I had two wonderful experiences with Waypoint Restaurant in one week! The first was a surprise dinner I threw for my husband the week leading up to our wedding. I worked with Gill for months planning the details from the dinner itself to the water taxis to take our friends and family from Oban to the island. Let me just say, she was an absolute delight to work with. Finally meeting her in person on the day was just the icing on the cake. Everyone raved about the dinner and Gill! She and her team just made us feel right at home. The second was a lunch after an excursion on the island for our wedding guests. It was just the perfect way to relax after a day outdoors. Once again, Waypoint outdid themselves. My husband and I plan to return to Scotland and Oban one day and a visit to Waypoint will be high on our list.

Excellent service, delicious food from a fairly short menu. Food prices reasonable, house red excellent and unusually cheap at £22 a bottle. Booking essential. Opening hours are odd, you need to check before you plan to go. Ferry service from Oban will run extra times if there are a lot in your party. Atmosphere is very friendly, feels more like a clubhouse than a restaurant, which suits us but may not suit all.

A wonderful experience … exciting to catch the water taxi over to the Island of Kerrera and then a beautiful and relaxing view from the restaurant back across the harbour to Oban … food was excellent and something for everyone (including vegetarian and fussy teenagers!). Great service and fantastic, laid back atmosphere - something a little different. Book ferry back to Oban in advance if you need it. Highly recommend.

A wonderful family gathering with excellent food and attentive but sensitive service. The important food is locally sourced from the island so menus change depending on availability. Panoramic views of Oban harbour. The water taxi from Obans North pier is great and there's plenty of rambles after the meal if needed. This is a restaurant for a leisurely visit fitting into the ferry but well worth the effort.

Disappointed with food. Firstly no bread offered before meal, then when food arrived the fish was blackened the pork oversalted and the risotto two tbsp rice with some frozen peas for £16. Have been a few times before and the portions are tiny now. Sorry but I would not recommend this bar now and I don’t see the point in paying for the ferry because no one checks that you have paid and latecomers barge their way on! Like other nice little bars around Oban this has become a rip off for tourists. This is the first review I have ever written as I feel so strongly

I’ve been visiting the island for decades, and always found this restaurant welcome and good quality. But it wasn’t really consistent in service and and quality albeit never poor. The place now has a real local feel, quality of decor, cleanliness, bar, staff, food and wine is a lot better. While the costs are high ish, I’ve paid a lot more for a lot less in cities, and the fresh fish and shellfish, the hand crafted pizzas and the ability to get a reasonable glass of wine by the glass further sets it apart. The views from the restaurant increase that gap, and the staff are attentive and genuine. The grilled mackerel was delicious as was the cod. Coffee machine broken but home baking was outstanding.

I enjoyed a meal in this small restaurant, whilst sailing. The staff are lovely and food pleasant. Mussels to start though, too small and only one slice of tiny toast. Main was nicer with great chips and langoustine. However langoustine whilst very nice, had some decent sized and others smaller. I think at the price if 6 were ordered and some were smaller, then they should be increased in amount, to make uniform. Also, salad needed a bit of dressing, but it came with none. As said, great chips. Loved the cheesecake! Five stars for it.

We visited today from Oban for a walk around Kerrera, we arrived at approx. 1:30pm. Before we set off walking my mother and myself were going to grab a quick tea/coffee whilst we got our bearings. Looking for a table to sit at we were 'greeted' by a staff member who very abruptly stated that she couldnt feed us if we hadn't booked. No hello, quite a noticeable lack of customer service from the get go, and such an awful attitude towards people and potential customers! We had brought our own food, so that wasnt even why we were there. The rude nature of our 'welcome' threw my mother who ended up asking for just water, which was very quickly drank due to the awful atmosphere beget by this particular staff member. On leaving I went to the bar to ask for a 2 cans of Fanta. 'WE DON'T DO FANTA'. No mention of what they did sell, I had to ask what else was available. Just the least helpful person I have encountered on my travels around the islands. I have been to far busier establishments, running on skeleton staff and have always been greeted with excellent service. Unfortunately this place fell well below these standards. A pamphlet we picked up in the Marina Reception stated that booking was NOT required. So which is it? Actually it doesn't matter, because I will never be back.

