird small interior. Friendly staff but inattentive to tables. Employ waiting staff please. Some staff walked away while I was talking to them so they only heard part of what I said. Assumptions made about ice with regards to my drink order. This meant I had to go to the bar to get it corrected which means having to wait for staff to be available. I didn't go initially because I could see there's no staff at that particular section of the bar and had to drink my Coca Cola without ice. £2.95 for a small bottle of coke and the fridge clearly isn't even kept cold enough. Drink wasn't cold enough and needed ice. Tiny glass given for tap water. No jugs of water. Chicken lime tacos were pretty bad. Not much chicken, gross tortilla, clearly very cheap quality ones, and just overall bad. I think it was £6. Go to Wahaca or El Pastor in London for amazing tacos. A similarish price as at this pub. Katsu curry had way too much salt. Tasted like a jar bought curry. Tons of chips on the plate. Not much rice. Dissapointed. No receipt given. Staff didn't even ask if I want a receipt. So I don't have a photo of the receipt. No photos of food because my phone was low battery, staff kindly charged it for me behind the counter while I ate. No super Fast charging sadly so a full charge takes 3 hours. Go to London to eat good food. Kent has very few good places to eat out. This pub has pretty terrible food.

90 minute wait on a weekday lunchtime... I think not.

Food was good, but took a long time to come, good value first visit, try again to see if it was a one off.

Typical pub grub, lots of tvs with sport on, so great if that's your bag, order at the bar for food

We went on a Thursday evening and waited around 30 minutes for food, we had to sit outside because of our dog and asked for the heating to be put on multiple times. It was finally put on once we’d finished our meals. Food was almost inedible and service was slow, the manager told us this was because they were low staffed.

Standard but well cooked tied house pub food. A bit noisy for me and the windows needed a clean. The rest of the building was smart and probably recently refurbished

We went to get food for a birthday celebration and it was a shambles from the beginning! Walk through the door and there’s no sign of organisation staff seemed very distracted by the locals! Taken to our table and just left there was local children literally running all over the place playing hide and seek in the restaurant with no care for those eating meals ect. Staff did nothing about the matter and then we saw the children and the locals going into the kitchen and behind the bar! And the staff just let them do it!! Food could have been better salad felt like it had been sat cut up for days and the chicken was very dry on both dishes. Overall not a very happy visit today and will not be returning anytime soon!

16/3/23 2 x Fish and chips for £10.99 very nice and good value.The pub is very ready for a refurb. 8/6/23 No fish and chips again. This is a recurring problem. They were month's without a fish frier before the financial year change. Not good. 2 meals for £10.99 not bad though. 7.9.23 Once again the fish frier is out of action. Its only lasted a few months. But they have a notice up saying refurb coming soon. Not before time. The frier is out of bounds till the refurb is complete. Two for £11.49, gone up 50p. Still not bad. 18/4/24. Recently refurbed and back under its proper name The Wheatsheaf, nicely done. Light lunches now 2 for £14.99, 'but' because that offer is a discount meal, I'm not allowed to use my Defence Discount offer. Wether I'm having a full price meal, or a discounted one, I'm still a Veteran and should be afforded the extra discount. Not happy. 20/6/24 Light lunches again. The chicken Shawarma ( guess spelling) is very nice, even if the bread base is a bit tough. Steak knife provided to carve it. Still no Defence Discount. Made an earnest complaint about it. 10/10/24 Doesn't open till 12, winter opening hours. I had Scampi and chips. 9 v small pieces of Scampi, but tasted okay. Chips nice and crispy. Husband had Gammon, no moans or complaints, so must have been okay. The photos are of the "Ladies Room".

Waited an hour for our food even though table was booked then told no carrots left staff are lovely just not enough of them getting served was a nightmare

I visited tonight with my wife for the first time. We had a lovely hot well cooked meal and a drink. Extremely friendly staff who provided great service. Food was excellent value for the money and we very much enjoyed our first visit, and we will be returning again.

