My husband and I went in for coffees. We both left them on the table as it was too disgusting to drink. My cappuccino had an artificial saccharine taste and no coffee flavour whatsoever. It tasted like the cheap Poundland packets. It was watery, sugary, artificial tasting , cheap muck. My husband’s filter coffee was no better. It was watery and tasteless . Definitely won’t be back.

Thank you for a beautiful afternoon. The afternoon tea was stunningly presented and delicious. The addition of the cheese board and antipasti as a savoury alternative for me was heaven. Literally stumbled across this fine old hotel as we did the Ramsgate to Margate coastal walk. We felt deserved a cream tea. Delicious: clotted cream, jam and a very nice selection of teas, We took it on the trough iron veranda with a view. Loved it. The staff made the visit too: receptionists were delightful and the waiting staff super friendly. It has a feeling of an old hotel with a grand past that's well looked after to this day - I would definitely return if in this area again.

Went for afternoon full tea. Quick service. Food poor. Sandwich fillings good but bread from the cheapest brand. None of the cakes were baked on the premises and were pretty mundane. No amount of frilly doilies and floral china can make up for poor food. Altogether a disappointing birthday tea.

Hard to say which is best the food or view across the sea from the restaurant and bar. The burgher was excellent with quality minced beef grilled to perfection Chips were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Fish pie was crammed with flaky tasty fish with a thin potato topping. Pasta dish with a great tomato sauce was full of flavour and perfectly cooked. Puddings were very good but the chocolate and orange brownie won the most votes. Good selection of wines and beers. Helpful and friendly staff.

We booked afternoon tea to celebrate the forthcoming wedding of our daughter - there were seven of us. The hotel surroundings are a perfect traditional location with china tea services, cutlery and ornaments around the room. This leads onto a Veranda where the tea is also served. The staff are dressed in traditional black and white waiting uniforms and are very pleasant indeed. The tea itself consisted of crustless sandwiches - very fresh bread, mixed filling - very good. Excellent scones with good quality cream and jam. Two kinds of cakes - choc brownie or lemon - both tasty but unambitious.Nice english tea or alcohol on offer. Whilst not in the same league as a posh London hotel, it has to be noted that the price, of £18.50, is exceptional value and considerably less than london prices. The hotel and dining room has a charm all of its own and deserves a reputation as an excellent afternoon tea venue.

Have been and stayed at the Walpole Bay Hotel a number of times over the years and it retains its quaint charm. After a good few years it was time to visit for Afternoon Cream tea either on the long veranda festooned with flowers or in the restaurant, we chose the later. Swift service with a smile, Earl Grey Tea and a coffee, scones, cut sandwiches, cakes all on the expected stand. Very enjoyable and a great way to let the world rush by whilst you while away an hour, all accompanied by the pianist. Great stuff, will be back.

The splendid veranda of the Walpole Bay, shaded with geraniums and the glorious Edwardian Hotel behind is the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon tea. Expect Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot to wander past at any moment.Cream tea was perfect, fresh hot scones with clotted cream, jam and strawberries, finger sandwiches - in our case smoked salmon, egg, ham and cucumber, and moist cake - lemon drizzle and chocolate. Took my friend for a cream tea with sandwiches for her birthday. Have been here before for lunch but today the restaurant seemed huge, lacked atmosphere, no background music. Waited a while for the tea to come out, looked nice and was told if we required anything else ie more water, tea just ask. But that was the thing, we couldn’t find anyone! We waited to see if anyone came out but gave up, we would have liked some more tea/ coffee, waited for someone to bring out the bill but nothing so I went to reception to pay, had a bit of a wait as there were people checking in. Not sure I would be in a rush to go back as have had many afternoon teas and overall this wasn’t the best experience I encountered.

Afternoon Tea for fourYou had to order at reception and pay before you were seated so didn't realise until when we got into the dining area that it was completely empty. No one was even having lunch. We were served one sandwich each with the crusts cut off so the sandwiches were tiny. There were 4 pieces of chocolate cake which was overly sweet and very dry and also 4 small pieces of lemon cake. The scones were freshly cooked and lovely however only one pot of jam and a small basket of crisps to share between four of us. All in all not worth the money. This is worst afternoon tea we have ever had! The worst part of all was my friend went to reception (as there were no staff about) to ask for more tea and was charged for it! Absolute rip off don't go there. Have had better hot lunches for half the price at better places. Drab and dreary decor but big canvas print of owner in her younger years in dining hall??