Visited here with friends and family as we had been a few years ago. This is a stunning location and sitting looking across the bay at a Oban from this venue is beautiful, it does however come at a cost. The food we had was good and we all enjoyed our dinner but for what you get the cost is high. It is also a bit disappointing that there now is very little seafood on the menu, unless you preorder before you get there, which you don’t always know what you would like until you see a menu. I also think that the cost of the ferry, £5pp should be offset against your bill if you spend over a certain amount. There was 6 of us so immediately we had £30 on our bill for the ferry and the bill came to £240. I think for this reason alone we wouldn’t return which is a shame as we have always enjoyed it in previous years.

We stayed three times this summer at Oban Marina on our boat while cruising in the area and ate at the Waypoint six times. The chef is seriously skilled, and the staff is seriously friendly. We were delighted to find so nice a restaurant and bar in a marina (usually they’re not so nice). We suspect that non-yachties would find the place exceptional....a short and scenic ride (about 7 mins) across the bay, a great view back toward Oban, and a serene acquatic setting, without the hustle and bustle of somewhat over-crowded Oban. Be sure to talk with someone (anyone) at the bar....you’ll leave full of sea stories.

We stopped at the Oban Marina for a few days to sit out some bad weather. Visited the Waypoint and as usual we were not disappointed. They seem to get better every time we visit. We had an evening meal (mussels, soup, lamb shanks) and then went back during the day for cake.....mmmm, fabulous! The staff are exceptional, they can't do enough. Take for example tonight, the marina staff told us that although the bar is usually closed on a Monday, there had been a request for it to be opened as there were a lot of boats in due to the bad weather, so they found someone to open up and everyone was happy! That was what we said as we relaxed on the patio of the Waypoint Restaurant & Bar eating our dinner and looking across the bay to Oban. The entire evening was magical. The weather was perfect and the ferry ride to the island was delightful. We snagged one of the tables on the patio and started the evening with a couple of beers and some mussels. The scallops that came after were also very good. We watched the sun set and relaxed as we waited for the ferry to take us back to town. Good luck.

I took my mum on a day trip to Kerrera today as she hasn't been well and I wanted to treat her to a nice day out. We had hoped to stop in here for a bit of lunch but didn't realise the place had now closed for the season. There were keys in the door so we did think the place might be closed but we stood outside for a while and admired the scenery and peeked inside to see if it was open. A man eventually came out with a cup of coffee (of his own) and snapped ' We are closed - we've been closed for a long time now guys.' I said to him 'what a shame, we had hoped you would be open for a cup of tea and coffee.' He laughed and said 'well we're not.' He then sat down at the restaurant's assigned outdoor seating area with his own cup of coffee and turned away from us. I presume he is an owner or a manager but I can assure you that we will never return to this restaurant in the future. My mother and I live in Oban and we have family and friends from surrounding islands who we will warn NEVER to eat here. You are an appalling and ill-mannered human being. And just to let you know - you've actually only been closed since September 27th - not really that long a time.

A really great location on Kerrera Island overlooking Oban . The food is great when you get there, but the biggest drawback is the ferry. It only runs once an hour and only takes 12 people, so if it is full it will come back for you but that takes 20 minutes. The other drawback is that it shuts at 9pm. So its ok if you are staying on a boat in the marina, but if you have to catch the last ferry at 9pm it makes for a very short and hurried experience. Probably better to go over for lunch.

I used the contact form on the website and there was no reply. I emailed Oban Marina and they said they would book for me. Again I heard nothing so had to telephone Waypoint. I spoke to a girl who let me book a table for 7.30pm.There was no mention at this point of the last ferry time. We aimed to catch the 7.10pm ferry across but it was full so we had to get the next one. This didn't come back for us until 7.35pm so we were late for the table. We found out on this trip that the last ferry was 9pm back to Oban. So not arriving until 8pm we realised that we weren't going to have the leisurely meal we had hoped for. We decided we could really only have time for the main course. We were not greeted well , we felt unwelcome and there were only 2 staff who were running around frantically. There didn't seem to be a table reserved for us , we were told we could 'sit anywhere'. We were told that we should not have been booked in for 7.30pm and the last booking should be for 7pm to allow time for a meal. The menu was basic. I chose scampi , my husband had haddock and chips. The batter was greasy and soggy and not even worthy of a fish and chip shop let alone a seafood restaurant. We looked at the dessert menu , when one could be found , but decided we should be back for the ferry. There were too many people for this boat and the remainder had to come back on the 'staff boat'. We were told the ferry could not run after sunset and the staff were apologetic , saying the owner , a Peter Weir , was the one to whom we should complain. He seems content to run what was a lovely restaurant into the ground which is such a shame. There must be some hidden agenda , maybe wanting it for some other use. So it is now off our list and we will go to the other great seafood restaurants in the area instead. I should imagine it is off many people's lists by now. All in all a terrible experience.