Ok for a quick meal on the hoof.

service is so slow, waited 15 minutes to be sat and it’s not busy here today at all, waited for 40mins for our food plus drinks, was at the bar for a good 15mins just to put coca cola in a glass. it’s diabolical

Arron what an angel I put my weekend away being worthwhile down to the superb service provided by you and ur team very professional friendly n helpfull seams to work extremely hard I visited Saturday and sunday and the poor man was rushed off his feet venue is lovely very well designed food was excellent probably one of the nicest green kings I've been too 5 stars from me highly recommend

After a long journey wanted to find restaurant with parking. Ordered cod and chips which was excellent fish was cooked perfectly. Staff friendly service good.

Pub was empty at 5pm on a Friday night but still had to wait over 30 mins for food. 3 of us had the Hunters chicken very nice but only about 6 chips so we were all left still hungry. Overall very disappointing. Obviously not enough staff employed as outside tables were never cleared of dishes & glasses. Used to be a favourite of ours but won’t be returning. Returned a week later! Thankfully a much improved experience! Didn't wait long for our food, better portions, which was really good. Tables all cleared, so pleased we gave it another go, think previously they were certainly short staffed.

The Wheatsheaf has been transformed into a welcoming family pub, we went there last night with our dog for dinner and was welcomed from the moment we entered. The restaurant was clean and bright. The Thursday steak deal is excellent and the steak was tender with a good portion of chips. The prices are excellent for the area. Andrew the manager was day off but took the trouble to welcome us, all of the staff were attentive and friendly. We look forward to coming back.

Been visiting this week for holiday, we have been in every night. The staff have been so accomodating, so welcoming and friendly. Had dinner this evening, the steaks were cooked to perfection. Came out prompt and hot. Thank you to the staff at The Wheatsheaf for being so lovely.

My partner and I took a local lady who is house bound now her husband had passed away we had a nice meal each and a drink the food came hot we all finnished our meal I Highley recommend the wheatsheaf and will use it again

Regularly come in here- family ordinated, lovely atmosphere, lovely food, and always great service from staff! Would recommend anyone to come here for a lovely day or evening :)

Went in today with family and had a black and blue burger. Was lovely! Service is always lovely from Jade, and Andrew leads the team amazingly. The pub has come on leaps and bounds. Thanks guys! We will be back

Came here a few times before the refurb and gosh it was drab! Andrew and the team have really turned it around, food was great and service with a smile! Will definitely be back.

Food OK. Very loud and full of unruly children running around Pleasant staff. I think the children belonged to the staff at the pub

Food was nice and hot, the hunter chicken was slightly tough, the Mac and cheese was really good. Too much ice in the drinks. Staff were very nice and friendly. Good atmosphere. Might go again.

Great food and so reasonably priced. Kids love the play area and it's lovely now it's been refurbished too.

Just had the worst meal at the wheatsheaf. Paid £97 for 3 adults 2 kids. Waited for 45 minutes and the food was terrible. We had steaks that were dry and tasted of nothing. 8 chips per plate. £2.50 for a scampi topper and you get 4 !!! Totally disappointment. No body asked how our food was. Will not be returning steer clear

Arriving to a semi empty restaurant with an hour before we had to get a train we knew we had plenty of time aslong as we ordered simple food,we ordered haloumi fries a kids burger and chips and a cheese and bacon burger. 45minutes after we were still sitting there waiting. As this was getting so close to our train time I went and asked the gent behind the counter to box it and we will take it with us, he said it was ready but I told him I didn't have time now so please can I take it away, he went into the kitchen and wrapped it in Cling film and put it in a plastic box, i said thankyou and explained that a kids burger and a adult burger shouldn't take that long to which he agreed , i didnt ask for a refund as we was still receiving our food just eating on the go we got to the train station on time for the train luckily as it was only a couple of minutes away and my little one was hungry so I opened her burger which was inedible the bun was burnt on the inside and burger was so small and dry she couldn't eat it. The corn wasn't much better. She did manage to eat the 7 chips that was provided for her in her meal so at least she had something. I had ordered the cheese and bacon burger which looked lovely till I took it out the clingfilm and and yet again the bun heavily toasted to black. And I could snap the burgers in half as that was burnt too. After spending £28 (after blue light discount) on essentially on 5-6 bits of haloumi ,7 chips for my little one and a small portion of chips for me and 3 soft drinks I should have just gone to a chip shop. This was the first time returning here after 7+ years. I thought this would be different with change of management and refurbishment but I won't be returning again.

