Great Sunday Lunch with choices of gluten free and dairy free. The chef has really thought about a menu including those with dietary requirements. Much appreciated and super tasty

Cosy, chilled atmosphere, superb service, fantastic food. Allergy aware with no fuss. I cannot fault this place. Service was quick, professional and friendly, even on a Saturday evening when they were under extra pressure with the system down. Specials of salmon tartare and duck breast with pears and fennel were interesting and excellent - French country cooking at its best and at a very reasonable price. I felt completely comfortable eating solo in a nice cosy corner of the warm and atmospheric upstairs restaurant and the staff dealt with my (complicated) allergies exactly the way I would hope - they ask, they don’t make a fuss, they go and check, and they don’t make you feel like a weirdo. This is the way good quality, value-for-money dining out should be. A rarity to be celebrated.

The best meal we had in York by a good margin. Some delay in starting because two large parties were in at the same time but this was dealt with to our satisfaction. Good atmosphere, highly recommended.

Booked here as the reviews for Sunday Lunch were good. Staff were excellent and I couldn't fault the welcome and service. Food let it down. My starter was lukewarm, though my friend's was piping hot, so didn't make a fuss. Sunday lunch was then also lukewarm and the beef was quite chewy. We did comment at this point and the waitress was lovely and did ask if we wanted extra gravy to warm everything up, which we declined as we had eaten at least half by then. Could also have done with some green vegetables as it was just carrots, parsnips and a gratin. Didn't have dessert. Food was a bit of a disappointment considering we thought we had done our research.

I've been a customer here for 15 years and each time, the food is outstanding. The restaurant itself is a beautiful pub on Walmgate. The food is spectacular. Over 15 years I've had duck confit, cassoulet, potato au gratin, a Moroccan feast and sublime chicken. They help me discover food like caviar that I'd never normally eat. The service is perfect. The staff deserve full credit for the work they do. Thank you all and here's to another 15 years.

A great little restaurant that has a great selection of French cuisine and wines (of course!). I arrived early but was shown straight to my table (slightly wobbly table) by very friendly staff. From taking my food and drink order to service etc was quick, even whilst the restaurant was busy. The food quality and portion size was enough to satisfy the palate and cost. Overall, a great little find and would recommend visiting. Will definitely go back again (but when it’s quieter).

Enjoyed an excelent meal as a couple, chosing from the three course early bird menu; both of us enjoyed our choices and the food was very good value. Staff were friendly and helpful, with a good ambience in the upstairs dining area. I would recomend the restaurant as a place to visit in an area awash with places to eat.

First, let me say that the staff and the level of service we received was exemplary. Very friendly and informative. We had traditional Sunday beef roast. All I can say is that if it is traditional to serve tough meat at a Sunday roast, they did a great job. We asked for steak knives and still struggled through cutting the meat. Overall The taste was fine but nothing to write home about. Yorkshire pudding was great. Veggies were good as well. It's all about the meat. Sorry this could not be a more positive review

We went to the Mediterranean Seafood Event and we were not disappointed. I have to say that this by far, was the best restaurant meal I have ever had! The textures, flavours and combinations of each course was expertly put together. The wine choices were amazing and the staff who looked after us were friendly, professional and were clearly passionate about the food they were serving. An absolutely fantastic culinary experience and we will be back. Thank you to all the team @Chopping Block :)

The Restaurant is upstairs above the bar area. Did not visit the Bar or Garden. The decor is very nice. Our Waiter was very pleasant and helpful, however completely overworked. He was very apologetic for the delays. Occasionally he was assisted by the lady looking after the Bar. (she was very busy also downstairs). Long wait for drinks and even longer for food. Starters were lovely, but very small portions. Lamb main was average, sadly chicken dish, dry and stringy was inedible. Wine was good. As a gesture, gin and tonics taken off the final bill. Unfortunately, will not return.

