Called in in the way back from Swindon. No booking. The front of house were so welcoming and accommodating promising to fit us in. We sat at the bar for a g&t. Lovely atmosphere. Roaring open fire. The owner was behind the bar, so friendly, chatting away while we waited for our table. We visited Saturday lunchtime and it was busy with families, children and dogs. The menu had plenty of variety. I’m coeliac and there was so much choice. Cider battered cod and chips with mint purée had my name on it. My partner ordered the pie and mash. Both arrived piping hot. We cleared our plates! As a coeliac I can’t remember the last time I had such good fish and chips - probably over 10 years ago before I was diagnosed. My partner didn’t speak just smiled and ate. Thank you so much The Wellesley Arms we will certainly be back.

Came here to celebrate my husbands 70th Birthday as it was halfway between Bristol & Marlborough & the reviews were good. Very disappointed in the attitude of the person in charge? manager/owner? We asked for a round table which they apparently don't have for 6 which is fine but the answer was rude & aggressive "look around you, can you see a round table?". Then when choosing from the menu we asked if 'the Birthday boy' could choose from the more expensive main menu but have a starter from the set menu & pay more for it. This was refused in no uncertain manor which was ridiculous when the food is obviously available. Not great customer service! Then when it came to desert one of us who had chosen the set menu was told that they could choose from the main menu & pay more!!! This tainted our experience & we won't be returning. Food was good, not amazing. I must say the young man whose first day it was that waited on us was lovely.

Friendly and welcoming village pub. Busy and convivial with friendly service. Came for Sunday lunch. Food was ok, but as vegetarians, Sunday roasts are not particularly exciting and sadly, there are very few places, especially in rural areas, that make more than a token effort for vegetarians and vegans. But that's not a complaint about the Wellesley, more of a general issue. Overall, happy to recommend this place and we'll be happy to give it a try again when the full menu may have more to offer.

First of all I want to make clear that the food at this pub was good. I also accept that in the current climate pubs need to maximise their revenue. Having said all that we were unhappy at the position we were left in at Sunday lunch. It may well have been the case when I booked weeks ago I was told that tables are booked for a 2 hour slot, however if you want to rigorously enforce this, it would be helpful to remind customers on the day and ensure service is prompt (which it was not). The pub was busy and slower than usual service is acceptable if you can complete the meal. We were left in a position where we were told as there was only 20 minutes left if we wanted desert we would have to eat it in the bar. Then we were told that there was “just enough time” to eat at the table but clearly it would be rushed. We elected not to have a desert in those circumstances and had coffee outside (in the car park) instead. We were meeting friends and had travelled a long way so we wanted to spend some time with them and it is more difficult to regulate time as a four than as a two person booking. We came away feeling very disappointed.

Just stopped by rather than waiting in a car park, really nice on the inside and very welcoming. Sat outside in the peaceful beer garden with a nice cold Guinness, then in the courtyard with a pepsi, crisps and olives. Felt rather relaxed and managed to unwind in the hour I was there. We stopped off at the Wellesley Arms en route to Devon having spotted it on Tripadvisor and liking the look of it. We weren’t disappointed. From the moment we walked through the door we felt welcomed by the landlord who obviously knew his beers (and recommended an excellent keg IPA brewed locally). The menu is well put together by a team that clearly knows what people like to eat. Fish and pie specials complemented by pub classics, all prepared to a very high standard and presented nicely. But most importantly they tasted great. The burger was one of the best I’ve had in a long time, with great chips. Definitely add the smoked bacon too! My daughter had the beef and ale pie which was hand made with crisp pastry and a rich filling. My wife had supreme of chicken which was also really nicely cooked, moist and tender. The decor was cosy with candles on the tables and proper napkins. I really can’t fault anything about it. All pubs should be like this. We will be back next time we’re passing!

Came here a couple of years ago and was disappointed but decided to give them a second chance. The good first; service and ambience were fine and we felt welcomed. Now the not so good. Would liked to have had a salad dish as a main course - but my wife chose the "starter prawns" and some chips. Removed the rather greasy batter before eating them Asked for a single scoop of ice cream and this was served in a rather plain bowl and when asked for a wafer told they didn't have one. £2.50 for a small scoop. I chose the duck breast and was disappointed. At £22.00, I expected something a bit better. It was "chewy" with slightly underdone greens with a small heap of mashed potato. Cooked in house, I somehow doubt it? To sum up, expensive and not good enough. I would have mentioned this to the servers, but we were guests and it didn't seem appropriate.

Met up with family who were holidaying near Malmesbury. I chose this pub based on sample menus and fact that lunch service included the evening menu choices - a significant plus in my eyes. The visit didn’t start well as it transpired my online booking was for the following week however after some friendly banter there was room to accommodate all 5 of us (plus new puppy). The staff were very pleasant, informative and attentive without being ‘too much’. We all throughly enjoyed the chicken supreme, loaded house burger, thai curry, fish n chips and chicken milanese. The desert were a triumph too with a special call out from me on the lime and ginger cheesecake - fantastic. Will highly recommend to everyone I know and help support Mark &Mark and the team go from strength to strength

Noisy atmosphere, and the food was mediocre. No seasoning at all, especially salt and lemon, FAR too much oil/butter in sauces (which we therefore did not want to pour over our prawns and chicken, as we were told we should), and the curry looked awful on the plate. We popped in today on our bikes. We've been looking at houses in the area and figured we'd cycle through the village and stop off here for some lunch. We didn't factor in two things: (1) It was Mother's day and thus was going to be a bit formal and busy; (2) there was a power cut and there was no food anyway! The staff were really trying their best in spite of that and you could see how disappointed everyone was. We appreciated the openness and - although the interior was gloomy by candlelight - spirits were high. We will definitely return on a less busy Sunday without a power cut!

