A rather pedestrian evening menu, and no bitter beer on offer. Stick to breakfast - which is excellent - in my opinion!

This was our first visit to The Churchill visit since the refurbishment, the hotel has had complete shuffle round and not its all good. The staff are very pleasant but all look scruffy. The new Wellington bar is very dark, don't take the menus in here you can't read them, not that we stayed long the staff moved us to the dining room after asking us twice despite being early for the dinner reservation. The dining room is crowded, very little room between the tables and doesn't look or feel like a bistro as it's supposed to be.However, the food is fabulous, all served to perfection and beautifully presented. This is the one and only reason to come here, we have never been disappointed. As locals we were a novelty to the staff who tried several times to add our bill to a particular room.We will come back for dinner so look after your chef please.

I've already reviewed the Churchill Hotel, including this restaurant, but will repeat it here.We were treated to a seven course tasting menu cooked by Head Chef Kevin during our stay, and wow! The food was sublime - delicious and beautifully presented. This is clearly a young man who knows his way around a kitchen. He genuinely uses locally sourced products and foraged ingredients to create unusual, but tasty, dishes. His passion for high quality restaurant food is evident.Other diners opted for more standard fayre, but from what I could see this too looked well presented and beautifully cooked. I've heard the hand cut chips are superb, but didn't try them myself. If you're visiting York, take a 5 minute stroll up Bootham from the Minster and check out The Piano Restaurant. Well worth a visit - a gem of a restaurant.

We enjoyed a family Sunday lunch at the Churchill. The decor of the bar and restaurant is quite arty and stylish, not the traditional interior we expected, but nice nonetheless. While perusing the menu in the bar, we asked the waitress to elaborate on some of the dishes on offer. She didn't know what they were either, and had to go and find out. It demonstrates a lack of training when the wait staff don't know the menu. That said, the food was interesting and quite adventurous for Sunday lunch. Not that the in-laws in their mid-70s were too impressed with the rhubarb and custard which resembled nothing like. However the Yorkshire puddings rose to the occasion which meant The Churchill was on to a winner. It represented very good value and the next time the opportunity arises to have Sunday lunch in York I won't hesitate to choose The Churchill again.

4 Of us enjoyed a nice dining experience at the piano restaurant starting with home made bread with 3 spreads including kipper flavoured butter which is great if you enjoy kippers. We had a mix of starters the favourite being lamb sweetbreads. Mains consisted of rump steak, cod and chorizo, the steak was cooked to perfection and succulent whilst the cod was delicate and flaky including flavoured dips including a pungent one made from capers. Here is a Chef who is imaginative and who is not afraid to experiment with different flavour combinations. Whilst I believe this will not always work I think it's also a positive attribute. The proof of the pudding (which we were too stuffed to have) is we all enjoyed our dining experience at this restaurant and all of us would like to dine here one day in future.

Visited on a Saturday evening for dinner with my wife and our young daughter. We were in York that weekend and I wanted to go somewhere nice for an evening meal, so picked this place based on the 2 AA Rosettes, the easy online booking and also because they had a children's menu, usually an indication that children are not frowned upon.... usually. The initial greeting was fine and so was the initial service although the waiter seemed perturbed that we would dare bring a child into a restaurant with a children's menu. Equally as concerning to him was that my wife would request a non-alcoholic cocktail (thought he was going to pass out), they managed to put something together, wasn't nice. The wine list looked reasonable, but I'm not going to drink a bottle on my own.... they had 2 (yes two) wines available by the glass. I've never been to a fine dining restaurant with so few wines by the glass. It's 2015 for goodness sake, they really should take a trip into this century. The house white sauvignon blanc was fine though.I should say the room itself I liked, nicely decorated in a 1930's style I would say and there was a live pianist. So, on to the food. We started with a complimentary apple appetiser, a nice touch but not a good dish. However, my scallop starter was good and the pork belly main was very good and the highlight of the meal for me. My wife has the soup to start which she said was very good, and the duck for main which was also nice. After we asked for the dessert menu, there was an inexcusably long wait for them to be brought followed by another long wait for the deserts to arrive. My dessert, some kind of black forest deconstruction, looked nice but lacked any real flavour which was a disappointment. The bill was delivered promptly, to top off the evening they'd charged me for two bottles of water when we only had one, a neat trick. I couldn't be bothered to argue by this point and even left a tip (an unfortunate force of habit). The total came to £110.Overall, the chef can cook and I enjoyed the majority of the food which is the main point. But it's certainly a place that suffers from delusions of grandeur and there are several aspects to the service and offering that could be improved substantially.

Our party of four were unable to book a restaurant in the centre of York on a Saturday night, so we took a gamble and agreed to try The Piano as It was only a short walk from the City centre. On arrival we had a pre-dinner drink in the small but cosy bar whilst we looked at the extensive three course set menu. Not wanting the full three courses, we were informed that the price could be adjusted accordingly. The dining room is nicely designed with an electronic(?) piano playing subtle background music. The inclusion of a free taster course to our meal choices was very welcome. Plus the great man watched over us as we ate!!! All our meals were excellent, as was the service. We were glad we decided on the Piano. Thanks for a great night.