We had hopes for this restaurant and it was the meanest most old fashioned ham salad I think I have ever seen. Ordering and paying at the reception before we went to the dining room didn't help us to feel welcome. Plus it is hugely overpriced. It is run on the style of a cheap workmen's cafe which would be fine only it has far grander pretensions. The whole room is rather dreadful with a very large amount of photographs of the clearly self loving owner and a lot of clutter.

After some anticipation that this was going to be a real Sunday treat , our meal at the Walpole sadly did not live up to expectations . We were warmly greeted and shown to a lovely table . The restaurant was full of families and older couples who all seemed to be enjoying themselves. We were given a warm roll but it was nothing special- just the ready bake ones sort all supermarkets sell . The starter menu was quite good and the mushrooms in garlic weren’t bad . The main roast dinners were served promptly but the waitress didn’t know which condiments went with what eg that lamb had mint sauce not horseradish . When we asked for more gravy they were very obliging . The portion sizes were good but the veg was quite bland and unimaginative. The desserts were the greatest disappointment. None were homemade and were all sickly sweet and synthetic tasting . The cheese board was slightly better . The accompanying piano music was a real treat and the overall atmosphere well sustained but for £25 a head the meal wasn’t great .

This was a great place to go for a Sunday lunch if you want traditional Sunday cooking though next time I go I'll skip the cheese cake dessert and go for something else instead. I enjoyed my vegi meal and my wife thought the roast beef was great and definitely the vegetables including the roast potatoes were all carefully prepared and cooked. It was not only the food that made the meal an attractive place to be but the relaxed atmosphere, piano playing, good service, the feeling of not being rushed and the proprietor coming round to talk to her guests. There are cheaper places including some chains of pubs but I think one gets what one pays for and this was good value for money.

My family visited the Walpole Bay today, to celebrate my sister's 60th birthday. We were booked in for an Afternoon Tea. The place has a very traditional feel to it, and is very quirky with very nice matching china. The sandwiches were ok, but were cut into quarters and still had the crusts on. In my experience, the sandwiches are usually cut into fingers and have the crusts removed. The scones were very nice and light, but we were very disappointed to have whipped cream instead of the traditional Clotted Cream. There was also 2 pieces of cake too. However, if you're looking for somewhere interesting, quirky and old, then this is the place to go! It is a museum hotel and has lots of interesting period artefacts, including an original trellis gated lift!

Nice dining area but food not good. A clue might have been had when I asked about the beef and was told it was all well done. Suspect that is because the meat comes from a packet. The minute you enter the hotel, it's like stepping back, in style, into another era, with so many delightful and interesting items from Edwardian times, through the twenties and thirties, and beyond. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who took our order of baguettes, banana smoothies, and a pot of tea for lunch, which we decided to eat on the veranda as it was such a pleasant day. What excellent value! Three of us had the sausage and bacon baguettes, and my daughter had the sirloin of beef baguettes, all came with salad and crisps, and were really filling. Such a good price for what we had. The banana smoothies were delicious apparently! My husband and I also enjoyed our pot of tea! Following the relaxing lunch we were invited to look around the museum and 'napery'. There's a wonderful gilt caged lift (or stairs if you prefer), leading to the first and second floors where there is so much to see, from costumes, to old radios, gloves, dolls, old surgical instruments, books, artwork, vacuum cleaners, kitchen utensils, you name it, they probably have it! It's wonderful. Also, along the corridors, where you are free to wander and explore, there are the napkins with various artwork, poetry etc provided by past guests. Also, in the dining room (glorious in itself) there are several works of 'napkin' art displayed on the walls, plus artwork from Tracey Emin (be careful if you lift the 'warning' covers in mixed company!). The whole of the reception area is filled with all sorts of items from the past. (Suitcases from an earlier era, cabinets filled with historic items and treasures, books, plants etc.) There's a nice little old fashioned bar lounge too with comfy seating. We enjoyed our step back in time, and the tasty lunch. We hope to return soon with other members of the family. Well worth a visit.