I had booked this restaurant on recommendation from their sister restaurant (Melton). It is a friendly place with decent service, however, the food did not fully live up to our expectations, it was not bad, however, also not as good as we had hoped for. The portions are not big but well presented, for starter we had scallops and the mussels, all was good and tasty but small and only two scallops in each portion. The main course of confit duck and the fish were good and well presented, however, the rump-steak was very chewy and cooked to well-done rather than medium - that being said the gravy was excellent.decent wine selection and good beer. The staff are good and friendly, it isn’t cheap eating off the a la carte menu, we had hoped for a bit more up-market cooking. If I could give 3.5 stars for this I would, it is not a 3 and not a 4 neither.

we heard good reports about the chopping block but i cannot say that we had a great experience. first of all, we were seated near the kitchen and every time a member of staff walked by, our whole table and plate would shake. the food was not good enough. they serve their signature "home made bread" at the beginning of the meal and it happened that i had the same unimpressive bread with every course. not that important but overall the food was below par.

We ate here one evening when we were in York. I found it in the Good Food Guide, but it also does well here. We found the food delicious, and the prices – including the good wine list - reasonable. Both good reasons to visit, which I would recommend. However, when we were there, the service didn’t match the quality of the food. Firstly, my wife’s absolute top favourite starter was on the specials board and it elicited a smile of eager anticipation, but when we tried to order it we were told it was no longer available. Why had nobody removed it / crossed it out / written "sold out" by it? Very irritating. We asked for a jug of water which took an improbable amount of time to arrive (I think they had forgotten about it). Then, despite being a slow night – three tables, six covers - the servers were frequently nowhere to be seen, to the point where, when I wanted to get the bill, after waiting about 10 minutes, I had to go to the kitchen – the only place I could see anyone - to ask the chef for the bill.Yes, we would certainly eat here again, the food is well worth the 5 stars I’ve given it, but it would be nice if the service were bucked up a little.

Our party of 6 visited for dinner last night. We're all pretty discerning diners, and the food here met all expectations. The menu is interesting and varied with a strong french influence. The seafood dishes were particularly strong - the pike quinelle was beautiful and light, the seafood ragout and hake special also stood out. With all main courses priced at under £20, it's outstanding value for the quality.

Had the pleasure of having a Sunday lunch at the chopping block and it was epic. The food was delicious, the service was brilliant and it was such an interesting building to visit too. We chose from the set menu 2 courses for £15 & 3 for £17 I believe! Between us all we had brie wedges or garlic mushrooms to start. Great size portions which was just what the people with larger appetites wanted to see! For main we all opted for the pulled beef in a Yorkshire pudding which came with quite possibly the best ever roast potatoes we've collectively ever eaten in a restaurant. They were truly very special, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. A work of kitchen artwork. Compliments to the chef the pulled beef in the Yorkshire pudding was delicious all in all. To finish we all had the sticky toffee pudding and it was just the right size to completely stuff us all. The pub was very interesting, it use to be a rope making facility and it's made apparent by the decor with ropes dotted about. There is also a history timeline of the pub including times when the pub had been flooded in the past. Really brilliant place to eat with very friendly and helpful service. Highly recommended.

Our first meal out post lockdown, and it was a real treat. An imaginative range of dishes including lots of vegetarian options for one of our party. Also impressed by the range of wines available as 50cl carafes, about half a dozen each of red and white. We had booked a table for 2 pm on the last Sunday in may. On entry the waiter was very friendly and helpful as my mother is disabled and can’t climb stairs. We had the choice of the back room or courtyard, we opted for the courtyard as the sun was shining. There was plenty of room out there and picnic benches, my only problem my mum, my son and me have big bottoms so the benches weren’t ideal for us. But it definitely wouldn’t stop me visiting again. The waitress soon took our order for drinks while my husband and son parked the car, my father was very happy with the choice of ales and wine was very tasty. After everyone arrived we ordered our food, it wasn’t too long before it came. The plates were lovely and warm and Yorkshire pudding was perfect with plenty of beef and roast potatoes and gravy, there were leeks in cheese sauce and diced carrot, swede and beetroot. All five of us thoroughly enjoyed our food and were full but had to have pudding. The cherry posset was delicious and the others said the sticky toffee pudding was very tasty. Service and food was perfect and we would definitely recommend it. It was well worthy of the £15 tip.