This was my second visit. The first time I really enjoyed it. This time, not so.It started off badly. The ferry taking us to Kerrera was full, and, as per the restaurant's website, if this is the case another ferry comes straight back over for remaining passengers, and so the 'captain' said she'd be back in 20 minutes. She didn't; she came back a whole hour later, which meant we'd been waiting for the ferry for 1hr 20mins in total. I queried why she didn't return for us and she just looked at me as if she wanted to kill me. Like, really kill me.So, we arrived at the restaurant one hour after our table was booked. The experience was so so, except for the fact there were lots of screaming, running children everywhere. In and out of the restaurant, leaving doors open each time. I had to get up about 6 times to close the door as it was cold. The staff seemed completely oblivious, as were the brats parents. So to the food. Very disappointing. Tough steaks. Fries that were crying out for the oil in the fryer to be changed. Bland scallops. Horrendous desserts. At £150 for four of us, I expected better. To top it all, we'd just finished our meal when a panicked waitress rushed to out table to tell us "you need to get on the ferry in 5 mins as it's the last one of the night". So, we had to very quickly get the bill, pay and run to the quayside. This was rubbish, there were another 2 ferries that night, we later learned.Hugely disappointing.

We sailed to the Waypoint with a friend on one of the very few hot & sunny days we have had this summer and the experience we had was bordering on cringeworthy. Service was slow - actually, we were told that the oven was ‘out’ and that we would have a wait of about half an hour. - This was at 1 o’clock lunchtime - not a problem when the view & location is so stunning and we were really chilled to begin with. However, the white wine tasted watery and the 5 langoustines in garlic butter & Pernod which I was so looking forward to didn’t taste of any Pernod at all. I don't recall any garnish and some crusty bread would've been a perfect accompaniment - so we were glad we had ordered a side of chips. - I love langoustines but after we had excavated these ones, there was so little left to eat and no way of venturing into the claws, that we were still hungry afterwards. A finger bowl would’ve been much easier than those tiny sachets of wipes which were blowing all over the decking like tumbleweed, along with the used napkins, despite our best efforts. Tables remained uncleared. Everyone stared on whilst two little girls held the show and did their best to chuck the gravel path into the bay. Desert didn’t materialise because the waitress confused the crēme brulées’ existence with the day before's menu. Our friend was treating us so we thought it churlish and rude to whinge at the time. We still managed to enjoy ourselves as we had sunshine, good company and it IS a fab location! Sorry Waypoint.

Well.....I was just so disappointed, travelled all way from south uk, and family took me for a treat, as had been so good, wee boat trip was fun and all looked so good, however it seemed that the chef was trained in the 1980s...as everything was garnished with orange! Starter of king prawns, in ginger and lime came , and were wee prawns, looking suspiciously like Aldi frozen prawns, nice enough but not king, also covered in orange pieces and grated carrot!! The fish and chips that I was looking forward to my main of haddock ..fresh fish and when you live in landlocked part of uk, you think Oban be good for fish....oven dried up chips, limp piece haddock with greasy batter, and yes you guessed it , orange garnish amd grated carrot!! Eek....yup . sorry will not return and sad as oban itself got some l8vely restaurants, and if thats what tourist s visit it not a good image.

In Oban visiting family and thought it would be a nice treat to go over on the little ferry for lunch. Having been before, we knew the ferry times and booked a table for 1.30pm (5 adults and 3 children).Couldn't all fit in the ferry so 4 went over to sort the table. First half of our party arrived at 1.20pm only to be told that they had let our table go because they had 2 lots of walk in diners!! What is the point of asking people to book if it means nothing. (Booking was made with 3 days notice) We had to then wait outside in the cold with 2 young children for 45 minutes before we were squashed in a corner inside while we waited for our table. We ordered drinks and only half came, had to go back to the bar to chase up the rest! We eventually sat down at our table an hour and 5 mins after our original booking. The food was greasy and average. No children's menu or offer to make a smaller portion. All in all what should have been an enjoyable lunch out with family was spoiled by poor customer service and poor management. We should have just jumped on the next ferry back. Certainly won't go again or recommend it to anyone.