The uniqueness of the Hotel is captivating, there is a real sence of history perhaps from the early part of the 20th century. The museum pieces are for a desired taste but do have historical significance if you look into the Hotel's timeline. Well done to the owners for preserving the buildings true identity. The near sea front location does offer a pleasant backdrop. Parking in front of the hotel is achievable if you persist. It really is wacky and a little bizarre as a hotel purporting to be a museum of artefacts as well as a going concern. You can make your own mind up about the Bar man, is he an exhibit I pondered, charming nonetheless ? There a lift from the 1920s servicing the building....well it's survived 90 years so what could possibly go amiss? I enjoyed using it a real throw back. There's ample seating at the front of the hotel to enjoy an aperitif. The charming and considerate Owner/ Manager busies herself talking to guests and properly fussing and clearing. It's not too expensive to stay. The room was fine, evidence of it being a bit tired here and there, but frankly it was clean and adequate plus. The bathroom was again ok, the shower in the bath a bit hit and miss, but it did the job. The evening meal in again a adequate dining room was passable. A fair choice on the menu, the prices I felt would need supporting with more stand-out fare, but it filled a space. The co-ordination of food to table, not mine, but others I observed and heard was a bit unpredictable. The breakfast offering was satisfactory vast buffet offerings of full English pre-requisites. Was the toaster a museum exhibit or functional ?....The self serve coffee arrangement baffling and one jug of milk in the cereal offering made it awkward, but hey ho such is detail. Lots of people seem to return looking at the guest book and comments, so it clearly appeals to an audience. I live relatively near and needed this as a one off, so wouldn't expect to return. If you don't do quirky and unusual-ish give it a miss otherwise enjoy!

I had to go and ask for a glass of water. Completely different to the very attentive server we had on the last visit. Also, it wasn't obvious how pushchairs or wheelchairs can access the front of the hotel? I ended up pulling the pushchair up the stairs but no one helped or pointed out an easier route.

Walpole bay Team were incredible, all staff worked together, it was magic, highly motivated staff lead by a good team leader. My last morning here today Monday to enjoy a wonderful breakfast before departing back to Wales. Thank you to Jane Bishop and the family team for a wonderful time. Certainly all worked hard to deliver a wonderful weekend to remember. Have visited in the past and not the last. Best wishes to all the staff.

Stopped by here on our way back to our B&B late one evening looked inviting and was intrigued to see the museum etc Was taken aback how welcoming staff were and how kooky and cool hotel was also noticed how clean everything looked Had cream tea out side on the verandah was lovely presented tea was lovely coffee was fair ... Scone was warm and served with lots of Jam and whipped cream not clotted Second night we took tea and fruit cake cake was ok not outstanding but tasty but the surroundings and sea view and sunset made up for it After a busy day an hour chilling drinking tea eating cake was lovely

Breakfast was buffet style but the fried eggs were cooked to order A very comprehensive breakfast menu. Food nice and hot and waitresses would get you anything you ordered. Dinner needed ordering 30 minutes before yon wanted it as it was all freshly cooked. A 5 star dinner experience. Good range of wines and spirits available in the bar I would highly recommend

The Walpole has made a reputation for itself after its fallout with Mrs Polizzi of the Hotel Inspector tv show. I have not seen the episode but a group of WI ladies from our village went there for afternoon tea and my wife and a friend were so impressed that they booked us in for Sunday lunch. We generally eat in a group of eleven but because of it being Father's Day several friends were pre booked. We were not pre booked as my daughter had gone to a concert and one grandson was on his way to France with his school and my son's family were watching my grandson in a football tournament. They reached the final and lost on penalties and, yes, my grandson followed in tradition by missing his.The Walpole has a very pleasant outside terrace which was full we had a drink in the memorabilia packed bar, in fact everywhere is full of mementoes including a moped! The menu is large and traditional I had the pate followed by the pork, then Black Forest gateau, cheese and biscuits and finally coffee and mint. Others had the mushrooms and everybody else had for main the roast beef and fruit salad. We all enjoyed the meal, the restaurant was full and lively, the pianist played non stop, the waiters served silently, though one girls black tights should have have been dustbinned as they were so laddered. We paid out £32 each which included the bar bill and wine so it is good value for money as long as you do not expect the waiting staff to know the food's provenance, seasonability and if it is sustainable.

My husband and I were celebrating a special wedding anniversary. A family member treated us with a prepaid voucher for a cream tea with sandwiches. The visit to be taken any day of our choice but to let the hotel know first, as they do have functions. On arrival we presented ourselves to reception and were asked if we would like to have our tea outside on the edwardian verandah or stay inside. We opted to stay inside. On arrival at our table it was prettily arranged with a matching tea service. We chose egg mayo sandwiches which came with a small salad and then came the scones. We both remarked that it was one of the best cream teas we had ever had. The scones were warm, there were lashings of cream and strawberry jam and they even provided butter. The pot of tea came with extra water and it was hot. The waitress service was efficient. This hotel has a small museum which we browsed around on leaving. Don't missed the naughty cat picture. It is amusing and I would have liked a postcard of it. The hotel was built in 1914 and it reminded us of some of the hotels in the Eastbourne area. It is rather quaint but it is honest in its advertising. It does not set out to be a high class establishment but a comfortable place to stay awhile.

