Wessington Village Chippy in North East Derbyshire

We got a takeaway from here on Friday night with all the family, we had a mixture of cod, chicken and mushroom pie, chicken nuggets, sausage and chips and all of course a chip shop curry sauce! The service was good but it gets very busy very fast. After you have ordered you get a fob that buzzes once your food is ready. It is a very good idea as you can wait outside so it doesn’t get too crowded. The food was 10/10 and well priced. Highly recommend if you are wanting a chippy tea!🍟

What a great traditional chippy! It is only open for a few hours 3 days a week. We have been before and our second visit didn’t disappoint. We don’t live anywhere near but it was well worth the drive and the queue!! And the people in the queue were very friendly and chatty! We had the large fish (cod), regular chips and side which is about £11 each and it was gorgeous! The fish was lovely and fresh and the batter light and crispy. We will definitely be having a drive out again!!

We was recommended this "Chippy" from a friend. So the other Friday evening we gave it a try When you order your food, you are given a pager to let you know when your order is ready which is a very good idea if weather us poor so you can wait on your car On arriving home. We was surprised how fresh the fish was. It was brilliantly white Full of flavour and the batter was excellent. We will definitely be going back again Thank you

Best fish and chips for miles we drive all the way from Langley Mill which takes about 25 minutes but its worth it!

I have driven past this chip shop many times over the years and have always been intrigued to try it. Last night I did and I have to say it did not disappoint!! My partner and I had the small fish and chips with a side. I think it was £8.10 each. There was more than enough. I’m glad we didn’t go large! The cod was chunky and well cooked. The batter crispy and not greasy. Chips were nice as well! Thoroughly recommend. A proper chippy that pretty much does the old school fish and chip stuff…even pickled eggs! Quality!

Excellent quality and well cooked, especially the chips, but just a little on the pricey side. Great location on a summer evening for a fish and chip picnic on the village green.

we think these are the best F&C in the county perhaps the country. We took our Dutch restaurateur guests for a fish supper, they raved about it !!! so now we take all Dutch visitors for "Farmers Fish & Chips" so fresh ,tasty worth the wait.

Passed this quaint blue and white painted village chippy, and doubled back to sample. Excellent quality . Not sure if the separate wrapping of the fish to the chips played a part, but the batter was so lovely and crispy whilst the salt and vinegar could be enjoyed eating the chips ( not lost via evaporation or in the fish). So friendly and welcoming. Marked to memory for next time we are passing.

We were stopping at Crich Lane Farm B&B so decided to pop in for our tea one night. We opted for a small sausage chips and gravy and a small chips large fish and mushy peas. The bill come to just over £10. Once ordered you wait outside until called. All the food was very tasty.

We thought this chip shop was pretty good. Nice fresh crispy and light batter on the fish. Not completely stand out amazing which is why I haven’t given it 5 stars.

Back again for fosh and chips.d. they are the best you can get this side of whitby. Cooked to order the fish is soft and fluffy with a crunchy batter. Only one negative ...theres always a queue.

Decided to have Fish and Chips for our Wedding celebration and Wessington Chippy were great, fabulous service, great price and the food was sensational, everybodycommented on how much they enjoyed the food. The service was superb and thefood was actually delivered to the venue without a hitch and presented well.

I have been going to Wessington Village Chippy for years and have never been disappointed. The food is amazing, fresh, tasty, very well prepared and presented and all for a very good price and in a spotlessly clean area. The staff are all very friendly and well presented, they work hard and go that extra mile in what they do, even at ten minutes before closing they have put on an extra fish cake to cook for my son.

We've been here a couple of times now and never been disappointed- friendly service and great food. Some of the best fish and chips I've had, will be back again soon!!