My husband has recently moved up North and I wanted us to go somewhere special midweek for an anniversary dinner and I was eager to show him what beautiful York - one of my favourite cities - has to offer. Given that it's called "The Piano Restaurant" we envisaged some love music - mother reason why we booked it - something fun but not too heavy on a school night. The restaurant advertises itself as fine dining establishment - it couldn't be further from it. We have eaten at many done dining and Michelin started restaurants and the comparison is non existent. The location itself was great and the decor was lovely with a grand piano in the corner. However that's where the positives start and end.The piano was just part of the decor - no pianist - resist recorded piano music in the background - hugely disappointing. I ordered the blue cheese soufflé to start which was meant to come with baby leaves and a walnut dressing. The soufflé had a burnt top, tasted eggy without a hint of blue cheese and the baby leaves came just as they are - dry with no walnut dressing - and that seemed to be the theme of the meal. My husband had the soup - which was at best fine and the potted shrimp - very average with microscopic shrimp and a bland tomato sauce.I ordered the venison for mains which was supposed to be in a rich sauce with beetroot crisps and a side salad. I got a small pot stuffed fill of shredded venison on a very sticky sickly sweet goo (it can not be described as a sauce) with beetroot crisp that were burnt and blackened on one side and served good side up - they were in edible. When i showed them to the waiter he apologised took the dish away to the kitchen and came back a few minutes later with what looked to be fresh unburnt crisps. To my horror when I picked up the crisps they were burnt on the underside - they had very clearly turned them over. I told the waiter again and they made a fresh lot which in the end were the only edible part of my meal. I otherwise had mouthfuls of shredded sticky sweet meet that was just unpalatable. Needles to say I didn't finish it. My husband ordered the haddock which was over cooked with an overly starched dense white sauce. After a very disappointing starter and main course I refused to try my luck with the dessert but my husband wanted and hoped he could cleanse his mouth with a good tasting pudding. He ordered the summer fruit pudding - and it was a bas move. It was dense, lacked any discernible flavour or punch of fruit or the freshness of a summer fruit pudding. Again it was served as a big lump of dry pudding without a sauce/cream/custard. He had to ask for some cream to help it go down because of its density. We returned most of our dishes uneaten and when asked by the waiter at then end how our meal was - we told them we didn't enjoy it - all the food was dry, poor in flavour and not executed well. He didn't seem particularly bother - said "sorry about that" and went ahead and for us our bill. We paid just shy of £100 for two people without alcohol and although we have paid much more than that for meals at true fine dining establishments it was expensive for an in edible meal with poor service and a fake piano music. Would never go back or recommend it to anyone. The chef needs changing - out of the 6 courses we had there seems to be nothing on that menu that redeems it as a decent restaurant let alone one that markets itself as a fine dining experience.

Went with friends for Sunday lunch and unfortunately for majority of the time we were the only people in the restaurant so sadly lacked any atmosphere - slightly strange therefore that we were advised the table was only ours for 2 hours when booking. We had high hopes of a 2 AA rosette establishment but although the food was in the main satisfactory and certainly £19.95 for 3 courses and coffee was a surprisingly low set price several small issues blighted our lunch. Nice bread and oil/balsamic brought to table but no chance to enjoy as starters brought immediately after, no member of staff came to enquire if everything was satisfactory during any course (we had to flag a passing girl down to request more gravy), tired celery and past their best grapes on the cheeseboard and no choice given for cheese and no information from staff of what it was when brought to table. After reading previous reviews perhaps we should have visited on a different day of the week when the a la carte menu is available but do not think we will return.

I came here with my girlfriend for a romantic meal and it did not disappoint. The food was excellent quality, being very well presented. The portions are a good size and the food is cooked to the highest standard. The desserts stood out as being particularly good; my girlfriend had lemon posset which was amazing. The only criticisms are that it was a shame that the piano isn't actually played by a real person and is simply a recording and also that the wine we picked (a pinot grigio I think) wasn't as good as I would have hoped it to be from a restaurant of this standard. However, these are only small points and I wouldn't hestite to come back.

The food is modern cuisine, done very well indeed and there's a good choice on the a la carte menu for £29.95 for three courses. I preferred my starter and dessert to my cod main course, but then that's often the case for me. The deserts (a deconstructed strawberries and cream and a lemon posset with foams and raspberry sorbet) were stunning. We came to this restaurant for the second time in a month, this time with friends. The restaurant is part of the Churchill Hotel a rather chic hotel just outside the city walls in York. The setting is rather plush with a circular ceiling with hidden lighting - very atmospheric, and splendid views onto the gardens. There was a wonderful pianist playing a grand piano gently and soothingly in the background. After a drink from the very well stocked bar we settled at our table for a culinary delight. The waitress and maître de were excellent, very attentive and helpful. After a short deliberation we decided upon the remarkably reasonable 3-course menu which is only £29.95 per person!!We started with quail breast and East Coast Crab which were all fantastic, well prepared well presented and top notch. There also followed a platter of bread with 3 different flavoured butters and jars of balsamic oil and olives. The wine list is extensive, and is very reasonably priced, although our first choice was unavailable. A second bottle was chosen, and in the end turned out to be the perfect accompaniment to our meal. My wife had the sea trout , our friends had pork (loin poached and roasted) and lamb whilst I ventured onto the Yorkshire beef fillet at a small extra charge. All were so well presented and served as well as any top restaurant in the greater York area. After placing our orders we were presented with a complimentary dish of asparagus mousse (foam) with dried parma? ham which tasted fantastic. My beef was with no exaggeration the best I have tasted in a long time, cooked to perfection, presented very professionally and tasted as good as it looked. We then finished with a selection of sweets, lemon posset, carrot cake and a selection of cheeses from a fantastic selection of locally sourced cheeses. What a wonderful find. The night passed by with the best food I have experienced in a long time, great company and a wonderful setting with serene music to lull you, a truly unforgettable meal, that I'm sure we'll be talking about for a long time. We were fortunate enough to be able to use our Gourmet Card to receive a discount on the bill, but having been earlier this month am positive we will most definitely return, because even at full price, the quality of the ingredients and cooking represent most excellent value for money. Thank you for such a wonderful evening, we're already looking forward to next time.