We booked a table for 8 on a wet Friday afternoon. The boat going across can only take 12 passengers and despite booking our group was split as we were in a queue with others who were returning to the island. Had we got in the queue earlier this wouldn't be a problem but we had mistakenly thought the boat was only used for restaurant guests. Our slight delay didn't spoil our afternoon as we had a lovely welcome from Karen and Paris who looked after us - nothing was a bother. The food was very tasty and good value. The cheeseboard was enormous! The views (despite the clouds) are lovely and our kids pottered about near the shore once the rain stopped. Very enjoyable afternoon out. Will do this again.

I believe this is a bit of a "hidden secret" you catch the boat from Oban Harbour over to the Waypoint Grill restaurant, we stopped by and had lunch along with a bottle of wine and found the whole experience fab , prices are reasonable and the staff chatty but efficient , cant really complain especially when the suns out a great place to sit back and chill and bonny views across to Oban

It's a bit of a trek, via a small boat, to get to this place and then to have the food be just average isn't worth it. When I made the reservation for 12pm the lady took it and then when I asked when the boat left the Oban dock to come over she told me it left every 10 minutes after the hour--so how was I supposed to make a12pm reservation on time? Glad I asked. Clearly the boat leaves more often then this because it is always going back and forth and the trip only takes 10 minutes. On the restaurants website it says the ferry costs 5 pounds, but then the you will receive a voucher after eating worth 4 pounds, meaning you have to pay the boatman 1 pound? I called the restaurant about this and they said, "no, you show the ferryman your restaurant receipt and you get the trip for free upon return." Someone needs to update that website.I agree with another reviewer about the path to the restaurant. It is not marked and we would up wandering into the boatyard. It is not clear how to get into the place as you have to walk past the toilets and in-between the kitchen and restaurant to get it. The menu was bog standard and unattractive and although my friend ordered a scallop baguette. was brought the seafood platter. To their credit they only charged her for the baguette and let her keep the higher-priced dish. I ordered a three-bean burger and was disappointed to receive (for over 7 pounds) something that looked like it came from a prefaced frozen package. In a nice restaurant I expect the burger to be homemade! The service was friendly, but despite having come over to us several times, the server never took our dirty plates away from us until we paid and left. When we got back to the dock to take the ferry to Oban the boatman saw us coming and just left anyway. The other boatman, on the dock, quite rudely told us that the "boat was full" and we would have to wait another 20 minutes for the next one. Glad it wasn't pouring rain. I have been in way smaller boats that took more than 12 people. All in all, not worth the trip.

We have been in this restaurant few times in last few years while going past Oban and had a lovely experience. This year however experience was completely different. To start off, few of the meals we were after were not available which is understandable since we were late in the evening and waitress was apologetic, while so called manager not so much. Once we placed our order and drinks order ( which we had to go to the bar to order every time), they kept forgetting to bring part of the order. Meal on itself was quite avarage. Later on as we were finishing off our meal we watched the meal have been served to table of seven that came in after we ordered our meal and all of the sudden items that were not available for us were available for them. Later on as we asked for a bill and tried to smooth out any disagreements, we have been told very loudly by the so called manager again that "if we going to give her attitude she is going to give us attitude back" and at the suggestion it wasn't the most professional anwer she stormed off and left a barman to handle our bill. Fair to say it have brought down atmosphere for the dinner and it will not be a first choice for our next visits.

Party of eight visited on Friday and had a great time. Entertained by Paris and Harris (Karen) during the the entire visit of a couple of hours, I don't know what some people are looking for on a wee island in the Atlantic, the Ritz, marble pavements, hanging garden of Babylon, chamber music and chefs with French names I can't spell??It is not expensive, value for money all round, priced accordingly, if you want West End cuisine, for goodness sake go there and pay their prices, don't try and be smart, respect honest toil, easier if you have ever tried it!!!