Called here Friday after work thought I'll try it for a change usually go to frydays at Alfreton ,i bought two haddock a large chips and peas I asked if they could skin one of the haddock's which they did so got them home starting eating and my husband said the fish didn't have much taste to it which I agreed very bland it definitely wasn't haddock and the chips wasn't very nice I think it was the sort of cooking oil they used so I don't think I'll be going there again stick to frydays which the fish and chips are far better just like fish , chips you get at the seaside from Dianne Stevens from Derbyshire

Fabulous perfectly cooked flaky haddock, beautiful tasty chips and great curry sauce (not everyone’s choice I know). Good prices for good food. What’s not to love? Will definitely return 😀

In the area for a week on a family holiday and the kids decided on Fish & Chips on the last night. Arrived at teatime to see quite a number of people standing outside. The chippy is very small and we found out that you place your order, receive a ticket and wait outside til your number is called. The number of locals in the queue says it all.

Initially I was concerned by the large queue, however I quickly discovered this was due to the lovely food, good prices and organised service. Easily coped with our order for 15. Would highly recommend!

Bought my tea here on Friday night, haddock and chips. The haddock was some of the freshest and best I've had for ages. Generous portions at reasonable prices. There was a huge queue so this is obviously a popular place.

While staying overnight at nearby Crich Lane Farm, I decided to call in here for a takeaway. The food was delicious, superbly well cooked, and thoroughly enjoyable. This certainly ranks among the best meals of this type I have had recently.

Couldn't find space to park in Matlock and there were huge queues for fish and chips, then I remembered a little fish and chip shop in Wessington, on my way home to Mansfield. They were the best fish and chips I have tasted for ages. White, fresh, flaky and hot fish and super chips. I had a small fish and small chips (and both were actually quite big) all for £4.40. I will certainly use them again. Wish I lived round the corner from them.

We recently stayed in the area with our caravan and our good friends in theirs. On a previous visit to the area we had heard about the good reputation of this fish and chip shop. So last Thursday evening we decided to have a fish and chip supper. When the men arrived back at the caravan with the fish and chips we realised that we were in for a treat. Well neither my husband or I had ever been presented with a fish of that size, it literally hung over the edge of the large plates that we were eating off. It was most tasty and the chips too that weren't at all greasy. We would certainly visit again when passing through the area. We were all pleasantly surprised at the size of the fish. A most tasty meal in every way. Well done Wessington Fish and Chip Shop.

We don't live local to this chippy, it's about a 15 mile trip, but we frequently do this trip because...

Lovely chips but thought it was very expensive - £12-40 for 3 fish cakes 2 standard chips and 1 carton peas. Stood in queue waiting for order and commented how expensive they were -chap in the queue said they often get their prices wrong -went back in and said I thought i had been overcharged (I made it £7-70 from the price list) the assistant checked it again and this time she made it £8-70 and gave me a refund of £3-70 -£1 short -but I couldn't be bothered to challenge again. When I opened the food I had been given 4 fishcakes instead of 3 and obviously charged for 4 -so I hadn't been overcharged the second time just sold something I didn't ask for or require. Next time I go back I will check the price before I go in and try to have the correct money and I suggest anyone going there does the same - it would also help if we were given a receipt.

Fish and Chips do not come any better than this anywhere in the UK. Batter is thin and crispy and fish are large and always fresh.They deserve the best fish and chip shop award.

A visit here is well worth the wait! There's always a queue but the food is freshly cooked to order. We always have fish without batter and it is beautiful! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble! I've stood out in the rain many a time queueing and I wouldn't do it anywhere else. Treat yourselves and you won't be disappointed.

There are not many good chip shops left. This is definitely one of them You can tell its good because you actually eat it all instead of throwing half of it away

We go to this chip shop every few weeks for a Friday treat but tonight it was disappointing. The batter on the fish was under cooked and soggy. The chips were not as nice as normal. Maybe an off night? Will give them another chance before changing chippy :)

Our family party of 17 stayed in the area, weekend of 28 October 2016. We pre-ordered a few days before. Our order was ready for us to collect on time, spot on,the team at Wessingtons were so very obliging and helpful and our fish and chip meal was thoroughly enjoyed by us all. Would certainly recommend this chippy. Thank you once again.