We were blown away with the superb roast lunches on offer, succulent lamb with all the trimmings, fine wine, great attentive service and almost excellent value. We would usually avoid having a roast lunch in any hotel, this was a worthwhile exception!

A bit of a strange experience, part hotel, part museum, bit quirky with all the mementoes of a bygone era hanging about the place and some 'interesting' wall art. But overall, a tired, run down sea side hotel in desperate need of some TLC to bring in anywhere near its former glory. I feel for the owners of such establishments, its hard to make a living in a depressed market but it costs little to pick up the litter outside, clean the windows and fix the odd broken thing. The room seemed clean enough and the bed was comfy but everything was so 'tired'. I suppose you could call it 'authentic' but to be honest, it just needed some love and a bit of attention to the non critical essentials and it would be so much better. Staff were friendly enough, the night porter was happy to chat and able to add some value to the stay by explaining about the wall art and explaining some of the history. Breakfast was a self service affair, OK, but the same non critical issues, like who puts out cooked food for self service but then doesn't ensure that there is somewhere to put the bains marie lid while you serve yourself so the customer ends up juggling lid, plate, serving spoon... it reeks of poor knowledge of lay up and just adds to the 'quirky' experience - if I could offer one tip - put your toast in BEFORE you 'help yourself' as the bread would have toasted quicker if left out in the sun! Overall OK - I have stayed in some right dumps that dare to call themselves hotels and I work in the industry so perhaps I am being picky but it could be oh so much better but equally oh so much worse!

Apart from the refreshing and well plated melon starter, the rest of the meal went downhill as fast as Deitling hill! The roast lamb main was accompanied by over-cooked, suckable vegetables. The desserts looked and tasted like a basic supermarket frozen range. We didn't bother staying for the included-in-the-price coffee. This disappointing dining experience was a strange mix of school dinners, 70s Berni Inn and Butlin's holiday camp, pleasantly accompanied by a piano medley of wartime favourite tunes. To add to our woes, we were seated in front of a wall featuring the illiterate scribbles and talentless drawings of some local "artist" that did nothing to enhance the atmosphere of this jaded dining venue.

70 of us had lunch at this hotel. I began with melon, attractively presented, followed by roast lamb, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, peas and carrots. Next came lemon and ginger cheesecake (which I would say was the weakest link) then the cheeseboard with British and continental cheese and various crackers, plus coffee and chocolate. All the party enjoyed the experience. There were good choices to be had.

It is always lovely to revisit the Walpole Bay Hotel in Cliftonville [not in Margate which Trip Advisor thinks it is]for afternoon tea and be as it was a hundred years ago. Afternoon tea consists of a scone, jam, cream butter and a pot of tea.[I always have Earl Grey tea which is nkt loose tea] You can add sandwiches or a cake and I really like the beef sandwiches which you can have with horrible horseradish, mucky mustard or plain. Trip Advisor now doesn't seem to want prices which I find essential in a review or to give the web address of the hotel. Its good to ride the 1927 built lift down to the gents in the basement or upstairs to the ladies on the fiorst floor.and to look at all the collectibles from the 19th and 20th centuaries on the first and second floors. For some strange reason Trip Advisor does not allow you now to put in the web address. The hotel was built in 1914, extended in 1927 and closed in 1989 and reopened by the present owners in 1995.

Being a returning old Margatonian, I thought that it would be good fun to re-visit the Walpole Bay Hotel for afternoon Tea. I was absolutely right, good fun, pleasant staff and I am sure that some of the Margate memorabilia that is on show in the 'reception' area was stuff that my mum chucked out over 60 years ago, Tea and scones were pleasant and not expensive. Taking a couple of friends around Kent we ended up at the Walpole Bay hotel for dinner which coincided with their monthly jazz evening. The Restaurant as usual was at it's best in terms of ambience comfort and good service. The meals again was of a good standard and reasonably priced but as for the musical content forget it. I do not like to criticise, not being a musician but the standard was quite low and I will not be attending another of their Jazz evenings. The Hotel is still the wonderful old place that we love and it will most certainly see our presence again in their Restaurant soon.

For the first time my family felt being ignored because we did not wanted any drinks and only interested in food. For 40 minutes nobody came to take our food order although place got busy only 20minutes after we were sitting already (all new seated customers received their drinks). Ended up getting fish and chips take away from different place. Food on the menu looked promising but we left hungry. Do not like leaving negative reviews but after consulting the family, decided to share our experience.