Wow, I last used the restaurant five years ago, it was poor then and even worse now. Tried it as revamped. Shouldn't have bothered, over priced, laughable quantity, poorly cooked food. It wasn't even busy and took 40 minutes or so to arrive. Asked before, was told, on its way as busy! Others were complaining to. Basically, under staffed and not bothered customer service. Drink wise, good prices but still a pond life hang out.

Venue has been completely remodeled and looks brilliant. Food is still of a good standard at reasonable price. Same with the service. Visited several times and will continue to do so

Been before lovely meal scampi and chips, went on Monday the scampi was cooked in old oil came in a pie dish they said the oil should have been changed but they give it to me like that they did say they are going to take the scampi and fish of the menu but to bring that out don't say much about there chief will not be going back there again.

Fantastic evening watching the advertised Back Street Bloozers Blues Jam with so many talented musicians. 10 out of 10 for allowing them to perform for us all.

Relaxed atmosphere. Staff very polite. Good with our 2 yr old toddler.

Lovely food and great setting. It did take nearly 2.5 hours to get fully served our two courses, but it meant we could enjoy the footy and a few beers, so all good.

Have avoided this establishment after a bad experience years ago but thought we would try again after the recent refurbishment and new landlord and so pleased that we did! Excellent food and service made really welcome and a great atmosphere! Will return again!

Food was good, reasonably priced. Decor good , service great. Big beer garden, covered outside seating area . And dog friendly , couldnt ask for more !

Love this place. I had a magician act to entertain some smalls and utilised the space here and the staff and owners went above and beyond to help with making things run as smoothly as possible for me and the magician. My little also enjoyed playing in the little park play gym they have in their beer garden and the food was supremely delightful. Would totally recommend a visit!

Came here for a birthday, ended up being more people than anticipated and the staff could not have been more accommodating! Cannot believe how lovely and well thought out this pub is, the garden and play area for kids is fantastic, the covered outside with heaters is perfect for all weathers and inside is lovely and cozy! We had such an amazing day, the food is lovely, the kids were happy in the garden and the rounds were really reasonable! Food wise we had everything from steak to nachos, chips & wings and everything was amazing - the chicken wings especially were delicious! Had such a fantastic day and will definitely be back. Thank you to all the staff who also made our day!

Food took about an hour to come out, when it did the kids food was cold, the food is really bad considering the price, its cheap oven food from the supermarket, do not waste your money!

Great lunch ! New menu so I had the flatbread honey halloumi which was delicious and my partner had a cheeseburger which was very tasty and good quality We also ordered a side everything arrived hot to the table and was most appetising Lovely welcome from Andrew who was a great host We will definitely return as the place has a lovely atmosphere now

Called in for lunch, service was slow and the food left a lot to be desired. We had wraps from the lunch menu, very little filling served with a few bits of lettuce and chips were overcooked and boring.

I appreciate there were short staff working but we orders drinks on the app . Waited nearly hour for them went to the bar to ask, no real apology given . Ordered food at the bar . Came out dry and cold. If an app is provided state posters or signs to state not to use when busy. Apps are supposed to be for quick service, anything but. We had two mixed grills the sausages's were over cooked as was all the meat the chicken didn't taste like chicken all very dry...