Wessington Chip Shop has had a deserved reputation for a number of years for its limited opening hours but... when it is open... it's a must to go and get the take-away fish and chips!The reputation is still valid. We went to get takeaways to carry back to where we were staying on a Thursday night in the summer and were number 13 in the queue, out of the door and almost round the corner!It says it all doesn't it. Top-quality fish fried for just the right time. Freshly made batter that retains its crispiness on the outside but is soft on the inside. Chips cooked to perfection with a slight external crispiness and mouthwatering smoothness in the middle. Great portions. Good mushy peas. Friendly proprietors. Well worth the wait.

Best piece of Haddock I've had since I was in Newlyn earlier this year. Tender, well cooked and covered in crunchy batter. It were proper 'ansome

We stopped off for fish & chips while visiting the area and what a treat!! I think the queues of folk waiting [on a Thursday evening!!] said it all. We sampled freshly fried fish & chips...they were piping hot, fresh & not at all 'greasy'. I can honestly say that they were the best & freshest fish & chips we have ever tasted...and we live near Whitby-the home of good fish & chips!!!Well done Wessington...we look forward to our next visit!

After trying to get into a local pub for a meal we gave up and decided on a visit to this chippy. What a great choice. We were staying at a caravan site nearby and could not be bothered to cook for ourselves and we're looking for good food.The whole experience from start to finish was good. Serving the fish and chips separately is a good idea as is serving the chips in trays. The chips were some of the best I have ever eaten. My wife loved the fish, nice crisp batter and tasty fish. Will use again if we are ever in the area again.

Nice little chippy. Has limited opening hours but when it is open its worth a stop. Food is nice and prices are good. There's ample parking outside on the road. Recommended.

About my visit on Friday, 22nd July 2016, at around 17:30.I had a Fish meal with Curry sauce.It was, without exaggeration, an absolutely delicious meal served by people who are happy, polite, and helpful.Can I appeal to the owner to consider a more "Home-made", more individual type of Fish cake in addition to the more common type?

Firstly its a while since we called----its still the same SUPERIOR FOOD---BEST CHIPPY IN DERBYSHIREBUT oh!!! the stroppy little madam on the till------its manners to ask if you want the fish and chips together----not wrap them separate--- then blast the customer, IT`S YOUR FAULT, DOH!!!!!!if one of my children had spoken to an adult in that manner , then they would have had DADS wraththe customer IS NOT always right---BUT they are ALWAYS THE CUSTOMERNO customers ====== NO JOB

Always good quality and freshly cooked.Reasonably priced. Sometimes have to wait a while due to long queue, but this due to its popularity. Worth the wait.

I'm very lucky to live in Wessington and visit the local chippy every Friday, my son says they are the best fish and chips ever. You very often have to wait but it's well worth it because they are always lovely and fresh. For anyone local or visiting the area it's well worth a visit. 5 Star

A quick trip out with the daughter to let he have some time behind the wheel of her new car led us to Wessington Chippy. Two lots of fish chips and peas and a mini fish chips and gravy (I know strange combination but that's teenagers for you!)Wish I'd gone for the smaller fish the large is like a meal in itself. The fish was lovely white and flaky, chips were cooked to perfection and the mushy peas were lovely. Would highly recommend Wessington Chippy. Just remember to order your fish as you go in to save a wait. Will visit again soon after I burn the calories off!!

There's always a queue and that speaks volums to me, there chips are fresh crisp and cooked to perfection, fish is delicious and the batter is crispy and bubbly, well worth a drive out to collect them, won't have fish and chips from anywhere else.

If we want take away fish and chips this is the place to go!! The chips are plentiful and crispy and the fish is beautifully cooked and the batter very tasty.