My husband and I have been eyeing up the menu here for sometime, and we finally managed to get round to visiting last night. We had high expectations, and hoping it would be worth the 150 mile round trip, especially to visit. We definitely were not disappointed. The wine list is extensive, and is very reasonably priced, although our first choice was unavailable. A second bottle was chosen, and in the end turned out to be the perfect accompaniment to our meal. An amuse-bouche of pigs cheek terrine and crispy pancetta was an unexpected surprise. I'm not a huge fan of pork, and would never have ordered this, but I'm so I glad I got the chance to try it. Absolutely delicious! Also served was some bread, with three varieties of butter, and olives. A nice touch. Our starters of East Coast Crab and Lowna Dairy Goats Cheese mouse looked and tasted fantastic. The complexity of flavour in my goats cheese dish was excellent, and visually it was stunning. My husband very much enjoyed his too, with a specific mention to the beautiful little watercress raviolles. For our mains, my husband ordered the Yorkshire Beef Fillet, and I, the Butter Poached Brine Chicken, with sides of green beans and triple cooked chips. The mains arrived, and again, the presentation was modern and exciting. After waiting a few minutes for our sides to arrive, we asked the waiter if they were on their way. He went to check, and informed us on his return that they had been missed off the check. He was very apologetic, and assured us they would be there very soon, and would not be included in the bill. Fair enough, these things happen and it was dealt with quickly and efficiently with no fuss. Not a problem, both sides were tasty and worth the wait. My chicken was the most moist and flavoursome chicken I have eaten in a long time, and the accompanying baby leek broth was seasoned to perfection. My husbands main was also delicious, and he says, cooked just perfectly. Dessert.... Wow, just.... wow. My husband had the Carrot Cake, it was so light and the flavours we delicious and delicate, with the mascapone sorbet being the perfect accompaniment. ( Recipe please? ;) ) I had the Strawberries and Cream. There was so many elements on the plate that were delicious and complimented each other perfectly. Strawberry fluid gel, chocolate powders, strawberry spherification, chocolate meringue and ganache, a tiny vanilla ice cream bomb, freeze dried strawberries, little dots of vanilla cream and chocolate caviar. Every mouth full was a treat, and I can't even begin to imagine the work that went into it. As a trainee Chef, I'd give anything to spend a day in this kitchen! Coffee and petit fours finished off a truly unforgettable meal, that I'm sure we'll be talking about for a long time. We were fortunate enough to be able to use our Gourmet Card to receive a discount on the bill, but we will most definitely return, because even at full price, the quality of the ingredients and cooking represent most excellent value for money. The Piano restaurant is part of the Churchill Hotel, where I was staying. It's excellent quality food and good attentive service - I had quail followed by sea trout and was not disappointed by either. Only downside was some undercooked broccoli as a side order and the plinky piano music playing in the background which can get a little wearisome. But these are minor quibbles. Thoroughly recommended.

With the menu outside looking intriguing we decided to try the 3 course A La Carte menu. After placing our orders we were presented with a complimentary dish containg a scallop and crispy chicken skin which was divine and set the tone for the rest of the evening so thank you chef! There also followed a platter of bread with 3 different flavoured butters and jars of oil and olives - all were nice but we noticed that there was no cocktail stick or similar available if we had wanted to eat the olives (without asking for one of course). Our starters were the soup of the day (garlic and pepper with cheese croutons - although the actual description was better than that) and East Coast Crab. Both dishes were superbly presented and cooked.Main courses were Butter poached brine chicken with a side order of new potatoes and the Poached duck egg. The tastes again were superb and set us both up nicely for a dessert of Lemon Posset. This dish had my wife saying that she now understood what the judges on shows such as Masterchef meant about tasting layers of flavours which complimented each other. I may have caused a slight heart attack amongst the dining service staff when after being presented with the bill I left the room with it but this was only because the low level of lighting in the room prevented me from actually being able to read the figures - even with my glasses on! - so I needed to find a brighter light.Another slight gripe - which I trust the chef will agree with me - is that salt and pepper pots should not be put onto tables. As we were relaxing with our coffee and tea I could hear a grinding noise as someone proceeded to put salt/pepper onto their meal. Why do people do that? Do they like insulting the chef by suggesting s/he has no idea how to season a dish properly? If people feel the need to add extra seasoning make them ask for it!!We sent our compliments to the chef at the time and do so again via this review - the level of skill and attention to detail given to all the dishes plus the incredible flavours that hit our palates puts a lot of other so-called fine dining establishments to shame especially at the price charged. Moral is if you enjoy good food this is the place to come.