Waited ages to get served at bar while girl behind chatted to other customers. Finally seated and ordered food. Went to get a drink and was given a glass with lipstick around top. Said to same bar girl the glass was dirty and she turned on me and said I didn’t have to speak to her like that. Apologised and said didn’t mean it to come out like that and was just pointing out it was a dirty glass and just got attitude again. Won’t be visiting there again

Really disappointing. Attended today.with family of 4. Thought it would be nice as we have been many times before. 1st time since it has been re-vamped. Ordered food straight away. Waited over an hour for food to be served. Food arrived luke warm. One meal had pulled pork missing from burger. One dish came without salad. Plates went back to kitchen. Came back out 5 mins later. Had to ask for cutlery as none on table. And no cutlery around to get yourself. Was planning a birthday meal there for a birthday in the summer. Dont think I would think about attending again based on today's visit. No appology for waiting all that time for food to arrive. SHOCKING Service

What a lovely pub , i came in last night with my family to watch the football and catch up and it had a lovely atmosphere . The blonde lady and stocky lad on the bar were polite and attentive throughout with some banter about the footy ! Overall a great nice and thoroughly recommend.

Lovely welcome staff happy all smiling very friendly. Sunday lunch was not good such a shame the veg hard and pre cooked Carrots rubbery thrown together meal turkey salty. Lovely pub your staff make your pub

far to long a wait to get served at the Bar when I was the only Peron at the bar got to be up there with the worst bar service ever

First visit since refurb. Looks soooo much better. Toilets incredible and clean. Food was excellent and staff even when really busy were apologetic for us having to wait to order and very friendly.

Staying locally we looked for a restaurant we could visit with our dog for an evening meal in late April. The Wheatsheaf was only a few minutes walk and we arrived to find the pub was less than half full and there was plenty of room inside. We took advantage of the two main courses for £14.99 deal, although had to pay a bit extra as I had fish and chips - still very good value though. We were even able to order a chicken breast for our dog from the canine menu. Service was good and our food arrived quickly. The staff and local customers were friendly and we enjoyed the food, drink and our visit.

First visit today. Had to kill 4 hours whilst my motorcycle was being serviced. I understand the pub is under new management and has recently been refurbished. Reading some previous reviews I thought I should go to McDonald’s. I’m glad I didn’t. The food and staff were excellent. It was really busy and a nice atmosphere for a lunchtime. A really enjoyable visit and spent a couple of hours relaxing. Would recommend.

We had dinner in this restaurant. The menu is very extensive and the dishes we chose were very tasty. The prices are in the typically English higher price range. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The entire atmosphere is very pleasant. All in all, a visit to this restaurant is highly recommended.

Well what can I say other than "Well done" to the Team Greene king (wheatshief) Whitstable "Great Food" "Trendy Decor" an "Amazing Transformation" and "Such super Friendly Courteous Staff" Definitely will be visiting again as soon! Would recommend to Both Couples and Families alike! 🤗 We both had the Bacon and cheese burger which came with Rosemary and Cracked Sea Salt Skin on fries and onions rings! Plus BBQ sauce! Would definitely Recommend "the best burger I've had in a very long time" 😋

It was eve before bank holiday...very busy and extremely noisy.

Food was warm chicken was dry and hardly any bbq sauce ( we had hunters chicken) my sister sent hers back as there was hardly any sauce. I ate mine as I was hungry but didn’t enjoy it. The menu is very limited unlike previous visits there was a lot more to choose from. There was a couple in the restaurant with a dog which constantly barked at anyone passing by. Not once did they do or say anything to the bloody thing. We left there with headaches. Certainly won’t be going back in a hurry the atmosphere and food has put us off. Don’t understand why dogs are allowed in a restaurant ? I’d avoid this place like the plague now, there are better places to eat.