I nipped in on my way home for myself and my family. Whenever I have driven past it has always been busy and several people have recommended that I try it, so i did. I was delighted to see that there wasn't a queue for once, however, I had to wait about 10 minutes for fresh chips which isn't a problem if they're good, but they weren't, they were very greasy and not particularly tasty. The fish was better than I'd had locally for a while and was a good size. I did feel a bit disappointed as we all left most of our chips, as they weren't pleasant. I've spoken to a friend since who was a regular and unprompted, he said it wasn't as good as it used to be as the chips had changed and he didn't go anymore. I probably won't go again, even though it's nearby.

The best fish and chips in the county! Only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays but worth waiting for, which you will have to as it is very popular and at peak times there is quite a queue. The fish is beautifully cooked and the batter stays crisp on the journey home. The chips are always golden brown and crisp. Peas are a bit bright at the moment - perhaps a change of supplier?

These are the best fish and Chips I've eaten. They are as good as any you would have at a coastal fish n chip shop. All the food is made fresh to order so there may be a bit of await but its worth it. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

I recently tried the Wessington Village Chip Shop and was blown away by the standard of service. The fish and chips were the best I have ever eaten and have since been back and had an equally pleasant experience. The staff are very helpful and efficient and the shop itself is immaculate. The food is exceptional and deserves every good review on here and more. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

If we want the best chips in Derbyshire then we always drive 20 minutes to Wessington.The chip shop isn't open every day but do you need to when you are this popular? If you are extremely lucky you might get straight in and get served but normally this little chippy is just so busy. But don't worry the wait is worth it once you're eating the goods. These fish and chips are second to none. It even has the backing of my young son who is the fussiest eater I have ever known! The decision to try chicken nuggets that were not cooked in McDonalds was such a challenge! He loved them so much he always asks if we can go to that chip shop that does the great chicken nuggets. I have spoken to so many friends who say this and possibly the chip shop at Cromford are the best ones in Derbyshire.Go on a Summers evening and sit out and enjoy the delicious food. You will not leave disappointed.

It is that good, I now only have fish and chips on the days this place is open. The fish is extra fresh and always cooked to perfection with a very good batter. Many folk travel a fair distance to come here and it is very well priced.

Been here since 1949 and the best fish and chips.Even does batter-free steamed or fried fish.Only open evenings Thurs, Fri, Sat.Very friendly staff.Don't be put off by what looks like a huge queue - it's people who've put then order in and are waiting as much is cooked to order.

Tucked away in the Heart of Derbyshire and a little village square is the lovely Wessington fish and Chip Shop. On the way from the Matlock area to the A38/M1/Alfreton area, it is a hidden gem to stop off at, at any time of the year. The village is lovely, and so is this chip shop, though, although for locals, you never feel like a stranger or out of place.A great place for keeping up the Great British tradition of Fish and Chips!

Heading back from a trip out stumbled across this chip shop and what a little jem. There was a que which told us the locals know something good happens here and they weren't wrong. I only wish it was closer so we could visit more often

The best fish I've had! Pure white and the chips were cooked to perfection a little more expensive than most but you are paying for quality!!!

Always appears to be closed when I pass through the village, but that's not a criticism... it's a little chippy in a little village that sells chips :0) Feels a little like you're crashing into someone's living room, but the price is fair and served with a smile.

yes you may have to queue at times but its a small spotlessly clean chippy and all the food is fresh and cooked while you wait and its worth the wait :) and you get what you pay for and this is 1st class better than any greasy seaside chippy, the fish are huge and pure white with crispy batter and a mountain of chips and yes I`m eating some right now and they were still hot when I travelled back home , highly recommended

Quality good and great service on our recent visit. We were expecting a huge wait with our order for 12 people but we were served quickly and didn't have to wait too long at all considering food is prepared while you wait. Fish and chips were delicious... Worth the drive from our campsite and the few extra pennies!!

Was o.k but not exceptional. Long wait and very expensive. I believe Ambergate chippy and Robinsons at Cromford are both better and much cheaper.