We liked the look of the menu outside the hotel so we booked a table on Monday evening - we think that may have been our first mistake. Our second was to ask to have an apperitif in the bar as there was a misunderstanding and we were left with our menus for a good ten minutes before someone finally took our drink order. Apologies were made and the staff continued to be very good for the rest of our visit. We were given some very nice homemade bread with some interesting flavoured butters which were lovely and a goats cheese amuse bouche. I ordered the scallops for a starter which were fine but nothing special. My partner's ham hock starter had some lovely aniseedy flavours. We had a delicious wine (a malbec) with our mains. My partner had the guinea fowl which, again, was fine but not amazing and I had the steak. For the first time in my life I sent my meal back as it did not taste right. There was no beef flavour but more of what can only be described as a celery flavour. The waiting staff were very good about it, although I was asked twice what was wrong with it and they didn't offer to keep my partner's meal warm while they re-did mine (but neither did we ask for this). The next steak was marginally better but still not anything like I expected. It came with a very generous amount of tomatoes and thick cut chips. I decided not to have dessert and my partner had the rhubarb tasting plate which he enjoyed. We have eaten in similarly rated places before and have been impressed by the quality of food and range of flavours but, in my opinion, this place was very disappointing. We paid our £100 bill and went back to our hotel where I spent the wee hours of the morning throwing up. All in all not an experience I would wish on anyone.

I went to this restaurant with my family, looking forward to a good meal and we were all extremely disappointed with the whole experience. The starter(onion salad)was a joke. One spring onion, four pickled onions,a bit of truffle and "egg nog" in a jar. No salad at all!!! Main course of goat cheese lasagne was inedible and has since been taken off the menu,my partner had pork which was served virtually raw.Didn't even bother trying the desserts and at £130(minus my meal!!!),it was extremely poor and over priced. If you want a poor meal and an expensive one, this is the place to go!!! I have since complained to the manager and was just fobbed off.

Visited for an evening meal, the service was brilliant, very friendly and efficient. The restaurant has a nice vibe with the piano in the background allowing you to be able to talk as well as enjoy the music. The food was amazing, very full of flavour and filling, I had veal which was cooked to perfection. Overall an excellent experience.

This hotel was very good in terms of it's situation and boutique features within a very old house. However the food was over priced and pretentious trying to be in my view, something it wasn't. They claim that they have two rosettes for their food but how on earth they got them is beyond me. Choice was limited and when trying to change or ask for something different the answer was NO.This makes me feel that the dishes offered are not made on the premises. A good chef could always adjust his/her fair to accommodate their customers wishes.

Not realising that the Piano restaurant had its own Trip Advisor listing, I've just posted a review of the restaurant under the Churchill Hotel listing. I cannot recommend this venue highly enough, providing perhaps my best dining experience ever - I note the comments by Tim F and can only surmise that their experience was tainted by the 'busy party'. We had read the reviews and decided to go for my birthday meal,The sample menu outside looked great. So we booked in for 9 pm (a busy night or so i thought). We arrived and had a drink while waiting in the bar. We could hear a party going on in the dining room and as we sat to eat,the party left for another room. Which left us alone in the dining room. The starters arrived, mine a ham terrine with pineapple chutney which was devine. My wife had garlic mushrooms which she liked. So far so good,my wifes first choice for main course was not available so she went for the steak,Which to be honest was pretty standard pub grub, i chose the smoked haddock with poached egg which was very tasty, What there was of it, the haddock was no bigger than a match box, the poached egg swamped it,My starter was bigger ! This realy is a hard place to review, the food i had was excellent,But there was just not enough of it.The atmosphere was pretty bad,we ate while listening to the christmas disco blasting from the next room, the staff were clearing the party table and kept leaving the door open i had to keep getting up to close it ,For us the Piano certainly did'nt hit the highs the previous reviews sugested.

We had booked into the hotel on a deal which included dinner so we didn't know what to expect. At first glance there was a limited menu choice but very often quality can suffer with a large selection.Puzzled at the table setting of three knives and forks we soon discovered the reason when an extra course was served compliments of the chef. All the courses were cooked and presented really well and it was the little touches that made the difference such as warm crusty bread, two types of butter, olives and very tasty sauces etc. What more could you want when excellent food is accompanied by friendly staff and at a reasonable price of £29 per head. We shall certainly visit again the next time we are in York.

We had our wedding day dinner a year ago at Churchills and were so impressed with the food, service and ambience so when my mother in law suggested she took us out for our first anniversary we jumped at the chance. The menu was lovely firstly the set menu then the comfort menu so decisions, decisions! I opted for the set menu and to start venison tortellini which was beautiful but a little under seasoned so I did that myself, main course of cod loin, puy lentils with beetroot was devine, so well cooked and tasty. The mother in law with a small appetite tucked in to the calves liver which she pronounced was one of the best she had ever tasted, high praise indeed. The other half choose from the comfort menu and started with the fishcake which I assume was very good as it was devoured in no time!! Then to follow a very well cooked rare rump steak with peppercorn butter.Wine was really good, the service was very professional and attentive as we remembered from our special day. There are lots of good places to eat in York and just because this is an hotel does not mean that local people should not give it ago! Trust us the chef really knows his/her stuff here without the pretentious issues that appears to happen in many restaurants and even more important the price!! They do not take the P at all!! Well done to all the team.