The Wheatsheaf, we visited the for a birthday meal and a few drinks. This pub has recently been refurbished and looks really nice, staff were really friendly and helpful Now the food is where we were all pleasantly surprised, good pub food of a high standard, pleasing to the eye, Natchos to share as a starter then tasty Stilton burger, wonderful Hunters chicken and beautiful Chicken pie all really tasty. Brownies with clotted cream ice-cream, Eaton mess and fruit crumble with the clotted cream ice-cream. All in all we were very happy and went home with full belly's and we're all looking forward to trying the Sunday roast next time. 5 stars for a proper pub.

Can’t lie. After we booked this meal I read some pretty poor reviews about the place that made me a bit worried. However, have just got home after a really great evening. The service was good; friendly staff and no long waits for the food. The meals were good. In fact the katsu curry was really good! Yes the place was a bit noisy but at least it was busy and had some atmosphere. So we will 100% go again. And soon. Thanks guys.

We had lunch here today with our two dogs. Newly refurbished and very well done. The staff and service was very friendly, lots of meal deals and even a menu for your dogs. Heated outside seating area, smoking area and garden. Will be lovely to visit in the summer. Can't wait to visit again. Thank you.

Absolutely fabulous. Found t by accident on a rainy day out. Dog friendly with a bowl Of fresh water as soon as we sat down and a doggy menu. Food was tasty, delivered hot and with very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend and visit again

Why waste a fortune renovating the pub! The tables were dirty, the staff didn’t seem to notice you were waiting for service. The food was poor. The TV’s were so loud you couldn’t speak to people on your own table.

This was my third visit since the refurbishment and new management, every time the food has been nice, and the staff have all been very friendly and welcoming. We had a little mix up tonight with my fussy eaters food, but as soon as I spoke to the very kind waitress things were sorted out immediately with no fuss. We all left very happy with the service, thank you all 😊

Had a lovely visit today roast dinner was faultless the beef was so good 😊 the kids enjoyed playing in the park area such a lovely pub only downside was the amount of customers that felt it was acceptable to swear at staff I heard 2 people swear at staff which I found disgusting as they were extremely busy and could see they were getting tired 😴 so sad

Generally a nice place. Looks much nicer since it has been refurbished. Staff nice and helpful but clearly understaffed at the time we were there. Food took a long time to arrive and mostly was good (burger was excellent) sadly Hunters chicken was poor...very small piece of dry chicken in congealed sauce and.was missing onion rings. Overall would give it another try despite problems as most of the food was good.

Wouldn’t even give this place the one star. Food was awful from a burnt rock hard burger, to still frozen chips and a gooey rubbery chicken. staff were all over the place, seated us with no menus, not enough seats and no though for a high chair when asked a few times. dogs roaming around the restaurant. Tv levels so high you couldn’t stand a chance talking at your table. Complained about the food and got a refund no questions asked. Very concerning! Disappointed to say the least, we traveled an hour to this place to have a nice meal with my mother and father in law. Won’t be going back there again.

Brilliant yummy meal with great portions, host Andrew was amazing he encouraged me to try the spiced apple cider which was delicious he was very attentive through out our meal super chatty great banter made our visit really enjoyable!

This pub is so better now that they have livened up the place with music and redecorated. It's unrecognisable. There's now a garden area where you can eat comfortably with outdoor heating and tv's.

Food was poor and food already on the floor under table. Kids pizza is a microwave pizza that definitely was microwaved as was soft and floppy. Tacos were over cooked on the tacos, garlic breads were all burnt. Fish was over fried, lasagna wasn't great. Had 6 meals between us all and not 1 was happy with their food. Used to be a regular of ours but since it's changed will never go again

Nice atmosphere and fruendly staff. Food was average but not expensive.

There is a lack of choice on the menu which I was very surprised at as greene king normally have big menus. No big plates anymore. I paid an extra £2 for a tablespoon if that of pulled pork on my nachos. The staff was polite enough but won't be rushing back which is a shame.

Disgusting, don't order a roast dinner !! Cold, over cooked veg. Never go there again