We went for lunch after booking online the same day. We ordered drinks of half a cider and a soda and lime which were served fairly quickly. After waiting for more than 20 minutes for our order to be taken we ordered two club sandwiches. Twenty five minutes later the food arrived and my first impression was that they were the smallest club sandwiches I had ever seen. the bread was so hard it was inedible and the chicken was tough the bacon was fatty. The only redeeming factor was the fries which were nice! Needless to say whilst paying the bill I told the staff that we thought it was probably the the worst meal we had ever had and to their credit they said they would only charge us for the drinks. However they charged £3.20 for the soda and lime which is probably the most expensive one I have ever had. We will not be returning to the Wellesley Arms again.

Only gripe is that we felt a bit crammed in to our table - in hindsight we should have said something as the other dining room was empty and we could have moved there but perhaps the pub should think about how they seat people and the tables they allocate

24/12: Went for a few drinks with family and friends. Generally bad experience, thought a few of the staff were unwelcoming and unaccommodating. Personally not a fan of the bar area, with no proper chairs just stalls and small tables (not being allowed in the rest of the pub for some reason), also dislike the walls being painted black, makes a real change from the open welcoming old Wellesley arms. Additionally I do think everything is a bit over priced for a local village pub. Following this experience I left a 2 star rating with no review (text) 25/12: I then returned with family on Christmas day for a few drinks, the bar was only open for 2 hours but happy as it was the only place in Sutton Benger open. The bar staff working made it clear they did not normally work behind the bar, however I found them to be very friendly, welcoming and apologetic about slightly slow service. We stayed in the back room where it was nicer as we sat at a normal table. I left feeling better about my experiences, thinking I might edit/add to my rating when I had time. 26/12: Again only place in the village open, so definitely happy I had somewhere to go for a drink with some other friends. While ordering our first round of drinks at the bar, the manager saw my name on my bank card a realised I had left the 2 star review 2 days before. Rather than ask me for some feedback or context to my poor review, he just called me rude and claimed they were very accommodating on the 24th and said he was surprised I bothered coming back. Not the welcoming pub owner you would expect in a local village pub. I left the bar with my drinks feeling very uncomfortable and unwelcome. As closing time neared we were approached by a lady who just continued to say to us “2 stars! 2 stars! 2 stars!” she then began to have a go at me, she said I should change my review to 5 stars, saying how ungrateful we were. This situation was extremely uncomfortable, I wasn’t once asked my opinion or reasonings behind my original 2 star rating, instead I was berated and made to feel as if I had done something wrong other than expressing my opinion in the form of a rating.

Very average pub grub with a huge long wait. Others who came in after were served first. Far from cheap, and the included service charge was not warranted.

Had the most amazing food on Friday night at the Wellesley. The goats cheese and beetroot starter was gorgeous and the Fish Goan curry was beautiful- full of fish unlike some places where it is just sauce and a little bit of fish. My husbands...

Wonderful Saturday evening. Food, service and surroundings all spot on. Lots of really good pub food on the menu, I had delicious chicken supreme, my wife the goats cheese and sweet potato salad, our friends the curry’s. All delicious, likewise the puddings. Really attentive service...

We live a few hours away so only visit occasionally but we love it every time we get there. Tony, Pat and Jayne provide epic homemade food and real ale straight from the barrel. Not to be missed…

To be honest I was surprised to come on here and see some quite bad reviews for this place. We visited for an early dinner with our young family. The venue was quirky, imaginative and interesting. Great for our little children as there was lots to look at- big printed posted of fruits and vegetables and a great garden to explore which loops all the way around the pub restaurant. It really is a beautiful spot to enjoy. We were served by, who we assume, must have been the manager/owner. She was great. On it and prompt. Made great recommendations. The younger two servers were a little lacking in knowledge of items on the dishes- we overheard a male server tell a customer that pieces of romanesco were tender stem broccoli and that 'he doesn't argue with the chef' and the young female server came over to do our order when it was already done. Easily done and at least they were both polite and trying their best. The menu offers local produce, interesting flavour combinations and nice portions. The highlight for us was the ice Crean sundaes- we shared 3 between us and loved the combination of flavours and textures. We loved it, would recommend it and would love to return when next in the area. Thank you.

We came to Wilton for an evening for pizza, can’t fault the pizza and location however, not happy when the bill came. I don’t like it when a service charge is added without my permission. I want to add my own charge if I believe it is deserved. When I asked for the charge to be removed I felt tension from one of the servers who did not come to the table with my new bill. I did leave extra but it has to be on my terms not the terms of the location.