This was my third visit to the Piano Restaurant for Sunday Lunch, and although I have reviewed it before, I have to say, this was the best Sunday Lunch I have eaten in a long time. The price of £19.95, for three courses, plus bread and olives, and coffee and mints is a fantastic bargain.I had a lovely fishcake to start with, with a wonderful buttery sauce, followed by tender Roast Pork with a huge Yorkshire Pudding. The Roast Potatoes were lovely and crispy and there was a terrific selection of vegetables, all freshly cooked and piping hot.My fruit tart pudding was very good, obviously freshly made with lovely thin crisp pastry. The Piano Restaurant is a lovely room, and the staff very pleasant and helpful, and work hard to make sure you are happy and have everything you need. There is also a very good winelist, with reasonably priced wines. All in all I could happily eat Sunday Lunch there every Sunday!

We chose to eat here on Saturday night because the menu looked very nice and we fancied eating somewhere that played jazz music so I made a booking online for 20:15. The hotel which the restaurant is part of seemed very busy and there was a wedding function going on next door. The outside of the hotel looked beautiful, very nice surroundings and lovely looking building. But this was spoiled somewhat when we had to step around a couple of drunken members sat on the steps from the wedding party going on next door. This is probably why we were left sitting, waiting for 45 minutes until we could be seated without any explanation from a member of staff. However, the restaurant and bar next to it are decorated very elegantly and the atmosphere was good too. Although there was a wedding right next door, we could only hear their music playing a handful of times but this may have ruined the atmosphere for some people. We were one of four tables to be seated at the same time and we had all been waiting for a long time. We had a complimentary entree from the chef which was very tasty. So I'm assuming it's not normal for guests to be waiting that long. The menu boasts the restaurant has been awarded two rosettes. The member of staff who looked after us was very professional, charming and attentive. Hat off to him for his service even though he looked like he was run off his feet. The food was very tasty and well prepared and we were certainly full by the end of it. Taking the price in to consideration, however, I don't think we received good value for money on this occasion. I can only put this down to staff being put under pressure from the wedding nextdoor.

We liked The Piano Restaurant in the Churchill Hotel. It was a beautiful room with a grand piano. Alas, there was no live piano music when we were there, but we liked the recorded piano music. Despite having reservations, we were first seated at a table in a cramped location, and we refused the table. Then we were seated at a better table. We had a wonderful dinner. To start, we had carrot soup and tomatoes and goat cheese. For the main plate, we had duck and beef. Both were excellent. We shared really really good orange sorbet for dessert. The room was pretty, the service attentive. When we are in York again, we'll go back.....and ask for a table in the window so we can see the beautiful garden.

Living in a village close to York we eat in the city fairly frequently and over many years have eaten at lots of the cities restaurants. The Piano Restaurant was recommended by friends and as we had never eaten there lunch was booked for last Sunday. What have we missed for all these years! As other reviewers have written, the whole experience was excellent, staff, ambience and especially the food. Good choice of menu and all three courses could not be faulted. There were four of us dining and each of us raved over the whole meal. Bread with olives and olive oil with balsamic to begin was gratis as were tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Meats excellently cooked as were the seven vegetables that included both roast and new potatoes. All courses were very well presented and in ample portions. Repeating myself, all of the staff could not have been more friendly or efficient. We will definitely return for an evening meal and I am sure that it will be put down as a fairly regular dining place. Try it.

The food presentation was outstanding and I'm almost out of superlatives. The steak was one of the most tender we have ever had the pleasure to eat, the vegetables cooked to perfection. It is on the more expensive side (well over £100 for two) but well worth it, quality does not come cheaply. Excellent meal here with great service. My wife and I both had salmon which had a lovely sauce that I cannot detail except that it included fresh watercress. Salmon was seared perfectly and tasted fresh. Waiter was very knowledgeable about the food (explained what an herb in the sauce was without having to go back to the kitchen to check) and gave us a brief history of the building. Desert was light and refreshing. Taking the meal early 5:30-6:30 has special pricing of two courses for less than £16 which is good value for this calibre of restaurant.

Visited the restaurant on Saturday 18th May after recommendation from a friend. Myself and my wife were pleasantly surprised to find such a gem that we had no idea about was in York.Arrived just after 8pm and was warmly greeted. After we were sat we were offered drinks and menus to which seemed small in choice with only 6 choices per course but the food sounded divine with a lot of imagination and locally sourced/named produce. After ordering we recieved complimentary bread, olives and dips which my wife proclaimed was some of the best she has ever tasted! Again before our starters arrived the helpful young man serving us brought over a yet again complimentary course of a deep fried ham hock dish with celeriac...Yummy. Starters of a roast quail dish was out of this world, my wife's scallops she assures me were excellent but she did not share! The mains we had both blew us away in presentation and taste, I have never had beef taste so good before and the pork fillet my wife chose was even more tastier than it looked, but again I was only told this as she refused to give any away! We both chose cheese for dessert and the best part was you could choose from a selection, each with its own description and history. Coffee was served with lovey sweet fancies of chocolates and macaroons by a yet again smiling young waiter who could not do enough for us. At £30 each for food I really I cannot fault the quality of this establishment, the chef and his team really do shine and the quality shows backed up by a good service team. We will be back!