This was our first night away together as a couple since the start of lockdown and we were really looking forward to the set menu we had seen. However we were left very disappointed. We both ordered the Yorkshire pudding and pulled beef and were planning to have dessert as our second course. When our food arrived it was a massive let down!! The Yorkshire pudding was like a squashed pancake and even though the plate was red hot to touch, the food was barely luke warm, including the vegetables. We asked for some salt and the waiter came back with a small plate full of sachets which would’ve been fine had there have not been half of the sachets already used!! Not really good when cleanliness is even more important than ever at the minute. No one even came back to check if everything was ok with the food like they had done with other tables. Because of the issues we decided to not stay for the second course. A final point as well is that it shouldn’t take nearly 20 minutes to receive the bill either. My husband wasn’t going to pay but i just wanted to get out of there sharpish. Needless to say we won’t return!!

We read a few good reviews on the Sunday lunch and ignored the bad ones, because were pretty easily pleased. The starters and kids meals were ok, but we then waited 45 minutes for the beef dinners and were very disappointed, they eventually came out 5 minutes before the veg and were fairly cold by then, the Yorkshire pudding on one had not risen and the beef appeared braised rather than roasted. The lunches were completely tasteless and unseasoned so my partner didn’t eat hers, which said it all given how hungry she was after the wait. One of the lunches was refunded which was fair enough, but it was the first time I have ever heard my partner complain in over 10 years and nobody seemed overly interested. To be fair our eldest lad (13) said his burger was nice, but he could have eaten the whole meal again and it’s for an adult...We left without the kids having desert and took them for an ice cream instead because were pretty gutted.

We came on a weekday during York Restaurant week for their offer menu. The offer itself of a £5 main course sized pie was hard to dispute, though the food itself was only ok. The pastry was really undercooked and pale, and the chips were a little greasy. Eagerly anticipating the return to normality with a family celebration....we excitedly entered the Chopping Block. The one saving grace of the meal was a very delicious fish ragout, but the rest was a complete travesty. From a 'Yorkshire' burger as dry as plasterboard and Beouf Bourgignone with average flavour to limp fries swathed in oil and homemade bread rolls that could genuinely resist crushing under foot. We know from experience that food is typically hit and miss at this restaurant but I don't think we'll give it another try. A fairly decent sticky toffee pudding isn't enough of a reprieve I'm afraid...head to Wetherspoons instead. At least they are predictable, tasty and fast and a meal for four (without alcohol) won't cost £90.....

Thankfully the Chopping Block is now on deliveroo, so we ordered a birthday meal for delivery. The food arrived very quickly, still warm, and was delicious. The confit duck leg lends itself well to delivery, and would probably have been fine to warm up a little, but warming some plates in the oven before the food arrives also works well. The chips are worth a special mention. We already had a home baked cake, so didn't order any desserts this time - good excuse to have a meal from the Chopping Block again very soon! We sat down and had to wait 20 minutes for someone to take us order (drinks and food). Not a big problem but it would be nice if we can have a drink sooner. The food was good, I ordered the vegetarian Sunday Roast. The right amount of food! Would come back again for the Sunday Roast.

Amazing Sunday lunch, best pork I've had! A delicious pork roast dinner, honey and pepper glazed, with the most humongous home made Yorkshire pudding and yummy parsnips... the only negative was that I couldn't fit it all in my belly! Highly recommended.

We used a Gourmet Dinning voucher from our sister. We had three courses, a bottle of lovely wine & a pint of beer for only £63.50!!! Great service, gorgeous food & great value for money!!!! Definitely recommend this place anyone.