We booked this on the back of a friend's experience. Had to change our intended booking time as the last ferry for restaurant customers leaves earlier than the last ferry - why? The track to the place, though not very obvious, was wet soggy grass although by going around some outbuildings it was possible to access it by a gravel path. You pass the 'kitchen', housed in a tent. Furnishings are basic but the staff were friendly. Never had garlic bread before that was a wedge shaped piece of ciabatta with what seemed to cheddar melted over it, and devoid of garlic. Two had the 'pie', well not so much pie as a tasty stew with a couple of bits of pastry that had been cooked separately on the side. I had seafood tagliatelle, described as "mixed seafood in a tomato, herb and garlic sauce". Yes there was seafood in it but the sauce was thin, no depth of flavour as if it had been neither thickened nor reduced. Despite what their website says, it was NOT "a delightful seafood experience".There are so many other places to eat in Oban and just wish we had picked one of them.

I live in Oban and have eaten many times over the years at The Waypoint Grill. We have never been disappointed with the food until now. Our party of 8 Had a starter and a main course there on 26th of May. Whoever The Oban Marina has taken on as chief this year dose not have a clue how to cook seafood. The Oban Marina was such a great place to eat and we had many good times there. We will not be back again after the rubbish which was served up to us.

Disappointed in quality and choice when visited in May 2014. Went elsewhere in Oban after that. In previous years it was outstandingly good for choice, freshness and quality. Apparently there had been a change of ownership.

We visited here whilst passing through Oban. We enjoyed the boat ride over to Kerrera and with the discount from the restaurant it only cost us £2 each return. We had a lovely table looking out over the marina and the grill is basic but charming. The staff were lovely and very helpful and the Mussels with cream and tarragon were the biggest and most delicious I've eaten.

On our second visit to Oban we took the ferry to Kerrera for lunch at the Waypoint, The location was great but basic, we both had soup which was really nice, then I had the scallops and black pudding which was nice but I thought a bit overpriced compared to my partners langoustines which were amazing.

We visited as a party of four on the 26th August. The weather was lovely as was the boat ride to the Isle of Kerrera. The food was delicious and the staff were very pleasant, making us and our dog (who was provided with a bowl of water - much appreciated on such a hot day :-) ) feel really welcome. The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views of the Marina and Oban all make for a very enjoyable experience.

We came here twice, at the beginning and end of two weeks sailing in the Western Isles and it was the best place we found. It may not look much but the food was fresh and beautifully cooked. My langoustines were huge and dripping in garlic and Pernod butter. The hake in its sauce was absolutely perfect. Others rated the chowder, mussels, in fact everything, highly. The only thing that would have improved it was a 'rinse doigts' for my garlicky fingers. I had to go to the loo to wash!

The food was very good however it was let down by staff who were lets say less than professional.Swearing in front of your customers (the F Word) is unacceptable. Putting the food in front of you and dashing off is also unacceptable and not checking if everything is alright also represents a careless attitude..I felt that we were 'putting the staff out' and they were not really interested in service.

Nice spot but the food isn't great and with a tiny kitchen and a lot of covers it's shouldn't be a surprise. Service was actually bad. Waiter acted like he hated his job. Having said all that it's reasonably priced and the view does make up for a lot of it's short comings.

Considering this place is virtually isolated except for the sea, you would expect the seafood menu to be more extensive and also the seafood to be better prepared. The Fantastic location of this restaurant is let down by average food and average service. It is worth making a trip over to Kerrera for the location and experience but do not go expecting a fantastic meal.

Highly recommend a visit to the Alan Stevenson house restaurant, it’s a little tucked away at Hynish but definitely worth the drive over. Very well stocked bar, amazing service and excellent food. There was 8 of us including 2 kids, there isn’t a kids menu but discussing this at booking they said it would be no problem to rustle something up and they made maca and chicken goujons which went down a treat. We all had something different but every meal was delicious. The fish was too big for the plate!!! We were lucky that we had 2 drivers which allowed the rest to enjoy some drinks but Kris did say if we are back again and would like a drink but no way home he said mention it to them and they might be able to suggest a lift which was a nice touch. Maybe bear that in mind if you want to visit!! Very well stocked bar as I said

Just been announced that it is now permanently closed. The owners’ other 2 restaurants, a pizzeria and a tapas restaurant, are still open along the front.