Visited The Piano restaurant again last friday to treat a colleague who had retired. This time we sat in the actual room with the piano (which was being played beautifully). A gazpacho and whitby crab amuse bouche was excellent - cold and really zingy with lovely sweet crab. My orange glazed mackerel with kohlrabi and miso slaw was excellent and my companions linconshire quail (which I had last time) was in his words 'one of the nicest things he'd ever eaten. My main of halibut was plentiful and well seasoned (i think halibut needs salt) and it's accompaniments of artichokes and braised little gem lettuce with a caper emulsion made it an absolute joy to eat. My companion's monkfish special with samphire spinach et al was also, I am reliably informed 'superb'. I couldn't resist the urge for the chocolate fondant with black sheep ice cream as i'd been thinking about nothing else since I had it last time and it was every bit as good. My only quibble is similar to last time is that the waiting staff although in uniform were not uniform - top button done up/not done up. This is not a criticism of the waiting staff as they are excellent. Also, restaurants of higher accolades usually give you 'the lowdown' on exactly what you're being served when it is served. I feel i'm being overly critical but i genuinely believe in this restaurant and the tiniest effort could harvest bigger reward. Please Mr restaurant owner, splash out and treat your staff to a uniform that fits. I'll be back!! Thankyou

I've lived in York for 15 years and Saturday was the first time i'd visited either the Churchill hotel or indeed The Piano retaurant within. On arriving my companion and I were warmly greeted and had our coats taken before being guided to the bar area which seemed a nice ante room to the restaurant to enjoy an aperitif. Whilst enjoying drinks we browsed the menu which was reassuringly concise and full of local fayre. Orders were taken (once I was given a menu which wasn't empty!) and I ordered a bottle from the adequate wine menu to be opened to allow it to breathe a little.Having finished our drinks we were escorted to our table by our waiter for the evening who was smart, polite and couteous - nothing was too much trouble for him. However I spotted at least two waitresses who didn't appear to have taken the time to dress themselves quite so well - the tie of one almost above the collar of her shirt. The first thing we noticed about the dining room was it seemed quite full and noisy although there were christmas parties who obviously didn't beat the rush to what must be a popular venue and so were having their party in January. We were having the a la carte menu but our host still managed to furnish us with crackers et al [at the request of my companion]. Unfortunately the wine I ordered had not been opened although I would say this is the responsibility of the bar and not our waiter. We pulled crackers and the amuse bouche - a proper one, not a canape! - bread and olives arrived. The amuse bouche of a cauliflower concoction was as good as I have tasted in any michelin star restaurant and was thankfully a taste of what was to come. My starter of Lincilnshire Quail was once again as good a starter as I have tasted in the Michelin establishments I've visited and my companions [dived] Scallops were both plentiful and well cooked. The mains arrived. My turbot with pork rind and scallops was excellently cooked although I'd probably rather have had less scallop and more turbot - it was delicious. My companion had the Pork which was slightly over-seasoned for her palate although I tried it and, being a salt addict, thought it was fine if not the slightest tad salty (but that could have been the ham wrapped around the pork).Desserts came! My chocolate fondant with black sheep ice cream was beautiful - cakey outside and rich inside without being cloyingly sweet. My companion described her carrot cake concoction as 'devine'. We skipped coffee and our waiter called us a cab.On settling up we spoke to the waiter about how we'd enjoyed our meal enormously although little things like the wine [not] being opened and waitresses dressing properly being addressed could really make The Piano Restaurant a go-to destination for food lovers. He sincerely listened and said he would pass on our compliments and [somewhat pedantic] criticisms to the chef who was not in that night. This comforted me further knowing the chef's sous chef could admirably cope in the boss' absence - the worst excuse for substandards is, "it's chef's night off".The food at The Piano restaurant really is excellent and with a few tweaks and attention to detail I genuinely feel higher accolades are in the offing.Thank you for an unexpectedly fantastic evening.

After many hours on trip advisor trying to find a nice restaurant for our 10th wedding anniversary on our visit to York, we chose the piano restaurant, and we are very pleased we did. They have a 3 course menu for a very reasonable £29.95 a person. The menu is British food at its best in our opinion. There is a not a huge menu, which is usually a good indication that the food will be good, but still a large enough choice for us to have a dilema as to which to pick.Once ordered we didnt have to wait long before we were given a complimentary course of beef carpaccio, olives, delicious bread and oil for us to nibble on while we waited for our starters. A very nice touch. Thank you.The starters arrived. They looked beautiful and they did not disappoint. They tasted delicious.I opted to pay an extra £2 for my main course of rump steak, which came with a delicious suet pudding filled with shin of beef. It was the highlight of my weekend away.Dessert was every bit as wonderful. All in all, one of the best meals we have had in a very long time, and being chefs ourselves, we are not easily pleased!! We booked for Christmas dinner at this hotel at a cost of £70 each and this was our 3rd Christmas Day lunch there. The hotel restaurant and bar areas themselves are very nice and stylish, if not a little cramped. This was the first year that we were disappointed. The meal itself wasn't up to the previous standard and at £70 was a let down. The vegetables were very limited, with only roast potatoes on offer ie no new potatoes and the roast potatoes felt and tasted like warm ups from the previous day. The vegetable dishwasher largely made up of huge sprouts that we're simply indelible as they were basically uncooked and many people were complaining amongst themselves about this, indeed one couple walked out mid meal.I would comment however that the staff who were working on Xmas day were all attentive, well mannered and gave a great service.Unfortunately we will not be returning for future Xmas day lunches at Churchills as at £70 each we expect it to be perfect and it simply wasn't this year.