Popped into the Old Walmgate Ale House to be confronted with a new name and menu. Luckily, the sticky toffee pudding has remained on their menu and is as tasty as ever. Enjoyed the garlic mushrooms and prawn cocktail. Then was staggered at the size of the portions of the fish cake and beef stew Yorkshire pud..... Hallelujah!!! Delicious and ample. And..... They have added little touches like complimentary bread and fried wonton wrappers at the beginning of the meal, and caramelised nuts at it's conclusion. A triumph - well done all!!!!!! Welcome back xx

We found this restaurant to be great value for money if you go for their set menu option. You get two courses for about 16 pound. There was a wide range of options in that set menu. They also had a 3 course menu option. The bar is down stairs and restaurant upstairs. A little tight for space but we have seen much worse. Meals came out quickly and were very nice. Can certainly recommend the Yorkshire pudding.

Came here for a Christmas dinner. Lovely, characterful and cosy building. Nice selection of ales. The food was lovely but I felt the portions were very much on the small side unfortunately.

Disappointing visit. Pie on specials board said it came with roasties and veg - our pies arrived without either. When I queried it the waiter said this was how it came. Not the case when we checked the board before paying! Told the staff, who apologised but handed us our bill without any rectification. Garlic mushrooms also came without their bread. Can forgive a mistake but not the lack of effort to put it right. Won't be reccomending

Half the family had Sunday lunch here and it was so delicious that the other half returned for dinner. Great service and filling good, it was a shame to leave some but we were stuffed.

Came here for a birthday meal with work colleagues and friends. The pub downstairs is nice and cosy and had a games room which looked inviting, we wished we had just come here for drinks after eating rather than for our meal. Food was average, some of it tasted like it had been made in bulk and reheated in the microwave. Same can be said for the bread which was soggy rather than crispy, easy giveaway. We thought the price seemed excessive compared to the portion sizes and quality of the food itself. Would have stayed for a drink after but having asked the waitress 3 times for the bill before she finally brought it over, we were ready to leave.

Popped in on the off chance, glad we did, the most amazing food, my friend from LA had the pheasant, I had the Italian meatloaf, so awesome, helpful and friendly staff, the price for 2 starters and mains, 2 wines and 2 Bailey's hot chocolate barely broke £70, scandously low for amazing food and service, get there if you can, you def won't be disappointed

Best Sunday lunch I’ve tried in the city centre by far! Make sure you book in!!!! Only criticism would be that they didn’t have enough gravy but I’m sure we could have all asked!

Had Sunday lunch here on 11 November, although not too far from the centre of town, the place is just far enough away to escape the madding crowds. Food and service were excellent.

Haphazard service, terrible beer and really below average food. The menu is very limited and food had a reheated frozen, fried taste. Had to ask 3 times for the bill. All in the party were unimpressed. Typical Tourist venue that doesn’t care. Avoid

What a gem in the tough competition of the city of York. We had 3 courses from the set menu (£18.50)expecting them to be small but we couldn't be more wrong. Garlic mushrooms were great but the star of the show was the pulled beef in a Yorkshire pudding. Great service and we will be back.

We've eaten many times at Walmgate Ale House, since its transformation from Ellerkers many years ago, and in its previous incarnation as Meltons Too. It's a fantastic venue, warm without being too cosy; the food is imaginative and carefully prepared; and the staff are excellent. Definitely a place to get away from the tourist run, and to linger over the superb menu.

Gorgeous friendly restaurant. Amazing food and service, definitely worth the mo ey for a special evening. We had my grandson there with us and they included him when taking food orders, the customer service is second to none. A little on the expensive side however having said that it's not so much that it would scare me away, you certainly get what you are paying for. On a final note, Hannah our waitress was an absolute diamond and the more senior lady were was also a credit to the restaurant. We'll done guys, will be back soon.