Our visit did not start well as our friends had booked for the Christmas menu, an old tradition going back many years. When we arrived we were given the standard sunday lunch menu which, when we questioned why, was impossible to change, as they had no record of the booking, and there was no turkey! - in spite of 3 large parties all enjoying Christmas fare. No matter, not the end of the world, but a more sincere explanation would have been appreciated. The meal we were served, assorted starters and 4 choices for the roast beef was merely ok - nothing special but expensive compared to other comparable restaurants serving this unchallenging level of food. Had it been upto the mark we would have been delighted but it wasn't. The wierd gravy is noteworthy in its eccentricity - all the ingredients seemed to have been there but it tasted unusual [and not in a good way] and who needs onions anyway. Suffice to say we will continue our search for excellence in York but I'm sorry to say - Churchills, you need to up your game and keep proper records of bookings.

Just to confirm we didn't stay at the hotel. I think personally £129 pounds per night and not including breakfast is too dear! We stayed elsewhere which was cheaper and rated 4stars!Anyway I can't add enough stars to show just how much we enjoyed the food here, it is £29.99 per head for 2 courses and it was pre-paid for us as a gift but we'd have paid the bill in full if it hadn't have been. There's an extensive wine list also, so something to suit all tastes and food accordingly. We loved all our courses I paid the supplement of £2.95 for my beef and it was well worth it, beautifully cooked along with the vension which my hubby had. The atmosphere is lovely too with a pianist playing in one corner.I too like another reviewer think that it's a tad on the small side so I expect Friday's and Saturday's could be very busy indeed. The Bar is small too so it could be difficult to sit down and enjoy a drink if all the hotel residents try to fit in at the same time.Advice would be to book a table in advance.

Didn't stay at this hotel but did eat dinner there one night. The staff are very friendly although the bar area is quite small for both residents and those like my friend and I who were just dining. The restaurant is lovely and there was a pianist playing when we visited. I just had to leave a review though to say how superb the food was. There is an early bird menu up to 7pm which is very good value for money. The portions are somewhat nouvelle cuisine in size but this is more than made up for by the quality of the cooking. Would recommend it to anyone.

This meal experience was fantastic from the first moment to the last. The food was some of the best my husband and I have eaten. The trout dish and chicken and leek terrine were both fantastic followed by the partridge and the beef. Then the cheese board and the crumble. All local ingredients cooked/ prepared to perfection. The service was also of a good standard, discreet but attentive and not over bearing. You were also not hurried from your seat. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed a perfect way to celebrate a special wedding anniversary. thank you to all the staff at the piano bar we will be back and will not hesitate to recommend you to family and friends.

We were staying at the Churchill hotel for the weekend and chose to eat in for our first night. The small size of the restaurant, the decor, the lighting and the fact that it wasn't jam packed with people all contributed to a nice, relaxed, romantic atmosphere. The piano tinkling away in the background filled the silence yet wasn't loud enough to be annoying, although we did notice it loop round at the end of the evening :-)The food was awesome. We started with some good bread and accompaniments, and the amuse bouche was a nice touch. Our three courses were all very well presented and the portions were perfectly judged. And of course everything was delicious. The desserts deserve a special mention: in particular the banana sorbet and the white chocolate set cream. Our waiter for the evening was very good, giving us the right level of attention throughout the evening. More importantly he was very accommodating, carefully and diligently taking into account our special dietary requirements and setting me up with two desserts (the aforementioned sorbet and set cream - I just couldn't choose one). Our final bill at the end wasn't cheap but we were happy to pay every penny and a big tip on top. A really great experience for anyone staying in York who likes good food.

We stayed in a hotel down the road but ate in the restaurant at the Churchill. Such a romantic setting with piano music and candle lit tables, perfect for a couples night out. This was some of the best food i've ever eaten and the service was wonderful. I would higly reccommend to anyone looking for a romantic meal for 2.

very nice food, very nice presentation, good quality. Piano music played from a tape was not to our taste. Service was friendly, but could have been better. I ordered a bottle of wine, and after finishing it ordered a different bottle. They asked if i wanted fresh glasses.... Wine glasses were very cheap and not appropriate for good wines. I can recommend the Nuit St Georges and the Cote Rotie, they were good value for money. I would still go back, and recommend the restaurant, really only very small niggles

We went here for a romantic night out, and it was lovely. The food was gorgeous! I had the partridge while my partner had the lamb. Both were beautifully cooked. The service was faultless, nice staff and attentive. It was great value for us as we had the gourmet card which gave us 2-for-1. But to be honest, it was that nice I would happily pay full amount! Our best night out in York!

We chose The Piano Restaurant for dinner on our last evening in York - luckily it was very close to our hotel so the rain wasn't too much of a problem. The restaurant is part of the Churchill Hotel just outside the city walls. We were greeted as we walked into the hotel and offered drinks before being shown to our table. Our table was by the window overlooking the hotel gardens. After ordering, we were offered a dish with compliments of the chef and a basket of bread with olives and dips. The complimentary dish was delicious - some sort of pate and the bread was still warm. The rest of the food was lovely - very well presented and cooked. They sold Peroni on draft - such a surprise! The Piano is definitely my second favourite restaurant in York and was made even better because I could use my Gourmet Society discount card. I would have happily paid full price!

We were in York for a 70th birthday and booked this restaurant for the actual night. It was more formal than the other places we dined in and much quieter. It was also more expensive and we found our choice of wine a little disappointing - could just be us. The ambience was relaxed and the service unobtrusive. Good for a special occasion if price is not too important

A gift of a three course meal and a glass of wine for the two of us was an absolute gem here.. the three courses became five. It was Wonderful!! We would definitely eat here again. The only damper to our experience was the lack of welcome or should we say the amount of effort we had to use to gain the attention of the bar/door staff to let them know we had arrived.

We are Fussy!!!!We eat in the best restaurants in London so we know what we are talking about!!!This restaurant is excellent. The choice was very good and the food surpassed all our expectations. The service was equally impressive by people who made us feel that they genuinely wanted us to enjoy our meal. There were 4 of us and we had the 3 course a la carte menu. One of us is a pescatarian. An alternative amuse bouche was quickly served when the staff realised that she couldn`t eat meat. The lamb was delicious and the other meals we ordered were equally nice. Everything was presented beautifully and the portions were just right.10/10. I would return next time we visit York.Do not believe SB006..it is excellent!

We went for Sunday Lunch here, and it has to be the best value in York! £14.95 for three delicous courses. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted warmly and shown into the bar for pre lunch drinks. The whole Hotel is immaculate and staff are so attentive. For Sunday Lunch you can choose from several dishes for each course. My smoked salmon starter was delicious as was my partners warm salad of poached egg and black pudding.Mains were terrific, lovely tender chicken and pork, with excellant mixed vegetables. The only complaint I would have is that the roast potatoes weren't crispy enough!Puddings were also good, and the Hotel is so well run and the ambience so nice it was hard to leave, I only wish I didn't live in York, then I could come and stay here!

Me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the food we were served and the service was good. Olives and bread with oils was a nice surprise whilst waiting for starters. The food was really nicely presented and everything we ate was delicious. The only real downfall was the lack of atmosphere. The words 'piano bar' created a vision in my mind of a buzzing restaurant with lots of music. In reality there was only one other table in and the piano player was nowhere to be seen! We visited on a Saturday night and ate at around 8pm so just when you would expect it to be at it's busiest.

Arriving for dinner, we were dismayed to discover that the only apparent entrance involved six steps up to the front door - not easy for someone on crutches following an operation. Nevertheless having negotiated these, we awaited our fellow diners in the bar adjacent to the restaurant. A number of discordant notes struck us immediately, not least of which the pointlessness of having an electric piano playing lift music, but without a pianist. The front of house/bar hospitality transplant was clearly a great success and the eastern european woman empolyed in that role seemed quite pleased to inform us that there was no other means of egress and that my wife would have to risk further injury when leaving. Fortunately things improved immeasurably at table. Service was exemplary from the young Brit with the unusual hair-do, and the whole meal demonstrated that some excellent cooking was going on there. Between our party we enjoyed pigeon breast served pink, lightly-smoked trout with delicious crab wrapped in lettuce, excellent tender duck, perfectly cooked sea bass, hake and shoulder of lamb. To conclude we sampled the full range of a dozen excellent Yorkshire cheeses. Throughout the meal, the informed waiter dealt with our party with good humour and outstanding courtesy. For a hotel, this was a very good dining experience, marred only by the less than helpful reception/bar person and of course the ridiculous electric piano.

This restaurant was in the sister hotel to ours and we decided to try it on the Saturday evening. Initially we were a bit put off by the fixed £27.95 three course menu but were quickly reassured we could have only one course if we wanted. Little touches made all the difference.. the chef sent out sample plates and the finest warm breads I had tasted. The wood pigeon starter and the rainbow trout were an absolute delight. The main course selection was good, pork fillet, pork cheek dish was lovely, with portion sizes very manageable. A good wine list and a lovely atmosphere. We were a group of four girls but this would suit couples too.

Dined here on a Saturday night, and we were disappointed to find there was no live piano as we ate and as the restaurant was quiet it lacked atmosphere slightly. The complementary amuse bouche was a nice touch, but we were perplexed by the starters and mains. The portions were small and arranged somewhat ridiculously on the plate, with one starter having a literal smear of sauce over one corner of the plate - it served no purpose as there was not enough to eat and to be honest it didn't look very pleasant. All of this would have been no problem had the food tasted amazing, but it was distinctly average. I chose the venison and, while the meat itself was the lovely, the accompanying vegetables were very undercooked (the sprouts were so hard they were barely edible). I chose the apple tarte tatin for dessert as I was intrigued by the Wensleydale ice cream, but it tasted just like vanilla. It felt like this restaurant has taken good British food and tried to add a Heston Blumenthal twist (see the triple cooked chips), but unfortunately haven't quite succeeded in making it spectacular. Not all negatives though - the restaurant itself is beautiful, the staff were excellent and there was a good wine list.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

It’s a campus canteen so don’t come with expectations that don’t remember that point. That said, food is cooked and presented well beyond any canteen food I’ve ever experienced and the salad bar is by far the freshest, tastiest array of salad you’ll ever be served. Friendly staff too. Enjoy!
